Vu and Greg’s Lance: Best in Show at the Regional Specialty on Fri. Feb. 25
The NCA Reginal Specialty and Silver Bay Shows
By Larry Anderson
When the final lineup came for Best of Breed at the NCSD-
sponsored NCA Regional Specialty show on Friday, Feb. 25,
2011, an impressive field of 16 gorgeous Newfs entered the
ring. Judge Terry Berrios had her work cut out for her! She
took a long time, putting each dog and handler through their
paces. She broke the dogs into groups and selected some
from each group, dismissing the others. After combining the
remaining contenders, she made her final choice. Her BISS
selection was GCH Pawsinn Threeponds Lancelot, “Lance.”

Specialty & Silver Bay (continued from page 1)
This was not surprising. Grand Champion
Lance had won Best of Breed at the most
prestigious Westminster show in New York
City held in Madison Square Garden on
Feb. 17, 2011. NCSD’s Vu Nguyen and Greg
Dotzman have two fabulous Newfs, Lance
and Lucas (see OH WOW! starting on p. 18).
The regional specialty led off with the puppy
sweepstakes. Rodney and Karrie Cook’s
Keiran won the 6-9 month dog class and
also won Best of Opposite Sex to Best in
Sweepstakes Cruz-Penelope. CeCe and son
Bryson’s Spencer took second place. CeCe,
Kerry and Jen’s Quinn won the 9-12 month
dog class. Mary Killian’s Pearl won the 12-15
month bitch class.
Craig Dennis with breakfast setup
Rodney and Karrie’s Obie won the 7-9 year
veteran sweeps class as well as the best of
opposite sex to veteran sweeps winner Jolie.
Kathy McIver’s 12-year-old Katie (Register of
Merit, ROM) won the 9 years and over class
and still looks fabulous! (see pp. 12-13)
After the sweepstakes were completed, the
regular class competitions began. Kieran won
the 6-9 month puppy dog class followed by
Kerry & Craig Dennis’ Tommy. Quinn won
the 9-12 month dog class.
In the open black dogs class, Aukai “Keep the
Stoke” (call name “Laird” after the famous
surfer) won the class followed by Katie
Jacobsen’s Dante. Laird was winners dog,
and Keiran was named reserve. Shasta took
winners bitch and Obie won veteran dog.
Beautiful Specialty trophies, thanks to generous donors
As per our cover, Lance was best of breed.
Laird was best of winners, and Kim & Gigi
Griffith’s Jolie was best of opposite sex.
Steve and Linda Barkas’ Sebastian was
named select dog, and Kerry and Craig’s
Maddy was select bitch.
It is apparent from the number of NCSD
winners at this year’s NCA Regional
Specialty held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds,
that our club has some truly great Newfs,
despite our warm climate. Read further
in our “OH WOW!” section if you have
any doubts about this. As you’ll see, for
example, Lance was the first Newf ever to
receive the Grand Champion title and is
currently ranked the number two Newf in the
entire United States!

THE SILVER BAY SHOWS
Michelle Alpern’s Brodie was Best of Breed on Saturday, Feb. 26. His touching story was on p. 13 in the Dec.– Jan. NW.
The big Silver Bay KC shows at Del Mar are
always exciting. This year’s shows were no
exception. Our Newfs showed well in the NCSD
supported entry on Saturday. Michelle’s Brodie
won Best of Breed, Vu & Greg’s Lance was
select dog and Kerry & Craig’s Maddy was select
bitch. The Griffiths’ Jolie won best opposite.
You may recall Brodie’s story that appeared in
our last issue. Michelle took the emaciated
dog from a neighbor’s garage and brought
him back to health. He certainly looks healthy
now! What a beauty! WOW!
Leading up to the final competition, Kerry’s
Tommy won the 6-9 month class and was
8
named reserve, CeCe, Jen & Kerry’s Quinn
won the 9-12 class, and Ginger Gomez’s
Laird was best of winners on Saturday.
On Sunday, the Griffiths’ Jolie won best of
breed, and Vu & Greg’s Lance was select dog.
Laird was again chosen best of winners.
NCSD’s Meet-The-Breed booth was a big hit
both days. Organizer Mary Milton and her team
really put on a show! As a thank-you to her
volunteers, here is Mary’s “Lifeguards at Work.”

WHO KNEW IT WOULD BE SO MUCH FUN
By Kerry Dennis
A few weekends ago on a Saturday, Jen Vampola and I slipped, bleary eyed, at dark thirty in the morning, into my SUV with
Maddy and headed up north. Equipped with food for us and Maddy, lots of water, mud boots, rain gear, sun screen, crate,
treats for Maddy and us, sun shade, harness for Maddy, and overnight clothes, we were off. Camping, you ask? No, tracking!
Well, our first tracking workshop actually, but by the end of the day Maddy was tracking!
We arrived at The Prado Dog Park, (585 acres of land and water exclusively tailored for various types of dog training), in
Chino Hills, at 7:30 where we were met by Heidi Forrest of the SoCal Newf Club, the organizer of the Workshop and various
other teams with their dogs of all sizes and breeds.
Jen and I were both excited to be meeting the Workshop Leader, Judi Adler from SweetBay Newfoundlands in Oregon, the
author of The Audible Nose (a tracking book) and Water Work, Water Play an extensive book on training Newfoundlands for
water work and water titles.
After a little briefing about what we would be doing, she set us to work, pairing us into teams that would work together and
take turns setting tracks for each other’s dogs. The field that we used first had foot high grass, which was ideal for tracking.
I started with my partner, taking her leather glove and treats and laying a track a few feet in front of the dog calling his name
and inciting him to get the glove which I put down into the long grass. With the command to “find it” she let the dog pull
ahead of her to locate the glove and the treats on top of it. Pretty basic, as I was still standing there with the glove in front of
me on the ground. We continued to do this down the field, making the distances longer and longer but making sure each time
that the dog met with success. Judi was terrific, coming around to each team and offering suggestions and encouragement.
Then it was Maddy’s turn. I harnessed her up, and gave my partner my glove and some really prime treats. Well, I was not
prepared for how well Maddy would do at this, but really I should have known, because it involves finding TREATS! And
Maddy is a dog that lives to eat!
After the first couple of easy drops that Maddy could see, the track layer went out much further in the tall grass and Maddy,
who never pulls at the leash, forged out in front of me on the ‘find it” command - her nose to the ground, following the track in
pursuit of those yummy treats! It just seemed to be instinctive.
After mastering this task we moved to taller knee high grass and more of a tracking challenge, as Jen took over handling
Maddy. The track was laid and the glove dropped with the treats, but now the tracklayer moved off to the side and came back
around behind the dog and handler. As you can see by the photograph, Maddy was up to the task, and with her nose to the
ground, easily found the glove and treats. Maddy was tracking!
The day flew by and after a break for lunch and more instruction from Judi we watched the experienced dogs track more
difficult trails with turns. It was amazing to see dogs of all breeds and sizes excel at this sport. Some of the smaller dogs were
especially fun to watch, as they were almost lost in the tall grasses.
In the late afternoon we followed Heidi back to her home in Long Beach where we would stay for the night. Her wonderful
husband Don met us with wine and cheese and yummy aromas coming from the kitchen. Judi Adler, Debbi Rothwell
and Peter joined us for a glorious meal prepared by Don. It was wonderful to be able to talk to Judi about all sorts of
Newfoundland issues and training techniques, as Judi has been raising, training and breeding working Newfoundlands for
over 40 years. She and her husband train and title their own Newfs in conformation, obedience, rally, water work, draft work
and tracking. We found her to be a wonderful teacher.
The next morning we were back at the Prado bright and early for the second day of the workshop which involved honing
the skills that we had learned the day before and adding distance to our lays, and demonstrations by more advanced dog
tracking dogs. The Newf breed was well represented with 9 Newfs in the seminar. I worked with Karrie Cook and her Newf,
Obie of the SoCal club that was well represented with 8 Newfs and one Lab.
In all it was a great workshop, and Jen and I agreed that it was great fun, and the tracking was something that we would love
to do again and learn more about. Maddy loved it, as it involved looking for and finding great treats! And who knew you didn’t
have to have a bloodhound to do tracking!

Kerry’s Maddy (Goldcoast Madison Ave Uptown Girl) finished her Grand Championship in January with a Best of Opposite (to
Lucas) at the So Cal Regional Specialty in Indio. She then got Best of Breed at the Tri-Valley Working Dog Show in January to
finish with four major wins in eight shows. Maddy will retire from the show ring for a while, as we are hoping that she will be on
maternity leave soon. Kerry says, “Many thanks to Jane Crouch and Kristen Coronado for amazing grooming and handling!”
Lois Apfel’s Neela Earns Tracking and Rally Titles
Neela and I were lucky enough to make the draw for a track at the German Shepherd
Dog (GSD) Tracking Test on Jan 26, 2011. It was a 10 track test with GSD’s having
the first priority.
Before you can enter a tracking test, you have to contact a judge and have her lay a
certification track. It is between 450-500 yards long with 3-5 turns, and is aged 30
minutes to 2 hours. Neela passed this on December 17th, 2010.
The test was held at Barnett Ranch Preserve in Ramona, CA. On that Wednesday we
had high wind warnings and heavy winds with somewhat dry conditions as it hadn’t
rained in a couple weeks. Neela managed to stay focused thru that wind and finished
her 375 yard track with 3 corners and was standing over her glove in nine minutes.
She might have been faster, but did check out a coyote bed nearby at her start (yes,
sly critters) and stopped a couple times to look back as if to say “Are you coming?”
Seems her handler isn’t as fast as she is. I am so proud of her; not bad for a dog under
2 years old.
Back: Lois Apfel, tracking judge Robin
Gruenwald, track layer Bob Long. Front
row: Neela, tracking judge Sally Nesbitt.
Neela finished her Novice Rally title at SDOC on Friday, February 25th at the
DelMar Fairgrounds. Her first two legs were at the Lab Specialty at Bates Nut Farm
the weekend of Feb 19-20. Her scores varied from 90 - 95, and she had placements in
all three trials, thanks to Rita Wolkiewicz’s excellent job of handling.
Young Neela is now Sweetbay’s Neela TD RN.

Queen Has Fun at the Seattle Comicon
NewfWaves
Blair and Kymythy Schultze and their Newf Queen recently attended the Seattle Comicon. Queen’s
great temperament was put to the test as she met various comic-book and sci-fy characters such
as Klingons, Transformers, Darth Vader, and more (she loved them all and did a belly-up-sillyspaz for a Jedi Knight!). The highlight of the day was talking and taking photos (on facing page)
with a couple of icons: Star Trek’s own “Captain James T. Kirk” of the USS Enterprise (William
Shatner) and “Spike” from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (James Marsters). The most memorable
moment was when William Shatner saw Queen and said, in his very distinctive voice; (do your best
William Shatner impersonation with the following sentence) “Now that’s...a...beautiful...dog!” After
comicon, Queen partied the night away with James Marsters at the Hard Rock Cafe (James is also
a talented musician). Ah, the life of a Queen!

Historian: Kerry requested permission to purchase more white binders for the continuing preservation of pictures and
other items with historical significance to NCSD. The board granted the request.
Members at Large:
Mary: Mary issued a thank you to all those who participated in the Meet the Breed booth at the Silver Bay Dog Show.
Wayne: No Report
Committee Reports:
Conformation: CeCe reported that the Regionals went very well. Joe brought up that many other clubs have more
puppy entrants than we do and maybe we need to inform and encourage our membership that this can be a fun
opportunity in the show arena. We will seek more ideas for 2012.
Membership: Catherine reported that the directory is out and dues for 2010 are still arriving and new members are still
requesting information. All new members have a bio published in the NewfWaves to better acquaint us all with them.
It was suggested that the board members be more welcoming to new members at an event by introducing themselves
with a club flyer to introduce potential members to NCSD and let them know some of the fun activities we do.
NewfWaves: Larry needs items to go in the NewfWaves ASAP.
Working: A Water Test will be held in September 18, 2011. Linda Barkas will Chair the event and will be looking for
assistance from the membership on that day. In order to increase participation in activities such as the Water Test and
Drafting it was suggested we seek people who could help newcomers in what is needed to enter and compete.
Program/Activities: Activities for the year are set up. The next activity is the Easter Egg Hunt on April 16, 2011 at
San Dieguito Park in Solana Beach
Newf Boutique: No report. Sherry is still searching for someone to volunteer to take over the Newf Boutique. So far
no one has come forward.
NCSD Website: Steve is still looking for pictures taken at events to publish on the website.
Old/Unfinished Business: Joe presented the budget for 2009-2010 and the proposed budget for 2010-2011. Both will be
published in this issue of NewfWaves.
New Business: It is time once again for selecting a Nominating Committee. The selected members are Jack Thomas,
Steve Barkas and Catherine Theodore. Mary Milton, Member-at-Large, is the only board member who will be leaving
the board this year. A slate of officers will be published in the next NewfWaves. Anyone wishing to run for office or put
someone else on the ballot must also submit the nominee’s written acceptance of the nomination.
Next Board Meeting: Sunday, June 5, 2011 at 9:00 am at the same Marie Callender’s as today.
Time of Adjournment: 10:55am
Respectfully submitted,
Sherry Thomas, secretary

NEWF’S CURRENTLY IN RESCUE: None at this time, but two dogs, Kaylee and Kahuna,
will possibly come into rescue very soon. They are about 4-5 years old at this time, and
the question is if they will be split up to facilitate their adoption, as this would be their third
home.
Duke, an eight-year-old who came into rescue on Jan. 20, 2011 and was fostered by Sherry
& Jack Thomas. They have decided to adopt Duke. The board voted not to charge an
adoption fee for Duke.
Last week Catherine and Sam received a call from the Chula Vista Animal Care Center
about a small, ten year old Landseer/mix in their care. He has multiple physical problems
and we will approach the membership to see if anyone is interested in taking this dog. If so
