The Makapan Valley in Limpopo is a heritage site of its kind where extensive cultural
and palaeontological deposits have played a crucial role in furthering our
understanding of later human evolution and the appearance of modern man.
It consists of two caves, with one of historical importance as a site of repeated refuge
from conflicts between the Ndebele and the Voortrekkers in the 19th century. The
caves were named after the great chief Makapan.
The excursion will include a visit to the Arend Dieperink Museum, in Mokopane, that
contains a valuable cultural historical collection of Sotho and Voortrekker artefacts.
This heritage site has been declared a World Heritage site.
NOTE: Payment of R50.00 per person will allow entrance to both the Museum and the Caves.
