This is the first newsletter from Evocative Art and Heritage with a reminder that the Creative Arts Retreat is just a
few weeks away! Thank you to all of you who have booked one of the fantastic workshops. If you are intending to

The Creative Arts Retreat offers workshops in a range of visual arts media, taught by 9 artist-tutors who will share
their expert skills and knowledge with you and support you while you explore, experiment and create. This is a
chance for you to take time out from your busy life to spend immersed in creative activity in the company
of other art lovers, devoting all your attention to YOU and YOUR ART– go on, treat yourself! Some tutors
are from interstate or overseas so you may not have the chance to work with them again.

CORDULA KAGEMANN, GERMANY - EXPLORING COLLAGE
5 days - 19-23 April 2015.
Play is an important part of creativity. Come and play by experimenting with different textures and surfaces using
a variety of papers, cardboards and fabrics together with acrylic paint. At first, free your mind and be guided by
your intuition, then make deliberate design decisions. Juxtapose different materials, patterns and images to
create tension. Create new and unusual pictorial contexts by combining abstract or patterned space with a
concrete image. Experiment, explore, develop and design a series of collages. Suitable for all levels. Read further

GRACE PALEG, NSW - THE PASSAGE OF LIGHT IN PASTEL
5 DAYS. (1 & 2 DAY OPTIONS AVAILABLE: DAYS 1 & 2 Still life; Days 3 & 4 Portraits; Day 5 Landscape).
Grace is a master pastel artist who is able to capture the beauty and ethereal qualities and iridescence of light as
it passes across and through materials such as glass, china, gilding, mother-or-pearl, or sheer fabrics. She has
recently begun using precious metal foils to add an extra dimension to her work. Join Grace for a fabulous
workshop in which you will produce a series of works in still life, portraits and landscape and learn how to use
colour, tone and contrast to explore the qualities of light on different surfaces. Suitable for all levels. To learn

‘REVEALING THE MAGIC OF NATURE: SCULPTURE’ – 2 days – 19 and 20 April 2015
‘THE HIDDEN BEAUTY OF NATURE REVEALED IN DIGITAL ART’ - 3 days – 21-23 April 2015
In 2013, Judith beautiful artwork ‘Flights of Fancy’ won the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize and the People’s
Choice award at the South Australian Museum, and in 2014 she won the Peoples’ Choice award with three new
works exhibited in the Loreto Spring Art Show. Her artworks stunned exhibition visitors with the beauty, skill and
delicacy of her gorgeous sculptures made using delicate paper filigree embellished with organic materials such as
leaves, bulb casings, seed pods and berries. Judith is offering two workshops in which she will share her skills in
creating sculptural forms out of organic materials, and using photography and digital manipulation to create
digital art works as well as a tool for assisting with her design processes for other media. Beginners will have
plenty of support and more experienced artists will find new ways to use these media. Computers are provided.

MEGHAN O’ROURKE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA - CHANGING COLOURS: ANODISED TITANIUM JEWELLERY

How do you turn plain titanium into iridescent rainbow colours? Meghan will show you! In this fascinating
workshop you will learn how to use an electric current to change dull metal into rainbow colours. An alchemist’s
delight! Not quite turning lead into gold but close. Basic metal texturing and jewellery techniques will be included
for those who want to turn their treasures into something wearable. All levels welcome. Materials fee will apply.

CATHERINE O’LEARY - ‘PAINTING WITH FIBRE AND FABRIC’

A nuno feltmaking workshop with a difference! Catherine is one of Australia’s leading fibre artists and author of
From Felt to Fabric: New Techniques in Nuno Felting, published by Lark Crafts. She explores the sculptural qualities
of felt using nuno prefelts to achieve colourful mosaic-like patterns. In her own work she exploits diagonal and
assymetrical forms to create swirling garments that are both attractive and flattering. The main focus of this
workshop will be on surface decoration and the manipulation of garment design or you can make a decorative

CATHY MOON, QUEENSLAND– ‘SCULPTURED SILK SHIBORI and WEARABLES’
5 days - 19-23 April 2015.
Forget the garish tie-dyed clothes of the 1960s hippy. The Japanese take the technique into the realm of art. In
this workshop you will learn basic shibori techniques of arashi and itajime - stitching, folding, binding and dyeing and apply them to silk fabrics to make simple but stunning wearables suitable for a wide variety of figure types.
Then explore how some shibori techniques can be used to produce three- dimensional effects and create stunning
sculptural accessories such as neckpieces, collars, cuffs and scarves. Suitable for all levels. Learn more about

SUSIE MCMAHON, TASMANIA - CONVERSATIONS WITH DOLLS: MIXED MEDIA SCULPTURE & ASSEMBLAGE
5 days - 19-23 April 2015.
There are a surprising number of skills involved in making art dolls – one-of-a-kind handmade character figures.
Susie McMahon has been making dolls for over forty years, fashioning highly individual character figures from
polymer or air-dried clay which she then paints to create sensitively-drawn figures whose gaze is almost lifelike.
They are then finished before adding hair, clothing and other accessories. Some are placed within specific settings
as part of assemblages with birds or other creatures. In this workshop you will design, sculpt, and paint a
sculptural figure - human or otherwise - and then design, colour, cut, stitch and decorate clothing and other

DANIEL GIBBINGS-JOHNS, SA - SUCCESS WITH COLOUR: MONOTONE UNDER-PAINTING METHOD EXPLAINED

Explore the technique of monochromatic painting as the basis of a painting. Daniel will demonstrate and teach the
method as used by Hans Heysen, explaining and illustrating how underpainting accurate tonal values prior to
applying colour, enables you to create a satisfying composition, effective colour values, and believable form and
depth in your paintings. Whether you are a total beginner or an intermediate artist seeking to improve your

How much do the workshops cost?
1 day, full price = $155, Yr 10-12 student rate = $100.
2 days, full price =$310, Yr 10-12 student rate = $195.
3 days, full price = $460, Yr 10-12 student rate = $295.
4 days, full price = $615, Yr 10-12 student rate = $390.
5 days, full price = $750, Yr 10-12 student rate = $485.
