About the award…
The NRAAO Awards Committee recommended to
the Board of Directors of NRAAO at its executive
board meeting in October, 2004 at Springfield,
Massachusetts that there be an award given by the
NRAAO, to one member for their life-time
commitment to the assessing profession.
At the NRAAO executive board meeting at
Uncasville, Connecticut, in April 2005 the NRAAO
Executive Board recommended that such award be
known as the "Richard L. Prendergast Life-time
Achievement Award" for outstanding service to
the assessment profession and in honor and
memory of Richard (Dick) Prendergast's creation of
NRAAO and his untiring efforts to assist assessors
throughout the entire country and in particular the
northeast.
Dick Prendergast was born and raised an Irish brat
in the west end of Hartford, CT where he learned
the ultimate finesse of street smarts and the real
world of city politics. After attending Hartford High
School, Dick went into the service as a Marine,
having a distinguished career serving our country in
Korea where he made many close friends including
Ted Williams and Gerry Coleman...so the reason he
became a Boston fan. Rumor has it that Dick
developed the term "Luck of the Irish" after a
NRAAO meeting in Boston.
The Richard L. Prendergast Life-Time Achievement
Award was discussed and accepted by the NRAAO
Board at the 2005 Connecticut conference with the
first presentation being given in Uncasville,
Connecticut that same year.
Congratulations, Karen, on receiving the
2015
Richard L. Prendergast Life-Time
Achievement Award

Fire Department personnel participated in various recent training exercises. Training was held on Rescue
from Heights and also ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting). The Department teamed up with local
business, Granite Ridge Energy, and utilized one of their stacks to provide a simulated rescue from heights
of an injured employee. Battalion Chief James Roger coordinated the training so that members from both
the Fire Department and Granite Ridge could exercise their roles and responsibilities in an emergency
situation. This location also provided the Fire Department a real life elevated scenario to utilize newly
acquired rope rescue equipment. Crews worked in various roles to reach the victim, prepare for
extrication, and lower the victim (mannequin) approximately 75’ to the ground.
The Manchester Airport Fire Department also extended an offer to participate in joint ARFF training. This
training was graciously hosted at the Litchfield Sand and Gravel Pit in Litchfield, and training and props
provided by the State of Michigan through Kellogg Community College. The mobile training prop and
instructors travelled to New Hampshire to provide realistic training. Crews were able to train on various
fires including aircraft engine, cockpit, brake/wheel, and flammable liquids. Londonderry crews were also
able to train utilizing one of the Crash Fire Rescue Trucks from the airport for a good review. In the event
of a real aircraft Emergency, Manchester Crash Fire Rescue will utilize the Londonderry Fire Department
for support.
The vacant Firefighter position at the Department has been filled. FF Brian Schofield has been offered
employment for the Town of Londonderry. He is a lateral transfer from the Town of Hudson, N.H. Fire
Department. We welcome him aboard and wish him well for his career here in Londonderry. The
Department is also seeking applications for position of Part Time Telecommunications operator.
The Department awarded the ambulance contract for a new ambulance to AEV out of Jefferson, North
Carolina. This new ambulance will be replacing our oldest ambulance, and AEV is no stranger to the
Department. The ambulance is expected to arrive at the Department by spring of 2016. This replacement
will help to maintain the fleet of 3 Advanced Life Support Ambulances that are operated at the Fire
Department.
Finally, there have been several serious accidents that our personnel have responded to over recent weeks.
Please use caution while driving and take the extra time to look out for motorcycles, pedestrians, and other
vehicles. Use of seatbelts in automobiles, and helmets on motorcycles really can make a difference. Also, as
a friendly reminder, the State’s “hands free law” goes into effect in July. Be safe and enjoy the beginning of
summer.

3 large cucumbers cut into slices (using a food processor makes this much
easier and less time consuming!)
1 pint grape tomatoes, halved
3 bell peppers – I used red, yellow & orange
4 ears fresh corn
1 bunch dill, cut fine or chiffonade
Several tsp. red wine vinegar
Dash of olive oil
Salt & pepper
Liquid stevia to taste – I used about 1/2 a dropperfull
Instructions
In a large bowl combine cut veggies, salt
& fresh cracked pepper, stevia, olive oil
and dill. Use a large spoon to mix gently.
Taste and adjust flavors as needed. I didn’t
give exact measurements for this recipe
because I know that the size of your
veggies will vary quite a bit so start small
and then keep tasting and adjusting!!
Cooking is all about variability so just go
with it! If you start conservatively, you
can always just add more salt, pepper,
vinegar as you go!
This salad can be served right away or you
can let it sit overnight to marinate.
