Brokenhead Ojibway Nation will be hosting the second gathering of the Lake Winnipeg Indigenous
Collective (LWIC). Join us as we develop the governance structure and determine our next steps.
Background
In September 2014, 28 participants representing 14 First Nations gathered
to discuss their concerns about the health of Lake Winnipeg. This gathering
resulted in a framework for moving forward with the LWIC. Nine champions
representing six First Nations have been meeting to determine the vision,
mission and values for the collective, and to begin to form partnerships and seek funding options.
The Champions would like to re-engage with the First Nations communities around the lake to move
the priorities and actions of LWIC forward. Other partner participants are welcome as observers.
We will be able to subsidize costs for up to 2 participants per First Nation community. Additional
members are welcome to attend, but will not be eligible for subsidies.
Hotel and Food for First Nations Representatives
For the two subsidized representatives, your accommodation at South Beach Casino and Hotel will be
arranged and paid for (based on double occupancy). During the conference light breakfasts and lunches
will be provided. Other meals will not be covered. You are welcome to stay at other accommodations
at your own expense.
Travel for First Nation Representatives
We will be able to provide a travel bursary for one vehicle per First
Nations community. You will be responsible for arranging your own
travel. We can also subsidize flights for those attending from remote
communities. The travel bursary amounts will depend on how many
people attend and will not cover all costs.
Other participants will be asked to contribute a registration fee of $80 for food and conference costs
and will be responsible for their travel and accommodation arrangements and costs. Rooms have been
set aside at South Beach Casino & Resort for June 1 and 2.
