Brian Matheson walked to help find a cure
for multiple sclerosis. He was one of more
than 150 people who participated in the
Caledon Mandarin MS Walk at the Caledon
Community Complex on Sunday.
Matheson, 55, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 14 years ago.
“It’s caused me to slow my life down,” he
said. “I was a small-business owner until
this year I finally sold my business because
I couldn’t continue to work the hours that I
was working.”
Multiple sclerosis attacks the body’s central nervous system.
“I live with extreme fatigue, vision issues
and balance issues,” said Matheson.
But since his diagnosis he has been walking at MS Walks all over the province.
Joanna Sullivan, the fundraising and
community outreach coordinator for the
Peel chapter, said Sunday’s walk raised over
$46,000, smashing its goal of $30,000.
“We have so many people, but it’s beyond who comes and physically walks;
there are so many more things and people
who go into making this a success,” she said.
Matheson added that he was “thrilled” at
the support on display in Caledon.
Canada has one of the highest rates of
MS in the world, with more than 100,000
Canadians living with MS.
