EXCELLENCE IN ALL THINGS
DEAR COMMUNITY FRIENDS,
Dear Community Friends,
It seems for the past six years, our message to you in our Annual Report
has been one of great thanks to you for your support in helping us grow.
This year will be no exception. You, the good people of Adams County,
have contributed to another year of outstanding growth for Adams
County Community Foundation.
Why are YOU so important?
• Your outpouring of generosity made the 2014 Giving Spree the most
successful event ever. With your contributions, over $138,000 was
returned to the community in the way of gifts to participating nonprofit organizations for Good.
• Your investment enabled almost $500,000 in total to be returned to
the community strengthening and building a healthy Adams County.
• Your confidence in this Foundation led to receipt of $1.3 million
in endowment gifts with 15 new permanent, endowed charitable
funds all of which will return investment to the community for Ever.
This annual report includes all the details. Enjoy a good read!
As Adams County Community Foundation continues its commitment to
impact lives in Adams County, we are honored to partner with YOU. . .

giving Spree...
We changed the name! We added a matching dollars
incentive! We reached out to 13,000 households in
Adams County.
WOW! What an impact it made!
Over 400 donors joined the giving frenzy on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 to give $118,000 in gifts to 50
qualified non-profit organizations that serve the people
of Adams County. To that, Adams County Community
Foundation added a generous gift of $20,000 offered by
the Thomas E. and Florence B. Metz Fund. This gift was
distributed to the organizations based on the percentage of gifts they received against total gifts.
Chris Kellet, Chair of the Interfaith Center for Peace and
Justice, said it best, “On behalf of ICPJ (and myself!) I
wish to thank you for your hard work in putting on the
Annual Giving Spree. Your matching funds are greatly

appreciated but, as import, is the event and the exposure it provides for non-profits to share their vision and
mission—Keep up your good work!”
Great thanks to our hard working committee and
chair, Judie Butterfield. Great thanks to Times & News
Publications Publisher Harry Hartman for his outstanding support in printing and delivering our Gift Book to
13,000 households and Production Designer Loretta
Plitt who assisted many non-profits in fine-tuning their
message.
So, what could we do to top 2014? Just watch us! We
have some very exciting changes and additions planned
for 2015. We want to top $200,000. Why? Because
these gifts impact Adams County.

Impacting Lives of the Disabled
On the back of a horse disabilities disappear! In 2014
the families of 212 participants experienced this reality.
At Shinning Stars Therapeutic Riding Program, riders
get the therapy they need from the horses they love and
see miracles happen as children with disabilities become
focused and attentive. Thanks to a $5,000 grant from the
foundation for the indoor arena flooring, people confined
to wheelchairs look down at friends with confidence as
they maneuver their horse through arena obstacles. Over
200 individuals from our community volunteer their time
to make all of this a possibility. No rider is ever turned
away because of an inability to pay for services.
“This can only happen because of the blessings and
support we receive from individual donors and through
grants such as this one from Adams County Community
Foundation.” Brandy Crago, Director

DOOR OPENERS
Impacting the Future
Professional Advisors, be they attorneys,
accountants, investment advisors or insurance
professionals, can have a major impact on the
health and well-being of the Adams County
community. These advisors work with individuals
around their estate planning or business ventures or
managing their personal wealth. With that advising
may come the need or simply the desire to plan
charitable gifts.
People who love their community and make
charitable gifts during their lifetime may wish to
make their giving easier or may wish to continue
their giving beyond their lifetimes. Professional
advisors help their clients make these wishes come
true by guiding them to Adams County Community
Foundation to start a permanent named fund. When
they refer their clients to the Foundation to start an
endowment fund, we recognize these professionals
as “Door Openers.”
Door Openers for 2014 are attorneys
Alan Kim Patrono and John S. Phillips and
investment managers at PNC Wealth.
philanthropy... love of people
Philanthropy literally means “love” “(philos) of “people” (anthropos) so it is means much more than sending a check.
Philanthropy ensures that the causes and people you care about are supported in perpetuity. It can give you the
opportunity to start or carry on a family giving legacy. By establishing a fund with ADAMS COUNTY COMMUNITY
FOUNDATION, you have an opportunity for IMPACTING LIVES:
PERMANENCE
The Community Foundation’s infiniteness ensures that your
contribution will continually and forever meet needs that
are relevant to your interests and the community’s needs.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
The Community Foundation can expertly assist you in
identifying charitable organizations and programs that
address your particular interests and local community needs.
STEWARDSHIP
The Community Foundation’s Board of Directors, with
guidance from its Investment & Finance Committee
and outside investment advisors, closely monitors the
performance of professional investment managers. The
Foundation makes a full accounting to the community
through its annual report, audit and IRS Form 990.
ACCOUNTABILITY
The Community Foundation assures that grants are made
to qualified public charities and that money is used as it
is intended.

Impacting Arts in Adams
Keeping Gettysburg as one of the most famous small towns
in America for cultural activity is the dream of Norm and
Carolyn Nunamaker. Founded in 1997, the Gettysburg
Chamber Orchestra’s mission is to cultivate interest in
music through performances by professional musicians.
The Orchestra engages Adams County musicians and
presents concerts under the auspices of Music Gettysburg,
free of charge so all members of the community are able to
attend concerts.
With the help of a grant of $2,000 from the Community
Foundation, Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra was able to
offer the rare opportunity for those in Adams County to
attend a concert of Gustav Mahler’s “Songs of a Wayfarer”
and his Symphony No. 4. Mahler is noted for his
outstanding orchestrations and both works required 10
additional players to do the works justice. The grant helped
defray some of these extra costs. “Our primary objective is to provide great music
performed in a beautiful venue using many local musicians
as both members and as soloists with the orchestra,”
chimed Norm and Carolyn Nunmaker.
The staff of ADAMS COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION will make it easy to create your charitable fund.
We do all the paperwork and we help you know the decisions you will need to make to guide your fund.
We recommend you consider the following steps:
• Discuss your charitable ideas and goals with your
family, friends, attorney and financial advisor.
• Determine how you might best achieve your
charitable goals and discuss the size and type of
gift that is suited to your resources.
• Contact the Foundation to consider the types of
• Name your fund. A new fund may be created in
your name or a loved one’s name; the fund may
be named to create a lasting memorial to a loved
one; or the fund could be named for a charitable
cause that reflects the fund’s purpose. If you
wish, you, as the donor, may choose to remain
anonymous.

Joseph T. & Iva R. Bollinger Scholarship Award
In 1967, Joseph and Iva Bollinger went to the Littlestown
National Bank and established a charitable trust to
benefit the post-secondary education of the children of
their daughter. After these children had been educated,
the remainder of the Trust would become a perpetual
education trust for a Littlestown Area High School
graduating senior based on financial need and scholarship
ability.
Gettysburg High School (GHS) Class of 1964
Academic Award
The Gettysburg High School Class of 1964 is an active
alumni group that has supported special projects benefitting
their alma mater every reunion year. To celebrate the 50th
Anniversary of their graduation, they decided to create an
academic award that would be presented to a student
who had attended Gettysburg High School for four years,
had a Grade Point Average of 3.5, participated in a
minimum of two school activities per year from grades 9-12
and participated in a minimum of one community service
program per the four years of high school. Classmates
of 1964 feel very strongly that Gettysburg High School
played a strong part in any success they are have
achieved in their lives and wanted to provide the same
opportunity for a young boy or girl a boost toward their
goals in life. In the words of Walt Jones, classmate and
leader of the class, “We all understand and believe it is the
spirit of our class to assist, to help, to contribute to a child’s
dream of self—growth and achievement.”
Walter P. & Anna Griest Memorial Scholarship
Walter Griest and his wife, Anna lived in Ortanna
where they raised their daughter, Jean. When Anna
passed away in 2002, a scholarship fund was set up
at the Bermudian Springs School District in her memory.
Walter passed away in 2007 and the scholarship fund
became the Walter and Anna Griest Scholarship. In
2014, the estate decided to transfer the fund to Adams
County Community Foundation. The fund will distribute a
scholarship to a student from Bermudian Springs graduating
senior with a 3.0 average and attending post-secondary
schooling in agriculture. In the absence of a qualified
candidate from BSSD, the scholarship will be open to
Adams County students who qualify.
ELIZABETH FERCIOT ROBY
ART SCHOLARSHIP
Maybelle Hereter Scholarship Fund
This scholarship will be awarded by the Gettysburg Area
High School to a student for advanced study in music and
music education.
The Nicole L. Laughman Scholarship Fund Nicole L. Laughman was the beloved daughter of Rory
Laughman who established this fund. She attended
Bermudian Springs School District, loved sports, played
basketball and was a Girl Scout. She passed away in
2003 at the age of 13 while on vacation in Hawaii. To
honor his daughter’s memory Mr. Laughman established this
county wide scholarship for a female student athlete, who
demonstrates scholarship, financial need and community
service.
The Julie Ann Lochary Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to girls who participated
in 4-H sometime between kindergarten through 12th grade
and are planning to attend a 2-4 year post-secondary
school, including technical school.
Greg Richardson Athletic Scholarship. This scholarship was established by Greg’s parents, Del
and Tynia Richardson in his memory. See the Featured
Story on page for more information.
.
Elizabeth Ferciot Roby Art Scholarship. See the Featured Story on this page for more information.
Elizabeth “Bettie” Roby was a delightful and caring spirit
who embraced life to its fullest. She found beauty in
everything. She raised three children with her husband
Charlie at their home in Fairfield, putting her love of
painting on hold while her children were young. Bettie
and Charlie moved to Fairfield from Baltimore in the
1970’s, and Bettie was inspired to draw and paint the
beauty she found there. With her children grown, Bettie
pursued her degree and painted, creating beautiful art
and teaching classes at her barn studio in Fairfield. She
favored watercolors and loved to teach, sharing what she
had learned. This scholarship was established by her
daughter, Marcia and her husband, Todd. Her family and
friends hope the scholarship will continue the legacy of a
wonderful artist, generous teacher and beautiful person
who so loved to paint and teach. The scholarship is for a
student or adult pursuing post-secondary education at a
school, college or university in the field of art, preferably
studio art, but other forms of art such as photography,
sculpture, and pottery may be considered. Students from
county-wide school districts, including home schooled are
eligible. No academic or financial need requirement for
this scholarship.
Rotary Club of Littlestown Scholarship
The Rotary Club of Littlestown is a service club that has
provided a scholarship for a student attending Littlestown
Area School District for the past two years. The Rotarians
decided to establish this fund at ACCF in order to assure
that this scholarship continues into the future and to create
an unbiased selection process based on specific criteria.
That criteria includes: Graduating senior attending at least
an accredited 2-year, but preferably 4-year post-secondary
educational program, a student exemplifying the values
of Rotary (Service Above Self or the Four-Way Test, or a
participant of Rotary’s Interact Program), financial need,
good academic performance, community, school and/or
church service.

HART SCHOLARSHIP INSPIRES
Berne C. Hart grew up in Upper Adams where Berne’s
parents lived and worked the family farm. At Biglerville
High School, Berne was a good student, active in sports
and played trumpet in the band. His sister, Dolores,
remembers that he was fun loving, playful and displayed
a great sense of humor which helped him make friends
easily. Berne always talked about making something good
of his life and wanted to go to college to fulfill that dream.
Berne knew, however, that his family did not have the
money to send him to college, so he dropped out of high
school and joined the U. S. Marine Corp. Through the
Marines, he received his high school diploma and went
on to become a Commissioned Officer. After three tours
of duty in Vietnam and 20 years of service, Berne retired
from the Marines. He went to work for Hughes Aircraft
before deciding to pursue a law degree. He had a 20 year
career in aviation law.
His devoted sister, now Dolores (Hart) Druckenmiller,
was so impressed with her brother’s tenacity, his life
of generous and heroic acts and his ability to live his
dreams despite hardship, that she wanted to establish a
scholarship in his memory to inspire and enable young
people from Biglerville High School to pursue their
dreams.
The Berne C. Hart Scholarship provides $5,000 a year for 4
years to a student attending Penn State University. Thanks
to Mrs. Druckenmiller’s generosity, a new student will be
selected each year to receive this award.
Helen and Elton Ruth Scholarship Fund
Helen Ruth was a charitable woman. In 1966, she
lived in New Oxford and made a Will that described a
number of charitable gifts she wanted to make, including
a scholarship fund for a worthy graduate of New Oxford
High School, preferably to those students who go into
library work or music. When Helen passed away in
1976, her estate was distributed to three scholarship funds
for three different schools, to four hospitals including the
Annie Warner Hospital and to two churches and the
Cripple Children’s Society. Clearly Helen Ruth wanted
to make a difference in her community. Now Helen’s
legacy rests in ACCF in perpetuity.
Linda Kranias Fund
An anonymous donor established this fund for a woman
he considered a very special person, Linda Kranias.
Linda was a beloved member of the community. Her
warmth, sincerity and sense of humor touched countless
people’s lives. Linda was known for acts of kindness,
taking care of people in need and often putting others
before herself. Linda battled breast cancer and lost her
life on July 8, 2014. Her memory lives on through this
fund which will provide support for homecare services for
Adams County women with breast cancer and Adams
County seniors who are living in their own homes. The
designated recipient of the earnings of this fund is Cheryl
Kay Foundation, Inc.
Dr. Satish & Rupal Shah Fund
Dr. Shah is an oncologist practicing medicine in Adams
County. He and his wife, Rupal, were very concerned
about the expense that patients incur during cancer
treatment and wanted to alleviate the burden. They
established this fund to support the costs of home care
and transportation for local residents who are being
treated for cancer and are receiving support services from
a non-profit organization. Patients from Adams, York and
Franklin Counties are eligible.

Canner Fund, a component of Adams County Community
Foundation, support students and educational programs
at Upper Adams School District through charitable gifts
made by individuals, businesses and organizations. Made
up of an educational fund and an awards/scholarship
fund, Canner Funds impact education on all levels. The
educational funds support special teacher projects as well
as specific educational programs of the district. Awards
and scholarship funds support post-secondary education
of Biglerville High School students.
Started in 2009 when Mike Pavlovich from the School
Board approached Upper Adams School District
Superintendent Dr. Eric Eshbach, the fund was originally
seeded with gifts from the school’s administrators. When
Dr. Wesley Doll succeeded Eshbach, Doll became the
fund’s champion. Through Dr. Doll’s efforts, donations
grew the fund by 178%. Alumni who gathered to celebrate
the anniversary of their graduation made contributions.
Some came forward and established individual named
funds. Graduating classes contribute to the fund. This
past year, an active Advisory Committee spearheaded the
most successful fund-raising campaign of the 2014 Giving
Spree raising over $10,000 and receiving more than
$2,000 in matching funds from the Foundation. At the
end of 2014, the Canner Funds have almost $600,000.

GRANT RECIPIENT
Impacting Civic Causes
The Adams County SPCA has been serving Adams County
since April 1976. The shelter takes in about 2,000 animals
per year, ranging from domestic pets, small exotics, to
livestock such as horses and pigs. Because of the need for
additional space and to improve the living conditions of
the animals, the SPCA engaged in a capital campaign for
facility improvements.
Adams County Community Foundation awarded
$15,000.00, toward the SPCA’s building campaign to
underwrite cat condos. The condos have been a huge hit
and have proven successful in getting more cats adopted.
Each room houses multiple cats, provides seating and a
homelike environment where prospective adopters can see
cats in a more natural state. There is nothing like watching
cats and kittens play and interact normally. For the first
time, the SPCA had to go to other local animal shelters to
get enough cats to adopt! The board of the SPCA sent its
sincere appreciation to the Adams County Community
Foundation for making the cat adoption program so
successful.

Rob Seidel grew up in Maryland the son of Robert and
Sandra Seidel. He had a close and special relationship
with his younger brother Stephen. As a teenager, Rob
loved country music and spending time with his friends.
He was an altar server for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. In
2000 he graduated from the Catoctin High School where
he played football and baseball. After graduation, Rob had
the honor of accepting an appointment to the U. S. Military
Academy at West Point.
In 2006, two years after graduating from The Academy,
Rob was killed in Bagdad, Iraq, serving his country as a
rifle platoon leader in Company B, 2nd Battalion the 22nd
Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division out of
Fort Drum, NY.
To honor his brother, Stephen Seidel began a golf
tournament that would raise funds for wounded soldiers
returning to the United States after being deployed in the
War Against Terror. Netting some $35,000 each year, the
Seidel’s established a charitable fund that contributes to
Gold Star Mothers, Keystone Wounded Warriors, and the
Yellow Ribbon Fund. These programs are committed to
supporting soldiers wounded and returning home and
their families to offer assistance to reintegrate into family
life and society in general.
The 2015 Seidel Golf Tournament will be held at The Links
in Gettysburg on Friday, September 11.

The U.S. Private sector economy is strengthening and
corporate and consumer balance sheets remain healthy,
along with inflation being low. Across the globe economies
are generally slowing across the board and that puts central
banks at odds with our Federal Reserve Board. Political
rifts within Europe are beginning to come to the forefront
again and the vicious decline in oil prices could stoke
geopolitical instability. Stock valuations are reasonable but
2015 should provide added volatility in the capital markets
as the crosscurrents of interest rate directionality and
world economy growth potentially clash.
The Adams County Community Foundation Investment
account, a healthy mix of both domestic and international
stocks and bonds was up 6.39% in 2014. With the U.S.
Dollar gaining ground against other currencies, we are
maintaining our under weighting of overseas investments
and watching very carefully how this will affect large
multinational Fortune 500 companies with vast exposure
to international markets.
