Original Introduction of Accutron
Why Choose Bulova Accutron?
During the 1950s, Bulova developed the Accutron tuning-fork electronic
movement - the first breakthrough in timekeeping technology in over
300 years.
But Accutron’s commercial production was delayed until the 1960s, because
NASA asked the company to channel its Accutron efforts into making
components for the space program.
Accutron was iantroduced to consumers on October 25,1960, and was the
first watch brand to offer a written guarantee of accuracy to within a minute
a month.
NASA continued to use the technology throughout the ’60s, and on July 20,
1969, Bulova landed on the Moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin placed an
Accutron timer in the Sea of Tranquility to control transmissions of data
to earth.
The original Accutron tuning-fork technology eventually became obsolete with
the invention of even more accurate quartz technology.
In the 1990s, Accutron became a separate brand within the Bulova
Corporation, using the most advanced Swiss technology.
The tuning fork was adopted as the corporate logo, a symbol of the company’s
heritage of innovation.
