Loviisa
Small town, great experiences
Loviisa, an idyllic old port town between Porvoo and Kotka, is less than an
hour’s drive east of Helsinki. The Swedish King Adolf Fredrik was very fond
of the town and named it after his wife, Queen Lovisa Ulrika.
The coastal town of Loviisa has a rich history. The bilingual town has a
remarkable main square surrounded by 19th century stately stone houses
and immediately next to the centre, you will find the old town districts
with their wooden houses, as well as gravel and cobblestone streets. On the
western side, you will find the bold neo-gothic Church, while fortresses built
in the 18th century are on the eastern side. The sea stretches all the way to
the town centre. The Laivasilta area is related to the sailing history of the
region and is characterised by its red salt warehouses, making it a popular
area for meetings and events during summers.
Loviisa has nearly 16,000 inhabitants and it offers a wide range of cultural
sites, rich natural beauty and plenty of activities. Only a short distance from
the Loviisa town centre, you can admire manors and craftsmen’s workshops
in the area of the Strömfors Iron Works. You can also learn about the
interesting past of the area through the historical buildings and fortresses.
The pristine natural environment offers the opportunity for swimming,
picnicking, hiking and fishing, as well as playing golf. The high-quality
accommodations and long list of cultural events optimise a guest’s stay.
Welcome to Loviisa!

Laivasilta –
the Center of Summer Life
The sea dominates life in Loviisa during the four seasons of the
year. This is why this beautiful town with its restaurants and
events attracts visitors from both near and far. The wooden salt
warehouses, which have been turned into restaurants or spaces
that host art exhibitions and small shops, give Laivasilta its
historical atmosphere. The restaurants are open from May 1st to
the end of September and there are events almost weekly.
The sea has affected the history and trade of this port town, as well
as the income of its citizens. The Maritime Museum, located at
Laivasilta, presents the rich sailing history of the region.
The guest harbour has 55 berths, water, electricity, a fuel station,
bicycle rental, a recycling point, a septic tank exhauster, post
box and an internet connection. It is possible to go to the sauna,
take a shower, do laundry and dry up the laundry in the service
building. The Loviisa guest harbour is known for its authentic
and romantic atmosphere. The guest harbour is open daily from
June 1st to August 31st and on request in May and September.

The splendid Österstjernan packet yacht
has been the highlight of Loviisa Laivasilta
since 2006. Österstjernan is a replica
of a sailing ship, which sailed between
Loviisa and Stockholm in the 19th century.
The original Österstjernan was built in
Pietarsaari between 1813 and 1814. The
current Österstjernan is based on the
original ship documents and on a painting
dating back to the 1820s.

Beaches, Islands
and Clean Natural Lakes
The glittering water of the Bay of Loviisa invites you out to sea.
The deep, dark lakes and beautiful river landscapes and rills of
Loviisa also attract visitors. You can set out by yacht, motorboat
or a plain rowing boat.
Along the waters of Lovisa, you will find dozens of fantastic
recreational sites that tempt you to go ashore; there are sandy
beaches, camping areas and campfire sites. For instance, on
the islands Lilla Rövarn, Hautasaari, Ruutikellarisaari,
Kråkholmen and Dunkahäll, there are no holiday houses at all.
An interesting site to visit is Harudd, which is surrounded by
nature reserves.

The small and sensitive lakes and ponds of Loviisa are protected
so that only boats equipped with oars or battery-operated engines
are allowed. When going by boat out to sea, you must take into
consideration the protected nesting areas of birds.
6
The shores of Loviisa attract fishermen. Companies specialized in
guided fishing trips operate in the area and they customize their
trips according to the visitors’ needs (see page 49). Other group
activities, meals and sauna can be combined with the fishing trips.
The area also offers accommodations to top off your fishing trip.

The sea fortress of Svartholma, located at the entrance to Bay
of Loviisa, is a sister fortress to Suomenlinna in Helsinki. They
belong to the same defence chain of fortresses. The construction
of Svartholma started in 1748 according to plans made by
Colonel Augustin Ehrensvärd. Most of the work was carried out
in the 1750s.
The Swedish command ended in 1808 when Svartholma
surrendered almost without resistance to Russia. During the
Crimean War in 1855 an English squadron blasted the fortress
and it was left as it was. Starting in the 1960s, it has been restored
under the supervision of the National Board of Antiquities.
Svartholma is a popular visiting destination for the whole family.
You can get there on your own boat as well as on booked or
scheduled boat services. Guided walking tours are available on
the island. Free berths, exhauster for septic tanks, waste points and
campfire sites are available for guests.

Ehrensvärd’s trail
Beautiful and historically interesting
Ehrensvärd’s trail starts from the
fortresses Rosen and Ungern. The
fascinating nature trail, approximately two
kilometres long, offers a unique chance to
find out about the early stages of fortress
building, from stone hammering to the
18th century fortress. In addition to the
interesting construction history, visitors
can admire the rich local flora and birdlife
along the walk. Ehrensvärd’s trail is well
marked. The starting points are the Sports
Pavilion (Urheilutie) and Bastion Ungern
(Ungernintie).
The map is on the info board.

The History of Fortresses
and Brave Soldiers
Bastion Ungern
When heading for Loviisa centre from the east, the first sites you
will encounter are the grand Ungern and Rosen fortresses. They
were built in the 1750s to protect the town. The renovated Ungern
is a popular venue for concerts, events and plays.
Loviisa also offers other interesting fortifications and buildings
built during the fortress era, for instance the Commandant’s
House built in 1755. Nowadays the Loviisa Town Museum is
located in the Commandant’s House.
In Ahvenkoski there are redoubts dating back to the 1700s.
These fortifications were built during the Swedish era to protect
the border check point at the Kymijoki River next to the King’s
Road. Kymijoki River was the border of Sweden and Russia 17431808. The first shots of the Finnish War 1808–1809 were fired
on February 21st in 1808, when the Russian soldiers crossed the
border in Ahvenkoski. A rare arch bridge, Savukoski Bridge, is
also located in Ahvenkoski. You will reach the area through Pyhtää.
10
11
The surroundings of Loviisa Square are architecturally unique. Instead of supermarkets, it is surrounded by 19th century stone buildings.
CEMETERIES
A church in the middle of the street
Visitors can not miss the bold neo-gothic church in Loviisa, since the
impressive building is located at the western gateway of the city centre.
Loviisa Church was built in 1863–1865 and it has served as a road
church for many years. At the Loviisa Church the visitos will be greeted
by a large Christ sculpture raised in the center of the altar. The oldest
attraction in the church is the bible of 1642. It is the first complete bible
written in Finnish. The church celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2015
and in honour of this there are concerts on the 15th every month.
You can admire the interior of the church at 10–15 on Mon–Sat
June 6th–August 8th. Mass on Sundays in Finnish at 12 noon
and in Swedish at 10 a.m.

The new Evangelical Lutheran cemetery was
opened in 1935. The Orthodox cemetery includes
a small chapel, a chasovnya.
The cemeteries are situated close to each other,
on both sides of Myllyharju Ridge.
Historic Buildings and
Neo-Gothic Boldness
Loviisa is known for its peaceful small town character. On the
square, you can experience the relaxing atmosphere that also
continues in the charming and historical lower part of the town.
Loviisa is a fascinating destination for architecture lovers. The
central square is surrounded by 19th century stone buildings. The
Loviisa Town Hall reminds one of the contemporary House of
Nobility in Helsinki, both designed by architect Georg Chiewitz.
We can be grateful to architect Georg Chiewitz for the 19th century
view. Thanks to Elmar Badermann, the German born city architect
of Loviisa, the Old Town and the historical lower district were kept
almost intact. He was a strong-headed man, who saved the town
from most planning mistakes in the wild 1970s.
Several Neo-Romantic buildings, such as the Swedish upper
secondary school “Lovisa Gymnasium” by Magnus Schjerfbeck
represent more modern architecture. The Bus Station, which
represents later functionalism, is also a true pearl.

Art in a Castle and a Museum
at a Commandant’s Home
In Loviisa, you can admire interesting architecture while walking
around town. The impressive Bonga Castle, which was built
during the Russian era, is situated near the church. Bonga Castle
is now the atelier of artist and Professor Riitta Nelimarkka.
From the corner of the square, continue towards the current
library, the former society house. The society house, which was
designed by architect G. Th. Chiewitz in the 1860s, was renovated
to house the library in the 1990s. During the restoration works, the
original ceiling frescoes were revealed.
You can do your own tour with the help of several walking routes that
can be followed with smartphones. Please visit: www.visitloviisa.fi/
en -> Find the best routes. You can buy the guide, “Walking Tour
in Loviisa”, from the tourist office. This guide includes the main
attractions and routes.
Loviisa offers several interesting museums. Do not miss the Forge
Museum at the Strömfors Iron Works area. It represents one of the
first museums in Finland on industrial tradition.
15
The Lower District of Loviisa is a popular tourist site. Old buildings
have been renovated with an eye to respecting local traditions.
It is easy to relax in the historical setting of the Kappeli and its park. It’s the perfect location
for an afternoon tea or dinner. Just let time go by and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.
CRANE PARK
The famous park architect Paul Olsson designed
Crane Park as an extension to the Esplanad
Park as early as 1917. The plan was realized in
the 1930–40s. Crane Park is home to imposing
Petrowskiana poplars. The park with a water
theme is surrounded by fine lindens. The
fountain statue of Crane Park was made by
sculptor Jussi Mäntynen.
Photo: Oiva Ahvonen
For instance sculptor Taisto Huttunen’s piece of environmental
art can be seen in the rock park which has arisen in the
Rantapuisto park in Loviisa. The piece was made from authentic
masonry from the historic bridge in Sävträsk in Liljendal.
16
Next to the rock park there is a playground accessible for
disabled persons. The playhouse in the playground was inspired
by an immensely popular children’s movie about the girls
Jill and Joy. The movie was filmed in Loviisa in 2013.
Old Wooden Houses,
Green Parks
The Old Town, a wood house area adjacent to the town centre, is
a marvellous entity of its own. There you will find a 17th century
building belonging to Degerby Estate. Today the building is home
to restaurant Degerby Gille. Also the historical Lower District
and the Garnison are idyllic wooden house areas where you can
admire the craftsmanship of old masters. All houses have their
own interesting history.
Considering its size, Loviisa has plenty of green parks with
historical interest. Kappelinpuisto Park is one of the largest and
the Esplanad Park divides the centre of Loviisa longitudinally.
The Crane Park is located opposite to the Bus Station and the

HISTORICAL HOUSES
INVITE YOU FOR A VISIT
Private houses of over a hundred years of age open again their doors
to the public on August 29th–30th during the Historical Houses of
Loviisa event. The culturo-historical theme is the spa era in Loviisa.
In honour of the jubilee year the theme echoes Loviisa Town
Museum’s exhibition theme “Spa Era in Loviisa – Young Jean Sibelius“.
The buildings participating in the Historical Houses of Loviisa event
change annually – old acquaintances take a breather, new ones bring
along a fresh breath. There are new renovation and repair sites; old
sites have become charming homes. The national renovation and
traditional building event also includes work exhibitions as well as
the renovation clinic and the traditional expert seminar starring
building doctor Panu Kaila.
The Historical Houses of Loviisa is in fact also the largest concentration of gardens and courtyards open for the public in Finland.
Recycling of old furniture and other objects constitute an integral
part of the event – you can discover treasures at the antique markets,
collectors’ events and in innumerable garden sales. During the event
you can sample delicious local and organic food as well as food served
at the historical houses themselves. You can enjoy art and music.
Therefore it is not surprising that the Historical Houses of Loviisa
has become the largest public event in eastern Uusimaa and it has
been awarded several prizes and recognitions.

The governor of Uusimaa and Turku province, Johan Creutz,
founded the iron works in the westernmost junction of the Kymijoki
River in 1698. Strömfors Iron Works got its name in 1744, when
Jacob Forsell and Anders Nohrström acquired the iron works.
In 1790, the iron works got a new manager, the 31-year-old Virginia
af Forselles, who managed Strömfors Iron Works for almost 60
years. A large part of the well-kept environment and buildings
currently on display at the iron works are from this period.
The Strömfors Iron Works district is characterised by handicrafts.
Life in the centuries-old environment is indicative of the
traditions of the region. The craftsmen work all year at the iron
works and during summer small shops, museums, workshops
and the summer café open their doors.
The iron works district offers a relaxing holiday site all year long
in a historical environment. The area is home to first-class holiday
apartments and the unique hostel Krouvinmäki built of clay. The
Restaurant Ruukinmylly and the Lunch Restaurant Fellmanni are
also open during winter.

Loviisa offers a wide range of fun activities both outdoors and indoors. But did you know that there are also great climbing areas and
one of the best 18-hole frisbee golf courses in southern Finland?
Nearby lakes Särkjärvi and Kukuljärvi offer
a great opportunity to refresh after climbing.
Both of Loviisa’s climbing rocks are located in Ruotsinpyhtää:
Huuhkajavuori, which is near the Kukuljärvi recreation area and
Haukkakallio, which is close to the sandy beach of Särkjärvi. The
Huuhkajavuori climbing routes have upper anchors and most of
the routes are bolted. The routes are short, but you may find some
of them challenging. The other climbing area, Haukkakallio, is located approximately three kilometres from Huuhkajavuori. It is a
large uniform cliff which offers 105 routes. The routes are maintained by the association Släbi ry, which also organises annual rock
climbing courses to anyone interested. The routes are maintained
by the climbing association Kotkan Kiipeilyseura ry, internet address www.kotkankiipeilyseura.fi.
You can play frisbee golf to the south of the town centre.
An 18-hole frisbee golf oasis is located at the Valko sand ridge;
the route takes you through the forest and across the beautiful
hilly and rugged landscape of the sandy ridge. Children, adolescents and adults can practise frisbee throwing, which requires precision. Frisbee golf is one of the best ways to relax and spend time
together outdoors.

Loviisa and Sibelius
belong together
The 150th Anniversary of the great Finnish composer Jean
Sibelius (8.12.1865–20.9.1957) is celebrated in 2015 all over
Finland – including of course in Loviisa, where he spent his summer
at his grandmother’s and aunt’s house during his youth. The sun,
the sea, summer and light filled him with impressions that were to
inspire him for the rest of his life. In this house he composed the
Kullervo symphony in 1892. Today the music institute of Loviisa
can be found in the house.
Sibelius composed a lot of chamber music in addition to the seven
symphonies, a violin concerto, Finlandia and Valse Triste. The main
event of the jubilee in Loviisa is the Loviisa Sibelius Festival,
which focuses on high class chamber music. Over the years, this
traditional festival has brought a number of brilliant world class
stars to the town under the management of artistic director JanErik Gustafsson.
Loviisa Town Museum celebrates the maestro with the exhibition
Young Jean Sibelius, which lasts all summer. Guided tours,
concerts and dance performances are also organized during the
jubilee year.

Rootsinpyhtää Bluegrass & Rendezvous
at the Strömfors Iron Works on June 5th–7th
The festival founded in 1988 brings the best foreign and Finnish
bluegrass bands to town, who together with history aficionados
recreate the life of the European immigrants who took this music to
America. The Strömfors Iron Works is for the 28th time the perfect
setting for the festival.
The European immigrants took their folk music to America where
it developed into “bluegrass” influenced by blues, gospel as well as
other influences. The journey into the roots of bluegrass just feels
right in the original buildings of the 18th and 19th century iron
works. The historical atmosphere is ideal and you won’t need a lot
of imagination to envision the people from northern Europe who

decided to travel overseas.
Welcome to the American musician and traditions festival

grandpa left for America!

The King Comes to Loviisa July 4

The Carolean Armfelt
A play of the Russian occupation of Finland during 1713–1721 and of the commander-in-chief
in the Great Northern War, the Carolean general Carl Gustaf Armfelt of Pernaja
During the event The King Comes to Loviisa of 2015 there will be
a play about “a soldier of fortune and hero of noble peace”, the Ingrian-born Carl Gustaf Armfelt. The play written by Tuovi Putkonen depicts the destinies and everyday life of the Armfelt family
and the inhabitants of the region.
In the background of the events is the era of wrath and persecution of 300 years ago, the Greater Wrath, when Finland was occupied by Russia for seven years. Pernaja, i.e. the region of current
Loviisa, was overrun by the armies during the Great Northern War.
The wealthy fled the occupation to Sweden and the common people buried their belongings and hid in the woods.
General Carl Gustaf Armfelt (1666–1736) was perhaps the most
noted of the Finnish Caroleans, the soldiers of King Charles XII. He
will remain a hero in history, despite him having lost all his battles
and finally having seen all his troops perish in Norway during a
40
tragic return march over the mountains.
The play is a coproduction of the association the Good Citizens
of Loviisa and the Porvoon Teatteri. The première will be in the
centre of Loviisa during the event The King Comes to Loviisa at
2 p.m. on Sunday July 5th. The following show is at Postimäki in
Porvoo at 7 p.m. on July 8th and there will also be a show in Liljendal and a show in Pernaja in autumn. The play is mainly acted
out in Finnish.

This summer roses charm in Loviisa for the fifth time. The gates of rose
gardens in Loviisa are unbolted during the event, and both rosy experiences
and knowledge of roses are available. You can find roses on plates, in pastries
and beverages in cafés and restaurants, as well as in wellness- and gift stores–
not to forget music and art. The beloved actor-painter Gustav Wiklund
contributes by presenting his paintings of the roses in his rose garden.
Children and romantics become enamoured by the interactive fairytale land
in Schillmark park. Princess Briar Rose rules sovereign here, but can also find
the time to join the rose cruise on packet yacht Österstjernan on Saturday.
The event is crowned by the Rose Wedding at Loviisa church at 5 p.m.
on Saturday July 4th. The wedding is open for everybody. The same evening
there will be the Rose Dance at Laivasilta, where the most beautiful rose
gown will be awarded.
