Welcome
Sue Mercer
It goes without saying: the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region is one of the most beautiful areas in the
Northeast. This region is a year-round vacation destination for those who enjoy fishing, hunting,
camping, golfing, bicycling, boating, skiing, shopping and dining. If you like touring museums,
attending theatrical shows, exploring art galleries and visiting historical sites, we have it all.
Come stay for a day or vacation by the week or season—you’ll find a variety of accommodations including bed and breakfasts, inns, cabins, campgrounds, cottages, motels and resorts to
meet your needs and budget. The opportunities are endless.
Even though the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce serves thirteen towns–
Bridgton, Brownfield, Casco, Denmark, Fryeburg, Harrison, Lovell, Naples, Raymond, Sebago,
Stow, Sweden and Waterford--we have welcomed members from many other towns such as
Oxford, Auburn and Portland, Maine, plus Berlin and North Conway, NH.
The hustle and bustle of this growing region brings repeat visitors, their families and friends to
experience our pristine waterways, warm sunny days and soft summertime breezes, beautiful fall
foliage and a winter wonderland ideal for snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skiing and ice fishing.
We guarantee that your first visit here will not be your last. Many visitors return to become fulltime residents who will extend a warm handshake, welcome you to their new HOME and ask,
“How may we help you?” Locals will be happy to tell you all you want to know about the area.
We sincerely hope you will visit us soon. If we can be of any assistance, please let us know.
Sincerely,
Sue Mercer

Searching For Lost Treasure
Whether you are passionate about antiques or just
casually interested, the
Lakes Region is a gold
mine for finding treasures
and collectibles in its
many antique shops.
Two of those are operated
by and benefit Harvest Hills
Animal Shelter. The original
Harry Barker’s Emporium
Antique Group Shop is located on Main Street next to
Bridgton Books and Harry
Barker’s II is located in the
barn at the William Perry
House on Main Hill. Between
them, more than thirty vendors sell antique and vintage
furniture, fishing lures and
flies, jewelry, silver, kitchenware, paintings, books, cottage
items, tins, tools and many
handmade things. Of course,
the merchandise always
changes, so it is worth it to
keep stopping in to see what is
new in both of these shops.
Well-cared for oak and cherry
furniture, especially drop-leaf
tables, are quite popular, says
Lynne Fracassi, manager of the
stores. Besides collectors and
antique lovers seeking treasures, equally popular is the
trend of repurposing furniture
or other items into new uses
such as old frames into mirrors. The possibilities are only
limited by imagination. Birdhouses made from old barn
boards are a big seller. Right
now vintage items from the
mid-50s to the 80s come and
go quickly. Often people find
and fall in love with things
that they had as a child or that
they remember their parents
and grandparents owning.
Fracassi also sees a lot of collectors come through, looking
for “their thing.” For some
people, it is cookie or tobacco
tins with graphics from the
mid-century. Others look
for ice buckets, pots with red
handles and little tables. At
both shops, they also sell some
architectural pieces made with
iron and wood.

dogs and cats at Harvest Hills
Animal Shelter in Fryeburg.

The Cultural Scene
If you find yourself near the
western edge of the region,
whether in Brownfield,
Fryeburg, or even Stow, make
your way over to the Stone
Mountain Arts Center for
performances ranging in style
“from folk, Celtic, blues,
cajun, opera, comedy and
classical.” No shortage of great
acts have passed through this
venue, including Lucinda
Williams, Bela Fleck and
Livingston Taylor, and—by
virtue of its rural and idyllic
setting—you are bound to
enjoy an exceptional evening
with the performer of your
choice. FMI: stonemountainartscenter.com
Just east, in Denmark’s
picturesque main village,
you’ll find the Denmark Arts
Center, based in the impressive Odd Fellows Hall, which

In Bridgton, you’ll find a
number of enticing artistic
venues, from the Magic
Lantern Theater which, from
time to time, shows independent and locally-made films,
to Water’s Edge Gallery and

artisanal jewelry and silversmithing products, to Art in

Fine art and cultural vibrancy
have both gravitated toward
and endured within the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region for
many decades, due in part to
the ubiquitous serenity of the
area, in part to the many great
minds that have heeded the
inspirational capacity inherent
to such a place, and finally the
inclination of the community
to embrace any number of
creative endeavors.
Dillon hired architect Harrison Wiseman to construct a
woodland theatre equivalent
to the opera houses of New
York, this cultural landmark
has changed hands a number
of times and served many
artistic endeavors. Even so,
it’s just this--administrative
diversity--that has continued
to supplement the innovative
character of this place as well
as reaffirm its essential place
in this community. Change, it
would appear, constitutes the
vitality of Deertrees.
From Dillon, to Emerson
College, to the Town of
Harrison, and finally to the
non-profit Deertrees Founda-

tion, the theatre has fallen
to the stewardship of over a
dozen different individuals,
always rising above its past
accomplishments and, in
spite of any setbacks, striving
to create a new identity that
thrives in the present. And
Deertrees’ current Artistic and
Executive Director Andrew
Harris hopes to make just this
happen: “Over the next few
years,” he says, “I’m hoping
we are able to improve the
grounds so the historic property is a draw for people and
the cafe will be better stocked
so that it may draw people in
its own right to have lunch
and enjoy picnics.” Harris
also adds that “the gallery
15
will have changing exhibits
throughout the summer” and
“there is opportunity for the
public to hire the grounds
and building for reunions and
weddings.” In other words,
Harris intends to expand the
Deertrees experience from
simply a performance venue
to a full-fledged cultural
rendezvous, one where people
can congregate to enjoy excellent art in conjunction with
the outdoors, local cuisine,
and historical craftsmanship.
That said, Harris also wants
his visitors to fall in love with
the flavor of what this place
always was: “a beautiful theater with perfect acoustics.”
As changes make themselves
apparent, so too will the
many fine performances that
take the stage during the
2015 season. This will include
groups such as the Deertrees
New Repertory Company,
the Segabo-Long Lake Music Festival, and the New
Bridgton Chorus Society, as
well as three different plays
with performances peppered
throughout the season. All
family suitable but nonetheless provocative, the upcoming season is one to look
forward to and seek out, for
visitors and locals alike.
Birding in the Lakes Region
“That night it was still,
and in the moonlight the
loons began as I had heard
them before, first the wild,
excited calling of a group
of birds, dashing across the
water, then the answers
from other groups until
the entire expanse of lake
was full of their music. We
sat around until long after
dark and listened.”
—Sigurd F. Olson
Seeing loons (Gavia immer) on the water or hearing
their haunting calls instills a
memory you’ll hold for a lifetime. Watching the majestic
birds swim and fish thrills
visitors and residents alike.
Loons return to the Greater
Bridgton Lakes Region about
the time the ice goes out in
the spring. Common loon
pairs nest and raise their
young chicks on many of our
clean, clear lakes so the chance
of seeing one is excellent.
A few tips for seeing and
protecting loons:

While loons may be the
iconic bird of the region,
there are many other species
to watch for and it changes
every season, says Jean Preis,
an avid birder who has written a column on birdwatching
for The Bridgton News for
almost two decades. “Maine
is one of the hottest states to
bird in, especially along the
coast. But this area is a hidden
gem,” says Preis.
One of her favorite destinations for birdwatching is
the Major Gregory Sanborn
Wildlife Management Area,
previously known as Brownfield Bog. “The Brownfield
Bog in May provides worldclass birding as the warblers,
in fresh colorful plumage,
pass through,” she says.
“They’re migrating through
and some come here to breed.
The males, especially those
that are breeding here, sing.”

preserve is listed in the Maine
Birding Trail brochure: “It is
the most reliable location to
find Yellow-throated vireos
and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers.
Yellow-billed and Black-billed
Cuckoos are also present.
The entrance is located on
Lord’s Hill Road in Brownfield.
The Maine Birding Trail also
lists the Heald and Bradley
Ponds Reserve and Sucker
Brook Outlet Reserve, both
properties of the Greater Lovell
Land Trust. From April to July,
birders are apt to spot common
warblers, woodpeckers and
flycatchers. FMI: www.gllt.org
In the fall, Preis often views
hawks from the ledges on
Pleasant Mountain. “The
hawks follow the ridges on
the updrafts and thermals.”
Other sites to see the fall
hawk migration include
Hacker’s Hill in Casco and
the summit of Bald Pate

Mountain in South Bridgton, both properties of Loon
Echo Land Trust. FMI: www.
loonecholandtrust.org
Come winter, the fields of
North Fryeburg are superb
birding spots, especially after
a heavy rain, Preis says. She’s
seen snow buntings and
sometimes owls along the
windbreaks at the back of
farms. The open water by the
Naples causeway is another
prime birding spot. And the
person with the eagle eye
just might see a bald eagle
roosting on the top of a tall
pine. They’ve frequently been
spotted on the Moose Pond
causeway in Bridgton.

Seasons in the Lakes Region
In the Greater Bridgton area,
there are many places to stay
and things to do in every season. During spring, summer,
fall and winter, a weekend in
the Lakes Region will be funfilled whether the sun shines
or the snow flies.
Spring
When the flowers bloom, consider staying at the Waterford Inne, a secluded
abode where “an air of quiet, simple
elegance pervades the rooms.” This inn
offers a revolving menu of “country chic
cuisine,” its suites provide guests with
countryside views, and the surrounding
town is rich with history.

vegetable garden that is sure to be taking
root during your stay, and access to the
innkeeper’s studio where you can peruse
locally-inspired art. Down the road from
Lamb’s Mill, you’ll find Secret Acres Stables, a twenty-horse equine facility where
trail riding and lessons are available.
Or take a short walk into town and
choose from one of several ice cream
stands. Drop a line in the Muddy River
and try your hand at some wild brook
trout. And for those who want to get wet
and perhaps muddy in true springtime
fashion, ask about the Lakes Environmental Association’s Big Night Celebration. On a rainy spring night, join an
ever-growing group of “crossing guards”
as they usher frogs, toads and salamanders from one side to the other and have
an altogether good time.
Summer
Venture west toward Stow and behold
the magnificence of the White Mountains as their many slopes burst to life in
celebration of springtime. Heading south,
Mountain for a number of moderate to
advanced hiking trails, mountain biking
opportunities and stunning views. Likewise, Moose Pond is just down the road
and features a convenient boat ramp to
launch your kayak, canoe or motorboat;
upon these vast waters, behold a panoramic view of the mountain or explore
its farthest reaches, totaling 11 miles
from end to end.
Summertime in Bridgton and the surrounding towns is nothing short of
quintessential. Book a room at The
Pleasant Mountain Inn or The Landmark Inn, both located on North High
Street in Bridgton. Drive to Pleasant
Drive in the opposite direction and you’ll
arrive in downtown Bridgton, a village
that offers anything you could hope to
find: a public beach at Highland Lake; a
variety of antique shops including Harry
Barker Emporium and J Decor; a number of fine restaurants, eateries and bars,
the Saturday morning Farmers’ Market,
beautiful Pondicherry Park and plenty
more. Play golf at Bridgton Highlands
Country Club and then take in a movie
at the Magic Lantern Movie Theater.
Other exciting events include the
Maine Blues Festival every Father’s Day
weekend, the Depot Street Village Folk
Festival in Bridgton, and the various July
4th celebrations throughout the region.

Seasons in the Lakes Region
For a more rustic stay, pitch your tent at
any one of several campgrounds in the
Lakes Region, including Lakeside Pines
Campground in Bridgton and Colonial
Mast Campground in Naples. While you’re
deep in this rustic setting, treat yourself to
the unparalleled splendor of Kezar Falls, a
hidden gorge complete with waterfall and
swimming pool tucked into the backwoods
of Lovell; though it’s a steep descent to the
water’s edge, the enchanting nature of this
place will leave you reeling in summertime
reverie.
England hospitality have established
The Oxford House Inn as a dining and
lodging destination. Characteristic of the
season is the celebrated Fryeburg Fair,
which occurs each year in early October.
This agricultural fair offers just about everything: pig scrambles; ox & horse pulling contests; skillet throws, flower shows;
harness racing; Woodsmen’s Day; musical
performances; an extensive midway; livestock shows; and much more.
Those who prefer to be more central
within the region, book a room at The
Landmark Inn or The Noble House Inn,
both walking distance from downtown
where you can watch football games on
the big screen at The Magic Lantern Theatre & Pub, pick up some hot apple cider
or homemade cocoa from Beth’s Kitchen,
or browse the superb selection of literature and novelties at Bridgton Books.
For many, hunting is a way to get outdoors. Once you’ve obtained the necessary license for hunting game in Maine,
visit either Rocky Ridge Guide Service in
Lovell or Northeast Pheasant Masters in
Bridgton for commercial shooting areas,
equipment, and perhaps the inside scoop
on where the best Greater Bridgton hunting takes place.
Fall
If you plan to visit during the gorgeous
months of autumn, The Oxford House
Inn & Restaurant offers visitors to Maine’s
Western Lakes Region and the Mt. Washington Valley four beautifully appointed
guest rooms, a fifty-seat gourmet restaurant, and Jonathan’s, a granite-walled pub.

England style: attend the annual Maine

equipment in all sizes and trek into the
surrounding woodlands on a trail system
that totals nearly 17 miles, though
whether you stick to the groomed trails
is up to you--some of the more intrepid
visitors are known to make a “twenty

view of the nearby lakes and the White

Rufus Porter Museum - Rufus Porter
(1792-1884) was a noted artist, musician, inventor, poet, teacher and the
founder of Scientific American in 1845.
He made enduring contributions to
the culture of Maine, New England,
and the United States through his
unique Yankee Ingenuity, as evidenced
in his miniature portraits, famous
wall murals, writings, and inventions.
Beyond this, however, Rufus Porter
shared what he did and learned with
others so they could benefit from his
experiences, a quality the Rufus Porter
Museum continues today through its
exhibits and programs about him and
his achievements. Please visit us at

Rufus Porter: The Man Painted
Like many Mainers today,
Porter (1792-1884) had
multiple talents and multiple
jobs. Although he died before
the term “Renaissance man”
came into use, it describes
Rufus Porter perfectly.
He is perhaps best known for
the wall murals he painted
in homes up and down the
East Coast. The murals depict
the farmland around Bridgton and seaport scenes from
Portland.
Porter had many other
talents, says Samantha Scarf,
Associate Director of the museum. “He founded and wrote
Scientific American magazine.
He tried to develop an airship
that would take people from
the East Coast to California
in three days. He also wrote
a book called Curious Arts,
taught dance, played the fiddle, served in the military in
the War of 1812 and painted
miniature portraits.” One of the amazing inventions Porter designed, Scarf
says, is a revolving rifle. Porter
designed the gun prior to
Samuel Colt’s patent. Colt
bought Porter’s design in
GPS$PMUUIFOQBUented it and the rest is history. Rufus Porter Museum mural
The Rufus Porter Museum in
Bridgton displays the largest
collection of the 19th-century
artist’s works in the world.
The museum, now in its tenth
year, celebrates these masterpieces in American folk art
and also the many other enterprises the artist dabbled in.
Visitors to the museum may
view miniature portraits,
copies of Scientific American
and artworks from other
prominent Bridgton folk
artists, including Jonathan
Poor, Porter’s nephew and
apprentice.
Each year, the Rufus Porter
Museum holds a special exhibit, in addition to the regular collection. In 2015, the
museum will feature exhibits
centered around a common
theme: Yankee Ingenuity.
The museum will hold events
through the season that will
reflect the theme as well. Also,
the Rufus Porter Museum is
working in partnership with
11 other Maine museums
(including the Bridgton Historical Society) to create the
Yankee Ingenuity Trail for the
2015 season.
For its first ten years, the Rufus Porter collection has been
MPDBUFEBU/PSUI)JHI
Street, but the non-profit organization recently purchased
the 1842 Webb House at 121
Main Street. Efforts are underway to refurbish the home
and move the museum to this
downtown location, which is
on the National Register of
Historic Places. Besides the murals and special
exhibits, summer interns plan
programs on different topics
related to Porter’s history and
life during the 1800s. The museum is open Wednesday-Saturday, noon to 4 pm.

Denmark
Bicentennial Park: Located
at the southern tip of Moose
Pond and the center of
Denmark’s charming village, Bicentennial Park is a
lovely place to eat your lunch
beneath the gazebo, listen to
the roar of the water flowing
over Moose Pond Dam and
toss the frisbee or the football
on the grassy knoll that comprises the area. You’ll find
the Denmark Arts Center
right across the street as well
as a number of events in the
park all through the summer
season.
Fryeburg
Hemlock Bridge: If you’re
just passing through, try
Bradley Park right in the
downtown area. But if you’re
up for a short drive or bike
ride into the woods, past
sprawling corn fields, along a
lazy river, to a small piece of
New England quintessence,
try the Hemlock Covered
Bridge. Dating from the
1850s, the bridge offers a
vivid glimpse into the craftsmanship of the past while
the surrounding area exudes
tranquility. Though you’ll
have to bring your own chair
or blanket, the ambience here
certainly exceeds any lack of
amenities.
Harrison
Crystal Lake Park: Just beyond the Harrison downtown
on Route 117, Crystal Lake
lives up to its name—translucent waters, impeccable visibility of the surrounding area
and easy access from all parts
of the Lakes Region. The park
offers picnic and cookout
amenities, plenty of green
space for games and activities, a ballfield and basketball
court, beach for swimming
and a playground for the little
ones.
Lovell
The Narrows: A few miles
outside of the small Lovell
village you’ll find the scenic
“Narrows,” a short causeway
that bisects the area’s major
body of water, Kezar Lake.
Sebago Lake State Park:
Located on the north shore
of Maine’s second largest
lake, Sebago Lake State Park
offers just about everything
you’d want from a relaxing
day outdoors: lake swimming, sandy beaches, picnic
areas, volleyball nets and
horseshoe pits, playgrounds,
boat launches and stunning
views. While you may not be
the only visitor to the park,
its popularity speaks to the
pleasures inherent to this
great body of water.
