Message from the Board
Together we can achieve things.
The energy management industry in BC has a strong foundation built over the last two and a
half decades. There are well established suppliers with energy efficient products, distributors
that have strong relationships and can influence buying decisions, contractors and consultants
that provide guidance and support, and utilities with established programs to encourage
conservation. However, historically, we have not come together effectively to leverage our
expertise and to proactively promote our industry. I am proud to see how BC ACE has been the
catalyst to change in this area.
BC ACE has built on initiatives that began just over a year ago to connect members and to begin
to advocate for our industry. Some key highlights of this year include:

Opportunities for members to provide input on potential policy initiatives (September
2014)

Educational sessions to learn about opportunities in our industry (CIRS March 2014,
Occupancy based controls October 2014)

Meetings and input to the Provincial Government on DSM planning and regulation

Collaboration with industry organizations with similar mandates include the Canadian
Alliance of Certified Energy Advisors and Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance and others

Input to utilities for resource planning

Formation of Home Performance Stakeholder Council

Launch of our website and newsletter
We have a very dedicated “working” board that meets bi-weekly to review action items and
develop new programs and initiatives. They spend a significant amount of time on our
association and I want to recognize and thank each of them for their involvement. Please share
your appreciation with them as well.

Our industry offers the best alternative to address growing energy demands. We are a viable
option that can make a significant impact on energy use and at the same time, provide excellent
job and economic opportunities for our Province. Please reach out to one of our board members

2014 Year in Review
2014 was an exciting year for BC ACE with the association promoting energy conservation and
efficiency efforts in a number of key areas. Heading into 2015, we’d like to take a moment to
update everyone on key highlights from the past including:
Advocacy:

BC Government - Representation to BC Government on ten-year DSM strategic plan,
establishment of quarterly meetings and consultation input on DSM regulation changes.

BC Hydro - Representation to BC Hydro on Integrated Resource Plan and Energy
Conservation & Efficiency Committee.

FortisBC - Representation to FortisBC on Long Term Resource Plans and Energy
Efficiency & Conservation Committee.
Member Promotion and Networking:

Online – Creation of website and quarterly e-newsletter for information dissemination.

Member Input – In March 2014 BC ACE members gathered at the Centre for Interactive
Research on Sustainability (CIRS) building at UBC to learn about the building
performance evaluation submitted as a graduate thesis by Laura Fedoruk, a MSc
research graduate of the UBC Institute of Resources, Environment, and Sustainability
(IRES). The presentation focused on results and conclusions of analysis of energy and
performance data from the building systems of the CIRS building as well as inhabitant
feedback about building monitoring and controls. There was a high level of interest in
continuing the discussion and finding out more about the evident gap between the
building model and actual building performance.
There was a follow-up session in October 2014 with a presentation by Stefan Storey,
Ph.D., co-founder of the UBC based start-up, Sensible Building Science Inc. He
presented a summary of research findings from his work-to-date. Through questions
and contributions from the audience several issues emerged.

Industry and BC ACE Development:

Advocating to Government and Utilities on behalf of the industry

Promoting the importance and contribution of the industry

Development of proposal for improved conservation and efficiency rate designs for BC
Hydro.

Growing membership and Annual General Meeting

Formation of the Home Performance Stakeholder Council.

Reciprocal membership relationships with Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance.

Development of proposal for private sector revolving fund.

BC ACE is rapidly becoming the industry association representing the Conservation and
Efficiency industry. BC ACE has gained recognition from the Provincial Government and the
Utilities.
BC ACE appreciates your support and recognizes your understanding that our collective work in
energy conservation and efficiency is critical for our industry growth.
Your commitment has been key to building our success to date and will be important to
continuing our leadership role.
We appreciate your contribution and hope you will renew your membership with BC ACE for

Treasurer’s Report – Management’s Statement on Financial Reporting
The financial statements are the responsibility of management and have been approved by the
Board of Directors. The financial statements are based upon management’s best estimates and
judgments and have been prepared with the application of generally accepted accounting
principles. To ensure the integrity and objectivity of the data, the management maintains a
system of internal controls comprising of policies and procedures that provide reasonable
assurance that transactions are records and executed in accordance with their authorization, that
assets are properly safeguarded, and that reliable financial records are being maintained.
