ABOUT THE EVENT
LeadingAge Massachusetts and Ziegler are pleased to announce the Seventh Annual
Senior Living Symposium to be held on Thursday, March 12 at the Crowne Plaza in
Natick, Massachusetts. The 2015 Senior Living Symposium remains a one-day event
designed to provide attendees with an update on current trends in senior living, ranging
from finance to operations to legal considerations and other relevant topics. The Senior
Living Symposium also provides attendees ample opportunity to mingle with
colleagues and industry professionals. The topics are intended for CEOs, CFOs, board
members and other key personnel.
ABOUT THE LOCATION
Completely renovated, the Crowne Plaza Boston-Natick is situated 25 minutes from
downtown Boston and Logan Airport in the corporate and retail hub of MetroWest
Boston in Natick.

Description: This opening session will set the stage for the workshop’s agenda, providing an overview of key trends
in the senior living sector within a framework of the national economy and capital markets.

Objective 2: To highlight the sector’s recovery post-downturn and the “new normal” backdrop
Objective 3: To understand how national and regional trends are impacting Massachusetts providers and how they

Facing the Challenges of our Aging Population: Strategies for the Next Four Years
Speakers: Majority Leader Harriette Chandler (Massachusetts State Senate), Michael Festa (AARP Massachusetts),
Len Fishman (UMass Gerontology Institute), David Seltz (Health Policy Commission), Kenneth Smith (Office of Long Term
Services and Supports, Executive Office of Elder Affairs and MassHealth, EOHHS)
Moderator: Elissa Sherman (LeadingAge Massachusetts)
Description: With an increasing percentage of our population over age 65 and in need of long term services and
supports, what are the most critical policies that the Commonwealth needs to adopt in the next four years in order
to be prepared to meet the needs of this growing population? This session will include a panel discussion with
representatives from the state legislature, the new Baker Administration and other leaders in the field of aging policy,
discussing their perspectives on the policy priorities that the Commonwealth will need to tackle in the next four
years.
Session Objectives:
Objective 1: To understand the most significant challenges facing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts related to
the aging of our population.
Objective 2: To identify recommended policy priorities of top leaders in aging policy .
Objective 3: To consider the barriers that need to be overcome in order to successfully achieve these priorities.

Senior Living Financing Options
Speakers: Kristen Richardson (Putnam), Timothy Wade (M&T Bank), Chad Himel (Ziegler)
Moderator: Keith Robertson (Ziegler)
Description: This is a popular, recurring session for the symposium each year as it provides important updates for
senior living organizations who are seeking capital or looking to refinance existing debt. What are the current trends
in bank lending as well as the fixed-rate bond market? What advice do lenders have for providers who are seeking
capital? These questions and more will be answered by the finance professionals participating in the session.
Session Objectives:
Objective 1: Discuss recent trends in senior living financing and what providers need to know if seeking capital.
Objective 2: Understand what steps provider organizations need to take to successfully prepare for capital projects
and be a strong candidate for financing.
Objective 3: Hear how lenders perceive the sector and understand their evaluation process for providing funds to
senior living organizations.

Advocacy as a Discipline: Best Practices in Stakeholder Engagement.
Speakers: Former State Representative Steven Walsh (Mass Council of Community Hospitals), Paul Donovan (Kearney, Donovan
and McGee), Naomi Prendergast (D'Youville Life and Wellness Community)
Description: Advocacy is a key foundation to the continued success of the not-for-profit sector. Knowing how to
advocate successfully for those you serve and how to engage stakeholders is significant. This session will provide
several perspectives on the importance of and how to be an effective advocate, and will highlight best practices
among Massachusetts senior living provider organizations
Session Objectives:
Objective 1: To understand why advocacy is a critical role for all nonprofit organizations.
Objective 2: To learn what is most effective in communicating with your elected representatives.
Objective 3: To develop concrete tools to implement a culture of advocacy within your organization.

Description: Many sectors in healthcare and the business economy are experiencing notable trends in joint
ventures, formal partnerships and the consolidation of services. This session will provide attendees with an overview
of the types of partnerships and joint ventures being executed in senior living and where Massachusetts providers
can consider opportunities as they look to grow, diversify and partner with others.
Session Objectives:
Objective 1: To learn about the key trends in the sector regarding joint ventures, partnerships and affiliations.
Objective 2: To hear from a provider who has specifically engaged in a partnerships with an organization to provide
home-based programs and services.
Objective 3: To hear a case study of a single-site organization who elected to affiliate with another not-for-profit
provider to advance its mission.
The End of Advertising. The Advent of Engagement
Speaker: Todd Harff, Erin Read (Creating Results
Description: The old way of advertising was disruption and push marketing. The new way is permission and pull
marketing. It’s the end of advertising and the beginning of engagement. This presentation explores major trends in
marketing and shows how senior living organizations can/must transform their mindsets, methods and who in the
organization is “responsible” for marketing.
Session Objectives:
Objective 1: To understand the major trends in advertising and how they are changing the marketing landscape for
senior living organizations.
Objective 2: To learn how to improve the ROI of marketing efforts by communicating with prospects in a way that
they value.
Objective 3: To discover what engagement is and the benefits enjoyed by organizations that are engaged with their
prospects at every level of the organization.

engage your boards’ time, talent and treasure. Understanding Governance as Leadership© will also lead you to
concentrate on the right questions, challenges and opportunities facing your board

Objective 1: To understand the three modes of governance and how to apply them to your work to raise the level of
conversation with your board.
Objective 2: To learn facilitation methods and agenda practices to increase board engagement.
