CELEBRATING WBT KIDS
Lauren Elias
... age 8 has
raised nearly
$40 to send
to JDRF.
... JOIN - IN !!!
Grandma & Grandpa Barb and Gary Nahey (So.
Shore Drive) have reason to be extra-proud of
granddaughter Lauren. On a recent visit to Mort’s
Candy Store, Lauren saw our JDRF “toilet” bank.
She decided right then that she wanted to do “a
little more” to help raise money for JDRF. Lauren
got busy making colorful bracelets and then went
knocking door-to-door along So. Shore Drive. With
a big smile on her face, she came to the Marina with
$27 in sales and a poster with additional bracelets
to sell at the Marina for the JDRF cause. Lauren
will continue making bracelets so
kids like our grandson, Luke can look
forward to an end of daily fingerpricks and needles! Lauren would
love to have other WBT kids join
her in supporting JDRF by making
bracelets. The wrist/ankle bracelets Our grandson Luke
at age
are made with embroidery floss and -3diagnosed
... now 7 yrs old.

PICNIC in the PARK
AUGUST 22 - SUN - noon to 3p
Garfield Park Pavilion
Fundraiser for Arnell Memorial Humane Society
I remember Alexis Rinde as a little girl coming to the
Marina with mom and dad. Rather than running to
the candy counter for treats, Alexis would head out
looking for our kitties! It didn’t surprise me at all
when Alexis (now a teenager) stopped by to tell us
about a fundraising effort she’s coordinating for the
Arnell Humane Society. Look for the insert in this
issue, and an order form for a picnic basket of ribs chicken or super-subs. The fundraiser (cont. Pg. 2)

I spent a couple hours at DD Kennedy Park last week. The early
morning walk around the park was
a “simple pleasure” that I encourage you to discover & enjoy! (if you
haven’t already!) The DD Kennedy Kathy Mortensen
Environmental Area is 106 acres of 715-497-0200
pristine woodland, open prairie area
and river bottom. Approximately 1-1/2 miles of hiking
trails (blacktopped), a 95’ wooden bridge over the
Balsam Branch waterway, a new dam, fishing
pier, swingset, covered
pavillion, bathrooms,
and an environmental
classroom now exist
on the site. Garden clubs, 4-H clubs, Girl Scouts
and Cub Scouts are among the many groups that
have contributed hours of volunteering preparing the
fields, planting wildflowers and contributing to the
beauty of this Park. Put on your walking shoes, or
throw the kids’ bikes in the van ... bring a picnic lunch
and enjoy an afternoon at DD Kennedy. It’s only a
couple miles away!
DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of Cty. Rd. F
and Cty. Rd. C ... travel North to 130th St. (Home
Base Bar intersection) ... turn North ... at the “T”
(120th Ave) turn left and follow to Kennedy Mill Ave.
Turn left. The environmental center/parking lot is
on the left ... an additional parking/picnic space is
further down the road on the right. ENJOY!

PHANTOMS JULY 31 SPLASH
WE HAVE A WINNER!
We were truly underwhelmed with all three entries in
the Caption The Donkey in the Boat Photo Contest.
Sadly there was one from Jim Rivard we couldn’t use
because…well…it was just too…you know. So the
winner is…from Bear Trap’s Bob Whitman, “BP CEO
exiled to the Gulf.” OK, maybe it wasn’t so hot, but
he does get the freebie ice cream.
OUR READERS ASK…
Wapo’s Phil Logan asks “why are they called the Dog
Days of Summer?” Well, Phil, it’s good you asked because you, of all people, need enlightenment. Back in
the prehistoric days rumor has it that it was called
the Pterodactyl Days of Summer, but there’s no
proof. However back in 1786 when history recorded
this phrase being announced, this time of year was
called the Hippopotamus Days of Summer. But the
American people rebelled because of difficulties in
spelling Hippopotamus, so in 1823, the American
Conference of Sayings changed it to Dog Days. So
there you have it, Phil. Tell everyone you know.
PHANTOM WORD FIND ...
OK…after you’ve found all the words we’ve hidden,
you can start finding words that we haven’t…like
your name. Go for it!

• When a vessel is towing a person on water skis, a
surfboard or other device, the operator must have
another competent person on board to act as an
observer.
• It is illegal to ski while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including prescription drugs.
• A PWC operator may not tow a person on water
skis or other devices unless the PWC is designed and
recommended by the manufacturer to accommodate
at least three people.
• Those towing skiers on water skis or similar towable devices and those being towed must act in a
safe and prudent manner.
- Vessels towing persons may not come within 100 feet of other occupied anchored vessels,
a PWC, a buoy-marked swimming area, or a
public boat landing.
- Persons being towed behind a vessel on water skis , a surfboard, other device or their towing rope may not com4e or allow the tow-rope to come within 100 feet of a PWC.
TIPS:
• Do NOT run parallel to the shore in shallow water
to drop off the towed person. Keep your distance,
and let the towed person swing into shore.
• Turn OFF your engine before approaching closely
to a person who has fallen during a towing activity.
Approach the fallen person with the operator’s side
of the boat so you do not lose sight of the towed
person.
• Before going out on the water, establish communication signals between the operator, observer and
the towed person.

WATER QUALITY ...
what you can do!
Results of the April ‘09 lake property owner survey
clearly indicate that the top concern of lake residents is protecting the lake environment, water
clarity and maintaining the investment value of
properties. If that’s going to happen, homeowners
are going to have to re-think their current waterfront practices and consider doing what it best for
the lakes ... and that means taking on the task of
restoring their shorefronts to a natural state. A
lot of great things can come from this effort ... it
improves wildlife habitat, enhances water quality and
will help our lakes become healthier and more satisfying for everyone.
Abrahamson Nurseries just south of St Croix
Falls on Hwy 35 is offering a class on “NATURAL
SHORELINES” for lakeshore property owners.

WATERFRONT BAR & GRILL
BUFF UP YOUR SHORELINE
Wapogasset and Bear Trap have over 14 miles of
shoreline. Returning manicured shorelines to a more
naturalized habitat should be considered by every
homeowner. The addition of shrubs, native sedges,
grasses, ferns and wildflowers will provide a buffer
from nutrients and sediments that can reach our
lakes through surface water.
Planting early (mid-May to mid-June) or late ...
Mid-August to mid-September is recommended.
The time is right to check out local nurseries for
end-of-season specials. The following native plants
grow well near the lake edge: Swamp Milkweed (pink
flowers) ... Blue Vervain (blue flowers). Moist to dry
soil: Bergamot (lavender flowers) ... Chokecherry,
Big Bluestem ... Dry to Medium: Snowberry (white
flowers/berries). Black-eyed Susan, Big Leaf Aster,
Pennsylvania Sedge & columbine. Call Pat Seidl (see
For Sale ads) to take her up on her offer of Yellow
Iris!
site prep for the “NEW” Bar & Grill
Ray & Pam Johnson are excited to announce the
re-building and re-opening of the Waterfront Bar &
Grill. The concrete will be poured today (July 26)
and the walls will be going up next week. Feel free to
stop by to check on the progress. Pam is excited
about the new layout ... providing a larger seating
area inside ... with additional outside dining. They’re
looking for a possible OCTOBER opening.
A hearty “WELCOME BACK” to Ray and Pam ... and a
heartfelt “THANKS” for bringing back to Wapogasset and Bear Trap the Waterside Bar & Grill!

a series of knots and twists. A quick trip to the
attic provided me with a bag full of embroidery floss
that I’d love to share ... stop by the Marina, pick
out a few favorite colors and start knotting! Then
either go door-to-door, like Lauren did, or bring the
bracelets to the Marina for us to sell. It’s great to
see both WBT kids AND Adults wearing the bracelets and supporting Lauren’s effort to help fight
diabetes! A big “THANKS” from us, from Lauren ...
and from Luke for supporting this fundraiser!
PANFISH SECRETS REVEALED…
The Crappies have been active, chowing down on
minnows this time of year. They’re right there in the
weeds in 8 feet of water. Sunnies have been biting
on leeches. Same scenario…weeds, eight feet. Now
in a rare move, the PHANTOMS are actually going
to reveal WHERE you can find these Crappies and
Sunnies! Get your GPS out and plug in the following
coordinates: N45 degrees 18 .985 and W92 degrees 22 .325. If you find yourself going the wrong
way down a freeway on-ramp, we may have goofed up
a number or two.
WALLEYE WONDERS…
Been wondering about Walleyes? Yep…they’re biting,
too. Jig and a minnow in 15 to 20 feet of water at
dusk. They’ve also been hitting on a trolled deepdiving Fat Rap. Try brown and orange. Remember
they have to be 15 inches, and you can keep 3 in
Wapo and 5 in Bear Trap. And if you catch 5 in Bear
Trap, don’t bring ‘em back into Wapo, or you may be
in trouble with the DNR.
