Tauranga Writers’ 2015 NZ Secondary School (free) annual writing competition
Conditions of Writing Competition

Create an original piece of writing (short story or poem) using the following phrase as the theme, title,
or as a line anywhere in the piece of writing: ‘The Earth we knew’.
Your piece of writing, including the title, must be no more than 1200 words for prose and 300 words for poetry.
Your piece must be written as science fiction, but may also include elements of the supernatural, or
mystery.
Entry is free. You may enter as many times as you like. All entries must be received by 12 am (midnight)

on Friday 31 July 2015.
To be eligible for this competition all participants must be currently enrolled in a yr9 – yr13 New Zealand
secondary school or NZ correspondence school.
In addition, the piece of writing must:
 be an original piece of writing by the participant and not published anywhere else

 be received by midnight on Friday 31 July 2015
 be typed using Arial font, size 11 point
 be formatted with 1.5 line spacing and paragraphed
 be written in English as the main language
 be accurate for spelling, punctuation and grammar
 include your full name, school, year level and title of piece and your home email at the top left hand corner of
your first page.
Please save your piece of writing as a .doc or .docx file, and email it as an attachment to [email protected].
Put your full name, name of school and year level in the subject line of your email.

Judging

The judges will be members of Tauranga Writers. Their names will be announced on the Tauranga Writers
website (http://www.taurangawriters.org.nz/) a minimum of two weeks before competition entry closes.

All judges’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Winners will be notified by email.
Publication
*
An anthology of the best writing will be published as both print and e-book versions, to be launched at a public
event TBC. Entry into the competition is considered as permission from the author for their piece of writing to be
included in this anthology.

Work selected for the anthology will be edited, in conjunction with students, prior to publication.

All editors’ decisions are final.

Copyright remains with the individual authors.

Winning participants will receive:
- critical feedback (mentoring) by the judge of their section on a further piece of writing
- a selection of books Phantom Paragrapher (http://thephantomparagrapher.blogspot.co.nz/)
- a book token supplied by the Bookrapt (http://www.bookrapt.org.nz/).
