If you have a question, concern, or complaint,
which you believe has not been satisfactorily
addressed by our staff, feel free to call our
Administrative Hotline. Our Hotline can also be
used to report suspected fraud, waste and abuse
in accordance with the federal Deficit Reduction
Act of 2005. The Hotline number is posted
throughout the facility. An Administrative
Assistant will take calls, or you can record a
message when no one is available. Please follow
the instructions when leaving a recorded
message. Your call is confidential, but you do
need to provide your name and telephone
number, in case we need to contact you for
more information, and to inform you of the
action taken. You can report Fraud, Waste and
Abuse to the Lehigh County Ethics Hotline at 610
-782-3999. This information is confidential and
caller may remain anonymous.

My son-in-law always made his
Easter egg hunt special for his 5
grandchildren-all girls. He specifies one to hunt for
eggs shaped like soccer balls, the other footballs,
the other yellow colored, green colored and the other blue. They all had the same amount of money
inside. They are all older now and he said it would
be the last year for the egg hunt.

work bringing music to the men and
women in uniform and to the world.

Gloria Davis (pictured below) from D-3,
though not a veteran herself, did serve
our country thru a lifetime of musical and
theatrical accomplishments. Gloria lived
in the Lehigh Valley most of her life. She
studied singing at Juilliard and spent
years touring the United States. She was
the first female musical director and
orchestral conductor in the Lehigh Valley
area. Gloria shared her voice with the
world, touring across Europe from 1946
to 1948. During the 1950’s she actively
supported our men and women in
uniform, participating in three
professional USO tours to entertain the
troops in Asia and the South Pacific.
Gloria was also honored by Congress.

Mark will be forever remembered here at
Cedarbrook for his decade of dedication as a
volunteer in the gift shop. A place where his
personality and amazing sense of humor was
truly admired by many residents and staff.
Mark often was seen stocking shelves. He
always provided a huge supply of shopping
bags as a courtesy . In addition to his duties
weekly, Mark also assisted for many years at
the annual holiday bazaar event. His devoted service was recognized by the Lehigh
County Board of Commissioners by presenting him with the honor of being “Unsung
Hero”. He also received many certificates of
appreciation, including the Presidential
achievement, along with his wife Bernice.
As Mark has since transitioned to his eternal
rest, his family would like to express their
gratitude for the warm thoughts of sympathy
by everyone in this facility during such a
difficult time of sorrow.
As a longtime
volunteer myself, I am focused on following
the legacy of my beloved grandfather for
many more years to come and the cherished
memories shared together here at
Cedarbrook will forever live on!

Wireless access to the Internet is now
available at Cedarbrook-Allentown and
Cedarbrook-Fountain Hill.
Residents with
wireless devices such as laptops, notebooks,
tablets (Kindle, Nook, etc) may request access
through their Social Worker or Therapeutic
Recreation Aide. Our PC Specialist will assign
a unique username and password, which must
be kept confidential. Visitors may request
access at the switchboard. Usernames and
passwords for visitors will automatically expire
after three days.
Are you looking to drop off a payment for
services at Cedarbrook Allentown after
business hours or on the weekend?
Financial Services now has a lock box located
in the Main Lobby. Feel free to drop off
payments anytime day or night.
It’s official! On June 15, 2015 Cedarbrook
launched its first official website, designed to
inform Lehigh County residents - and the
world at large - about the quality services and
operations provided here.
It also offers
dropdowns for both Allentown and Fountain
Hill locations, with directions, departmental
listings and the newsletters, posted every
month.
On the home page are slider
segments that promote the institution and that
will change from time to time. A highlight of
the front page is the “Ratings & Reviews”
section at the bottom where Cedarbrook users
can submit their opinions on the quality of

Each year, one week is designated as National Volunteer Week. This year it will be
celebrated April 11th to April 17th. Throughout the month of April there are various
volunteer celebrations taking place. One such affair will be held at the Candlelight
Inn, located in Bethlehem.
This event is named “The Breakfast of Champions,”
hosted by the Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley. At this event exceptional
volunteers across the Lehigh Valley are acknowledged. This year’s honorees from
Cedarbrook Nursing Home were Mary Buffington and Al Heydt.
We also celebrate some of our other award winning volunteers. Clifford Salversen
and Lorene Lutz were recognized as “Someone Special” on radio station WAEB during
the week of March 7-11 for their amazing dedication and service to Cedarbrook’s
Allentown facility. A special engraved plaque was created by Gebhardt’s and will be
presented to them as well.
Here at Cedarbrook we will be honoring our adult volunteers at a buffet luncheon
celebration during the second week of April. The theme of our event will be
“Commitment That Goes Above, Care That Goes Beyond.” I sincerely feel this speaks
about the kind of volunteers we have here at Cedarbrook. When you see a volunteer,
please take a minute to thank them for their outstanding service to Cedarbrook and
our residents.

Our Auxiliary is a group of amazing people who might be small in numbers but
accomplish many great and wonderful things for Cedarbrook and its residents.
They are an extremely active organization that has fund raisers sometimes
several times in a month. From food sales to raffles they raise money for all
sorts of things like entertainment, bingo, games and prizes to name only a
few….a full list can be found at the end of this article.
The Auxiliary receives additional funds through the volunteer efforts of a retiree
from Exxon Mobile, Cliff Salvesen and also from residents’ families who select
the Auxiliary to be the recipient of memorial money in honor of their loved one.
Dues also account for some of the annual income.
It is through your support of fundraiser events, like the nacho & food sales,
Gertrude Hawk candy bar sales, raffles, and the bazaar that the Auxiliary is
able to provide all the below mentioned items. “Thank You” to our Auxiliary
and all the wonderful people who continue to support this wonderful
organization.

You can never have too many
Chili recipes. We give this one a
big “thumbs up”. It has layers of
flavor with just the right blend of
spices. When serving give your
guest a choice of toppings such
as shredded Cheddar cheese,
sour cream, diced white onions
or diced jalapeno. This recipe
freezes well.


















5 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 large onions, chopped
1 chile pepper, chopped
5 cloves garlic, chopped
2 pounds lean ground beef
3 (14.5 ounce) cans whole peeled tomatoes with
liquid, chopped
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1-1/2 tablespoons ground cumin
1/2 tablespoon chili powder
2 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons dried oregano
2 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
2 (15.25 ounce) cans red kidney beans, rinsed and
drained.
In a medium sized stock pot, heat the oil over
medium heat. Sauté onion, chile pepper and garlic
until soft. Add ground beef: cook and stir until
meat is browned.
Pour in tomatoes with liquid, salt, pepper, cumin,
chili powder, paprika, oregano, cinnamon sticks,
and cloves. Cover and simmer for 45 minutes.
Stir in kidney beans, and cook another 15 minutes.
Remove cinnamon sticks before serving.

Tips for Keeping
Your Money and
Valuables Safe
Although we discourage residents from
keeping money and valuables in their
room, we realize that many of you will
choose to do so. Therefore, we would like
to offer these tips to help you keep your
money and valuables safe from loss or
theft. Since you have access to the money
in your account during normal business
hours Monday through Friday, we suggest
that you only withdraw the amount you
need for immediate use. If you need larger
sums of money for gifts or to reimburse
your family members for purchases made
on your behalf, we suggest that you
contact Financial Services to arrange for
payment by check. If you choose to keep
money and valuables in your room, we
highly recommend that you secure such
items in the locked drawer of your bedside
cabinet. Keep your key with you, or keep
your key out of sight in a safe place. As
soon as you realize that your money or
property is missing, it is important to
report it immediately to the Charge Nurse.
Cedarbrook will not assume responsibility
for replacing missing property kept by residents on their person or in their room.
However, we will take action to
investigate, and to try to recover your
property if possible. Finally, we ask that
you help us maintain a current inventory of
your personal property. Any property that
you purchase or receive during your stay
should be added to your Valuables
Received After Admission Form, including a
description of the property. This information is essential when trying to locate
missing items.

Dental services will no longer be provided by Stuart Field, DMD, at Cedarbrook
Allentown and Cedarbrook Fountain
Hill. Although some residents have
been enrolled with our other contracted
dental service, HealthDrive, we are
working with HealthDrive to enroll all
residents beginning October 26th.
Residents or their responsible parties
will be contacted by HealthDrive
directly for consent to enroll. Once
enrolled, dental services will be
provided by David Miller, DMD, on-site
at Cedarbrook Allentown and Cedarbrook Fountain Hill.
