Request for Proposals (RFP)
Downtown Historic District Crosswalk Project
Application Deadline: March 16th, 2015
OVERVIEW
Main Street Fairmont is seeking individual artists and/or artist teams to assist with the
replacement of old crosswalks within the downtown historic district with something distinctive and
artist designed that will be compliant with traffic and safety regulations. The project goal is to
improve the pedestrian experience and contribute to the growing arts movement
happening in downtown Fairmont.
SITE DESCRIPTION
The Crosswalk Project features eight
intersections within the historic
downtown district:

Design/Project
Parameters
A: Standard Ladder Designs
•
Crosswalk designs should use the standard ladder crosswalk
(Image A) or the standard intricate crosswalk (Image B) as a
jumping off point.
•
Artists will use Pro-Park Waterborne Paints; available colors
white, yellow, red, blue, and black
•
Approximate Crosswalk Dimensions:
Crosswalks should be at least as wide as the sidewalk, but may
be wider in locations with high pedestrian demand or narrow
sidewalks.
Crosswalk width: 10 feet minimum
•
Because of safety concerns, designs should not contain readable
text.
•
For safety reasons, DOT may require parallel lines on the edges
of the crosswalk that span the length of the crosswalk.
•
One artist (or artist team) will be chosen for each intersection.

B. Standard Intricate Designs
• Resume: Resume of the artist(s), including contact information.
If applying as a collaborative artist group, one artist should be
represented as a lead on the project. If the group has a formal
vision or mission, please make that know. This may be
submitted electronically or by mail.
• Crosswalk Proposal: Please include an image of your proposal.
If electronic, please send in jpeg format. If you are mailing a
hard copy drawing, please do not send the original. This
proposal should clearly communicate your design for the review
panel.

Timeline
• Application Deadline:
March 16th 2015
Because of the rigorous project timeline, applications received past the deadline
and those that are found to be incomplete cannot be reviewed.

March 30th, 2015

Budgets
Each chosen artist or artist team will have a $1500 stipend to complete a crosswalk. This includes specialty
paint, brushes, stencil materials, and other related materials necessary to complete your design. Anticipated
materials should be itemized in the completed application. Stipend recipients will be responsible for
complete reporting of all project expenditures and will be required to sign a contract.

Guidelines
1. Main Street Fairmont reserves the right to reproduce images of submitted artwork for printed or
internet publicity, catalog, map, or other marketing or educational purposes.
2. Application materials will not be returned.
3. Main Street Fairmont reserves the right to reproduce chosen crosswalk designs in other intersections
throughout the city of Fairmont as needed. Upon application, chosen artists are granting permission
for this reproduction of their copyrighted design. Every effort will be made to alert the artist when
such reproduction is planned.

Eligibility
Any artist over the age of 18 is eligible to apply.
Applicants under the age of 18 must be represented
by an adult and must be accompanied by an adult
during the installation process.
The artist selection panel will be made up of
stakeholders from Fairmont’s Downtown District, a
representative from Fairmont’s Arts & Humanities
Council, a representative from the City of Fairmont
Public Works department, and a representative from
the Department of Transportation.
