Feeling Lucky?

December already!!!! I can’t believe how fast the year has gone. It has been full on here for months
and is only getting more so as every man and his dog wants everything done before xmas. It seems
with the election over, kiwis are more settled, positive and keen to forge ahead and it is showing in our
orders. Hope this new positive outlook and increase in demand is happening at your place of work as
well. It’s always good to go away for Xmas knowing you have plenty of work on your return.
We have been busy at a whole range of shows, breakfasts and so of with Makita lately, but one that
really stands out is Big Boys toys where we sponsored the Makita Motorhood Hall in conjunction with
the publishers of NZ V8, Performance Car and Classic Car. This was huge fun. We were in a hall with
30plus superb classic and special cars including a 100% exact replica DeLorian.
The hall was packed throughout the weekend and it was hard to move
around at times, but our Makita product stand was very well patronised.
Of course, the fun was enhanced by our location next to the Action Arena,
where all kinds of incredible feats of driving, motorcycling, BMX, stunt work
and more were demonstrated.
Back to work…….and one of the leaders in our top sellers line-up is our
new brushless range of tools. This technology really does deliver major
benefits – more power, more work amount per charge, longer run times and
longer life of the tool and the battery, so it’s not surprising the market is
embracing this range.
So far it includes our brushless hammer drill, impact drill, impact driver, jigsaws, grinders and the
latest arrival a new 165mm circular saw. You’ll find plenty on this inside but I think it is worth pointing
out the new brushless grinder DGA504Z which we believe could replace basic AC small grinders
without the compliance hassles.
This issue also looks at a number of other new tools all with great benefits within their categories.
There’s a new promotion where you can win a battery and lunch box, and we have the two lucky
winners of our big Splash promotion.
Here’s hoping your silly season isn’t too silly and you have a great Christmas break and a bit of time to
relax with the family. Merry Christmas.
THEY’LL BE MAKING
A BIG SPLASH
Early November two lucky winners for our
big Splash promotion, which ended 31st
October, were pulled out of the hat, both
of whom will be having a great time this
summer.
Dave Jennings from Palmerston North and
Hira Edmonds from Auckland each receive
a package of family fun in the sun products
including a 3.1 metre inflatable with outboard, an
adult tandem and two children’s kayaks, oars and
vests, a trailer with H frame to put these all on, 2 body
boards and 4 snorkel, mask and flippers sets. Worth over
$10k!!!!
Dave purchased a 2 piece 18V brushless cordless combo kit from
Hometown ITM and Hira a planer and 185mm circular saw from
Carters in Panmure.
THEY WENT TO
THE BIG GAME
Our May-July promotion – GO to the big Game attracted a large
number of entries. With the prize being two chances for two plus
mates to go to Tonga on a big game fishing trip, it’s not surprising.
Clearly fishing remains one of the big drawcards for your customers.
The two winners - Ken Rudolph, who purchased tools from Enco Industrial,
Auckland with wife Cushla and Julian Throp who bought from
Toolshed, Dunedin, with wife Helen, flew to Tonga in September
– bang in the peak fishing and whale watching seasons. They
all enjoyed the hospitality of the Tonga Beach Resort and
some seriously big mahi mahi, marlin and other fish as you
can see from the photos. Rumour has it the girls were the
best fishers!!

MAKITA BRUSHLESS
MAKES A BIG IMPACT
MAKITA HAS BEEN DEVELOPING BRUSHLESS MOTORS FOR ALMOST TEN YEARS,
USING PRECISION ENGINEERING AND MOTOR REFINEMENT TO INCREASE BOTH THE
POWER AND PERFORMANCE OF THEIR 18V LITHIUM-ION TOOLS.
THIS TOGETHER WITH MAKITA’S NEW LOW IMPEDANCE 5.0AH BATTERY HERALDS A WHOLE
NEW ERA IN TOOL DESIGN AND SPECIFICATION, WITH HUGE PERFORMANCE BENEFITS.
Removing the brushes removes friction, so the energy
produced by the motor can operate at lower amperage.
This lowers the overall heat production of the motor
making it much more efficient and increasing the work
output for every single battery charge.
This is particularly beneficial in high drain tools such as
grinders, where the reduction in friction makes each battery
charge last a great deal longer.
The temperature at the housing surface is also reduced so
DHP481
CORDLESS
HAMMER
DRIVER DRILL
these tools can operate continuously for long periods of time.
Another big plus - a brushless motor extends the battery and
tool life of any tool-saving dollars and time, and is pretty
much maintenance-free, saving on downtime.
Todd Okochi, Managing Director, comments, “The beauty of
these new brushless tools is the incredible performance this
technology opens up. Every tool in the range is packed with
features, which are further enhanced by the application of
our 4.0Ah and new 5.0AH low impedance batteries. We see
brushless as the way forward for 18V, and will continue to
add to the range.”
Makita’s 2014 brushless range kicked off earlier in the year
with the arrival of its CORDLESS HAMMER DRIVER DRILL
(DHP481) and DRIVER DRILL (DDF481), both with top of the
class 115Nm of torque. Now the range has been expanded
Brad Gearry
with the arrival of a number of new of powerhouses of
performance, each with great features to enhance their value
on the jobsite.
DDF481
CORDLESS
DRIVER DRILL
175N.M OF DRIVING TORQUE
The DTD148 IMPACT DRIVER is a tough little guy –175Nm of torque in a 119mm
body, 10mm more compact than its predecessor and just 1.5kg, even with the
5.0Ah battery. The brushless motor is 35% faster, with extremely efficient energy
production for much greater work per battery charge.
FAULTY TIGHTENING A THING OF THE PAST
With this kind of torque, you might expect the potential of faulty tightening to
increase. But this impact driver features an exciting ‘T’ fastening mode that
optimises the fastening of self-tapping screws, eliminating damage to the screw
thread and the work surface.
DTD148
IMPACT
DRIVER
The tool starts in ‘hard’ mode, driving at a fast 3,500rpm. Once the tool starts
to impact, the built-in electronic controller automatically reduces the rotational
speed to 2,100rpm and the impact speed to 2,600ipm.
The simple push-button three-stage impact power selection - T-mode plus Hard,
Medium and Soft, let’s you choose the impact power for the work material or
screw type.
Supporting features such as the three-stage battery fuel gauge, the LED pre- and
after-glow job lights and the phosphorescent bumper all improve performance
and operator comfort. XPT – eXtreme Protection Technology protects the
battery from dust and dripping water even in harsh outdoor applications.
The comfortable, ergonomic, soft grip handle delivers great operating control
whilst reducing hand fatigue.
The DTD148 is available as a 3.0Ah RFE kit or Skin. It also accepts Makita’s
4.0Ah or new, low impedance 5.0Ah battery that recharges in just 45
minutes in the current rapid charger.
NEW JIGSAWS - MAGIC PIECES OF KIT
Makita’s two new brushless jigsaws, DJV181 and DJV182 demonstrate how
brushless technology can deliver unbelievable performance. Higher operating
efficiencies than their comparable corded models, with increased maximum
power output, increased work amount per battery charge and smooth, superbly
accurate cutting.
DJV181
JIGSAW
*shown with vacuum attachment - not included
All this comes in very compact lightweight body designs that are very
manoeuvrable. The barrel type jigsaw is 298mm and just 2.5 kg (with 4.0Ah
batteries), the top handle 266mm and 2.6kg.
What makes them truly ‘magic pieces of kit’ is their new soft start function. Users
report they are ‘bloody nice’ to use, with very accurate landing of the blade on
to the work surface. The soft, no load speed function lets you set the desired
operating revs, yet the jigsaw automatically reduces the blade stroke to a noload speed before you start to cut into the job, allowing you to find and attack
the cutting line very accurately. Once started, it then automatically increases
to your preset speed.
Other features include a safety-focused electronic push button switch on
the barrel handle model, which provides two stage starting or a lock-on
trigger on the top handle model which stops the machine if you don’t pull the
trigger within 10 seconds.
Both jigsaws are available as 'Skins'.

WRENCH
WRENCH shows how each of these tools not only offers the
benefits of brushless. Makita has added other superb features,
such as in this case, three stage electronic power selection
which overcomes faulty tightening.
Simply select with the push of a button hard, medium or soft
to match the work surface or screw type, and the wrench
will operate in the optimal way to prevent over-tightening or
stripping of the thread. This is a real bonus when you have tools
with the kind of increased torque brushless can deliver, in this
case, 280N.m tightening torque in a tool that is just 147mm long
and weighs only 1.7kg (3.0AH battery).
This tool is available as a skin or 3.0Ah or 4.0Ah kits with two
batteries and fast charger.
JUST THE BEGINNING
DHS680
BRUSHLESS 165MM
CIRCULAR SAW
These are just the start of a line-up of superior brushless models
which Makita will be releasing progressively over the next 6
months.
They will be followed shortly by a BRUSHLESS 165MM CIRCULAR
SAW (DHS680) that combines increased power with greater work
amount and increased cutting speeds, in a durable lightweight
body that weighs just 3.3kg and is just 160mm wide. It also
features Makita’s superb new automatic torque drive which
DGA504

changes the cutting speed according to the load condition.
Also coming up are two awesome 125mm angle grinders with a
SLIDE STYLE LOCK-ON SWITCH (DGA504Z) or PADDLE SWITCH
(DGA505Z). Both tools deliver major increases in grinding power
over their non-brushless counterparts, with battery protection
circuits to prevent over discharging and current overload, soft
start and soft braking. Both benefit from the reduction of friction
that brushless technology delivers, making each battery charge
last a lot longer.
Both have an anti-restart function and automatic torque drive
which changes the cutting speed according to the load conditions

and specific application.
Both grinders will be available as skins only or 4.0Ah kits with
two batteries and a fast charger.
NEW PRODUCTS
GREATER RUN TIME FROM NEW 5.0AH
BATTERIES
NEW
Makita’s commitment to constant innovation has produced its exciting new
5.0Ah low impedance battery, offering major benefits to the operator. It is
ideal for any applications where uninterrupted run time is critical, such as
in remote construction sites, where operators are undertaking high-load
functions or are a long way from charging points.
The 5.0Ah battery gives considerably more run time per charge (over 3.0Ah),
so reduces down time and avoids the need to carry extra batteries around.
It recharges in just 45 minutes using Makita’s fast charger, comparing well
with the 3.0Ah 22 minutes fast charge or the 36 minutes of 4.0Ah.
The increased capacity of the battery also protects against overheating and over-discharging in heavy demand situations. This significantly
extends the working life of the battery,
One other great feature - the new 5.0Ah battery is the same size and weight as the18V 3.0Ah so it maintains the balance and comfort
built into every Makita 18V cordless tool. The battery is compatible with all Makita 18V Lithium-ion MakStar tools or those with a yellow
connector plate.
18V PLUS 18V – CUTTING THE CORD NOT THE POWER!
Earlier in the year we released our first 18V + 18V tool, with great success. This technology enables the user to harness the power of two
18 Volt batteries, for 36V of grunt, with the manoeuvrability and portability of cordless. More importantly, these new tools operate on
the existing 18 Volt Lithium-ion platform so you can utilise existing 18V batteries without any kind of special adaptors to get the power of
corded without the very expensive 36 volt battery price tag.
NEW CIRCULAR SAW COMPARES
BEAUTIFULLY
NEW
The range kicked off with a 184MM (7 1/2”) CIRCULAR SAW – the DHS710,
which amply demonstrates just what this new technology is able to achieve.
Test comparisons with Makita’s 185 mm corded saw show this tool delivers
the same power. The work amount achieved on a single battery charge is
also more than doubled. If the Makita 18V predecessor model work amount
is indexed to 100, the new DHS710 delivered a work amount of 205 cuts.
A maximum cutting depth of 65.5mm at 90o comes in a body that weighs
slightly less than its corded counterpart - 4.7kg compared to 4.8kg.
The well-balanced design has a non-slip elastomer grip for greater comfort
and control. A blower function blows the sawdust off the cut-line for a clear
view of your cutting. The rear dust exhaust can be fitted with an optional
dust nozzle and Makita vacuum.

NEW
HAMMERING THE POWER HOME
The 2 x 18V platform is ideal for tools requiring more grunt. Those tools
that previously were regarded more the domain of corded power can now be
achieved within a cordless environment, for cost, time and work efficiency.
A great example is the 18V + 18V DHR264 26MM CORDLESS COMBINATION
ROTARY HAMMER.
DHR264
ROTARY HAMMER
This comes in a compact tool with a new design, vibration-absorbing
handle which allows maximum power thrust whilst protecting the user from
fatigue. It’s packed with other features too like the one touch slide chuck
which makes bit changing simple and the 40 different bit-angle settings for chiselling. The bit holder is adapted to utilise SDS-Plus drill
bits and chisels. Adding to the versatility is the easily swappable keyless chuck for timber drilling.
Like many of Makita’s drills, the DHR264 also incorporates XPT, Makita’s eXtreme Protection Technology, which protects the tool’s
mechanics from dust and water in outdoor applications and harsh environments.
Other great applications for the 18V + 18V platform are OPE equipment such as the DUC252RF2/DUC252Z 10” chainsaw, a very handy
round the garden saw with increased cutting speed and new tool-less adjuster system for easy dial adjustment of the chain tension, as
well as the DLM380Z 18V+18V cordless lawnmower and DUH651Z Hedge Trimmer.
NEW
ONE BIG SUCKER
Makita’s new 18V CORDLESS CYCLONE CLEANER – DCL500 – delivers
powerful suction and more efficient dust collection. The newly developed
filtration system uses centrifugal force to separate large and fine dust
particles, collecting the large particles in the dust cup so only the fine
particles need to be captured by the filter. This reduces filter clogging
and allows the HEPA filter to work much more efficiently for high filtration
capacity and clean exhaust air. An orange indicator light warns when filter
cleaning is due and both the filter and the dust cup are washable in water.
DCL500
CYCLONE CLEANER
This cleaner comes with a zoom pipe which can be extended to suit the user’s height, a crevice nozzle and shoulder belt. It is available
as a skin – DCL500Z.
OLD NEWS THAT’S GOOD
NEW
Makita’s two new METAL SHEARS, the JS1602 1.6mm* and
the JS3201 3.2mm* are both facelifts models with several
great pluses. Both the motors and the body designs have been
upgraded for ease of use, greater operator comfort and control.
Both deliver high efficiencies - 380W and 710W continuous
rating input respectively, and cutting capacities.
Yet both shears utilise the same blading as their predecessors
so there is no need to buy new blading to benefit from the
upgraded model features.
