NCCC STUDENTS SPEAK AT
APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE’S PUBLIC HEARING
NCCC students attended the Appropriations Committee Public Hearing on Tuesday,
February 24 to voice their concerns regarding the Governor Malloy’s dramatic cuts to higher
education. The CSCU System (all the
Community Colleges, all the State
Universities and Charter Oak State
College) was cut by $30 million.
Adjust this cut with the system’s
budget request, the overall cut to our
system is now at $38 million. The
Student Advisory Committee (SAC)
was told by the system office that if
tuition alone had to make up the
difference, it would result in a tuition
increase of 12% to 16% for the
Community Colleges. The increase to
the CSU’s would be 9%. It is likely
that the Board of Regents will
approve a combination of tuition increases and faculty/staff cuts to meet the $38 million
shortfall.
Rhea Drozdenko, Student Senate President and
Senators, Ethan Napolitano and Jenny Martinsen
testified at the Appropriation Committee’s Public
Hearings in Hartford, opposing the budget cuts.
Student Senate meetings are open to all NCCC
students and meet on Tuesdays in GW 110 from
11:45 – 1:00.

has once again formed a Penguin
Plunge team to raise funds for
Special Olympics Connecticut's year-round programs of sports training
and athletic competition for people with intellectual disabilities.

NCCC'S Student Nurses' Association partnered with Be The
Match Marrow Donor Program for our college's Health and
Wellness Fair. The students offered informational material about
the marrow donor program and assisted Cristina Balboni, the
representative from Be The Match, in registration of potential
donors and the collection of a cheek swab. Time will tell if they
registered a potential life saver!

EASIER AND FASTER! (Helpful Hints)
File your federal tax return before you file your FAFSA. This will
allow you to have access to the actual income tax data you will
need. (You will not have to guess reporting the information).
Allow 3 weeks to go by after you file your federal tax return before
you attempt to file your FAFSA. (You have to allow time for the IRS
to process and put your tax return into their database).
After 3 weeks, file your 2015-2016 FAFSA on the Web. (Remember
that you will need a Federal PIN, and if you are a dependent student,
one of your parents will also need a Federal PIN number.

Mad River Literary Festival
The 19th annual Mad River Literary Festival will be held
April 14th and 15th in the FH Auditorium (6:30 pm).
On Tuesday, April 14th, there will be a reading by students,
staff and community members followed by a presentation
and reading by novelist Karen Shepard (The Celestials, a Book
Circle pick). The presentation will include a slide presentation
and a talk about the origin of the novel.
Wednesday, April 15th will be given over to two dynamic
poets, Kate Rushin and Doug Anderson.

Free Career Training for SNAP
recipients at Northwestern CT
Community College
Persons receiving SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program) assistance may now be eligible to take one of
NCCC’s 6 in-demand workforce training programs for free.
These programs include Certified Nurse Aide, CT Security
Officer, Emergency Medical Technician, Pharmacy
Technician, Microsoft Office Suite with Bookkeeping
QuickBooks Certificate, and Introduction to Manufacturing
Certificate.
NCCC’s Center for Workforce Development has recently been
accepted as the latest partner in the SNAP E&T Program, a
federally-funded initiative that provides scholarships for SNAP
recipients to receive the training needed to obtain jobs, with
high growth prospects. These scholarships are administered at
the State level via the Department of Social Services.
Note: SNAP recipients receiving TANF (Temporary Aid to
Needy Families) funds are not eligible for the NCCC
scholarship.

MassMutual Scholars Program Scholarships Are you a high
achiever? Have you entered your sophomore year at NCCC? Do you
have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA? Are you interested in pursuing
a career in the insurance or financial services industry?
If you can answer “yes” to all of the above, then you may qualify for
a $5,000 scholarship from the MassMutual Scholars Program.
The Scholarship application deadline is March 27, 2015, but it is
a good idea to request your letter(s) of recommendation NOW
and submit your application as soon as possible.

Applications for the following scholarships are available in the

Twelve $1,000 Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Auxiliary Scholarships
are available students who plan to enter a health-related field. The
application is available now in the Financial Aid Office. Be certain to
follow the specific instructions for this scholarship including the
necessity of providing two letters of recommendation, and carefully
typing the application. The deadline is March 11, 2015 to have
completed and returned the application form with official academic
transcript and letters of recommendation.
Finch College Alumni Association Foundation Trust Scholarships are
available for Community College students transferring to a four-year
college. Information and forms are available in the Financial Aid
Office Greenwoods Hall Room 224 and at www.FinchCollege.org .

Scholarships are awarded annually by Northwestern Connecticut Community College (NCCC) to currently enrolled students who will be
continuing at NCCC in the fall 2015 semester and currently enrolled students who will be graduating from NCCC in May 2015 and
transferring to a four-year college or university in the fall 2015 semester.
To be eligible to apply for NCCC and NCCF Scholarships, applicants:
**must be a matriculated student at NCCC (enrolled in an associate degree program)
**must have completed at least six (6) credits in college-level courses (100-level or above)

Tips for Winning Scholarships
1.
Start searching for scholarships as soon as possible as many
scholarships have very early deadlines. Understand that
scholarship sources are numerous and require time to
investigate. A scholarship will not fall into your lap. You
have to make it happen.
2.
Get organized; develop an action plan with a time schedule.
3.
Use a free scholarship matching service that has a reputation
for maintaining an updated database like FASTWEB.COM.
Avoid scholarship organizations that charge any fee or
guarantee a minimum number of scholarships.
4.
When conducting your search, allocate sufficient time to build
an expansive personal profile to maximize the potential for
matching your characteristics and interests with a database.
5.
Look for local scholarships advertised on bulletin boards near
the financial aid office or listed in the local newspapers. Look
at the College’s scholarship webpages for any named
scholarships which are targeted to your academic goals or
program of study.

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) for HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS and
RENEWALS
This American Heart Association course teaches CPR, use of an
automated external defibrillator (AED), barrier devices, bag-valve
masks and foreign-body airway obstruction relief. This 5-hour
course is intended for the health care professional. Cost includes
text and AHA certification fee.

COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM
CERT is a training program that prepares you to help yourself, your
family, and your neighbors in the event of a disaster. During an
incident, emergency personnel may not be able to reach everyone
right away. By getting trained in CERT, you will have the skills to
help emergency responders save lives and protect property.
