Our Mission
To provide children facing adversity
with strong and enduring, professionally
supported 1-to-1 relationships that
change their lives for the better, forever.
Our Vision
That all children achieve success in life.
About Us
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin matches children
who are facing adversity with caring adult mentors. The focus of the
program is on developing a strong friendship between the child and
the volunteer. This friendship then becomes the basis of impact on
the child, providing the child with a caring adult who they can talk to
and trust. The volunteers (Bigs) are there to help guide the children
and help keep them on the path to success in life.
In 2013....
“I hope he has gained a new perspective
on what can happen and what is possible
in life...I hope I have
made him realize
there is a better life
out there, and that
he puts more effort
into school and good
things will happen to
him.”
- Big Brother Loren

2013 In Review
Menomonie holds first Start Something Breakfast
On Friday February 8th, 2013 the Dunn County Branch of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern
Wisconsin hosted the first Start Something Breakfast to raise funds to support mentoring in Dunn
County. About 30 people were in attendance and nearly $6,600 was raised in donations at the
event and pledged over the next 5 years. Brandon Casto, Menomonie Advisory Committee Chair,
hosted the event; Mayor Randy Knaack talked about the importance of mentoring in Menomonie
and Arla Falk discussed how Big Brothers Big Sisters was an important part of her family and how her
children benefited from the program.
Bowl for Kids’ Sake raises $248,000!
2013’s Awesome 80’s Bowl for Kids’ Sake saw the largest growth in Bowl for Kids’ Sake yet, raising
about 33% more than 2012! Over 1,100 bowlers participated throughout Baldwin, Chippewa Falls,
Eau Claire, Hudson, Menomonie, & River Falls. Bowlers really enjoyed the theme, dressing up in
everything 80’s from neon attire to 80’s game shows, arcade games to tv shows, and more!
We expanded to the Northwoods!
As of June 15, 2013 we acquired the Northwoods region that was previously served by Big Brothers
Big Sisters of the Northwoods. The previous agency approached us to acquire the service area in
order to reduce overhead and administrative costs and to provide enhanced mentoring services
for the families and volunteers. This process began in September 2012 with discussions between
the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Northwoods Board of Directors and our Board of Directors.
In December 2012 our Board of Directors voted to move forward with the acquisition of the new
service territory including: Price, Taylor, Oneida, and Vilas counties. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the
Northwoods officially dissolved June 15, 2013 and we began services.
St. Croix Valley Summer Picnic
The St. Croix Valley annual summer picnic was the largest in our history. This annual event
is sponsored by the River Falls Fire Department gave matches and families an opportunity to
celebrate the impact of Big Brothers Big Sisters through prizes, good food, and fun. A special
treat was the fire truck the River Falls Fire Department brought in for tours. Matches even got to
try on the fire fighter gear - this was definitely a big hit with attendees.
Winter Blast draws more than 150 people
The annual Winter Blast was hosted by the Big/Little Activities Committee and drew the
largest crowd in 2013. The event was held at the UW-Eau Claire Davies Center where
volunteers, children, and family members enjoyed pizza and veggies. Attendees decorated
holiday cookies, played bingo, toured the building with a scavenger hunt and were
entertained by the Innocent Men and a magician.

Big Couples
Husband and wives can volunteer together in our
Community-Based program. Together they are matched
with a child (boy) in the area. This allows couples to get
involved together and make a difference in a child’s life.
“I really kinda wanted a Big Brother because my
dad wasn’t a big role model in my life and my mom
thought it would be good if I had a role model.”

The Community-Based mentoring program is how the agency started and continues to be the
largest program. Community-Based mentoring is offered in all of the communities served by our
agency. Bigs and Littles spend time together each week at a time that works for everyone’s
schedules (usually evenings and weekends). They spend their time together doing activities
they both enjoy, some activities include: going to ball games, fishing, hunting, crafts, baking,
volunteering, watching movies, and more!

Site-Based mentoring is a relatively new program where the child and the volunteer meet at
a specitic location on a set day and time. There are currently three site-based mentoring
programs: Lunch Buddies, Club Buddies (in Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls), and the UWRiver Falls Friends Program.
