I have a dream to showcase to the world that
South Africa has got what it takes...
Who were the Coco Chanels, the Estée Lauder’s, Helena Rubenstein’s of this world?
They were women just like me with an unrelenting determination to make a difference…
I write to you today as a friend, fellow woman, daughter, mother and businesswoman.
I have realised we as women are lost, confused and forever searching for hope in a jar.
Throughout my life I have always been captivated by the essence of beauty. My parents
imprinted a love for nature and beautiful things in me. They also instilled in me the
importance of treasuring precious moments. My mom would often light a candle in
the morning for breakfast or put a few fresh flowers in my room and my dad would get
really excited when he captured a moment in time with a unique photograph.
After school I decided to focus my studies on Creative Design and found an undiscovered
passion for fine art and the history behind it.
Destiny played an important role in my life and so I started working at a well-known insurance
company in South Africa in the Customer Care Division. I soon took on responsibilities outside my
regular duties. My enthusiasm and the fact that I always wanted to do and learn more, resulted
in me being promoted in a reasonably short time to Manager and later General Manager.
But my passion for beauty and my dream to make a difference to women from all walks of
life was undeniable…and so a new chapter started in my life.
I met Maria on a warm February morning in 2008. My purpose: to find a new supplier that
could provide quality gifts for our beloved insurance clients. Upon my first meeting with
Maria Garcia, she repeatedly mentioned that I looked like a famous Italian actress,
Isabella Rossilini and hence asked me if I would become the face of her cosmetic brand.
At first I had to decline due to my professional career, but ended up spending so many
hours with her as she produced these exclusive products for us. I became an ‘adopted
child’ to Maria - talking, asking questions and enquiring about everything from her life story
to skincare secrets and her skincare range.
Maria’s journey had not always been an easy one and as an adult she had her share of
turmoil. She was a single mom who, out of desperation, started working in a chain store at
a cosmetic counter. She was fortunate however, to have worked for well-known beauty
houses such as Estée Lauder, Dr. Payot, Redken and Jean Gatineau where she was soon
noticed. As she became more involved in the beauty industry, gaining knowledge and
experience, she developed an unexplainable sixth sense and an undeniable passion.
She introduced me to more and more of her products with an unrelenting excitement and
before long I realised that I had no option but to focus her talent into a light that would shine
through anyone that is touched by Isabella Garcia.
Step by step I started performing small tests and found that the simplicity of the program
perfectly suited the harsh South African climate and offered new hope and amazingly
soft skin to people around the country, including myself.
Eventually I became the face of Maria Garcia and our first photo shoot happened in
October 2008. What an exciting day!
After overcoming many challenges and disappointments, Maria and I made a pact…
I promised to follow her dream, to turn it into a reality, to never compromise on quality and
to make sure that I am worthy of the people that I serve and so Isabella Garcia was born.

to maintain the
ph balance of your
skin.
With ageing, however, the sebum production of the skin declines. This causes the
skin’s pH to become more and more neutral, and thus more susceptible to
bacterial growth. This reduced acidity dramatically affects the protective ability of
the acid mantle, which leads to dryness and an exaggeration of the appearance
of fine lines and wrinkles. As the skin becomes less elastic, it also becomes drier;
the underlying fatty tissue begins to disappear resulting in the skin beginning to
sag. Our skin is less supple, and wrinkles begin to form. At this stage, our skin is more
easily injured, heals more slowly and tends to dry out more quickly.
The first line of defence.
What is the connection between the skin’s pH and acne?
Our skin is our body’s first line of defence against
all elements, including micro-organisms, the wind
and pollution. The outer surface of the skin is
known as the acid mantle. This mantle is a thin layer on the very outside of our skin
and has a slightly acidic pH.
It is vitally important for the skin to maintain a slightly acidic pH of around 5.5. When
the pH value of our skin rises above this number, the skin’s surface becomes more
alkaline. As soon as the skin loses its acidity, it also loses its capability to fight off
micro-organisms and consequently creates conditions that bacteria flourish in.
The acid mantle is important for maintaining the overall health of our skin and also
protects it. Due to its slightly acidic pH, the acid mantle is able to defend and
support the skin. It helps with the continuous renewal and maturation of the
epidermis. It also provides protection against bacteria and fungus and it shelters
the skin against alkaline substances.
What is pH exactly?
pH is basically a measuring system for comparing the strength of acids and
alkalines. A scale of 1 to 14 was created to measure these levels. Water is usually
neutral, meaning it is neither acidic nor alkaline, and is assigned to midway on the
scale: 7. Anything below 7 is classified as an acid and anything above 7 is
categorised as alkaline.
Why is the pH of your skin important?
The pH of normal, healthy human skin is estimated to be between 4.5 and 6 (acidic).
However, this varies with age. Typically, newborns have a pH closer to neutral (pH
7) that turns more acidic with time. In the late teens to early 20’s, our acid mantle is
well developed and provides good protection against potentially harmful, external
environmental factors. During this time, our skin usually looks healthy, heals quickly
when injured and seems to take care of itself. This is also the time at which the pH
of our skin is at the optimal 4.6 - 6.
How does my skincare routine affect my skin’s pH?
Washing your skin with moderately or highly alkaline soaps is one of the major
culprits that affect the Acid Mantle of your skin. Ordinary, commercially available
soaps are highly alkaline (pH range 9-11) and raise the skin’s pH into alkaline levels.
This causes the skin to lose many of its protective capabilities and also causes the
skin to dry out.
The simplest way to restore and maintain your skin’s pH is to neutralise alkaline
bases with an acid. This means that you should ensure that the skincare products
you use have a pH of between 5 and 7. This is what is generally meant with
so-called pH balanced products. Products such as these will neutralise any
alkalinity and maintain a more acidic pH for your skin.
Cleansers that are pH balanced restore the necessary pH of the skin, and helps
keep the skin healthy, elastic and bacteria free. Rehydration of the skin with a
moisturising cream is also helpful; as it combines with the cleanser to help neutralise
alkalinity.
Even minor differences in the pH of your skincare products can have an important
effect on the appearance of your skin. Rather avoid products with high pH levels
and instead focus on products with low pH levels, which will assist your skin in
maintaining its acid mantle keeping your skin healthy, elastic and firm.
