OPENING SERIES A SWEEPING SUCCESS--Kansas City hits the road for the first time in 2015
fresh off a 3-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox in Kauffman Stadium, capped by a 4-1 matinee
triumph yesterday...Edinson Volquez made a tremendous first impression in his KC debut, working 8.0
innings allowing just a run on four hits with a walk, hit batter and five strikeouts...Greg Holland did what
Greg Holland has done for over two years, working a perfect 1-2-3 ninth for his second save of the young
season...yesterday’s win was newsworthy in that Kansas City entered the day 0-7 all-time vs. ChiSox
southpaw John Danks, but the Royals plated four to hand him a loss for the first time vs. the Royals...
Alcides Escobar opened the game with a double to extend his two-season hitting streak to a dozen games
and scored the game’s first run...KC scored three more in the sixth, with Salvador Perez clubbing a 2-run
homer to end the scoring.
BIG FLIES CONTINUE--The 2015 Royals hammered a handful of home runs in their first 3-game
series of the year, a figure the club didn’t attain in 2014 until the 15th game of the year...the last time
Kansas City hit five homers in its first three games was in 1983.
A 3-0 START--Kansas City is off to its first 3-0 start since the 2008 season when the Royals opened with a 3-game sweep of the Tigers in Comerica Park...the sweep
of the White Sox marked the first time KC has won its first three at home since the 2003 season.
PAULO DEBUTS WITH A KNOCK--Paulo Orlando had a stellar Major League debut yesterday, walking in his first big league plate appearance and then tripling
in his first official at bat while playing outstanding defensively in leftfield...after nine years of minor league baseball, Paulo became the third native of Brazil to
appear in a Major League game joining Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes and former White Sox hurler Andre Rienzo...the triple by Orlando marked the 12th time an
Kansas City player debuted with a 3-base hit as their first knock, the most recent Christian Colon last year in Minnesota...he was also the fifth Royal to triple in his
big league debut joining Irving Falum, Johnny Damon, Edgar Caceres and Brian McRae.
A BATTLE OF PENS AND LEATHER--This weekend series in Anaheim features two of several clubs who have yet to give up a run out of the bullpen or commit
an error defensively...the Kansas City bullpen, which carried the torch during the 2014 postseason, is off to an 8.0-inning streak of scoreless work with yesterday,
it’s least called upon affair in the early going, with Greg Holland cleaning things up with a perfect ninth for his second rescue...the defense is one of nine clubs,
including the Angels, to play flawlessly through its first series of the year.
COMEBACK COMPLETE--Ryan Madson worked the ninth inning on Monday to cap a 3-year comeback to the Majors with his first outing in “The Show” since
September 28, 2011 with the Phillies...Madson underwent “Tommy John” surgery after signing with Cincinnati in 2012, was then signed in 2013 by the Angels, but
his only appearance one minor league outing...he was out of the game last year and then Monday was the first of his 492 big league outings that was not as a Phillie.
NETWORK TELEVISION TOMORROW--The middle game of this series will not be on FSKC, but will be a national telecast on Fox Sports 1...Kenny Albert and
Eric Karros will be on the call, while Jon Paul Morosi serves as the field analyst...this is the first of six FS 1 games for Kansas City this year.

November 22, 2013.

(August 2), he recorded his sixth career shutout and 11th complete game, blanking the 2015 Spring Totals 1-27.89 21.22921
A’s on three hits, 3-0, August 13 at Kauffman Stadium.
SPRING STATS--Vargy struggled to find consistent success in the thin Arizona air, allowing 7 home runs in his 5 Cactus League starts...however, he was
superb in KC’s final exhibition game, last Saturday in Houston, tossing 4.0 hitless innings with a walk and 3 strikeouts...overall, he collected 19 K’s in 21.2 innings.
VS. THE HALOS--Jason is making his 15th start and 16th overall appearance against the Angels, entering at 5-4 with a 3.02 ERA (32 ER in 95.1 IP)...the
former Angel made two starts against his ex-mates last season, allowing 7 earned runs in 10.1 innings (6.10 ERA) and did not factor in either decision...he also had
a no-decision here in Game #1 of the American League Division Series, allowing 2 solo home runs in 6.0 innings of work in a game KC won, 3-2 in 11 innings.
GO WEST, YOUNG MAN--Coming to the Royals after five years in the A.L. West, Vargas was stingy to his former division rivals last season, posting
a 2.60 ERA (15 ER in 52.0) and a 3-3 record in eight starts...his ERA was fourth-lowest against the Western Division among hurlers that made at least eight
starts, behind only Felix Hernandez (1.71), Jon Lester (2.06) and James Paxton (2.13).
AT HOME ON THE ROAD--Jason takes the mound in a familiar place, making his 20th career start at Angel Stadium and 21st appearance...he’s 9-3 with
a 2.86 ERA (41 ER in 129.0 IP) here, holding the opposition to a .244 average...he was also strong away from Kauffman Stadium in 2014, going 5-4 with a
2.73 ERA (26 ER in 85.2 IP), ranking seventh in the league in road ERA...historically, the road hasn’t been
Vargas vs. Angels
as kind to Vargy as he’s 25-37 with a 4.80 ERA in his 103 outings (92 starts) away from home.

This & That
THIEVES AT IT AGAIN--The 2014 Major League leaders in stolen bases aren’t wasting any time continuing their trend as the Royals pilfered six bags in the
season-opening 3-game series with the White Sox...KC is currently second to Cincinnati’s seven thefts through the first series of the year...the Royals swiped a big
leagues best 153 bags last year, including five in the first three games (six in four games).
NEXT STOP, MINNESOTA--The first trip of 2015 will conclude with a 3-game stop in Minneapolis starting at 3:10 p.m. on Monday...it will be the third time
the Royals will be introduced on the lines, with tonight serving as the Angels’ home opener and then the Twins starting their Target Field portion of the season
on Monday...should Mother Nature not intervene on Monday, the Royals and Twins will have Tuesday off before resuming the series Wednesday night and
completing it on Thursday afternoon...Kansas City went 11-8 vs. Minnesota last year, including a 5-5 split in Target Field...the Royals trail the all-time series by
a 341-373 mark, including a 159-197 deficit in the Twin Cities, 22-25 since the move to Target Field.
HOME NEXT FRIDAY--Billy Butler and the Oakland A’s will open KC’s second stay at “The K” a week from tonight, with last year’s Wild Card opponent in
town for three, followed by Minnesota for three...the Royals will welcome their former designated hitter back with a brief pre-game ceremony so he can receive
his 2014 American League Championship ring.
NED CLOSING IN--The 16th full-time manager in franchise history, Ned Yost, is already the franchise leader in games managed with 778, but is now just 34
victories shy of tying Whitey Herzog as the winningest skipper in team annals...Yost enters tonight 28 wins shy of second place Dick Howser...Yost is currently
third behind only Herzog (410) and Howser (404)...he was named to his post on May 13, 2010 and has a 376-402 ledger since taking the reins...this is his second
stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew

12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox’s big league staff (1991-2002).
ROYALS ABOVE THE FOREIGN BORN AVERAGE--Major League Baseball announced that 26.5% of the players on Opening Day rosters were born outside
the United States, totaling 230 of the 750 active 25-man roster players and 118 disabled or restricted players...Kansas City has 10 of those athletes for 36% of
the roster and DL’s coming from foreign soil...included in the 10 is newcomer Paulo Orlando, just the third native of Brazil to ever make a big league roster
(Yan Gomes and Andre Rienzo)...the Royals also have Kendrys Morales (Cuba), Kelvin Herrera, Yordano Ventura and Edinson Volquez (Dominican Republic),
Christian Colon (Puerto Rico) and Alcides Escobar, Omar Infante, Franklin Morales and Salvador Perez (Venezuela).

during his Royals career (1995-2007), Sweeney holds the single-season club record with 144 RBI in 2000 and the second-best batting average at .340 in 2002...
he ranks in the top six all-time in Royals history in 17 offensive categories, including second in average (.299) and home runs (197)...Sweeney was a 3-time Les
Milgram Royals Player of the Year (2000, 2002 and 2005) and 1999 Joe Burke Special Achievement Award winner.

have the longest current Opening Day lineup streak with today their fifth straight and the eighth in the last nine years for Gordon.
GOLD AWARDED DURING NEXT STAY--For the second straight season the Royals had three players earn Rawlings Gold Gloves for their defensive prowess...
Alex Gordon latched onto his fourth in as many years as a leftfielder, while catcher Salvador Perez and first baseman Eric Hosmer each brought home the gold for
a second consecutive season...Gordon was also named Rawlings’ Platinum Glove winner, emblematic of the best defensive player in the American League...each
player will officially be recognized for their achievements when Kansas City opens its next homestand on Friday, April 17 prior the game with the A’s.
SPRING WORK--The Royals finished the spring season with a 20-10-1 ledger capped by a 2-game weekend sweep of the Houston Astros in Minute Maid Park...
the 20 victories were an 8-win improvement over last year...this past spring was one of streaks in the won/loss column, with KC opening camp with six straight
victories and a 10-1 overall start, followed by a 3-8 slide before closing with a 7-1-1 mark.
2015 INTERLEAGUE PLAY--Kansas City’s action against the National League this year will concentrate on the Central Division, with the Reds, Cardinals,
Brewers and Pirates visiting Kauffman Stadium this summer, while the Royals travel to Cincinnati, St. Louis and Chicago, facing the Cubs in Wrigley Field for
the first time since 2001...the first N.L. action won’t be until a 2-game series here on May 19-20 when Cincinnati pays the Royals a visit...Kansas City will be well
represented in Cincinnati earlier than its scheduled visit in mid-August, as the Reds are hosting the 2015 All-Star Game of which manager Ned Yost and his staff
