Hydro-Float® Critical Care Flotation Bed Pad
Hydro-Float® Critical Care Flotation Bed Pad
For the Prevention and Management of Decubitus Ulcers
Product Description:
The Hydro-Float® Flotation Bed Pad is an efficient
yet inexpensive approach to flotation therapy for
patients who are confined to bed. The Hydro- Float®
Flotation Bed Pad significantly reduces tissue
pressure, temperature and shear in the areas of the
scapula, olecranon, greater trochanter and ischium.
How the Hydro-Float® Flotation Pad Works
Figure 1. Pad Temperature Comparison12
The supply of blood to tissue over bony prominences of the seated patient is
compromised due to the pressure of the weight of the body. Distributing this
weight over a greater weight-bearing surface reduces the pressure on tissue
over bony prominences and increases the supply of blood to the endangered
tissue. The Hudson Hydro-Float® Flotation Pad provides the lowest counterpressure available (see Fig. 2), and at the same time reduces skin temperature,
reducing metabolic demand (see Fig. 1).
A rise of one degree centigrade in temperature
causes a ten percent increase in tissue metabolic demand. A wheelchair or bed pad which
reduces skin temperature decreases metabolic
demand and therefore reduces ischemic tissue

damage. The Hudson Hydro-Float® Flotation Figure 2. Pad Temperature Comparison

The two-piece Hydro-Float® Flotation Bed Pad
easily snaps together and accommodates all
standard hospital beds when used in conjunction
with a leveling pad. It may be cantilevered or
trendelenburged without loss of efficiency and
may be cleaned with soap and water or disinfectant.
The Hydro-Float® Flotation Pad employs the same
principles of pressure reduction as does the
Hydro-Float® Flotation Pad and Commode Pad.
Here too, construction of the flotation bed pad is
comprised of a fluid saturated mass loosely
covered with a heavy-duty, thin nylon material. A
one-piece Hydro-Float® Bed Pad is also available.
