WELCOME TO CRETE CARRIER
AND SHAFFER TRUCKING!
PRACTICAL ROUTE MILES
STUDENT PAY SCALE
LAYOVER, LOADING, UNLOADING,
AND EXTRA DROP PAY
Thank you for your interest in driving for one of the nation’s
premier truckload carriers. Crete Carrier and Shaffer Trucking
have earned a reputation for hiring the most professional
drivers. Having the lowest turnover in the industry confirms
Crete and Shaffer’s commitment to their drivers and the
drivers’ commitment to the company.
After successful completion of an approved driving school, all
students who will be solo drivers will begin an eight (8) week
On-The-Job-Training Program with a Driver Trainer. During this
program and thereafter the student will be paid as follows:
PAY SCALE
TIME PERIOD
RATE
All students in
All Fleets

program
$600 per week
All students in
All Fleets
After training
program and
until 6 months of
employment
Crete drivers earn $.35 and
Shaffer drivers earn $.37 per
practical mile.
After six months of employment, the student will receive
compensation at the “starting pay” as reflected in the Driver
Pay Summary of the fleet in which she or he elects to drive.
The time out on the road, dispatch method, and operating
area for the student can be determined by reviewing the
profile of the particular division in which the student elects
to drive.
The company also pays their drivers using Rand McNally
Practical Route Miles. Many companies in the industry use
what is referred to as “short route miles.” Our Practical Route
Miles reflect approximately five percent more miles—for
which you are paid—and more accurately represent your
actual route.
Layover eligibility requirements:
A. Subject to approval by Operations Management, if
the layover is an operational issue other than freight
availability you will earn layover pay at the rate of $100
for each 24 hour period.
B. If the layover is due to breakdown and you have timely
notified the Operations Department, depending on the
expected duration of the layover, a motel room may
be authorized.
Loading, unloading, pallet jack pull-off and related loading and
unloading services and extra stop offs will be paid according
to the company’s current loading/unloading payment schedule.
RIDER POLICY
Crete and Shaffer offer an exceptional rider policy at NO COST
to the driver. Authorized passengers are as follows:
Being a family owned company, we understand the
importance of home time. In the National Fleet drivers can
expect to be away from home for 18–24 days depending on
the residing area. Other fleets have options for home time
every 6–17 days.
A.Spouse, or
B. One child, stepchild, foster-child, niece, nephew or
grandchild 4 years of age or younger, provided they are
accompanied by the non-driving spouse, or
C. One child, stepchild, foster-child, niece, nephew or
grandchild 5 through 18 years of age, with or without
the non-driving spouse or adult, or
D. One adult 19 years old or older (after employed
30 days)
Drivers will be entitled to one day off for every six days out
on the road. Non-vacation home time will generally be limited
to a maximum of four consecutive days. Dedicated fleet
drivers who drive a tighter geographical area will be home
more often.
Family relationship must be verified and authorized by the
Safety Department prior to the passenger getting on the
truck. A limited number of authorized passengers can be
on the truck at any one time. Authorization is provided once
training has been completed and the new student has
