Water Activities
Kids & Pre-school - Water Exploration
Splash 1: 8:55 a.m. – 9:25 a.m.| 6 months and older,
not comfortable with face in the water
Splash 2: 9:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.| 2 years and older,
comfortable with face in the water
This class is great for both kids who love bath time and
those kids who are nervous about water in their faces.
By singing songs and playing games in the pool,
students will explore their faces in the water, but they
never are forced. Some of the basic skills are: water
adjustment, breath control, balance, and personal pool
safety. We also practice boating safety and basic first
aid by the water. Students are fitted with a Coast Guard
approved lifejacket before going in the small inflatable
boat. The CERC is a wonderful place to meet new
friends and learn basic water skills.

14 and older)

Water Aerobics

Water Aerobics is a fun way to work
out, great for your heart, builds stronger muscles,
improves posture, and allows meeting new people.
Routines are in a musical and aquatic environment. No
swimming skills are needed. This class is great for
adults of all ages.

County and the Hasting
Area School System’s
Community Education
program are cosponsoring swimming
lessons on Saturday
mornings at the
Community Education
and Recreation Center.
The class levels are listed below and classes may be
combined depending on the number of students
enrolled. All classes will be supervised by a
certified instructor.
Please use the descriptions listed below to choose
the level for which to register the student.
Registration can be done through the YMCA
(checks payable to YMCA) or at the Community
Education (checks payable to CERC)
Polliwog I – Introduction to swimming, little or no
skill level. Students will be introduced to basic
swimming skills and increase their comfort in the
water.
Polliwog II – Has taken Polliwog I and/or is
comfortable in shallow and deep water with a
personal floatation device (PFD). Students should
be able to put face into the water.
Guppy – Must know front crawl, as well as front
and back float.
The classes are filled on a first come, first served
basis, and all students must be pre-registered for
the swim lessons!

The Community Education program is offering a
coached swimming fitness program that is affiliated
with the U.S. Masters Swimming organization. USMS is
a national organization that provides workout
information, competitions, clinics, and
workshops. This program is open to individuals 18
years of age and older who want to train for open
water swimming, as triathletes, or for competition, or
who like challenging swimming workouts for
the exercise benefit.
As part of the U.S. Masters Swimming program you can
try the class for one month at no charge. Please contact
instructor Bobbie Taffee for more information. (269838-7587)

and First Aid Class

Instructor: Ardie Reid
The first aid class covers basic
bandaging, splinting, burns, and
medical emergencies such as bee stings, shock, diabetic,
heart and stroke. There will be hands on practice with
splinting and bandaging and epi-pen trainer.
This class requires a minimum of three people to
participate. Please register in advance.

This exciting boot camp offers an all-around package
of fitness instruction, nutrition, recipes, support, and
online access to many resources. It incorporates Tabata
and a HIIT type workout in 20-10 second intervals. It
is 20 seconds of intense workout, followed by 10
seconds of rest. This HIIT type of work out helps your
body burn more calories even after exercise is done.
The class includes meeting twice a week with Tina to go
over fitness goals, lifestyle choices, how to use gym
equipment; receive a Tabata workout, and instructions
on exercise and nutrition.
Participants are required to create an account at
www.tabatabootcamp.com. There is a small fee to
create this account (less than $10). With this you
receive access to online exercise videos, recipes,
nutrition, and much more. Please plan on meeting with
Tina on March 30th at 6:30 p.m. to help get your
program set up.
It's perfect for the beginner exerciser that is looking for
direction of where to start.
This class does require a minimum of four people to
participate. Please pre-register for this class so we can
plan properly to run this class.
Zumba

Zumba is a fast paced dance class type workout.
The workouts are fun and energizing, set to
modern music. All fitness levels are welcome.

Rose
Yoga is a form of exercise that involves
combining posture, breathing, and meditation into
poses. This course is suitable for beginners and
seasoned yoga students.

Cost: $30

Instructor: Maiya Merrick
Have you ever picked up a hula hoop at the store, but
were unable to make it work? With the right hoop and
a few pointers you can be hoop dancing in no time!
This low impact, upbeat, aerobic workout allows you to
have fun while burning calories. Hoop dance
strengthens core muscles, tones the entire body,
reduces stress, and creates a feeling of joy and
laughter. This class is geared for beginners and
intermediate hoopers who are excited about fitness and
want to learn a new trick or two.
Hoops will be provided but you may purchase your
own. Information will be available on purchasing
hoops.

CPR

This class will cover how to perform CPR on adults and
children. It also will cover how to operate
AED machines (automated external defibrillation). All
participants will receive a certification card upon
completion. Learn how to save a life!

Yoga is a wonderful activity for children to explore
self-awareness. This class will help your child discover
the power in both action and stillness.

This five week class taught
by Ms. Offerman, Central’s
and Southeastern’s elementary art teacher is an
introduction to jewelry making class.
The Animal Appreciation Class will teach the
responsibility of owning
an animal, the
importance of
spay/neuter, vet care,
and the adoption
process. Information
regarding volunteer
programs such as the
Litter Program, Senior
Program, and Spay Day is also given. This class
lets the children spend lots of hands on time with
the animals. It is a great class for any child who
has a pet, wants a pet, or just loves animals.
In this class students will make and take home a few
different necklaces and bracelets that exceed the
rainbow loom ideas. They will learn how to tie on a
clasp and thread beads onto a string in various different
ways to create wonderful gifts.
Warrior Tae Kwon Do

In this class, children will explore different mediums of
art, crafts and hands-on activities in class, while
learning and interacting with story books and
examples. We want the students to see many options
and types of artistic styles to help them become
confident in the unique art that they can create!
Come and join us in learning this martial arts training.
Feel free to come and check out what this is all about
with a drop rate of just $5.00. Parents of new students
need to meet with the instructor to discuss class
information. Nicole will be available at the CERC
before classes start and immediately following class
each Tuesday.

Lifeguard Certification Class
For: 15 years and Up
Dates: To Be Determined
Location: CERC Classroom & Pool
Cost: $215
Lifeguard course Prerequisites:
Must be able to successfully complete the following:
Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath
control and rhythmic breathing. You may swim using
the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both
but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim
goggles may be used.
Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. You
should place your hands under your armpits.
Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl
or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10
pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards
on your back to return to the starting point with both
hands holding the object while keeping your face at or
near the surface so you are able to get a breath. You
should not swim the distance under water. Exit the pool
without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute 40
seconds.
Don’t forget to bring your suit and a picture ID.

CERC Policies and Information: You will receive a full refund if you cancel three days prior to the start of the first day
of the class or workshop. If the minimum number of students does not enroll, you will receive a full refund.
Wait List Policy: After the maximum number of students enrolls, you will be placed on a waiting list and will be
contacted when an opening is available.
Weather and Facility Cancellation Hotlines: CERC programs may be cancelled when a severe weather or tornado
warning has been issued. Whenever the Hastings Area School System closes, CERC programs may be cancelled as
