Reflection on today’s Gospel: Mark 1: 40-45
There is a very puzzling detail in today’s Gospel. After
Jesus heals the leper he tells him, “See that you tell
no one anything …” Why does Jesus say this? It will be
impossible for the main to keep his healing a secret,
and you would think that Jesus would want everyone
to know, since Jesus’ healings give authority to his
teaching. Perhaps Jesus is not admonishing the man to
keep his healing a secret forever. Rather, maybe he is
instructing the healed man to first show himself to
the priest so he can be declared clean and re-enter
society.
Leprosy is contagious. As we read in this Sunday’s
selection from Leviticus, lepers had to warn others
when they were approaching by calling out, “Unclean,
unclean!” Notice that the leper did not call out
“unclean, unclean” when approaching Jesus. Jesus
might well have been angry with this man for
endangering Jesus’ health. But evidently, Jesus is not
thinking of himself. Mark tells us that Jesus is so
“moved with pity,” that Jesus “stretched out his hand,
touched him,” and healed him. Jesus touched him! One
cannot but wonder how long it had been since this
person had felt human touch.
Still, we are left with the questions. Why did Jesus
instruct the man to tell no one? Mark gives us an
answer in today’s Gospel selection. By telling everyone
about his healing, the man caused Jesus the same
problem that we saw Jesus confronting in last week’s
Gospel. News of Jesus’ acts or power caused the
crowds to pursue Jesus, not to hear the Gospel, but to
experience miraculous healings. Because the man
disobeyed Jesus’ instruction, “it was impossible for
Jesus to enter a town openly”. Once more we see that
for Jesus, healings were not an end in themselves.
They were one expression of God’s love, which Jesus
came to reveal.

How might Jesus’ words when he healed the leper
have meaning for us?
If you were to seek Jesus out, for what would you
ask?
In what way do we show ourselves to the priest in
order to be declared clean?

Parish Commissioning Mass: At 6pm Mass this
weekend, we celebrate the many ways we all
contribute to the spirit and well being of our Parish
Community. Thank you to everyone who volunteers
and supports the many facets of parish life. We
also sincerely thank all those who quietly and
regularly attend our masses and support our
community through their prayerful reflection.
WELCOME to all who celebrate the Eucharist
with us today, to the church communities across
our parish and a special welcome to any who may
be visiting our parish.
Today we stand in footsteps millennia old. May we
acknowledge the Elders, families and forebears of
the Boonwurrung and Wurundjeri tribes of the
Kulin Nations, who are the traditional custodians of
our parish land, whose cultures and customs have
nurtured, and continue to nurture, this land since
men and women awoke from the great dream. We
honour the presence of these ancestors who reside
in the imagination of this land and whose
irrepressible spirituality flow through all creation.
Our Parish supports the endeavours of the
Royal Commission to bring healing to
and justice for the victims of abuse.

The latest free edition of Australian Catholics is
available at the back of church. In the lead up to
ANZAC DAY it focuses on ‘War and Peace’ and includes
a feature story ‘Men of God in their midst. Father
Morgan Batt is a chaplain, commonly known as a padre,
with the Australian Defence Force. His ministry has
taken him into global hotspots such as East Timor and
Iraq, where his role involves being with the men and
women soldiers wherever they are - whether it's in
camp or on patrol in hostile environments.
Dear friends/parishioners/school parents,
One of the most successful programs our parish offers
is ‘Godstart’. This is a post-Baptism program where
every baby and child christened in our community
receives on their birthday (up to the age of 5), a special
card which acknowledges their birthday, their baptism
and their growing faith. These cards are sent by mail to
those living outside our area, and delivered by hand to
those within our boundaries.
We have a fantastic Godstart team (a huge thank you
to them all!) - Sonya who maintains the data base and
prepares all the cards, and Boris and Lynda, Nuala and
myself who deliver the cards. Nuala has been helping us
out for the last few years, but due to work
commitments cannot continue. We are looking for a
couple more helpers in the delivering of these cards at this stage its usually just 2 or 3 per month. Godstart
helpers usually deliver the card on or near the child’s
birthday and if the family is not at home, they just
leave the card in the letterbox.
Is this something you would like to help with? It’s an
easy task, but means so much to those who receive the
cards - the parents know that their child is being
thought of and remembered each year. It would suit
people who walk regularly - you can deliver the card as
you go!
Please let me know if you think you can assist.
Thanks and every blessing
Maria George
