REPUBLICAN WOMEN OF
WORCESTER COUNTY
MARCH NEWSLETTER (2015 Issue 3)

General Meeting
Thursday, March 26, 2015
Golden Sands Condominium
109th St. Ocean City—22nd Floor
Doors Open at 10:30 am—Meeting begins at 11:00 am
SPEAKER: Michael Franklin, President and CEO of Atlantic General Hospital will discuss the hospital's
strategic plan and update us on the latest program and staff additions to the hospital.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: The Groundhog was right! Wow,
what a wild time we’ve had with the cold and snow. We even had to cancel our
February meeting. I love winter but even I’m ready for spring. I don't have
much to share this month other than we enjoyed a wonderful day in Annapolis,
for Red Scarf Day! Mary Beth is working so hard and I think she’s shining as a
"newbie". Beth Rodier, Carol Frazier, Dottie Toms and I were escorted to
Mary Beth's lovely office which has some beautiful prints depicting the
Eastern Shore. There was even a box of saltwater taffy. It made us feel right at
home. She had only a few minutes to get a bite to eat with us at the brunch and
then a quick picture on the House Legislative Floor. We’re so proud of her. She’s going to be a really good
Delegate. The MarVa Theater in Pocomoke will be showing American Sniper this Friday and Saturday, March
13 and 14 at 7 pm. I've never been there but understand it's been restored and is very interesting. I hope we can
get a group together and maybe carpool from the Ocean Pines Library. We could go early and get dinner at the
restaurant there. Call me if you’re interested. We may be too late for this but the National Federation of
Republican Women’s Spring Board Meeting is March 19—21. I would really like to have our Benghazi Bracelet
Awareness Table there, if only I had some volunteers—Hint! Hint! Just call or email Dottie Toms,
[email protected] 301-788-4386, Leith Clinton, [email protected] 410-206-3696 or me
[email protected]. 443-880-0069. Please always feel free to call, text or email me if you have questions. I
hope to see you all soon. In God We Trust,
Beverly Bigler, President

CARING FOR AMERICA: Here we are into March and I have not thanked everyone for their support for
the Valentines for Veterans Program and especially Charlotte Cathell who did all the leg work to collect the
valentines and get them to Copy Central on time. She had additional challenges with the bad weather and snowy
conditions, as did the schools. Thanks also go to Linda Dearing and her staff at Copy Central for again providing
the boxing and shipping. As I say each year, the children are the stars along with their teachers but we could not
complete the requests without community support. Other Caring for America Projects have been helping
Worcester G.O.L.D fill Easter Baskets for two local children in need, the Armed Forces Day Program, donation
of an American flag to a local school and serving as docents at the Veterans Memorial Educational Programs and
Ocean City Art League House Tour. If you have other suggestions on how RWWC can serve our community
please let me or the president know. I also thank the many volunteers who have helped in the past.

LITERACY: Playing Catch-Up! In December, RWWC Members Lou Etta
McClaflin, Vera Beck, Joanna Krieger and I joined with parents and other
volunteers to help with the annual Book Swap at Showell Elementary School.
During the swap, students are able to exchange books they have read for an
equal number of books from available stock. Lou Etta commented that the
higher grades didn’t have a large pool of books from which to select… and
another great idea was born. Our club could collect books throughout the year
for older children which have more reading—enough to need chapters with
few or no pictures. We would then donate these books to the school along
with the ink cartridges and coupons we regularly collect. One good idea spawns another and Loretta Spinuzza
suggested that senior centers might enjoy used books and magazines. So we are beginning our pilot program in
March to collect adult books and magazines. If we receive sufficient donations we will take them to the
Worcester County Senior Centers in Berlin and Ocean City. The senior centers will then determine what
materials are good for them and we can tailor the program to their needs. So please consider donating books for
the school and magazines and books for the senior centers. Also remember we’re still collecting used ink
cartridges and cereal box top coupons. All items can be brought to our meeting each month. Thanks to Janet
Morse who has already brought in a number of children’s books for the school. DON’T FORGET: Books that
use chapters, used ink cartridges, adult books and magazines for seniors. You are AWESOME Women—thank
you!

MDGOP SPRING CONVENTION: The convention this year will be held right here in Ocean City at the
Princess Royale Hotel. The RWWC will have two tables set up for those attending—A Welcome Table and a
Benghazi Bracelet Table. At our Welcome Table we will have gift bags which will contain items related to
Ocean City and Ocean Pines. The Benghazi Bracelet Table will sell the bracelets RWWC created in
remembrance of those killed in the attack on our consulate in Libya. We will need volunteers to man both tables
during the two day of the convention, April 17 and 18. There will be sign-up sheets at the next meeting and you
are encouraged to volunteer to spend a couple of hours greeting our Republican friends from around the state. On
Friday Night, April 17 the Worcester County Republican Central Committee will be hosting a Hospitality Room
and we will help by providing baked desserts and/or appetizers. If you can provide either, there will also be signup for refreshments at the March meeting.
SAVE THE DATE: On May 7 there will be a luncheon to honor Maryland’s First
Lady, Yumi Hogan. This will be hosted by the MFRW at the Westin Hotel in
Annapolis from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm. The cost is $58 per person.
SUNSHINE: Until further notice, please call Barbara Loffler 410-208-0890
whenever you learn that one of our members is ill or has had a death in the
family. Thanks for your help.
