Christian florist tells State: ‘I won’t sell my freedom’
A Christian florist who refused to provide flowers for a gay
wedding in the US has declined a settlement offer that would
have saved her home and business.
The day after a judge ruled that Baronelle Stutzman had broken
state laws, Washington State’s Attorney General Bob Ferguson
offered to drop his lawsuit if she paid a fine and agreed to make
flower arrangements for same-sex ceremonies.
But Stutzman rejected the offer, explaining in a letter to
Ferguson that it’s about “freedom not money”.

We invite you come and hear
Come and hear God’s Word made clear
That you and I are born in sin
Heaven, we cannot enter in
But Jesus Christ God’s only Son
Has made a way for everyone
If we will only turn from sin
And ask the Lord to dwell within
‘Members One of Another’
Paul uses this lovely phrase in his epistle to the Ephesians,
chapter 4, as he encourages the early Christians to see themselves as belonging to each other, in Christ. When we give our
lives to Him, then we are in Him, one with Him – part of Him.
The Lord Himself speaks to His Father God (as the Son of
Man) in John 17, giving emphasis to this unique relationship:
‘All mine are thine, and thine are mine (v.10) ...that they also
may be one in us...that they may be one, even as we are one’
(v’s 21-22). So, as members of the body of Christ, one with
Him, it is imperative that that relationship is seen to be effective in the outworking of it before the world amongst whom we
bear witness to His transforming grace in our lives. If it is
absent, and the love of Christ and our oneness in Him is not
evident, then how can we effectively live for Him, or hope to
convince a sceptical world? As Paul also gives emphasis to this
oneness of the believers in Christ, he is at pains to point out the
necessary completeness that the members bring to our witness
and service for the Lord - recognising the several, and unique,
abilities that each believer possesses. So, if any separate themselves from the united functioning of the whole, then the work
is marred -our testimony is incomplete before the world we
would hope to influence for Christ.
We have just had our annual church members meeting. It was
an encouraging time of reviewing the Lord’s work amongst us
over another year. It ought to be a meeting that reflects the
strength of our church, as evidenced by the number of people
identifying with our witness for Christ. Instead, sadly, it is a
meeting of a minority of believers who are prepared to identify
with, and share responsibility for, our strong Bible-believing,
Christ-centred, Baptist church. Why is that?
I’ve been doing a lot of reading on God’s dealings with the
congregation of Israel. It was vital they stood together as one.
God brooked no dissenters, and any who chose a different path
paid a heavy price. Any close observers of our rapidly changing world today would realise we are entering a time of
unprecedented change and challenge. God’s work and witness
will be - nay, is already being - a particular target of the
Enemy, in the various guises in which he presents himself. So,
who will be found faithful, and standing with us when trials
come – if the Lord tarries much longer? Will your name
appear on the roll of members of Limavady Baptist Church?
Doesn’t have to, of course, but it would be such an encouragement if it were, and a better witness to a lost world!
