Hazon Summer Internships
Hazon works to create healthier and more sustainable communities in the Jewish world and
beyond. In aggregate, we’re seeking to shift the nature of what it means to be Jewish in the 21 st
century – enabling and encouraging Jewish people to have an impact in the world and
transforming Jewish life in the process. We are based in New York and have a retreat center in
Falls Village, CT and offices in San Francisco, Denver, Boulder, San Diego, and Philadelphia.
Our summer internships are listed below with instructions for application at the end.
Food Programs Intern
Your responsibilities will include:
Supporting food events such as the New York Jewish Food Festival, Food Conference, and a
summer off-site working space on Governors Island




Supporting food events such as a Shmita Festival on Governor’s Island
Supporting the revision of food-related resources, such as our sustainable holiday
resources, Food Audit and Guide, CSA material, program activity guides, and creating a
system of feedback and evaluation
Working on our meat reduction materials, and revising our website’s food and meatrelated pages
Researching and developing a new food policy and food audit program
We are looking for interns with the following skills and qualities:










Excellent communication and organizational skills
Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills
Detail-oriented and conscientious
Ability to work independently on projects as well as work collaboratively with a small
staff
Comfortable prioritizing multiple tasks, problem solving, and being creative with limited
resources
Strong research skills and an ability to synthesize information into an easily
understandable format
Sharp analytical thinking
Creativity and a desire to take initiative and suggest fresh ideas
Previous experience in writing and editing, food work, or nonprofit communications a
plus
Experience working with a WordPress or other web platform
Greening and Editorial Intern
The intern will help support the work of Hazon’s Jewish Greening Fellowship (JGF), an
unparalleled network of 55 New York Jewish institutions working to cut their carbon footprint,
reduce waste, and promote environmental education. JGF represents one of the largest and
most prominent Jewish communal responses to climate change. The intern will also support the
Jewish Climate Change Campaign, a climate change advocacy and awareness-raising initiative,
and the Jew and the Carrot, a leading blog produced in conjunction with the Forward
newspaper about food, sustainability, and Judaism.
Your responsibilities will include:






Supporting the daily management of JGF, including setting up visits to JGF institutions,
writing for JGF’s newsletter, and assisting with JGF field trips.
Researching and editing a greening resource guide that helps Jewish institutions start
the greening process.
Updating and improving the JGF website and a working on an online promotional video
about JGF.
Researching and developing a sustainability audit and certification
Promoting the Jewish Climate Change Campaign’s online presence and posting content.
Writing and researching posts for the Jew and the Carrot, editing others’ posts, and
finding multimedia content.

Teva Intern
The Teva intern will support Teva’s work to fundamentally transform Jewish education through
experiential learning that fosters Jewish, ecological, and food sustainability. Teva works year
round with students in day schools and Jewish organizations from early childhood education to
campus Hillels and family programs. We develop programming to bridge Jewish tradition and
the natural world by combining the best of experiential outdoor education with deep Jewish
learning.
Your responsibilities will include:







Support Teva’s wacky and wonderful Topsy Turvy Bus Tour
Coordinate the sustainability component of the Bus Tour’s journey
Help develop curriculum materials and programming handouts
Research environmental education programs and the development of outdoor
classrooms
Contribute to and review Teva web material and social media presence
Contribute to Teva’s educational and art materials, possibly in Hebrew and English
Potential for development of teaching skills through outdoor and environmental
programs in the New York area
We are looking for interns with the following skills and qualities:







Strong writing and communication skills
Detail-oriented and conscientious
Comfortable prioritizing multiple tasks, problem solving, and being creative with limited
resources
Willing to work as part of a highly collaborative team, and independently
Interest in outdoor education
Extensive knowledge of Judaism or environmental science a plus but not required
Artistic ability or interest a plus but not required
Marketing and Communications Intern
Your responsibilities will include:





Learn about and help with Wordpress-related website edits and html-based email
production
Catalog photo and video footage
Research and post on Jewish community online calendars
Update media list
Creative design and/or multimedia projects also possible based on qualifications

You must be able to commit to 30-40 hours of work per week.
