celebrate? For a lot of reasons! Teens have so
many options for entertainment, so it’s important
to remind them to spend some time reading for

Parent Toddler Workshop. As a
Family Place Library, we offer a special time during which the Library
provides the setting in which parent
and child can play one-on-one. The
setting includes a play kitchen area,
riding toys, puzzles, books, musical
instruments, an art activity area and
more. Local resource professionals
visit each workshop to provide information to parents to help in the
rewarding but challenging role of
parenting a toddler. Resources for
parents include: a child development
specialist, experts on speech development, dental health, lead poisoning prevention and nutrition; an
authority on play; and children’s
librarians, who are experts in early literacy development.
This 5-week program is for families
with children ages 12-35 months.

camera or we will give you one and develop the film.
Photograph subjects of your own choosing, including

the next meeting of the Camera Club and get ready to

play that will increase your vocabulary and feed the hungry at the same time. Go to www.freerice.com and start
playing by clicking on the answer that best defines the
word. If you get it right, you get a harder word, if you get
it wrong, you get an easier word. Each word equals 20
grains of rice, 5 words equals 100 grains of rice. All the
rice goes to the UN Hunger Program to feed the hungry
around the world. It may not sound like a lot, but remember, you are not the only one playing. In its first five
months freerice generated enough rice to feed more than
one million people.

In-person registration for MMSCL cardholders begins on
Tuesday, October 7. In-person registration for non-district
patrons (space permitting) begins on Wednesday,
October 8.
A two-part defensive driving course will be offered
for seniors age 50 and over. The fee for the
course is $10.00 per person. Only checks or
money orders are acceptable, and must be made
payable to AARP. Payment is due upon registration. Please note, you must complete both parts
to receive credit for the course.

Help for the Visually Impaired
The Community Library has acquired a Merlin
LCD, which is a full-color, auto-focus video magnification system designed to enhance the
lifestyle of the visually impaired. The Merlin
enables individuals with low vision to read, write,
view photos, and more in color, black and white,
or enhanced high-contrast positive or negative
viewing modes. With easy-to-use buttons that
are distinguishable by touch, you can enlarge or
reduce images in seconds. To use the Merlin,
please stop by the Adult Services Information
Desk, and a librarian will be glad to assist you.
Appointments are necessary for this service.
A trained counselor from the Suffolk County
Office for the Aging will be available to help with

instruments and dressed in native outfits, Yarina weaves together an imaginative tapestry of South American musical styles, and their repertoire extends
to include jazz, blues, Latin and western classical masterpieces. Yarina sings in
three languages, including their native Kichwa, Spanish and English. The worldclass musicians and dancers in Yarina perform to standing room only crowds
throughout Europe and the Americas, and were named “Ambassadors for
Indigenous Ecuadorian Performers” by the Dept. of Culture in Quito, Ecuador.
Most recently, Yarina won a NAMMY (Native American Music Award) for “Best
World Music”.
Yarina is dedicated not only to musical excellence, but also to the preservation
and sharing of the beauty, courage and survival of the ancestral traditions and culture of the indigenous peoples of Ecuador.
All programs are available to Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community
Library cardholders and require advanced registration, unless otherwise indicated. Please have your library card available when you
register. The Library is glad to provide reasonable accommodations for patrons with special needs. Please call us at least two
weeks prior to the program to make arrangements.
Photographs may be taken at any of the Library's programs for use
in Library publicity. Please inform us if you do not want photos
taken of you or your child(ren).
This hauntingly beautiful and immensely appealing program combines
music, stories and dance to transport audiences of all ages to the Andes.
This event will be held in the Community Library’s auditorium. A library card
is not required.
