GEORGE-DANIEL DE MONFREID
(1856-1929), PAINTER & FAITHFUL FRIEND
OF THE MIDI
Narbonne museums present an unprecedented showing of
drawings & paintings by George-Daniel de Monfreid, including
five canvasses on loan from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. Born in
New York in 1856 he came to the Pyrénées-Orientales in 1863.
He studied in Switzerland then Montpellier before dedicating
himself to painting from 1872. In 1877 he showed his works at the
"Salon de Toulouse" & in the same year at the French artists salon
in Paris. His union with Amélie Bertrand produced a son, Henri
(writer). Very close to Gaugin, he was also friends with Verlaine,
Maillol, Bausil, Fayet, Degas, Déodat de Séverac.

IN SITU 2016 HERITAGE & CONTEMPORY ART
"POUR MAX", WORK BY TJEERD ALKEMA
Born in 1942 in Holland the sculptor Tjeerd Alkema, has lived in France since
1963. Trained at the "Ecole des Beaux Arts" in La Haye & then Montpellier
he has progressively channelled his work towards the monumental, using
a process that we can describe in a simple way as anamorphosis. As part of
the 5th edition of IN SITU, Heritage & Contemporary art, a large white sculpture
executed in wood & resin, is installed in the place of honour in the Archbishop’s
Palace. Anamorphosis plays with our visual perceptions & we become actively
involved in the perspectives created by Tjeerd Alkema. The artist incites us to
develop our own ideas about his work & to constantly question the different
angles & views.
Archbishop’s Palace, Cour d’Honneur. Free entry.

VLADIMIR SKODA
"ACCÉLÉRATION D’ESPACE"
Born in Prague in 1942, Vladimir Skoda has lived & worked
in Paris since 1968. His works of art are inspired by his
interest in science & particularly in astronomy. Since the
90s Skoda’s work is oriented around the sphere in which
he explores all variations & possibilities, (from a soap
bubble to examples of monumental sculpture through
to a floor made of marbles). He is equally interested
by steel as a material, which he leaves in a raw
state, uses as a support for non-Euclidean
geometric forms or polishes to create
mirrors. The sphere, a quasi-perfect
form is open to many interpretations.
This depending on whether we are
attached to its formal perfection
or to the images of the world it
reflects. References to astrology
are multiple in Skoda’s work
from Foucault’s pendulum, to
Galileo, though distanced from
them by the artist’s approach.
He draws on the aesthetic
& intuitive as opposed to the
purely academic. His exhibition
at "L’aspirateur" (the vacuum
cleaner) Art gallery reunites
Skoda‘s works from different eras
(1986 to 2016) & includes pieces in
raw steel or polished to a mirror finish.
Certain of the installations have been
specially created for the gallery event.

GENÈSE, L’ART
DES PREMIERS
AUSTRALIENS
(GENESIS THE ART OF
THE FIRST AUSTRALIANS)
The exhibition is a graphic
contemporary representation
of a culture, which has been
uninterrupted for over
50.000 years. These works
are the expressions of their
cultural & social world & emphasise the intimate spiritual
relationships the Aboriginal
people have with their earth,
their source of identity. They
also express the social rules
they are subjected to, to ensure the balance between the
spiritual (the time of Genesis)
& the modern, material world.
In their thoughts, only this balance & harmony can ensure
their survival.

"L’ATELIER DES PAYSAGES",
PIERRE VACHER

"École Supérieure des Arts Modernes" in

paintings show off the most vibrant palette
of colours. His forms are often linked to
the sky as if to invite us to contemplate an
imaginary world. This graphic, landscape
artist likes to reveal a variety of themes
from the figurative to the abstract.

OF A MEDIEVAL MARKET TOWN
Guided by a lecturer, a tour through the art
& history of the town helped by the new
brochure "Parcours en Bourg" which is
available for free at the Tourist Office in the
Archbishop’s Palace. From the 12th century
onwards, Narbonne developed its drapery
trade thanks to land & sea trading routes.
With the beautiful facades of its dwellings, it’s
churches, bridges, little streets & monuments,
the Bourg neighbourhood is situated on the
right bank of the Aude. The river flowed
through Narbonne until the 15th century & this
area shows us the other side of the medieval
town, that of craftspeople & the bourgeoisie,
the time that archbishops, viscounts & consuls
shared power.
> From July 12 th to August 23 rd , at 3pm
SAINT-JUST AND SAINT-PASTEUR
CATHEDRAL AND IT’S TERRACE
A comprehensive visit of the Narbonne cathedral, which is a major

in Europe & impressive organ, the cathedral has an awe-inspiring

a genuine terrace from which a panoramic view of the city extends
to the Pyrenees.
In case of strong winds, the visit will be replaced by
a visit to the treasury.

GUIDED THEATRICAL VISIT
"A CANAL TO SAVE NARBONNE"
Since antiquity & until the 19th century, the
town of Narbonne has owed its prosperity to
its status as a port. It became a privileged
crossroad for commerce between the Toulouse
region & the Mediterranean world. Over the
centuries however, the Narbonne people have
had to fight against the capricious River Aude
& the silting-up of its mouth. In the 17th century
new hope emerged with a canal project to
link the Atlantic to the Mediterranean: the
"Canal Royal en Languedoc" named during
the revolution "Canal du Midi". This year we
celebrate the 350th anniversary of the canal.
A funny, theatrical visit, promises a super
family outing to discover the busy history of the
town over the centuries!
Meet at the Archbishop’s Palace, salle des Consuls.
> Thursday July 21st at 4pm
