Congratulations to IgnitionTV’s 2015 Student of the
Year, Michael Boyette. “A self-motivated learner, Michael finds success with each skill he develops, from
writing, reporting, and anchoring to directing, editing,
and much more. In every area of his life Michael strives
to be professional: in his interactions with teachers and
peers, in his creation of content for our program, even in
his attire and his life outside of IgnitionTV. Michael will
represent IgnitionTV at the 23rd Annual Polk County
Video Awards at Victory Church in Lakeland, FL on
Tuesday, May 5. The ceremony begins at 7 pm. We invite you to join the IgnitionTV crew for this very special
evening,” said Mr. Gash.

On March 17, Pre-Engineering students attended a special presentation by the Mazda racing team at Florida Polytechnic.
Mazda engineers and racecar drivers spoke to students about the integration of STEM in racing and encouraged students
to consider careers in those fields. They also explained the use of renewable fuel that is used to power their racecars. Students were
able to tour
the facilities,
classrooms
and the
STEM Innovation labs.

Engineering for Flight… Aero Design East International
On March 13, 2015, Lockheed Martin and
the Florida Air Museum hosted 75 university engineering design teams in the 2015
SAE Aero Design East International Competition. Students were given an opportunity to observe the presentations, assembly,
safety and technical inspections and test
flights of radio-control aircraft designed
and built by university teams from all over
the world. There were three classes of
competition - Regular, Advanced, and Mi- Back Row/L to R: Michael Brown, Drakon Vines,
cro. The Regular Class allowed competiStephen Brown and Gustavo Contreras with the
tors to develop the fundamental underUniversity of Toronto Team
standing of flight. The Advanced Class
required teams to have a systems approach to design while integrating engineering disciplines: aeronautical, mechanical, electrical, and computer engineers. Micro Class teams
were required to make trades between two potentially conflicting requirements, carrying
the highest payload fraction possible, while simultaneously pursuing the lowest empty
weight possible. “After spending the day at the competition, many CFAA students were
impressed by the students in the
competition. It was a great opportunity for high school students to
see what they could be doing in a

few years. The expectations of
what young students can achieve is
high, and seeing what other students from around the world are
developing is a great way to get
our students interested in developThomas Yingling and Sean Miller with the team from Ohio ing their own designs and ideas,”

said Mr. Bresler.

Building for Speed
Shakira Garcia-Diaz
Shakira has been accepted to Keiser University. Way to go
Shakira!
The Central Florida Aerospace Academy holds a regatta on campus. It is said if it has a
motor, then someone will race it. Engineering students at CFAA had to design and
build a propulsion system and boat hull for
a speed boat project. The students tested and
timed their prototypes in a makeshift lake
this week and will present their designs and
results to their classmates next week.
