Dear Students, Parents, Staff and Community,
I feel honoured and privileged that I have been appointed to the
position of Principal of Coorparoo State School, to commence in
Semester Two. I have worked next door in the DETE offices, as Director
for Learning Technologies from 2011 to 2014, and have seen and heard
of the reputation and culture for which Coorparoo State School is
known.
A little about myself. I am married, my wife Mandy is a Special School
Deputy Principal and our daughter Sarah is in second year university at
Griffith, QLD College of Art.

have been leading large schools of up to 1100 students since 2000.

technology have been a major focus of my leadership. My personal
interests are music, art, photography, motorsports, food and travel.

I have chosen to return to working in schools and intend to be a longterm member of Coorparoo State School. I look forward to working with
staff, students and parents learning about your goals, priorities and
directions, and ensure that the great work you have done continues.
I wish to thank Mr Kennedy for his leadership of the school this year and
Mr Warwick for the vision and foundations of excellence that have been
set. I look forward to visiting before the holidays and seeing firsthand
how you learn together at Coorparoo State School.

HOMEWORK HELP AT HOME
The word ‘homework’ may conjure up negative emotions and experiences for some
parents and children but it is important to stay positive. Although it may be
unbearable at times especially when we are super busy, it is in the best interest of
your child to be as enthusiastic as possible and show interest in what your child is
learning about. Research has shown, particularly with girls, that if you say you were
no good at Maths, this will have a direct, and immediate, negative impact on your
child’s results at school. Therefore it is important not to share your negative feelings,
even if this is difficult. In fact, it may be necessary to fake some enthusiasm and
enjoyment with maths or other topics. From my experience with teaching, there are
certain topics and subjects that I don’t particularly enjoy but the students would
never know as I don’t wish to put my negative experiences on the students. If you
don’t understand the homework concepts yourself, ask your child to explain it to you.
This is a great opportunity for child to consolidate what they know. Make homework
time free from pressure and anxiety, and accept that mistakes are part of the
learning.

Parents can play an important role in protecting their teenagers from mental health
problems. It can be difficult to know whether a change in a teenager’s behaviour is
due to depression or anxiety, or is part of normal adolescent development.
Researchers from Monash University and the University of Melbourne have
developed a new online parenting program designed to empower parents to make
sense of adolescence and parent their teenager with confidence. The program offers
practical strategies that parents can use to support their teenager’s mental health.

If you are a parent or guardian of a child aged 12 to 15, you may be eligible to
participate in a free trial of the program. Participation will take a few hours of yours
and your child’s time, over 3 to 12 months. Both you and your child will be
reimbursed for your time.
Please note, as the program is designed to prevent depression and anxiety problems,
researchers are looking for parents of teenagers who do not have any current mental
health difficulties.

PARKING IN STAFF CAR PARKS
The staff car park in the laneway off Old Cleveland Road is for STAFF ONLY. This
laneway is out-of-bounds for parents dropping off students or parking. From
Wednesday 10 June the laneway off Old Cleveland Road will be manned and only
Coorparoo State School staff and staff from the precinct next door will be allowed to
enter the laneway.

HATS IN PE LESSONS
Please ensure your child has a wide brimmed hat for PE lessons. Students who do not have a hat will not be able to participate in
PE lessons for sun safety reasons.
SENIOR ATHLETICS PROGRAM (Years 3-6)
The annual Senior Athletics Carnival will be held on Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 June. A program will be released in next week’s
Newsletter. Please note that Monday events include Shot Put, High Jump, Long Jump and 800m. Tuesday’s events consist of the
100m, 200m and Ball Games/novelty events.

Thank you to all students who have attended an Athletics trial/s over the past few weeks. The list of competitors for each event
will be displayed in the foyer near Lost Property (in the Admin Block) by the start of Week 8 (a few events for 8/9yrs are still
being confirmed; these will be up by the end of Week 8). Please check this to see which events students have qualified for. If a
student has missed a trial due to illness (or other valid reasons), they are requested to see their PE teacher ASAP. Students will
NOT be added to Championship Events on the day/s of the Carnival. Please remember, students who have not qualified to
compete in a Championship Event/s, will compete in Participation events for each of the athletic disciplines on Athletics Carnival

The 2015 GREAT BOOK SWAP—INDIGENOUS LITERACY DAY
Once again Coorparoo State School will be helping to raise money to improve literacy levels in remote Indigenous communities
by hosting THE GREAT BOOK SWAP which will be held in our Hall on Thursday 3 September.
Sharing the joy that reading can bring to all our lives is a privilege we take seriously. The Indigenous Literacy Fund aims to raise
$100,000 to purchase more than 10,000 books for remote communities. The money will also be utilised to assist with literacy
programmes and promote social justice within schools and communities.
Exceptional writers such as Andy Griffiths and Sally Morgan, ambassadors for foundation, believe ‘reading opens doors to our
young people’s dreams’.
Your family are invited to join in the event to help raise awareness, encourage and create excitement about reading.
HOW IT WORKS
•
Students are invited to bring a book from home to the Library that they have enjoyed but can bear to part with. The books
need to be in good condition and appropriately aimed at an audience from Prep to Year 6 (books may be brought in from
Monday 8 June onwards—boxes for the books will be located in the Library for this purpose).

When your child deposits their book, they will be required to give a $2 coin to one of the Library staff. This will not only
buy the right to select one book from the many that will be on display at the GREAT BOOK SWAP (each class will be timetabled to
attend the Swap Thursday 3 September) but will allow them to participate in a yummy treat and experience a session of
wonderful story-telling and didgeridoo playing from a special guest invited from NGUATNA-LUI CULTURAL CENTRE. (Refer to
details for both events below).

By the end of the event, they will not only have a new book to read but they will have assisted the INDIGENOUS LITERACY
FOUNDATION to purchase books and promote literacy for children in remote Indigenous communities.

Last year, a number of prestigious publishing companies came on board and assisted our school by donating new books
(many of them short-listed) for the cause. Many of the books available at the swap are latest releases.

With the support of the amazing Kate and her terrific Tuckshop crew, we will be providing the children
who participate in the Great Book swap with some yummy bush-tucker.
Baked fresh, each class group will be timetabled to attend the event and experience this yummy treat
NGUTANA-LUI CULTURAL VISITATION (NGUTANA-LUI: “To Teach”)
The Ngutana-Lui Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Studies Centre was established in 1989. The aims of the centre are
to promote and develop cultural understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, express learning
styles, which reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and provide opportunities for students to explore aspects
of both traditional and contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies.
This year, we will be visited by one of the Centre’s experienced educators and learn about the many ways Aboriginal people
impart tales: through art, dance, and song and Dreamtime storytelling. Traditional and contemporary methods will be contrasted
as the students participate in a storytelling experience.
The students will investigate the evolution of the didgeridoo and experience the changing sounds and shapes of this Aboriginal
instrument by contrasting the technology process of traditional and modern didgeridoo making. This will culminate in a bespoke
didgeridoo performance
INDIGENOUS LITERACY FUND GREAT BOOK SWAP Indigenous Literacy – A SNAPSHOT
Indigenous children in remote and very remote locations continue to be significantly outperformed by nonIndigenous students and students living in metro locations. Between 40% and 60% of Indigenous children in
very remote locations across WA, SA and NT are achieving below minimum standard in Reading in Year 3. The
Foundation’s vision and approach to raising literacy levels is focused at a community level. Their emphasis is
on early exposure to apposite and quality books in the home and community through the supply of suitable
texts. They strongly support first language and culturally appropriate writing and work within community to
translate books which represent this objective. They are committed to the encouragement and support of
story writing and the development of community stories through publications. By the age of 15, more than one-third of
Australia’s Indigenous students do not have the adequate skills and knowledge in reading literacy to meet real-life challenges and
may well be disadvantaged in their lives beyond school.
Last year CSS engaged in a tremendously successful Book Swap and significant funds were raised for the foundation. We have
registered again and this year, our aim is to achieve similar success on behalf of the organisation.

SOARING IN SCIENCE

Congratulations to the fantastic students who completed the ICAS Science Test last
week at Coorparoo. 175 students participated. What a great effort from all students!
The Year 2 classes had a wonderful excursion at the Museum and Science Centre and
the Year 3 classes went to the Mount Coot-tha Botanical Gardens and Planetarium. All
classes had a great time and gained lots of scientific knowledge.
Don't forget about the Year 2 'Starry Night' held on Carey Field on Wednesday 24 June.

PARLIAMENT AND CIVICS EDUCATION REBATE PROGRAM
Students from our school will soon be undertaking an education tour of Canberra, the national capital. Students will be given the
opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and
democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital
as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian
Government is contributing funding of $60.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards
those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

A huge thank you to Andersens Coorparoo, the respected name in floor coverings, for
removing the old carpet and flooring in our Staff room, and replacing this with new woodlook vinyl at no cost to Coorparoo State School. Andersens Coorparoo have done a lot of
work for our school over the years. Many thanks to Brock, from Andersens, for organising
the flooring revamp.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
NAIDOC— ‘WE ALL STAND ON SACRED GROUND: LEARN, RESPECT AND CELEBRATE’
The theme for NAIDOC this year is ‘We All Stand On Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate’. It
highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander’s strong spiritual and connection to land and sea. It is an
opportunity to pay respects to country, honour those who work tirelessly on preserving land, sea and
culture and to share the stories of many sites of significance or sacred places with the nation. The NAIDOC
committee encourages all Australians-young and old- to embrace the 2015 National NAIDOC theme and to
celebrate local and national sacred places, taking the time to learn of their traditional names, history and
stories.
Coorparoo State School NAIDOC celebrations are on June 24 – 26 2015. The school has organised NAIDOC activities for all
students and also welcomes parents to participate and be involved in celebrating NAIDOC.
The NAIDOC activities are:

Wednesday 24 June—Piccaninni Dreaming Indigenous performance in the Hall for Prep to Year 5 students. It is an
interactive performance about contemporary Indigenous Australia. The performance is about a character called 'Kool Kookas'
who learns about what it is to be an Indigenous Australian through his relationship with Uncle Roger. The students will benefit
from watching and participating in this indigenous activity due to its interactive nature in which it invites the audiences to dance,
sing, and have fun all the while learning about Indigenous Australian culture.

Wednesday 24 June—Students are encouraged to wear their interhouse sports uniform with yellow socks in celebration of
NAIDOC week. Students to give a gold coin donation that will go towards the Fred Hollows foundation that works tirelessly to
tackle preventable eye disease and other chronic conditions affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Thursday 25 June—Uncle Albert Holt, a well-known and respected Aboriginal Elder from Inala in Brisbane’s South West is
our Indigenous guest speaker who will deliver acknowledgement to country on Parade as well as give a motivational talk to our
Year 5 and Year 6 students.

Friday 26 June—The Gubbi Gubbi people of the Sunshine Coast will be conducting an Indigenous Cultural workshop in the
Hall for Year 5 and 6 students. They will learn about the cultural history of the Gubbi Gubbi people and learn some customs,
beliefs and system of government. They will also hear and learn some Gubbi Gubbi language and the meanings of some of the
local towns, places and names.
I would like to encourage all students to participate in the NAIDOC celebrations at the school to learn about Indigenous

Only two weeks of School Banking left for the term! This week and next week. We will draw the winner of the Dollarmites
backpack full of goodies on Thursday 18 June at Parade. If students have banked at least one Wednesday in the past few weeks,
they will be in the draw!
Don’t forget the Disneyland competition. Students need to bank at least 25 times in the year. This will be drawn at the end of
Term 4.
Students can now pre order their reward once they reach nine tokens. So, once they hit ten tokens, their prize will be sent to
class. They can fill out their reward item choice, and include with their money in their deposit book, once they are at nine tokens.
You will notice that your friendly banking ladies are writing the token balance on the back of the deposit butt. If you have any
queries, please don’t hesitate to ask via email. Occasionally we may miss a few but we endeavour to remember each week!
Thank you to the ladies who helped out last week, they were super-efficient. We thank Nicole Wilson, Yiping Fan, Andrea

We’ve been selected to participate in Local Matters at Grill’d Camp Hill this June.
Local Matters is the Grill’d community donation program that sees each Grill’d restaurant donate $500 back into the community
every month. The donation is split between three local community groups $300 / $100 / $100.
How can you help?
We’d love your support in receiving the highest $300 donation!
Simply head to Grill’d Camp Hill during June, for a burger and pop your Local Matters token in our jar. The group with the most
tokens at the end of the month receives the largest donation. It’s a simple (and delicious) way to show your support!

TRAFFIC UPDATE
Procurement of the new ‘special’ kerb build-out islands is almost finalised and the works are scheduled to occur over the next
four weeks so as to avoid impacting the children’s crossing operational times and completion of the project is due by June 30.
This is a direct result of continued lobbying and commitment of the parent/community led traffic group.
TENNIS COURT HIRE
The P&C has taken over the tennis court hire from the school. We will be collecting the annual court hire fees for 2015 in the
next few weeks.

We have submitted grants for the following and are just waiting to hear of the outcome:

Australia Post Grant for 10 iPads for a loan scheme for children at CSS requested
Main Road Grant to assist in the Stop Drop and Go area.
Land Care Grant requesting $2,000 for items for the school garden in Wolff Park.

A massive thank you to all those who assist with the enormous work required for preparing grant applications.
SPELL-A-THON 2015
Another fabulous year of fund-raising for Spell-a-thon sees almost $25,000 donated to our school. Thanks to everyone who
participated and raised money.
We distributed about 500 incentive prizes – mostly the ever popular ‘GOO’ pack!
Prep K was the highest fund-raising class in Kijini campus – and will soon enjoy their class pizza party! 3G wins an AMF Bowling
party for raising the most as a class throughout all of the rest of the school.
Phoebe S from 6D collected more money than any other student and thanks to Little Sista will be able to enjoy a wonderful
reward at their café. Our two major prizes went to some of our youngest students.
Liam P 1M is likely very grateful to Geekworks for donating the iPad Mini he and his family are now enjoying and Beau C Prep V
will be able to download some books to his Kindle for the holidays thanks to Dick Smith Carindale.
COORPAROO CARNIVAL
What are we raising money for?
After discussion with the Principal, Deputy Principals, Teachers, P&C Executive and at P&C meetings we have decided money
raised from this year’s Carnival will go towards replacing the outdoor play equipment on Kijini Oval. More than a third of our
school community uses this play equipment every day. Why is it important? This kind of play equipment helps children’s
cognitive, emotional, physical and social development. Importantly, it also encourages kids to be healthy, active and have fun!

Do you run a local business? Would you like to promote your product or service to over 650 families at Coorparoo State School?
The P&C has two sponsorship/advertising opportunities for connecting with our community.

Local businesses who provide cash sponsorship or in-kind donations receive multiple benefits (depending on their level of
support) from logo and links in the school Newsletter, Carnival website and Facebook mentions to banners on the school fence
and acknowledgement on the school message board.

COORPAROO CONNECT – FRIDAY 12 JUNE
The next get-together will be on Friday 12 June at 9am at the entrance to the Hall. Everyone is welcome to come along. Tea and
coffee will be available and contributions for a shared morning tea are most welcome. Sheela Srinivas has offered to co-ordinate
the get together sessions but at this stage if you wish any further information please contact Leisa Whybird

SCHOOL DANCE FRIDAY 12 JUNE
The first School Dance for 2015 will be on Friday 12 June in the school Hall. All students from Prep to Year 6 are welcome to
attend however all children must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult. The Dance will be split into two
sessions. 5.00pm – 6.30pm for Prep to Year 3. Pizza will be served from 5.00pm. The second session will run from 6.45pm –
8.45pm for Years 4 – 6 students. Ticket price is $10.00 per child and can only be purchased on the night. The cost includes a slice
of pizza, a drink and an ice-block. Helpers are needed throughout the evening with selling tickets, security, serving food and clean

WINTER UNIFORMS
We presently have some size 4 track tops available to purchase at the uniform shop. A small amount of track pants are also
available to purchase in size 4, 6, 10, 12 and 14.
LOST PROPERTY
Our Lost Property areas are starting to look very populated! Please pop in and have a look through these during the week. The
lost property cupboard is located in B Block in the Prof Hill Campus hallway with 6J on the left and the glass doors to the office on
the right. There is also a box located near 1M at the Kijini Campus and under Wolff Park near the staff toilets. Please remem ber
to name all items of clothing in particular hats, winter jumpers and jackets.

MENU ITEM OF THE WEEK
Aloha! Ham and pineapple pizzas are back on the menu, featuring juicy pineapple, leg ham and our house-made tomato sauce.
They are $4 for a generous-sized slice.
GLUTEN-FREE OPTIONS
We now have a couple of additional options for those students on a gluten-free diet. We are offering crispy chicken rolls on a
gluten-free bun with mayo and fresh salad. We also have gluten-free bread which we can use for our selection of fresh or toasted
sandwiches. All gluten-free items are prepared on a separate surface.
MEET THE TEAM – RACHAEL LANCASTER
The lovely Rachael, Mum to Jordan (Year 2) and Caleb (Prep), is one of our regular volunteers. She is fascinated by science and is
currently studying a Masters in Genetics. When she has time, she likes to dabble in photography. Her favourite meal to cook for
her family is lasagne. It’s a labour of love as she makes everything from scratch – including the pasta sheets!
