B2 - TAKING IT IN STRIDE

e could blame the wind, the sunshine perhaps even the
earth not turning the right way ‘cos we lost our first
game to a team that wasn’t that tough.
We had lost to ourselves that makes us a little frustrated at the end
of the day. Through the loss we were exposed out short comings.
This is actually a perfect time to teach the new players we had this
season from the errors they had.
1st inning, Bears attacking Thornleigh pitcher clearly is a newbie
pitcher and was very unstable with controlling the placement. We
loaded the base and got 2 pts through some more BBs.
Yah. That was the end of a good beginning. The rest of it can
be summed up with few key words, confusion/frustration and explosion. right, the explosion was to do with the thornleigh coach
instructed their player to steal when we were down by 12+ pts. The
kind of verbal discussion was not suitable for people with age less
than 109.
Forget about the scores for now. All that had happened makes me
want to improve and train harder to get back at them. For now I am
willing to accept the losing position we are at until that day! n

rand Final - It’s not much fun doing
a match report for a game that you
didn’t win, especially a Grand Final.
Still it was a great game. As a team we
gave it our all, fighting back from 2-7
down after 2 innings, to tie things up at 7-7
after 9 innings and nearly 4 hours of high
quality baseball. We made only 2 errors in
the field.
Memorable plays of the day:
Millsys diving catch, Stefanos triple, double play from the knock down slow roller
to 2nd base, the usual Rick to G pickoff at
2nd, Jimmy throwing out an attempted stolen base at 2nd, patient batting (15) BB’s,
Jimmy single to left field that scored 2 and
tied the game up in the 9th. I’m sure there
were more memorable plays, but I can’t remember them. Rick Spesh was outstanding
today, coming in with the pressure on and
not allowing a run until the tie breaker. (not
the best way to win or lose a game). In the
end the 21 LOB killed us, but congrats to
Rangers who had the wood on us in Winter
2010.
Some highlights of the season for me were:
New Bear Ben Leffler joining the team.
Lee smiling even when he gets a dodgy
call. Finally getting to play a season with
Nate... having a rookie in the team is a
rarity in A Grade. Whilst Tets is not new
nor a rookie, it was the first time we had
played together... his passion for the game
and his level head were invaluable, not to
mention his hitting. Speaking of invaluable experience, there’s JK, Millsy, Slobbo, Trav, Stefano.
Thanks again to Erica for keeping the
best scorebook in the league, and little
Seb for his beautiful smile.

WINTER E1’s
WHAT A SEASON!!

1 - The E1 Bears had, what could
only be described as, a great season! A combination of age, beauty
and skills had us winning a significant
proportion of our matches (XX from YY)
- enough to get us through to the Grand
Final which, unfortunately, was not one of
the matches we won. However, when we
reflect on the season it was clear to see that
the E1 Bears enjoyed their baseball and enjoyed playing together. There was a harmony across the team which is often difficult
to come by. On and off the field, the Bears
were a true team.
As is the case when you have a champion
team it is difficult to single out players for
special mention because, on any given day,
we had a number of stars. So a few words
about everyone are in order.
Michael Cudmore: MC was our steward
through the season and generally made sure
we all knew what we were doing - quite a
challenge!! He used his engineering background to benefit the rest of the team by
coming up with the novel, but highly effective, idea of drawing a diagram with players’ names in the appropriate position. This
was an efficacious method to ensure that
the number challenged players in the team
knew where they had to be on the field.
Vicky Benko: her skill in herding cats
was called into play throughout the season
to get us organised. But organised we were
- there was not a match in which we didn’t
have beer!! Vicky was outstanding at first
base throughout the year. She was often
put under pressure by the throws from the
in-field but she always managed to rise (or
fall) to the challenge.
Clay Arnold: week in week out, Clay
would put on the catcher’s gear and perform
miracles behind the plate as he contemplated who was pitching at him and what they
were likely to pitch. He quickly gave up
signalling to the pitchers as he realised his
signals had no bearing on the actual pitch
he received.
Darren Rutgers: generally a reserved sort
of a guy, Darren transformed into a demon
as soon as the ball was put into his hands
and he was shown the mound. Darren won

and saved a number of games throughout
the season with his pitching - the most
memorable instance being the Preliminary
Final in which we came from a 10-3 deficit
to win the game. He was just a little handy
with the bat as well!!
Roger Pye: juggling baseball and a very
demanding profession is very difficult.
Roger showed that it is not impossible.
Unfortunately he wasn’t able to be at all
matches because of his work commitments
but when he was there he made his presence
felt. We could always count on Roger to
take a couple of catches and have a couple
of hits whenever he played.
Arthur Richardson: the elder statesman
of the team by a significant margin, Arthur
showed that age doesn’t necessarily weary.
His first hit in the season was a three bagger. On the day after he came back from
his self-indulgent, hedonistic, 4 week odyssey to France, his first hit again was a three
bagger. He was heard to say: “it’s all about
visualising”
Craig (Spud) McQuillen: returning to the
baseball diamond after a foray into football
(which demonstrated to him that he is better off playing the small ball game), the E1s
profited from his broad baseball experience
and equally keen sense of humour. At the
start of the season Spud moved with great
difficulty because of the injury he sustained
whilst playing that other game. By the end
of the season he mover with the grace of a
gnu. Who will ever forget the way he ran
when he hit his three bagger??
Tony Matthews: when one thinks of
Tony one thinks of Jim Morrison. Tony
(aka Mr Mojo Risin’) would smack the
ball with impunity and take great catches
at centrefield. His team spirit was wellevidenced when he played a couple of
matches even though he was not well, but
knew that the team would be short if he
didn’t play. What a man!
Rob Loosli: In a team of extroverts,
exhibionists and dilettantes it is often
difficult for someone, who is by nature
somewhat more reserved, to get a word
in edgeways. Rob’s presence was demonstrated more in actions than in words.
Rob “owned” left field and assisted in
a number of rundowns due to his very
strong arm. His arm also helped the team
a number of times when he closed matches for us. Rob was also the keeper of the
team stats - a role that he performed efficiently and accurately(although the writer
thinks he might have missed a few of his
hits and RBIs!!).
Stuart (Foca) Pike: Foca demonstrated
an uncanny ability to hit the ball regardless
of where it was pitched. His speed in the
field was second to everyone, his sense of
humour legendary and his contribution to
the team significant. Yet, with all this going for him, he upped stumps (the writer is
not familiar with the baseball equivalent of
this expression) and went to China halfway
through the season. Having said that he
did keep in contact with us and was keen to
know how we played each week.
Nick Dandy: another all rounder in the
team, Nick was masterful with the bat, quick
in the field at short stop and showed he was
more than useful when we needed a back
up pitcher. He also demonstrated his commitment to the team by putting his body on
the line in tagging a runner. Unfortunately
for Nick (and for the team), although he got
the runner out, he did come off second best.
But he still picked himself up to play in the
grand final.
Tanya Smart: Tanya is another example
of how skills can be transferred in the move
from softball to baseball. After she became
used to the fact that the ball was a little
smaller than she was used to, she started
getting hits in most matches and made it
home on a number of occasions. There
were a couple of instances in which we
were tempted to call upon her legal knowledge and skills as we discussed some of the
finer points of the rules with the umpires
and opposing coaches. Tanya must have
found baseball very amusing because she
was always smiling when she played.
A final word to thank the players
form the E2 team always stayed back
to watch us play and who always provided great encouragement to us (some
of which is printable!) n

WINTER B2’s
Same Same
but Different!!

2 - Overall it was a reasonably successful season for us but getting
smashed in the first final to a side
we beat both times during the regular season did leave a sour taste in our mouths, and
I still think about it nearly every day.
At our best we where pretty to watch,
played some very solid ball and had days
when our bats could do no wrong. At our
worst it’s fair to say we where %#@^ house,
some days we seemed to be chasing bloopers or miss hits that found gaps that weren’t
even there and it didn’t matter how hard
we tried, we couldn’t do anything right.
Our batting was indicative of our season,
one game everybody hit and the next time
hardly anybody hit, it didn’t matter what the
pitching was like, we hit the best pitching
one week and couldn’t hit the worst pitching the following week.
Ed Blackall was our main pitcher and
when he hurt his shoulder / arm two thirds
of the way through the season, it proved to
be the turning point for us as it hurt us badly.
From then on we had to have plenty of offence and runs every week and that proved
a bit too much for us particularly in the final
which was basically over after the first dig.
On the positive side it was a pleasure to play
with these guys as they are a great bunch
of guys, always out there to win but at the
same time understand we aren’t playing for
sheep stations and at the end of the day we

have some fun and a lot of laughs.
There were plenty of highlights from the
season, Ed Blackall, Eddie “Allstar” Allardice, Alex Offenstadt and John “JB” Bennett

all finished with great averages at the plate,
Peter Hall bombed the ball all season long,
and Tony “Chief” Callanan had one of our
most vital hits, a 2 out none on shot that
started a come from behind rally that got
our season going. Mark “Mooey” Davis
one of our better hitters was fantastic in the
field, outfield or shortstop it didn’t matter,
it was a certain out. His play to catch a fly
ball in right field and throw to home to
force the tying run back to third in a vital
game against Greenway was special. Not
sure if Phil “Butch” Hunt thought this was
a highlight but Butch plays in left field a
lot and every game I’d look at the sun and
there it was, streaming straight into the left
fielders eyes.
In the final the sun was shocking so half
way through he moved to second were he
took a great catch from a grass cutter that
was never anymore than a couple of inches
off the ground. First time he’d seen the ball
all season without the sun in the background.
A new recruit for us Dave Walsh has to be
the quickest “old” recruit I’ve ever seen, in
terms of scoring once on base he lead our
team. It does help if you can steal second
and third just about every time without getting thrown out. Probably the highlight play
of the season belongs to Jason Richardson,
he was playing shortstop and took a catch
over his right shoulder running backwards
and sliding at the same time, somewhere
between right field, centre field and second
base, and it was a remarkable catch and
would have won the ESPN top 10.
A lot of laughs and our share of wins, Same

WINTER D2’s
2010 Winter wrap

rtoo D2 - We finished the regular
season in 2nd place, one game out
of first and one game ahead of the
fifth placed team. We were defeated in the
preliminary final by the eventual premiers,
Wests Boomers #5.

I am pleased to report that they mostly

It was a season replete with the thrill of
victory and the agony of defeat. There
is nothing quite like the feeling of being
up to your neck in a tight competition
with talented teammates who are also
good friends. Before I introduce the
band, I’d like to thank some important
contributors off the field. The Treseder
family attended nearly every game and
provided much appreciated encouragement. Stoney’s wife Margaret Holz
scored for us over most of the season
and provided the factual basis for our
team stats and my quirky post-game
observations. Kristian Cruz published
these post-game summaries in the Bear
Pause and added some inspired graphic
images. Stephen and Izaac Foster from
the North Ryde D1 team played in two
games for us when we were shorthanded, and Mrs Foster kept score in one
of those.
Tom Buckle and Andrew Stone were
tied for the highest batting average
(.500). Tom led the slugging with .727
and Stoney had an absurd on base per6
our catcher Simon Treseder. Simon’s
impact on this team was immense. He
caught every game but one, letting
nothing past--wild pitches, overly ambitious base runners. I was reminded
of Gandalf stopping the Balrog at the
bridge of Khazad Dum--but I digress.
Simon was successful at getting into
the hitters minds, calling just the pitch
they didn’t want to hit. He also led the
team in stolen bases (12) and being hit
by pitch (5). He was in a league of his
own on the HBP statistic.
Hugo Smart’s work in Centerfield
was much appreciated by a pitcher who
is normally plagued by Texas league
hits, speaking of which Hugo’s knack
for reaching base on them returned late
in the season, lifting his batting average to .304 despite a slow start. Ian
Burgess was solid all season in Left
Field. Burgo struggled to find batting
form, but has turned hitting between
3rd base and the third baseman into a
fine art. David Harding returned for
the first half of the season, but was
sidelined by the responsibilities of fatherhood. Still, in his time with us he
managed to bat .438, slug .625, crank
out a game-tying hit or two, and impersonate Ricky Ponting (only to get
called for batting out of the box).
The new guys made a huge difference
this year. Craig Wagner played 3rd
base like Baryshnikov, and got some of
the longest hits we had this year, including our only triple. Craig was also
our team’s closer, bringing controlled
fury to opposition batters who were
hoping for an easier time at the pitching change. He asked me to mention
that he led the team in reached on error.
This oft-pooh-pooed statistic is a valid
indicator of how hard the ball has been
hit, so I attach some importance to it.
Second on this stat was Edward Smart.
Ed had a stellar season at bat with a
.412 average. Playing Right Field he
turned an unusual 9-3 play to rob the
RE4 team of a hit, and nearly repeated
the feat on the next batter. Our rookie
of the year (in fact our only rookie)
was Harry Clarke, who played Shortstop and led the team in hits. Batting
.471, his 16 hits were twice as many
as any other player apart from slugging
leader Tom Buckle. That a player can
do this in his first season of baseball is
simply remarkable. Harry is also one
of only two players to have played every game this season.
While the new guys impressed, the
battle-scarred warriors certainly did
not disappoint. Damien Treseder at
second base blocked out the pain of a
broken rib to dive for anything nearby.
Late in the season he broke a new rib
doing the same thing. Damien batted
above .300, and made sure our opponents knew we were thinking about
them. Stephen Clarke batted a solid
.364 after a few seasons off and led the
team in sacrifice flies. Importantly,
Stephen led the team in strikeouts with
none. Finally, your correspondent was
the starting pitcher. I would say I batted not too badly for a pitcher, and I
pitched not too badly for a manager. I
won’t go into the ERA, but as a team
we did concede the fewest runs of any
team in the D2 competition during the
regular season, and we scored the second most.
In closing, I’d like to thank the team
for their dedication and buoyant good
will. It’s been lot of fun. n
