From the President…
Hello to you all to our first league game of 2015.
Special welcome to our friends and opponents from Fremantle City, we trust
the game today will be more of a contest when we last met.
Our players have been working hard all pre-season and are now looking
forward to going about accumulating points for their leagues this year. This
weekend we will see all six of our senior sides in action here at Princess Road
through today and tomorrow and we wish you all well for your season.
After the opening rounds of the Cup games we see that only the women and
the Vets are still progressing in their Cups. The reserves however put up a good
performance against NPL opposition Cockburn on Monday and the first team's
loss was a put in a better light when NPL Subiaco only just managed to get past
our vanquishers, Kingsley, 4-3 last weekend.
The Club is looking forward to taking steps forward on and off the park this
year to re-establish our Club back into the higher ranks of football here in
Perth. If you have any ideas or would like to contribute in anyway please come
forward or put your written ideas in the suggestion box at the bar
So enjoy today and the rest of the year, looking forward to singing our song
soon.
Go the black and greens.

From the Coach…
Welcome to Balga Soccer Club to all supporters, committee
members and sponsors from Balga and Fremantle City today.
We look forward to the new and energetic showing from Balga after
a disappointing 2-1 loss at the hands of Kingsley SC in the FFA Cup. A
match in which we created many a chances early on although failed
to capitalise on them, as we keep instilling belief in the players and a
new playing structure for the past 3 weeks, today we look forward to
furthering ourselves in the journey ahead and hopefully coming away
with all 3 points.
Much credit to the team as they have been working hard since my
arrival at the club with the new coaching staff and with new
additional faces in the squad. It will take some time to gel in playing
an attractive style of football which will deliver us the results going
forward. The key is that we are all on the same page, with
commitment comes success, and that is what we are aiming for each
and every week - a competitive and healthy squad willing to work for
each other.
Good luck to Wayne and Adrian today also in what should be a
terrific day of football. Come on the BLACK AND GREEN.
Yours in football

2015 Season
The 2015 State League Division Two season promises to be another exciting
year, with now the possibility of two teams being promoted to Division One.
The team that finishes top will automatically be promoted, while the runnersup will meet the second bottom club of Division One in a play-off.
Forrestfield United will be strong favourites for the title after their
disappointment of missing promotion last year. The club signed several
Division One players prior to the beginning of last year, in the likes of Trend
Wood and Rhys Loxley, and will be determined not to miss out in 2015.
The teams that are likely to challenge Forrestfield are Rockingham City, Curtin
University and Melville City, with Wanneroo City being the dark horse in the
promotion race. Wanneroo were relegated last year, but recently signed Matt
Debarro as senior coach, who has brought in a number of experience players.
In the middle of the pack should be the likes of Fremantle City, Quinns FC and
Joondalup City, all of who will fancy themselves a crack at the top four.
Kingsway Olympic have a new coach in Tom Kilkelly, and should do better this
year, while Ellenbrook United and the Kelmscott Roos are likely to struggle.
What about our own club Balga? We have had many changes over the
summer, which included the decision to appoint Ljupco "Bobby" Taneski as
first team coach just after the completion of the night series. Ljupco has only
had a few weeks to look at the squad, and has already made some significant
new signings which we hope will help us push up the league table.

ROUND FIVE
The Round Five draw of the FFA Cup was made during the week, with
some interesting fixtures . The only two amateur clubs left in the
competition were paired to play each other, with BB United being at
home to Gwelup Croatia. This means a Sunday side is guaranteed to
make the last eight of the WA rounds of the FFA Cup. In the only
other match to have no NPL side involved, is Division Two club
Joondalup City up against Mandurah City from Division One.
First Division heavyweights Ashfield will travel to Dalmatinac Park to
face Cockburn City, while Armadale will make the long journey to
Bunbury to play South West Phoenix. Fremantle City will hope to
give a star studded Perth SC side a run for their money at Hilton
Reserve.
The other fixtures are all NPL affairs, with Inglewood United up
against a strong Bayswater City side, Sorrento will be at home to
Stirling Lions, while Balcatta are against Subiaco AFC. Subiaco only
narrowly beat Kingsley 4-3 in the last minute during the previous
round. All round five games will be played on the ANZAC Day public
holiday (Monday 27th April).

Previous league games against Fremantle City
Balga and Fremantle City have met each other on ten occasions, all under the
name of Fremantle United. Balga have also met East Fremantle Tricolore six
times in the league when both clubs were in the top flight during the mid
1980's.
Against United the current record stands as seven wins for Fremantle United,
one win for Balga, and there have been two draws. Fremantle United last
season gave Balga it's second biggest league loss in the club's history when it
won 9-1. Balga's heaviest league loss ever was the 9-0 loss to Shamrock Rovers
in the Amateur Premier Division in 2003.

Our Opponents
The Fremantle City Football Club was formed as an alliance over the past summer between
East Fremantle Tricolore and Fremantle United.
Tricolore was formed in 1953 by Italian immigrants, and became a super power in WA
football. It won state championships in 1963, 1964, 1965, 1970 and 1972. It's last season in
the top flight was in 1987 when it decided to merge with Perth Azzurri and Balcatta Etna to
form "Perth Italia". Tricolore continued as a junior and social club.
Fremantle United was founded in 1977 and joined the Amateur League in 1982. It made the
Amateur Premier Division by 1986, and then became one of the strongest Amateur clubs in
Western Australia, winning eight state amateur league titles, plus five amateur cups. The
club then decided to join the Saturday State League Division Two competition in 2012.

ROUND ONE - 1985
The opening round of today's league season marks the 30th anniversary of Balga's first ever
game in the top flight of Western Australian football after only fourteen years after the club
was formed. The game was against Osborne Park Galeb at Princess Road Reserve.
Balga started the game the strongest, and had the better of the earlier exchanges with
Willie Kelly causing Galeb many problems. Stephen Sceats almost gave Balga the lead when
his 20 metre shot just went over the bar. In the 24th minute, Bert Kirkpatrick with an inswinging corner found the head of Tom Burke who headed against the post, Kelly headed
the rebound goalwards which was handled on the line. Kirkpatrick took the penalty and
scored. Within 30 seconds, Galeb equalised from a thunderous free kick by Ian McAulley.
A foul on Galeb's Steve Purcell in the penalty area resulted in a penalty in which McAulley
converted to make it 2-1. Balga were desperate for the equaliser, and it nearly came in the
86th minute when Kirkpatrick was brought down just outside the box, but the resulting free
kick was saved. In stoppage time Ray Illot had a chance to score for Balga, but again the
Galeb defence stood firm.
Balga squad vs Galeb: Emmens (GK), McKinley, Andrews, Hopkins, Burke, Brown, Sceats,
Kirkpatrick, Kelly, Saunders, Sanderson. Subs: Illott, Garland.
The proudest day in Balga's short history may have ended in a loss, but it was the start of
three seasons in WA's top league. The first season in 1985, Balga ended the season on a
high to avoid relegation in the last match of the season. The following year the club finished
eighth before relegation in 1987. Even though 1987 was a difficult year for the first team, it
was our Reserves who ended up being the best reserves team in Western Australia when
the black and greens won the state championship.
