MAY 13TH ORCHESTRA AUDITIONS
Welcome to Beckendorff Junior High! We are happy that you will be a part of our amazing orchestral
program! Your audition will include a prepared a solo of your choice, performing two-octave scales up to two
sharps and two flats, and sight reading. We want you to play your best! As you prepare your scales, know
that our current BDJH First Year Orchestra students are proficient in the following two-octave Major scales:
A, D, G, C, F, B-flat, and E-flat. Those wanting to audition for the Honor Orchestra must play three-octave
scales.
THE MIDWEST CLINIC: Our Honor Orchestra has been invited to perform at the prestigious The Midwest
Clinic in Chicago next year. Information regarding this trip and parent meeting is included in this email.
Please note that it is not impossible, yet extremely rare, for sixth grade students to be selected for
membership in the Honor Orchestra.
Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your audition time so you have time to adequately warm-up for your
audition. Report to the orchestra room for your audition (Room 1126).
Please know that this audition does not guarantee placement in one of our performing orchestras.
While students may have previous playing experience, it may be necessary for them to be placed in
our First Year Orchestra in order to gain the fundamentals and skills necessary for more advanced
level playing. Orchestra placement is determined by Mr. Butz. All results are final and at the sole
discretion of Mr. Butz. No student is allowed to re-audition in the fall.
Orchestra placement results will be announced on May 28, 2015 at www.beckendorfforchestras.org
th

CHICAGO TRIP: 2015 MIDWEST CLINIC
WHAT? The Midwest Clinic (www.midwestclinic.org) is the most prestigious band and
orchestra music convention that features the top performing ensembles from around the
world. In addition, latest teaching methods from leading pedagogues and several new
compositions are premiered at the Midwest Clinic. Each December, approximately 17,000
people attend the Midwest Clinic held at McCormick Place in Chicago.
WHO? After a rigorous and competitive audition process, the Beckendorff Honor
Orchestra accepted the invitation to perform at the Midwest Clinic. This is a tremendous
privilege and honor for Beckendorff to represent Katy and the state of Texas on a world
stage. Students must perform the necessary audition requirements highlighted in
the audition packet in order to be considered for a coveted spot in the Beckendorff
Honor Orchestra. Performance and advanced playing ability are absolutely critical to
being considered for the Honor Orchestra. In addition, students must exemplify an
incredible work ethic, positive attitude, and excellent rehearsal etiquette in order to be
considered for Chicago. We encourage all Honor Orchestra students to study privately in
order to meet the level of rigor required for this orchestra.
Students selected for the 2015-2016 Honor Orchestra are expected to commit to
participating in the Midwest Clinic.
WHY? The world deserves to hear our remarkable students perform! Our students
deserve the opportunity to meet living composers (we will be premiering several new
works with the composers in the audience!) and hear several ensembles from around the
world perform. Orchestra is a profession that requires travel for study and performance.
Our young musicians need the opportunity to travel to one of America’s greatest cities in
order experience the satisfaction of their Midwest Clinic performance in addition to
partaking in cultural opportunities such as the world-renown Chicago Symphony
Orchestra, Broadway, and museums. This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip and one of the best
musical experiences any musician can ever experience.
WHEN? We will receive notification of our performance date and time in June. The
Midwest Clinic is held from December 16-19, 2015.
