Events
Walk to Remember
Friday 26 June
Our Walk to Remember returns for its ninth year. This year it returns to its ladies-only
format. The walk is a fantastic fun event - inspired by remembering loved ones - to
raise essential funds for our Hospice. Walkers can choose either the original 7-mile
moonlit walk starting from Hawcoat Park, Barrow at 10pm, or the 11-mile Walk to
Remember Extra encouraging everyone to “Go the extra miles for St. Mary’s” –
starting from the Hospice at 9pm. To get involved you can simply register online
www.stmaryshospice.org.uk or volunteers are needed on the night as marshals and
to serve refreshments. Thank you!
Dementia Friends Information Session

Come along to a Dementia Friends Information session to lean a little more about
what it is like to live with dementia and turn that understanding into action.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014 Exhibition
30 April to 31 May
At the Dock Museum, North Road, Barrow.
The acclaimed Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition premieres at London's
Natural History Museum each year before touring more than sixty cities in the UK
and across the world. It showcases the award-winning images, bringing the talent
and vision of each photographer to all who visit. This stunning exhibition is coming to
the Dock Museum and Barrow-in-Furness for the first time in 2015. Free Admission
Cross Bay Walk Challenge
Saturday 30 May 2015
Cumbria Wildlife Trust is inviting people to ‘walk for wildlife’ as it announces its
annual Walk Across the Bay over the iconic Morecambe Bay sands.
The eight-mile sponsored walk will be led by the Queen’s Guide to the Sands,
Cedric Robinson, in the afternoon and will take in spectacular views of well-known
sites from the unusual perspective of the sands, such as Humphrey Head and
Arnside Knott.
Booking is essential, you can either complete a Cross Bay Walk Challenge 2015

Ulverston WalkFest
From Saturday 25 April to Monday 4 May
Located on the fringes of the Lake District National Park the WalkFest provides 10
days of walks for all ages and abilities celebrating the natural environment, industrial

Furness Breast Cancer Support Group
Monday 11 May
2pm - 4pm in the Green Room, The Forum, Duke Street, Barrow
A support group for everyone whose life has been affected by breast cancer, offering
support and information as well as a varied programme of interesting speakers and
demonstrations. Refreshments available.
This month’s topic is RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution)
presented by John Falvey.
The group meets once a month on the first Monday of every month except bank
holidays when it will be the second Monday.

Cervical, Ovarian, Vulval, Vaginal, Endometrial Cancer Support Group (COVE)

Run by cancer survivors. Meet people with similar experiences, for support and

Get on Track Walks
A full programme of monthly 2-3 hour walks will run in 2015, changing the day to the
first Thursday of each month. Each walk has been mapped out using every
station between Grange and Millom.
The walks are about 5 miles, taking up to 3 hours and can be over rough ground,
occasionally very wet underfoot. Most walks end in the vicinity of an agreeable place
to eat and drink. New walkers will be made very welcome.

CADAS Drug and Alcohol Awareness Course

A free two-day drug and alcohol awareness course for Parent/Carer. The course will
include information on drugs and alcohol and look at the effects of drugs and alcohol
and the impact it has on society.

We are looking for potential community projects for our team to work on. As long as
it is a community organisation or charity then we can help. In the past we have
assisted local sports clubs, community centres and schools. Team can help with,
painting & decorating, gardening, generally cleaning etc… The team will also raise
the funds themselves!!

St Mary’s Hospice Furniture Warehouse – FREE items
St Mary's Hospice Furniture Warehouse has some items of usable furniture which it
is willing to give away FREE rather than throw away. They currently have some
chairs, tables and a range of other items. They are on display outside their
warehouse on Wilkie Rd, opposite the Soccer Bar near the corner of Walney Rd,
Barrow currently.
There maybe a small delivery charge if delivery required - they are willing to
negotiate this dependent on circumstances. As they are a charity of course any
donations are always welcome no matter how small.
Basically they don't want to throw away anything that may be useful to anyone
experiencing difficult times and who could benefit from this offer. This will be a
regular thing that they have FREE items available so please let any of your
colleagues know who work with families who might benefit from this offer.

Calling all Bookworms!
Barrow Fire Station reception now has a small library where it invites people of all
ages to come and browse. Books can be taken for a small donation and returned
after reading for others to enjoy also. There are books that will meet all tastes and
covers all ages. All donations will go to The Firefighters Charity.

Disclosure and Barring Update Service
Free for Volunteers
Are you aware that you can subscribe to keep your disclosure certificate up to date?
The Update Service was introduced in 2013 to enable applicants keep their DBS
certificates up to date online and allow employers to check a certificate online. There
is no need to re-apply if you need multiple checks within the same workforce where
the same level and type of check is required.
You can join when you apply for your DBS check or, if you wait until you’ve received
your certificate you’ll have 19 calendar days from the date it was issued. The service
is currently only available online. If you need any help with this ask the organisation
you are volunteering for to assist.
How to Register
• Note your application form number (found in the top right hand corner of the
form)
• Use the application form number to join the Update Service at
www.gov.uk/dbs-update-service
• When you register you will get an ID number with your registration. You will
need this to log onto the service so make a note and keep it safe.
What you get
When you join you’ll get an online account that allows you to:
• Take a certificate from one volunteering role to the next
• Give organisations permission to check your certificate online, and see who
has checked it
• Add or remove a certificate

Local Area Coordinators Paula Warriner and Kev Bell are helping the people of
Hindpool, Central (including Barrow Island) and Ormsgill to feel safer, more secure
and more confident about their futures. They can point you in the right direction,
show you where to find information or help introduce you to someone who can help.
Perhaps you need to be heard or find practical ways of doing the things you want to
do. If you feel like you need some help or know someone who does then you should

Funding Opportunities
Cumbria County Council - Healthy Weight Grants
Pilot grants fund to community based projects and initiatives that will support the
healthy weight agenda these include interventions/projects that aim to:
• Increase physical activity
• Encourage/educate people to eat a healthy diet
• Improves access to healthy food
• Supports individuals that are overweight and obese to lose weight
• Build knowledge skills and capacity in the local community
• Fulfil community needs
Funded activities must be one or more of the following
• Initiatives that target children or families (children being seen as 0-16 and
priority given to 0-11 years)
• A new activity
• Developing or improving an existing activity
• Extending the range or scale of an activity that the applicant already does
such as offering an activity in a new area or with a different population/group
• Help to develop activities to sustain them in the future – such as training staff
or volunteers (or both) to provide food/physical activity or buying new
equipment that will be used well in the future
• A pilot
Quick turnaround of grant awards with the Neighbourhood Grants Panel who will
consider applications meeting monthly.

The NCI (Neighbourhood Care Independence) Small Grant Fund is available
again this year.
Small community groups and voluntary organisations or associations can apply for
up to £500
To apply for a grant from this programme you must be a charity or community group
providing services for:
•

Adults over 65
Some vulnerable adults under 65
People that require services or support to help them remain independent at
home
Volunteer-led groups such as luncheon clubs, “coffee and crack” groups,
practical or social activities to reach more people within their communities
through extending services, training current and recruiting new volunteers
helping to extend the reach of the service within a given community

The Types of Organisations We Can Fund
Constituted* community groups and voluntary organisations or associations - with a
social purpose and with at least 3 unrelated people aged over 18 on the
management committee
*to be a constituted organisation, a group or organisation will need to have a
governing document, e.g. a set of rules, which sets out how the organisation works
and does not allow profit to be taken. Applicants will be required to attach a signed
and dated governing document or set of operating rules with their application form.
If you are not currently constituted then Cumbria CVS can assist you with this simple
process.
Programme Criteria
We will support community organisations and groups with projects and activities
which meet each of the following criteria:
Your project aims to
• support an improvement in health and well-being in your community
• target people who are at a higher risk of poor health.
• ensure that there is community participation in the project, and
• Your project is local
• Your project is relevant, practical and can make a positive difference to the
local community

There is no deadline for applications but once all the funding has been allocated we
will not be able to process any further applications. Funding awarded must be spent
before April 2016.
Grants from the Frieda Scott Charitable Trust
There have been a few changes at the Frieda Scott Trust that we thought local
charities should know about. We still offer grants to local voluntary/charitable
organisations in South Lakeland (and the former Westmorland area) with particular
concern for those who are working with the most disadvantaged and vulnerable in
our society, but here’s what’s new:
• they’re not just small grants … Trustees will now consider requests of up
to £20,000 per year
• even larger grants will occasionally be made for projects that make a big
difference to disadvantaged groups
• multi-year applications will also be considered where there is an ongoing
or longer-term need
• as before, Trustees will consider requests for either capital (e.g.
equipment) or revenue (e.g. salaries)

individual groups (e.g. scouts & guides) are welcome to apply rather than
going through their regional body, including local amateur sporting clubs.
