WELCOME TO SUMMER AT TRINITY
Welcome to summer at Trinity! And with it comes a wealth of things
to savour on those (hopefully) warm, sunny evenings. We truly have
something for everyone young and not-so-young with inspiring and
moving plays, musical events, operas, and comedy. As well as all that
we have over thirty films including summer blockbusters, beautiful
costume dramas and stunning foreign stories which are bound to pull
you into some truly magical worlds. Trinity is the place to come if you
want to be inspired, laugh and dream! Why not become a Friend if
you aren’t already? If you do, you will get ticket discounts and priority
booking - amongst other benefits - and support us in the process!
John Martin
Artistic Director
One of our key priorities is to encourage and enable young people to
engage in the arts and to this end we have some brand new courses
that provide exciting opportunities for them during the school holidays.
One of the joys of the summer is that our garden becomes an oasis of
calm in the middle of Tunbridge Wells. Our Bar & Café extends to the
Trinity Terrace where you can enjoy coffee, cakes, lunch or stop by for
a quiet drink before an evening performance.
Above all, a sincere thank you to our audiences, friends, volunteers,
funders and sponsors who continue to support us – it truly is
overwhelming and allows Trinity to continue to bring such a diverse
range of events to Tunbridge Wells. Please continue to do that as
without this we won’t be able to develop and grow and realise our
ambitious plans. If you want to extend that support further why not
consider our Friends Plus scheme?
As ever I welcome your views and suggestions - so please feel free to
email me – [email protected]

Opening with what is arguably the most exciting of all operatic overtures,
Rossini’s final opera helped to lay the foundations of the genre of French

Austrian occupation led by the Swiss archer and patriot Guillaume Tell: in the
opera’s most famous scene, Tell shoots an apple from his son’s head, a feat

suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her wilful spirit; Frank
Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome, reckless sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a
prosperous, mature bachelor. Thomas Hardy’s timeless story explores the nature of love and the
human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.

psychodrama tells the story of a model Swedish family - handsome businessman Tomas, his

one lunchtime at a mountainside restaurant when an avalanche turns everything upside down and
Tomas makes a decision that will shake the family’s world to its core…

go terribly awry, forcing him, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and the

Samba

TBC | 120mins | French | Olivier Nakache, Eric Toledano
In this winning comedy drama from the makers of The Intouchables, Samba Cissé (Omar Sy) is a
migrant to France washing dishes for a living. A bureaucratic slip-up lands him in detention, where
he meets Alice (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a rookie immigration worker unused to the hard realities of
life on the bottom rung. When Samba is slapped with a deportation order, Alice and he are drawn
together by both their similarities and their notable differences.
Queen And Country
Sun 28 Jun 5pm
TBC | 115mins | John Boorman
This hilarious follow-up to Hope And Glory (1987) picks up the story as Bill (Boorman’s alter-ego)
begins basic training in the early 1950s. Bill and trouble-making army mate Percy never get near
Korea, but engage in a constant battle of wits with the Catch-22-worthy Sgt. Major Bradley, while
their aptly-named superior, Major Cross, is played by Richard E. Grant. A superb ensemble cast
supports this wonderfully funny, often moving depiction of post-war England.
Rosewater
Sun 28 Jun 8pm
15 | 103mins | Jon Stewart
This directorial debut from Daily Show host Jon Stewart is based on the true story of IranianCanadian journalist Maziar Bahari (Gael Garcia Bernal). Detained by Iranian forces in 2009 after
revealing footage of political unrest to the BBC, he is blindfolded and interrogated for 118 days
in Evin prison on the flimsy suspicion of spying. The result is a psychological war between the
prisoner and a captor whose only distinguishing feature is the scent of rosewater.
The Good Lie

12A | 110mins | Philippe Falardeau
After their village is destroyed and their parents killed by militia, Sudanese orphans Theo, his
siblings and other survivors make an arduous journey to a Kenyan refugee camp. Thirteen years

(Reese Witherspoon), who is charged with finding them jobs, but seeing how adrift they are in
contemporary America, she endeavours to help them rebuild their shattered lives.
A Royal Night Out
Tue 7 Jul 8pm
TBC | TBC | Julian Jarrold
Fictionalised version of the princesses’ adventures on VE Day, with Canadian actress Sarah Gadon
as the young Elizabeth, and British rising star Bel Powley as Margaret. We watch them gambling in
Soho, drinking champagne with strangers and partying at the Ritz. There even appears to be a whiff
of romance for Elizabeth with a dashing commoner. Co-starring Rupert Everett as King George VI
and Emily Watson as Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
The New Girlfriend
(Une nouvelle amie)
TBC | 105mins | French | François Ozon
Wed 8 Jul 8pm
Loosely adapted from a Ruth Rendell tale, this skilfully triangulated psychological thriller about a
woman who learns that the husband of her deceased BFF is harbouring a most unusual secret,
is delectably entertaining and as surprising for its continually evolving (and involving) dynamics
of desire as for its slow-building emotional power. Beautifully controlled performances by Anaïs
Demoustier and Romain Duris.

Between his friends and the family business, Arnaud’s summer looks set to be a peaceful one,
until he runs into Madeleine, as beautiful as she is brusque. He expects nothing; she prepares for
the worst. He takes things as they come, likes to laugh. She fights, runs, swims, pushes herself
to the limit. Given she hasn’t asked him for anything, just how far will he go along with her? A multiaward-winning Gallic love story. Or a story of survival. Or both...

Sue Davis and Jess Levine
Push and Pull
Tue 30 Jun - Sat 11 July
Jess Levine works in oil and mixed media, creating a narrative
and dialogue of creative expression. Her recent work reflects the
season of winter and involves pushing materials to their fullest
potential of mark making and content.
In their creation Sue’s paintings, in oil and mixed media, result
from a playful tension between chaos and order, often inspired
by music and nature. She feels that abstraction encourages
interpretation, inviting the viewer into creative engagement.

Sue Haseltine
Love of the Landscape
Tue 14 Jul – Sat 8 Aug
Sue Haseltine’s work explores her responses to the natural
environment. She says of her work, “ I have a love for the
landscape, which I explore visually through the disciplines
of printmaking and painting. The nature of the materials and
techniques has a strong influence on the resulting image. I
particularly enjoy the limitations presented by printmaking and
experimenting with ways of applying paint.” To develop her work
Sue uses sketches and paintings made ‘en plein air,’ as well as
photography to refer to in the studio.
