LARC 2011 Fall Fundraiser
Y
ou are invited to Lamorinda Adult Respite Center’s 12th annual Fall Fundraiser event. Last year
this event which was through a direct mailer raised approximately $12,500. These monies were
used to continue providing a program that enhances the quality of life for adults with memory loss, respite for
caregivers, and support for the families of the participants.
This year the event will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2011, from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m. at Holy Shepherd Lutheran
Church, 433 Moraga Way, Orinda (925-254-3422). The evening will begin with pony cart rides and face painting in
the parking lot of the church and will be followed by a barbecue dinner, western dancing, line-dancing instruction and
wonderful raffle prizes. This event will entertain the whole family while raising needed funds to further enhance the
care provided to older adults in our community. We have secured many exciting items that are available to you
through a raffle drawing.
We are pleased to have the Judy Brown Band providing music again this year for your dancing and listening pleasure. Please join us for a night of fun! There is a $23 donation for adults and an $8.00 donation for children ages 3
through 12 (children under 3 are free). The donation covers dinner, dancing and 2 complimentary beverage tickets
redeemable for soft drinks or wine and beer for the adults! Your tickets for the dinner and beverages will be held at
the door. Make checks payable to LARC and indicate in memo line that monies are for dinner and/or raffle tickets.
Raffle tickets are on page 7 of this brochure. Please specify how many dinner tickets you are paying for, i.e., adults
and children. Due to seating capacity restrictions, dinner tickets should be purchased in advance and received by
September 30 – we can not guarantee seating for ticket requests after that date. If all tickets are not sold prior to the
event there will be limited sales at the door. If you would like us to reserve an entire table (tables seat 8) for your
dining pleasure with your friends, please let Linda (see below) know in advance. We are happy to reserve fewer seats
at a table, also, to ensure that your party can sit together.
You can also support this fun and worthwhile event by purchasing raffle tickets which are included on page
11. Tickets cost $12 each, five for $55, ten for $100, twenty for $175. Please write your name, phone number, email
and the number of the raffle item on each ticket. A return mailing label works great, but be sure to include your
phone number and the raffle item! Enclose a check made payable to LARC and return in the pre-addressed envelope provided. Raffle tickets that do not specify a desired prize package will be randomly distributed amongst all prize
packages. The winner does not need to be present to win except for the CASH Raffle drawing. There will be a special
drawing at 9:15 p.m. for a cash prize and the winner does need to be present in order to win. Employees, Board Members and volunteers of LARC and employees of the church are ineligible to win this raffle item.
Your donations are tax deductible to the extent provided by law. LARC is privately supported and neither solicits
nor accepts government funding. Fees are kept to a minimum in order to help our clients remain at home as long as
possible.
Thank you for supporting our program! Please do not hesitate to contact Carole Weyand, (925) 254-1760,
[email protected] or Linda Hudak, (925) 254-3422, [email protected] if you have questions.

Mike, Spencer, Dan and Judy
(Alan was not available for picture)
Dan is originally from Long
Beach, CA and got his
musical start playing
orchestral percussion from
Mozart to West Side Story.
Transitioning from the black
tie performance
environment to jeans and
Rock ’n Roll in 1972, Dan
played with JT and the
Smacks, a Southern
California rock and blues band, until he moved north in
1984. After a musical hiatus while raising a family, he
re-engaged his musical career with Blue Plate Special
here in the East Bay. Most recently he played with local
blues bands Blue Midnight and Inconsoulable. Dan lives
in Danville with his wife and two daughters.
Spencer is a professional
lead guitarist who has
played with many great
bands from Chicago to
California. He received his
first guitar at age 13 and
by age 15 he was a
recording artist and
performed on Television.
He has played for great
bands such as Albert
Collins, Eddie Taylor,
Fenton Robinson, Lefty
Diz, Melvin Taylor, Buddy Guy and blues legend Willie
Dixon. He lived his passion singing, recording and
playing lead guitar in his own combo "Deacon Blues.” He
is always delighted to share his passion for music with
the “Judy Brown Band.”
Judy learned guitar at age 18 and
within 6 months started a rock
and roll all-girls band, “The Royal
Queens,” in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin - she played lead
guitar and sang. They played
sock hops and on a radio show on
Saturdays for one year. She
married her high school
sweetheart at age 19 ½ and
moved to California and gave up
playing the guitar for 25 years.
She started playing again in 1982
when she met Smokey Coats who played steel guitar. They
played together with various musicians for 13 years. Due to
health reasons, Smokey is no longer in the “Judy Brown Band”
but he will remain dear to her heart for the inspiration and joy
they shared in playing country music together. She feels
blessed with the current band members and they all share the
same passion for music to include country, rock & roll and
blues. It is the pleasure of the “Judy Brown Band” to play for the
Lamorinda Adult Respite Center’s fundraiser. It is their sixth
year to provide music for this event.
Mike Fourie has been playing
bass for several decades. A fixture of the Bay Area Club Scenes
he has played with a wide variety
of jazz, blues, rock, country and
swing bands since the 70’s. The
best job he ever played is the
one tonight.
Alan Hand was born in Atlanta,
Georgia, Alan started taking piano lessons at the age of 5. His
mother soon recognized that he
was bored with the simplicity of
Beginners Piano and sought an
advanced teacher. For the next
14 years he took lessons from
two noted classical concert pianists. At age 15, he expressed a
lack of interest in classical music and chose to stop classical
lessons.
Alan joined his first band, “The Rox,” in 1965. In 1969 Alan
went to Greenwich Village in New York, where his talent connected him with artist Richie Havens and other musicians in
and around the Café a GoGo on Bleeker. The fall of 1969
found him at the Woodstock Festival and shortly thereafter he
moved to the small village of Woodstock, N.Y. where he was
introduced to Van Morrison. Alan performed and recorded with
Van on the Street Choir album. Later he joined ranks with artist John Prine and after a successful year of traveling with
John began to work with Bonnie Raitt. In 1981, upon beginning
a family and giving his life to Jesus Christ, he stepped out of
the music industry to seek and find a successful career as an
electrician, which he still holds today and is Sr. Superintendent
of the Electrical and Lighting Maintenance Shops at the U.C.
Berkeley Campus, but he has never given up music and his
love of it but confines himself to local club and festival dates as
a backup pianist, performing in and around the Bay Area for
the past 22 years.
