og fortryllende slotte
eventyrets maler, cobrakunstneren Carl-henning pedersen, ville i år være rundet 100 år.
Det blev for nylig fejret på arken med en stor anmelderrost udstilling, der nu kan opleves
på Carl-henning pedersen & else alfelts museum i herning. i lighed med de to museer markerer vi begivenheden på efterårsauktionen med et bredt udvalg af hans kunst – heriblandt
tre malerier fra hustruen sidsel ramsons samling. værkerne har aldrig været i handlen før,
og indtægterne fra salget går til en udvidelse af museet i herning (kat.nr. 704-706).
en anden af årets runde fødselarer er J.F. willumsen. 150-året fejres med 60 af hans ekspressive værker fordelt på efterårsauktionen og en efterfølgende net-auktion. willumsen
står som en af de ubestridte pionerer i moderne dansk kunst, og hans stærke symbolistiske
billedsprog har sikret ham en plads i den internationale kunsthistorieskrivning. man får syn
for sagen med bl.a. det koloristiske værk ”michelle Bourret vander kaal og grøntsager” fra
1943, der har været i datteren anse willumsens eje (kat. nr. 683).
vi har ikke tidligere eksponeret kunst fra den tyske kunstsammenslutning ”gruppe spur”
i så høj grad som nu, hvor vi præsenterer otte værker af de to frontfigurer, heimrad prem
og hans-peter Zimmer. De modtog prædikatet “kunstpolitiske læderjakker” og kom på kant
med 1950’ernes bayerske kulturliv i en grad, så de til sidst vendte deres hjemland ryggen.
i Danmark tog cobrakunstneren asger Jorn de unge tyskere under sine vinger og bidrog til
en udstilling i 1961 på gallerie Birch i indre København (kat. nr. 769-776).
Den internationale designverden har de seneste år haft øjnene rettet mod moderne dansk
møbelkunst og store navne som f.eks. Finn Juhl og hans J. wegner. set i den sammenhæng
står makkerparret ejner larsen & aksel Bender madsen nærmest som et ubeskrevet blad.
Fra 1947 drev de en fælles tegnestue, hvor de tegnede deres karakteristiske design, som
i dag er repræsenteret på museer verden over – fra louisiana i humlebæk til metropolitan museum of art i new york. Der er nu mulighed for at opleve 11 eksempler på deres
sikre fornemmelse for form og håndværk, heriblandt ”metropolitanstolen” fra 1959 (Kat.
nr. 1171).
Det finske fyrtårn alvar aalto gav i 1954 en bryllupsgave til sin ven og kollega, den danske
arkitekt Jean Jacques Baruël. Den bestod i en sjælden grønlakeret ”Bikube-pendel” og en
meget tidlig udgave af aaltos klassiker ”savoy-vasen” i matchende grøntonet glas. De to
effekter var tiltænkt at skulle komplementere hinanden i et interiør og har hidtil været
uadskillelige hos Baruël og hans efterkommere – lige indtil nu, hvor de udbydes separat på
vores auktion (kat.nr. 1144 og 1145).

Birds on the wing, mysterious masks
and enchanting castles
Fairytale painter, the CoBra artist Carl-henning pedersen would have been 100 this year.
The anniversary was recently celebrated at arken museum of modern art with a major,
critically-acclaimed exhibition, which now can be experienced at Carl-henning pedersen
& else alfelts museum in herning. like the two museums, we will be marking the event
at the autumn auction with a wide selection of his art, including three paintings from the
collection of his wife, sidsel ramson. The works have never previously been put up for
sale, and proceeds from the sale will go towards the expansion of the museum in herning
(cat.no. 704-706).
another important anniversary this year is that of J.F. willumsen, whose 150th anniversary
is being celebrated with 60 of his expressive works at the autumn auction and a subsequent
online auction. willumsen is considered one of the undisputed pioneers of modern Danish
art, and his strong symbolist imagery secured him a place in international art history. you
can see why in, for example, the colouristic work “michelle Bourret vander kaal og grøntsager” (michelle Bourret watering cabbages and vegetables) from 1943, which has been in
the ownership of his daughter anse willumsen (cat. no. 683).
we have not previously featured art by the german artistic collaboration “gruppe spur”
to the extent we are now, with no fewer than eight works by two of the leading figures of
the group, heimrad prem and hans-peter Zimmer. They were labelled “art-political rockers”
and were at such odds with the Bavarian cultural scene in the 1950s that they eventually
turned their backs on their country. in Denmark, CoBra artist asger Jorn took the young
germans under his wing and paved the way for an exhibition at gallerie Birch in central
Copenhagen in 1961 (cat. no. 769-776).
The eyes of the international design world have been focused on modern Danish furniture in
recent years, and big names such as Finn Juhl and hans J. wegner. seen in this context, the
duo ejnar larsen & aksel Bender madsen are something of a blank sheet. From 1947, they
shared a pratice, where their distinctive design took form. Today, it is represented in museums
all over the world – from louisiana in humlebæk, north of Copenhagen, to the metropolitan
museum of art in new york. eleven examples of their keen sense of form and craftsmanship,
including the “metropolitan Chair” from 1959 (cat.no. 1171), can now be experienced.
in 1954, Finnish beacon alvar aalto bestowed a wedding gift on his friend and colleague,
the Danish architect Jean Jacques Baruël. it consisted of a rare green, lacquered “beehive”
pendant lamp and a very early version of aalto’s classic the “savoy vase” in matching greentinted glass. The two items were designed to complement one another in an interior, and
have so far been inseparable in the homes of Baruël and his descendants – until now, when
they are being offered as two separate lots at our auction (cat.nos. 1144 and 1145).

p. 266-267. Rare smaller variant of the lamp designed for the main hall in the University of Århus.
"The shape of the lamp is geometric intended so
that all exposed surfaces of the spiral was affected
by light in the same angle and reflecting it out into
the room under the same conditions". The making
of the spiral-shaped shade, which acts as if it
was drawn in one long stroke, was monstrously
difficult. The subsequent assembly of the lamp was
very time consuming, which consequently made
the lamp very expensive.

Jean Jacques Baruël received the pendant and a very early "Savoy"
vase as a wedding gift from Alvar Aalto at his wedding in 1954.
Since then, the lamp hung over a side table with the vase on top,
so the two could complement each other as Alvar Alto intended
them to. For six years, Baruël was employed by Alvar Aalto in
Finland. They maintained a life long friendship culminating in
their collaboration on Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum.

The works of the architect duo and close personal friends
ejner Larsen & Aksel Bender Madsen have in recent years
been overshadowed by the major international interest in names such as Finn Juhl, Hans Wegner, and Poul
Kjærholm. Yet within the pool of danish Modern, their
work exemplifies the best of the period. They were responsible for creating pieces that united a modern, unmistakably nordic look with an unsurpassed understanding of
traditional craftsmanship.
From 1947 to 1966, the duo collaborated with master cabinetmaker Willy Beck and, together at the annual copenhagen cabinetmakers´ guild exhibition, they consistently
presented works that, though retaining a clear identity of
their own, remain timeless today.
one could argue that only they and Hans J. Wegner truly
managed to combine the theories behind the works by
Kaare Klint with the poetry of the works of Finn Juhl.

The table is derived from the "PK-43" and "PK-44" tables designed in 1956, and was designed specifically
for Gunnløggson's house in Rungsted, circa 1959.
The coffee table is derived from the "PK-61" table designed in 1956. The steel profiles on this table differ
from the "PK-61" as they are both wider and thicker. It
was designed specifically for Gunnløggson's house in
Rungsted, circa 1959.

stained wood. Manufactured by e. Kold christensen.

Provenance: Previous owner was a production manager
at E. Kold Christensen for 24 years. The dining table
was used as a lunch table at E. Kold Christensen.
Numerous lunches were enjoyed by Poul Kjærholm,
Ejvind Kold Christensen and the other personnel at
this table. The three-legged steel frame design was
derived from a prototype coffee table designed by
Kjærholm in 1952. The dining table was also a predecessor of the "PK-54" table, designed in 1963. The
three-legged frame was thus experimentally paired
with the circular marble top. However, the frame could
not carry the heavy top, and the iconic cubic frame was
hence designed.

steel frame. seat and back upholstered with original,
patinated cognac coloured leather. Manufactured
and marked by e. Kold christensen.
Provenance: Previous owner was a production manager
at E. Kold Christensen for 24 years.
This prototype differ from the later model put into production in that the distance between front and hind legs
is shorter, and the leather beneath the seat is fitted with
metal clasp. The overall proportions differ as the prototype appears with a higher seat.
