CLE 5.2.UP03 Software Release Announcement for
CLE 5.2.UP03 Software Release Announcement for Cray XC Systems
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The CLE 5.2.UP03 update release is a General Availability release.
This Software Announcement applies to Cray XC series systems.
This CLE 5.2.UP03 update release supports initial software installations on the following platforms: Cray
XC series systems. The CLE 5.2.UP03 release also supports an update from the previous CLE 5.2.UP02
release.
Hardware Support for Cray XC Series Systems
Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product family (formally codenamed Ivy Bridge-EP) support.
Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v3 product family (formally codenamed Haswell-EP) support is provided
with this release.
DataWarp Support
Support for IO Blades with PCIe Solid State Drive (SSD) is provided with this release. DataWarp/SSD IO
blades provide local, high bandwidth, low latency storage for the buffering of data between the
applications and the external parallel file system.
DataWarp Phase 0 released with CLE 5.2.UP02XC provides a simple local /scratch storage option using
DVS to project an XFS file system onto the compute nodes. It is limited to multiple namespaces separate file systems on each SSD node. There is no striping across SSD nodes. Phase 0 also offers an
interim swap implementation. Both scratch and swap are configured statically via a config file prior to
booting the system.
While CLE 5.2.UP02XC supports only the SanDisk Fusion line of SSD cards, CLE 5.2.UP03XC adds the
NVMe driver, enabling the use of other SSD cards including Samsung and Intel. Refer to S-2547-5203
Cray DataWarp SSD Installation and Configuration Guide.
Kepler (NVIDIA Tesla K20/K20X family) Support
CLE 5.2.UP03 supports Kepler GPUs with CUDA 6.5 based libraries. CUDA 6.5 on Cray systems is
supported by CCE 8.3.6 and later, libsci_acc 3.1.1 and later, and Perftools 6.2.2 and later. Applications
built with CUDA Toolkit 6.5 and using the MPI GPU-to-GPU feature need to use MPT 7.1 or later.
NVIDIA Tesla K40 Support
Tesla K40 GPUs are supported on Cray XC series systems.

KNC Support
KNC (officially known as Intel's Xeon Phi Coprocessor codenamed Knights Corner) is supported on Cray
XC series systems.
Software Overview
Software enhancements and features that were introduced with the initial or base CLE 5.2 release are
described in Cray Linux Environment (CLE) 5.2 Software Release Overview, S-2425-52.
The Cray Linux Environment (CLE) Software Release Overview Supplement, S-2497-5203, provides an
overview of software enhancements that are introduced in this update release.
The System Management Workstation (SMW) 7.2.UP03 release also provides several key enhancements
that directly impact the operation of your Cray system running the CLE 5.2.UP03 release. For more
information, see the README provided with the SMW Release.
Cray requires installing the SMW 7.2.UP03 release before installing the CLE 5.2.UP03 release. For more
information, reference the SMW 7.2.UP03 documentation.
Cray Programming Environment support in CLE 5.2.UP03
For XC40 systems, CLE 5.2.UP03 requires the CDT 1.16 or later Programming Environment release.
CDL (Cray Development and Login) and CIMS (Cray Integrated Management Services)
Requirements
CLE 5.2.UP03 requires ESL-XC-2.2.0 for CDL Customers. Customers with a managed CDL will require
ESM-XX-3.0.0 for their CIMS.
Sites with both a CDL and a CLFS that are upgrading to CLE 5.2.UP03 will be required to upgrade their
CIMS to ESM-XX-3.0.0 and their CDL to ESL-XC-2.2.0 or later. The previous limitation that the CLFS
release of ESF-XX-2.2.0 needs to be a fresh installation has been resolved with bug 811115, FN5993.
Sites with a CLFS that are upgrading to BCM-XX-3.0.0 will need FN5993 installed before doing the CLFS
upgrade.
This release package was run on Cray XC series systems and our testing found some limitations
compared with previous CLE releases. Limitations are documented in the CLE5.2Limitations.txt file.
The objective of this CLE 5.2.UP03 package is to provide our customers with updated support for Cray XC
series systems.
PLEASE REVIEW THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for every update listed in this README as some
changes apply to all updates. Significant changes are summarized below:
5.2.UP03 - Update CLE 5.2.UP03 package.
Lustre 2.5.2 is the default Lustre client and DAL server version.
See README for recommended patches and FNs.
