Dunkelwerk is a new German one-man project which released its first CD “Troops” on the
Alfa Matrix label from Belgium. It is the first release for this successful label exploring some
darker territories in the Electro/Industrial genre. With the use of uncountable voice samples
of some real happenings out of both world wars and the permanently used themes about
defeat and misery, this project attracted some attention. Time to introduce this band and to
give the floor to the artist to get some clear statements of what’s it all about...
Chain D.L.K.: There seems to be some mystery surrounding Dunkelwerk, Martin, because
all band photos are almost dark and your hands try hard to protect you. So please tell us
something about you and the finding of your project Dunkelwerk...
Dunkelwerk: The music is important, that’s all. I don’t hide my real name but I prefer to
use a pseudonym. It fits better with the concept at least for me. Maybe I will make some
brighter pix in the future but for “Troops” is perfect the way it is. Many moons ago I
decided to try to make some music. I listened to Techno in the past (and I still love it
today!) and this whole club-thing was very interesting for me. The sounds, the beats,
wonderful. But then I heard a :W: track by accident. Dark aggressive beats, catchy melodies
and vocals. Perfect! In 2003 I started Dunkelwerk just for fun. It was a long way to reach
satisfying results. Music-production is a very complex thing. It’s easy to make “a song” but it
is hard to bring everything together. Idea, atmosphere, sound, melody, vocals, technical
quality…sometimes very frustrating. And in the end you will never be loved by everyone.
Ha! Believe me I got some extreme reactions by releasing “Troops” but also an
overwhelming positive feedback from all around this little planet. That’s cool because in the
beginning someone told me that I should expect nothing because most releases are just
drowning in this mass of released CDs…and especially as a newcomer your chances are
very, very small. This scene has its legends already…and there’s not much space for the
second and third row. Very hard to get the chance to start somewhere, to develop
something.
Chain D.L.K.: How did you come to the deal with Alfa Matrix and how much truth lies behind the story about a recommendation through The Retrosic?
Dunkelwerk: This is no promo joke. I sent Cyrus/The Retrosic a demo to get a serious feedback. He said that we should try to offer this material to Alfa Matrix for a
sampler. So Dunkelwerk entered the Cyberl@b sampler and after a long discussion between me and Seba from Alfa Matrix we decided to work together. Cyrus gave me
some important hints and opened the door to Alfa Matrix. Very nice guy.
Chain D.L.K.: Lets talk a bit about your debut “Troops” which received very controversial reactions. I think a total boycott of the German Sonic Seducer magazine was
not what you and your label expected. Tell us a bit about your emotions behind this...
Dunkelwerk: Well, it was clear (at least for me) that “Troops” was and is a very difficult release for the German market. I tried to find a way to deal with this war
theme in a respectful and deliberated way. I make clear statements in the CD booklet and in interviews. I never started to join this old promo game of body pictures,
unclear statements and nebulous suggestions. Overall the German scene understood what Dunkelwerk is about. But of course not everyone likes it and the way I deal
with it. That’s ok. Dunkelwerk reached position 6 in the German DAC charts, very good for a newcomer using this war theme. I never expected such a positive feedback.
The Sonic Seducer defined Dunkelwerk as “bad entertainment” and they decided that there is nothing worth reporting about this project. Feindflug, :Wumpscut:,
Dunkelwerk…all banned by the Sonic Seducer. Who cares? They never talked to me…Maybe they are afraid?
Chain D.L.K.: The main problem which a magazine like the Sonic Seducer maybe had, could be explained in your use of voice samples and artwork taken out of both
world wars 1 & 2. Disregarding all of your explanations you have done in the past on your website or through Alfa Matrix, some people still seem to have fun to start a
witch hunt against you by looking for fascist related stuff. Wasn’t this foreseeable with respect to your artistic freedom? Would you say, that it could be more difficult to
get “Troops” released if you would be signed to a German label?
Dunkelwerk: Of course the problem with Dunkelwerk is the theme and the atmosphere. It’s a very dark album with a real background. It’s not funny or “cool” and I
can also understand people who think that it is not the best way to deal with the German wars by using electronic club music. I only asked one very small German label,
I never asked the big ones. But once again, there is no witch hunt against Dunkelwerk. I could use this Sonic Seducer ban for promotion but this would be lame. I only
reacted with a short statement. They never called me “fascist” or “right wing”. They don’t want to promote an album dealing with such a difficult theme. Funny: they
printed and bought the advert for “Troops” before the ban…this IS lame. We move on!
Chain D.L.K.: “It’s about defeat, not about victory” – so a quotation out of your release info sheet. Please explain clearly this concept. Does your beloved search for
defeats not cramp you in your musical development?
Dunkelwerk: This sentence is very important to explain that “Troops” does not want to glorify war conflicts. You know humans use recognition short-cuts because
most people don’t have the time to discover every new thing and so some need clear simple statements. This whole album is only about defeats, not really a way to
start a militant image. I avoided any glorification. Why should a main theme cramp the musical development? Two different things. Of course it would be boring to have
a second album also dealing with this real war theme…this won’t happen. Defeats? For sure!

Chain D.L.K.: Apart from that ugly fascist reproach, why do you have such a huge interest
in things regarding WW 1 & 2? This is not typical for the EBM/Electro scene generally, is it?
Can defeats not also be found in other current themes? It looks a bit that you calculated
well the risk to get bitched...
Dunkelwerk: Fascist Reproach? So far I have not heard such things… There’s a difference
between “I can’t stand the way you deal with the war theme!” and “You are a fascist!”. Be
careful with such things. I also can’t see that this war thing is typical genre-like. Ok, we
have some “war” in this scene but there are more robots, vampires, angels and devils
around. There’s place for all of them…also for the war theme! Defeats can be found in other
topics for sure. For the first album I used the world wars. But in the end this whole war on
“Troops” is just a metaphor for something personal. There exist frontlines without tanks,
without bombing and troops but full of defeat and sadness… And believe me, “Troops” is
too good and the concept is too clear to get bitched in full effect. I was aware of this risk
and reduced it by not playing the stupid promo games we all know. I knew that this theme
was a risk but I saw no real reason not to deal with it because it makes sense the way I did
it. No need not to use a specific theme but there was a need to treat it in a clear and
unmistakable way.
Chain D.L.K.: “Dresden” could be named here as an example of a reminder of the
happenings at the end of WW2. Did you already come in that situation to have a discussion
on your points of view with someone of the older generation who maybe was involved?
Dunkelwerk: I know people who got lost in the chaos of this dark time. They found a way
back telling tales of defeat, death and misery. I’ve heard things that are hard to believe.
And we all have to pray that such chaos never comes back. I wanted to make a statement
with “Troops” and its real historic background. But I know that some will think that “Troops”
offers the dance tracks for the wrong crowd. Let them dance…maybe some will find out that
the world of Dunkelwerk is not the right place to please a soldiers heart…
Chain D.L.K.: Overwhelming sarcasm we can also discover on the lyrical content of
“Sternensoldat”. Please explain to us the technical side of this track, are these lyrics samples
or is this your own clear voice? How would you review the lyrical additions done by Claus
Kruse of PNE on his remix for this track?
Dunkelwerk: There is NO sarcasm! This is my voice reading an original “Feldpost” letter
which was written some days before the collapse of the Sixth German Army in Stalingrad by
a German weatherman. He tells about his love for the stars. This man found himself in a
total chaos he never wanted to join. He wrote this last words to those he loved and to his
wife…there is no sarcasm only sadness and defeat. Unfortunately his name was not left on
the card. We will never know who he was but we can still hear his words. With much
respect. I think Claus of PNE has made a perfect job. He added the typical PNE style, used
some vocal parts to create a new chorus and included his own voice. It was clear that this
remix was the perfect bonus for the main CD.
Chain D.L.K.: :Wumpscut: AKA Rudy Ratzinger is somebody whom you like and respect.
Comparable to the great Bavarian Zampano, what is your opinion about doing live gigs for
Dunkelwerk? Any hope for us to see you acting on stage one day?
Dunkelwerk: Well…as it seems the whole German Endzeit crew is afraid of stages. The
Retrosic, :W:, little Dunkelwerk. I think yelworC did some live performances 200 years ago…
I think the problem is the fact that one-man-armies (Why are Endzeit projects very very
often one-man-armies, from Germany and offer an aggressive style? Does someone know it?) can’t perform live in an interesting way. What should we do on stage?
Jumping around while screaming in the mic? Bearing torches? I don’t know. And yes: I can’t sing! I need a lot of time and a lot of different VST plug ins to create the
vocals. I have to live it. Some like this distorted vocals, some hate them. However it wouldn’t be a pleasure on stage…;) I know what I can do and performing live does
not belong to my portfolio.

has been more active as Gor

latest effort and it seems
that it's his most particular
one. Not only for the music
but mainly because it's the
first one that needed a direct
explanation
from

musician as QUMRAN is the
result of his personal path
into
spiritual
research.
Here're a couple of excerpts
of what he wrote into the
CD: "Qumran is the name of
a region in Transjordan and
precisely in a site where the
essens lived (from 138 b.c.
to 68 a.d.) the Hebrew
community which lived to
research
knowledge
and
God. The journey I went
through tends towards the
research of God touching the
various
aspects
of
the
monotheistic religions. In
this context you will listen to
different ritualistic music
forms linked together by the
Hebrew and Christian biblical
texts" and "The objective is
to give a message of
reciprocal respect so that
differences
can
go
on
together, understanding and
accepting each other, doing
something concrete for this
world, no letting it die in the
hands of egoistic people who
make religion their shield".
As you can imagine the
music has got a deep
middle-eastern taste with a
lot of chants, percussions
and
characteristics
instruments. While his old
works
had
different
moments
/
atmospheres
performed
with
different
instruments, QUMRAN is the
most homogenic and only
the last track "Miryam"
remember me a little some
tracks of "Ialdabaoth", his
most dark release. Approach
yourselves to this CD being
aware that this isn't only
music.

Chain D.L.K.: Comes then the question to your future plans musically and personal...
Dunkelwerk: I will try to find the time for the second album, which won’t be called “Troops 2”… It’s really hard for me to combine the normal job and Dunkelwerk. I’m
only at home on the weekends, that’s my biggest problem. And I’m still not sure about the concept for the follow-up release… Some first ideas exist.
Chain D.L.K.: Please give us also a report of the situation with the birds on your balcony. Are they doing well and can you tell us something new from them?
Dunkelwerk: Ah, the birds… I find peace on my balcony. No amok runners and scene prophets. Only the birds, cool drinks and sunshine. But overall most people are
very nice and friendly in this scene.

Released in a beautiful paper card box with a nice art work here comes a new DCD compilation set of the Alfa Matrix label group out of Belgium. The reason for the release is simple, also Alfa Matrix celebrates its 5th anniversary.
With an ever growing roster the need for DCD is surely required to pick all active acts. Almost all bands offer new stuff, or hard to find items. Check the track listing below and pick out your favorite, but a few need to be
mentioned here. HEADSCAN opens the first CD with a new cut “Tomorrow Square” – high skilled and modern with some well integrated Trance elements as usual. ZOMBIE GIRL also return with a tougher remix of “Bleeder”
which really kicks! TAMTRUM also satisfy here with a remix of their cut with the unspeakable name “Paranoiak, Hypokondriak & Toxicomaniak (The Poison Gift Remix)”. Great tracks are also presented by INURE with
“Neverending” – this act gets better and better – and STRAY, a side-project of the beloved she-devil UNTER NULL, although on her “Intoxicate (b mix)” I can’t see the sense for this side-project, because the relation to UNTER
NULL is immense. Not to forget is Claus Larsen providing a track under his very own name. Second CD offers a new UNTER NULL cut, which follows the kind of her past work and I’m sure the listeners and fans of Erica’s stuff will
dig this new tune as well. Both latest new signings I:SCINTILLA and TECHNOIR presenting the title tracks of their EP’s (TECHNOIR offers a special “Birthday Mix”), which got both released besides this compilation in these days.
Another new signing is the Swedish act MIND:STATE which follows musically the given course of acts like ASSEMBLAGE 23 with out convincing completely – a bit more own ideas and identity please. SKANDA is a new project
between the AIBOFORCEN member Benoit Blanchart and the a;GRUMH frontman J3, also presenting here their first musically sign of life, stylistically playing an ominous kind of haunting EBM – well done, I’ll look forward to hear
more. Always to mention has been now and then PLASTIC NOISE EXPERIENCE providing us the old-school formula, and this works also beautiful with “So Schön”. The value of this compilation is of course presented though the
exclusive stuff all bands have to offer. If you have discovered this growing force out of Belgium you have to pick up this fine DCD set ASAP!

Not a very fresh release
indeed, this review covers
the only one real output the
Australian
Powernoise/Industrial label
Cranial Fracture has brought
out. The reason to include
this here belongs on the
fact, that this label under
the leadership
of Leon
Tranter currently works hard
to start a comeback. For
sure another fine resource
out of Australia of a growing
scene next to the Crash
Frequency
collective.
Besides this, it features with
NEON WOMB experimental
recordings of the musician
Lee Bulig – whom we all
here know much better
under the name STARK.
Experimental
recordings
compared to STARK – well,
indeed, and you shouldn’t
expect to get a similar sonic
onslaught. His signature is
recognizable also with NEON
WOMB, but with a very few
exceptions you’ll get a harsh
electronic-based
almost
instrumental album, which
totally avoids the known 4/4
bass lines, which brought
comparisons to a big player
like :WUMPSCUT:. Globally a
noisy and disturbing work of
Lee, far away from some
“Intimate Moments”, while
this track is available next to
the original also as a remix
work by SCALAR. Not that
harsh Powernoise effort this
label stands for, because
Lee’s
Electro-minded
background is still alive.
Designed for all STARK fans
out there to grow deeper
into the musically universe
of this talented musician.

Same procedure as last year: The “compilation of the year 2005” contest is over before the contest could start - and this unofficial title goes again to the US-based label BLC Productions which gives the scene another
outstanding DCD collection from the scene. Yes, the formula of success is still the same by giving again a fascinating cover art (done by Wilhelm “Deaddreamer”, www.deaddreamer.com) of the already known and ongoing alien
inspired trilogy. Also the chosen bands out of the harder Electro/Industrial genre offer again almost quality and worth to listening tracks while BLC still keeps an eye to find the right mix between unknown newcomers and already
established acts. Another fine note besides all mentioned good points: all donations of the pre-order procedure and the sales of a whole month will be donated to the victims of the hurricane Katrina which made a disaster in New
Orleans, Louisiana, in the last year. A great signal of charity which needs more imitators. “The Flesh Harvest” opens with three remarkable tracks mainly based into Dark Electro with some nice layers and mostly distorted vocals
done by both Swedish acts MORTICIANS and TERROR PUNK SYNDICATE, as well as the US-Based act PROCESS OF ELIMINATION. While MORTICIANS are already active since a long time and have recently released a DCD out at
the Swedish label Plutonium-Distribution, both other acts are still unsigned – which is unbelievable. Austrian act WINTERSTAHL offers a Futurepop-inspired fast paced track with unconventional melodic synth efforts, we later get
a remarkable hard ripping track by the new US act XENTRIFUGE, yet another quality track of a newcomer. From Belgium comes the solo project GRANDCHAOS, a band which will soon release a DCD full of remix works mostly
done by classic EBM acts, with another remix of their track “Dream Factory” done by the Swiss BAK XIII. Also the German act HIOCTAN can satisfy with “Sacred Attraction”, surely one of their best pieces at all. RUN LEVEL
ZERO, a known DSBP-recording act returns with a new Dark Electro track, while the Estonian act CYCLONE B surprises with an old-school EBM track called “Cybernation”.
The second CD “Natural Enemies” starts well with the Italian act AUDIOPLUG and their track “Too Late”. It is a nice track walking more or less on the boundary between Synth Pop and EBM. We’ll get then a special remix of
“Bastard” done by the German Alfa Matrix recording artist DUNKELWERK, also BLC’s very own THE PAIN MACHINERY gives a special “Interbreeding Version” of their new track “Pre-Programmed Automatic”. With NEGATIVE
FORMAT and DIVERJE two better known US acts storm this disc by giving us some hard to get remix works. Also ALIEN PRODUCT, signed to BLC, gives a new and until now unreleased track and show some develop since their
past year’s debut. VIGILANTE is a new act from Chile playing a hard and straight crossover between Electro and Metal – it is one of the most powerful tracks of the whole comp. No wonder that they got recently signed to the
German Black Rain label. Finally BRAINCLAW are back with another nice tune called “Strike”, and also the often placed guests on this comp series, SEVERE ILLUSION return with a weird and of course unreleased remix of their
“The Giant Never Speaks Enough” track.
Brrr, my fingers hurt me now, and all tracks are full of quality and worth to get mentioned here. But I stop now for good. Check out the track list below filled with a lot of other acts to discover besides the mentioned here. Check

This is the long awaited full-length debut CD of the German one-man project DUNKELWERK consisting of Martin Kester, who could made in the past a promising appearance on the “Cyberl@b 4” compilation series of the Alfa
Matrix label. It took almost one and a half year to bring the Dunkelwerk tracks on the line with the helping hand of Len Lemeire of IMPLANT behind the mixing desk. Lets take the final result in advance: this release will be
discussed controversy. Our dear comrades of the German printed magazine Sonic Seducer boycotted this release totally with the annotation of “some bad entertainment”. Indeed – label and band released and included a lot of
comments that this release has no room for any fascist ideology. But our dear colleges of the Sonic Seducer made it themselves a bit to easy, not to take a deeper look behind this act and the meant concept. This release
moreover deals with defeat itself – there is no victory. And so this band has placed in almost all tracks some heart-breaking and at times rude voice samples, dealing with all that unexplainable terror of lost troops, of cities under
fire, or of sinking submarines out of WWI and WWII. So it is not the music nor the lyrical content which will cause discussions – it is the content of the samples. That a band takes inspiration out of war themes is not new at all.
But things are different with DUNKELWERK. I do understand people who are maybe still witnesses of time that they do not like to get reminded of the darkest time in their life. On the other side it is not acceptable that there is
still so much bad and wrong shame about this delicate theme especially in Germany that it will be discreet up to death. This dark stories of our past happened 60 years before – we’ll keep it in mind – it will never be forgotten but it must be allowed to ask for some backgrounds. Regarding the rough content of the samples I am mostly surprised how poppy most of the songs are structured musically. I’d expected somewhat more hard with a tough
“in-your-face”-attitude. Besides this I do enjoy the good technically aspects of this release and the well chosen synth layers which bring in the perfect dark mood to the overall concept of this band. Again – it is a matter of your
personal taste how this act spreads in their kind and message. Give it a try and a listen – and make your own judgement.

DUNKELWERK
Einzelschicksale
Ein im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes „dunkles Werk“ hat vor wenigen Wochen das Licht der Sonne erblickt: „Troops“ von Dunkelwerk, ein Kon zeptalbum über die Schrecken der
zurückliegenden Weltkriege, das so gar nichts gemein hat mit dem, nach Sensation heischenden Werken anderer Bands und Projekte, wo Kr iegsopfer das Cover zieren oder
historische Samples aus purer Effekthascherei und daraus resultierender Schockwirkung Verwendung finden. Im Gegenteil, „Troops“ ist neben seiner musikalischen Klasse im
Bereich von Dark Electro und Industrial nicht nur ein brilliantes Debütalbum, sondern vor allem ein sehr durchdachtes und sehr tiefgründiges Werk, das verschiedene
Einzelschicksale aufgreift und in den Kontext der Weltkriege stellt. Dass dabei dennoch historische Samples Verwendung finden, dient alleine der Verstärkung der Atmosphäre
und ist entgegen der bevormundenden Einstellung des „Sonic Seducer“, der sich weigert über Dunkelwerk zu berichten, weil man „Troops“ als „schlechte Unterhaltung“
betrachtet, keine Verherrlichung der NS-Zeit oder Verharmlosung von Kriegsgräuel. Wer aber verbirgt sich hinter Dunkelwerk? Wir fragt en bei Losttrooper, dem kreativen Kopf
Dunkelwerks nach.
Losttrooper: >> Dunkelwerk ist das erste Projekt, mit dem ich etwas veröffentlicht habe und auch der erste musikalische
Gehversuch überhaupt. Das Ganze war ein fließender Übergang vom hobbymäßigen Geklimper hin zu einer ernsthaften Idee
und Umsetzung. <<
Demnach ist Dunkelwerk ein Ein-Mann-Projekt, bei dem der Name nicht nur in musikalischer sondern auch konzeptioneller
Hinsicht Programm ist. Wie aber entstand dieser ungewöhnliche Bandname und ist die Hinzunahme weiterer Musiker für die
Zukunft eine Option?
Losttrooper: >> Der Name sollte deutsch sein, nicht futuristisch klingen und insgesamt düster wirken. Ich bin ein Kontrollfreak,
von daher glaube ich nicht, dass es einen festen Platz für einen zweiten Musiker im Konstrukt Dunkelwerk geben kann.
Allerdings lege ich viel Wert auf Meinungen von außen und habe ja auch schon für die Produktion von „Troops“ mit Len
Lemeire (Anne Clark, Implant) zusammengearbeitet. Der hat schlichtweg mehr Ahnung, wenn es um die richtige Abmischung
der Tracks geht. Kompositorisch funkt mir aber keiner rein. <<
Wo aber liegen denn nun die musikalischen Wurzeln und Einflüsse Dunkelwerks und seines Protagonisten?
Losttrooper: >> Im Grunde kommt die Liebe zur elektronischen Musik vom Techno her. Ich liebe einfach die alten Sachen von
’89-’92, Dancefloor, Trance und Goa. Einflüsse kommen aber aus vielen unterschiedlichen Ecken. Pop, HipHop, was auch
immer. Elektro Industrial ist bei mir nur ein kleines Element unter vielen. Ich beschränke mich da nicht. <<
Bei diesem musikalischen Hintergrund liegt eine Vertragsunterzeichnung beim belgischen Label Alfa-Matix nicht wirklich zwangsläufig auf der Hand. Wie also kam dieser
Kontakt dann letzten Endes zustande?
Losttrooper: >> Ich habe mal eine Demo an Cyrus von The Retrosic geschickt, um eine ernsthafte Außenmeinung einzuholen. Cyrus war dann der Meinung, dass man den
Versuch starten sollte einen Song auf einen anstehenden Alfa Matrix-Sampler zu bekommen. Auf Empfehlung von The Retrosic kam dann der Erstkontakt mit Seba von Alfa
Matrix und dann der Plattenvertrag. Die haben mich allein aufgrund der Demos gesignt, weil sie die Idee und das Konzept umgehauen hat. Die Songs selber waren da erst in
einem frühen Stadium. <<
Solch ein brilliantes Debüt-Album wie „Troops“ schüttelt man sich nicht so einfach aus dem Ärmel, was die Vermutung nahe legt, dass die Vorbereitungen zu diesem Werk
schon ein paar Tage länger andauern, wie Losttrooper dann auch bestätigt.
Losttrooper: >> Gezielt mit „Troops“ begonnen habe ich Ende 2003, allerdings sind auch etliche ältere Songideen verwendet worden. Ich kann das kaum auseinanderhalten.
Man beendet einen Song, stellt fest, dass es so doch nicht knallt und ändert die Melodie oder kickt ganze Sounds raus. Frag mich nicht, wie viele Versionen es von den
einzelnen Songs gab. Diese Ausdauer hat sich aber ausgezahlt, denke ich. <<
Musikalisch werden in den bislang veröffentlichten Rezensionen immer wieder Vergleiche Dunkelwerks zu Bands wie :Wumspcut:, Yelworc
oder auch Funker Vogt gezogen, was einerseits einer gewissen Grundlage nicht entbehrt, auf der anderen Seite dabei aber auch die
Eigenständigkeit des Projektes verkennt. Wie definiert Losttrooper seine Musik?
Losttrooper: >> Ich nenne die Musik Endzeit-Elektro, wobei Dark Elektro sicher auch richtig ist. Dunkelwerk verbindet elektronische
Clubmusik mit dunklen Beats, klaren Melodien und dem üblichen verzerrten „Gesang“, wobei ich hier und da auch mal den Verzerrer im
Schrank gelassen habe und generell viel weniger verzerre als viele andere in der Ecke. Den Vergleich zu Funker Vogt sehe ich nicht so
deutlich, zu :Wumpscut: aber schon, was auch keine Überraschung ist. Rudy hat wohl das Endzeit Ding überhaupt erfunden und mit „Music
For A Slaughtering Tribe“ und „Bunkertor 7“ zwei Alben für die Ewigkeit produziert, die mich tief beeindruckt und sicher auch geprägt haben.

Nun ist solch ein endzeitliches Konzept und die Bezugnahme auf die Weltkriege keine wirklich neue Idee. Warum also hat Losttrrooper sich
dennoch dieses Themas angenommen und wie war die Herangehensweise an dieses dennoch immer wieder tabuisierte Thema?
Losttrooper: >> Es gibt zu „Troops“ zwei Perspektiven. Die eine ist die Geschichte Deutschlands und die unglaublich dunklen Geschichten,
die diejenigen erzählen, die im Chaos verloren gingen und irgendwie doch den Weg zurück fanden. Da hörst du nichts von Ruhm und Sieg.
Da geht es um Verlust und Einsamkeit in dunkler Zeit. Die andere Perspektive ist eine persönliche, die das Thema Krieg als Metapher
benutzt. Es gibt auch Niederlagen ohne Bomben und donnernde Flak, aber mit Verlusten an allen Fronten... <<
Natürlich zählt die Verwendung von historischen Samples bei solch einem thematischen Hintergrund zum Konzept, doch nicht die ewig
blecherne Stimme Hitlers ist es, die hier ihre erneute und wenig innovative Verwendung findet, sondern, von einer Ausnahme abgesehen,
bislang kaum verwendete Tondokumente, deren Ursprung und Quelle nicht immer ganz so einfach zu lokalisieren war.
Losttrooper: >> Fast alle Samples sind Originale der Zeit, nur wenige stammen aus sehr alten Filmen. Man kommt an solche
Originalkriegsaufnahmen nur sehr schwer ran. Manche Sprachsamples auf „Troops“ dürfte bis dato kaum jemand gehört haben, der sich nicht intensiv mit solchen Schatten
der Vergangenheit beschäftigt. Dieses U-Boot Sample mit den Befehlsanweisungen zur Aufgabe war die härteste Suche. Oft standen die Songs und das Thema fest und erst
dann habe ich nach Samples gesucht, die passen. Zum Glück gibt es Liebhaber, die solche Klangschätze sammeln. Insgesamt eine sehr schwierige Suche. <<
Bei der Betrachtung des Albums fällt auf, dass Losttrooper vornehmlich Einzelschicksale in Bezugnahme auf die Weltkriegsthematik schildert, und zu keiner Zeit billig auf
einen Schockfaktor setzt. Diese Herangehensweise ist ein weiteres Indiz dafür, mit welcher Intention und Ernsthaftigkeit Dunkelwerk sich mit diesem düsteren Thema des
letzten Jahrhunderts auseinandersetzen.
Losttrooper: >> Es ging mir nie um den Schockfaktor, dann hätte ich anders gearbeitet, denn die etablierten Regeln für dieses
Promospielchen sind klar und funktionieren nebenbei superb. Man nehme schemenhafte Aussagen, feuere unkommentiert
Kriegssamples in die Meute und drucke Leichen aufs Cover. Das kennen wir. Witzig ist aber nun folgendes. Obwohl ich genau
das nicht gemacht habe, gibt es die alten Vorwürfe auch gegen Dunkelwerk; allein wegen der Thematik. Ich möchte aber auch
anmerken, dass das nur Einzelvorwürfe sind. Insgesamt hat die Szene glaube ich sehr wohl verstanden, worum es bei
Dunkelwerk geht. Ob man das dann mag oder nicht, ist eine andere Frage. Den Fokus auf Einzelschicksale zu legen, war eine
selbstauferlegte Vorgabe. Den Krieg aus der Globalperspektive in angemessener Form zu behandeln, hätte mich schlichtweg
überfordert. <<
Wie wichtig in diesem Zusammenhang die Gestaltung des Booklets ist, dürfte somit klar sein, und so überrascht die
nachfolgende Aussage Losttroopers wohl kaum.
Losttrooper: >> Na klar ist das wichtig. Ich wollte, wie gesagt, nicht durch Leichenberge auffallen, das ist respektlos gegenüber
den Opfern. Mit so was sollte man keine CDs verkaufen, denke ich. Im Booklet finden sich ausgesuchte Bilder, die thematisch
zu den Songs passen und perfekt die Endzeit Stimmung unterstreichen, ohne dabei zu aufdringlich zu sein. <<
Bei der Darstellung der Schrecken der beiden Weltkriege bezieht Dunkelwerk sich auf eine rein deutsche Sichtweise, obwohl
sicher auf die Schrecken der Bombennächte auf Coventry oder London ein mögliches Thema gewesen wären. Nun nimmt
Losttrooper immer wieder sehr glaubhaft Stellung und Abstand von jedwedem rechten Gedankengut oder revisionistischen
Tendenzen, aber dennoch sei die Frage erlaubt, ob Dunkelwerk dadurch nicht Gefahr laufen, von einigen Unverbesserlichen in
die rechte Ecke gedrängt zu werden und möglicherweise ein Publikum ansprechen, das genau das Gedankengut vertritt, dem
Dunkelwerk gerade jeden heroischen Gedanken absprechen.
Losttrooper: >> Die Gefahr besteht, das ist richtig. Richtig ist auch, dass „Troops“ keinen Geschichtsunterricht ersetzt. Dass es auf allen Seiten ein Desaster von unglaublicher
Wucht war, sollte jedem klar sein. Es geht auf „Troops“ auch nicht um Schuld oder eine Bewertung. Es geht um den Einzelnen, der irgendwo in den Niemandsländern zu sich
kommt und nun realisieren muss, dass er hier und jetzt in die optionslose Niederlage stürzt. Ob selbstverschuldet oder als Opfer ist dann egal. Diesen Unterschied macht die
Situation dann nicht mehr. In diesem Sinne ist das Konzept von Dunkelwerk optionslos. Ob „Troops“ die falschen Leute anspricht? Und selbst wenn? Ändert sich damit die
Aussage der CD? Wohl kaum. Und wer ist nun „richtig“ oder „falsch“? Bei der Produktion von „Troops“ habe ich keine Rücksicht auf irgendwelche Befindlichkeiten genommen.
Rechts, Links, was auch immer. Ich bin meine Referenz und die Linie ist klar. Man muss das, was ich hier mache, nicht mögen, aber man kann es verstehen, weil ich dazu
etwas sage und mit Anfragen ernsthaft umgehe. Darum geht es mir. <<
Dennoch galt es auch im Lager Dunkelwerks Erfahrung mit dem missionarischen Eifer des „Sonic Seducer“ bei der
„Reinhaltung“ der Schwarzen Szene zu machen, die eine Berichterstattung Dunkelwerks mit dem Hinweis auf einen
„Schlechten Unterhaltungswert“ kategorisch ablehnte. Mal dahingestellt, mit welchem Recht der„Sonic Seducer“ sich hier als
Sprachrohr der Szene versteht, die im übrigen anderer Meinung zu sein scheint, wie die DAC-Platzierung Dunkelwerks belegt,
so stellt sich doch die Frage, wer bestimmt, was „gute“ und was „schlechte“ Unterhaltung ist und ob es nicht vielmehr zur
journaillistischen Pflicht gehört hätte, mal kritisch bei Losttrooper nachzufragen, anstatt die Zensurschere herauszuholen, einen
ängstlichen Blick auf mögliche Abwanderungsgedanken von Anzeigenkunden zu werfen und weite Teile der Schwarzen Szene
dadurch zu bevormunden.
Losttrooper: >> Ach ja der „Sonic Seducer“ ... Lustiges Magazin mit netten Bildern. Ich kauf´s ab und an trotzdem noch. Die
haben halt ihre nicht gerade konsequent durchgezogene Linie, alles, was auch nur mit dem Thema Krieg zu tun hat, als
„schlechte Unterhaltung“ zu definieren. Politik wollen die auch keine in ihrem Magazin haben, weil das wohl nach deren
Meinung die Leser verstört. Mit mir hätte man ja mal inhaltlich reden können, wollte man aber nicht, war vielleicht inhaltlich eine
Messlatte zu hoch, keine Ahnung. Alfa-Matrix hat das viel mehr enttäuscht als mich. Ich habe meine Regeln, der „Sonic“ hat
eigene. Völlig ok. <<
Dennoch hat man den Eindruck, dass der „Sonic Seducer“ sich hier zum Lautsprecher einer Bewegung zu machen, die sich anmaßt, unbequeme Themen unter den Tisch zu
kehren oder erst gar nicht aufkommen zu lassen. Auch Rudy Ratzinger hat diesbezüglich mit dem Oberhausener „Szene“-Magazin ja bereits unliebsame Erfahrungen machen
müssen.
Losttrooper: >> Ob man jetzt den :Wumpscut:-Bann mit dem von Dunkelwerk in eine Tonne werfen kann, weiss ich nicht. Rudys Sarkasmus ist nun mal eine Klasse für sich.

Ich hätte ja zumindest noch den Versuch unternommen, eine ernsthafte Kommunikation zu führen. Wollte aber auch keiner. Ansonsten glaube ich nicht, dass es beim „Sonic“
um eine „Bewegung“ geht. Die leben nun mal von Anzeigen, dahinter stehen Kunden. Der „Sonic“ hat schlichtweg keinen Bock und keine Zeit auch nur im Ansatz in den Ruf zu
kommen „fragwürdige“ Bands zu featuren. So einfach dürfte das sein. Also reduziert man sich und damit die „Szene“, die man angeblich vertritt, auf Vampire, Engelchen und
biederen SM plus Metal (der darf auch mal böse sein und Satan huldigen). Für was Ernstes neben der üblichen „Alles depressiv, ich muss kotzen!“-Nummer und den
Fabelwesen der dunklen Seite, bleibt kein Platz. Passt dann auch nicht mehr in die lustige Runde. Ich habe gegen all diese Themen nichts und formuliere hier natürlich
überspitzt. All das hat seinen berechtigten Platz in dieser Musikecke. Dunkelwerk auch, wenn auch nicht im „Sonic Seducer“. <<
Nun ist gerade diese Kriegsthematik immer wieder Gegenstand einer künstlerischen Betrachtungsweise gewesen. Mal hintergründig
und mit ernsthaften Absichten, mal provozierend und auf Schockeffekte setzend, so dass man meinen müsste, zu diesem Thema
müsste mittlerweile eigentlich alles gesagt sein. Das wirft natürlich automatisch die Frage auf, ob Dunkelwerk auch zukünftig weiter auf
diese Themen setzen werden?
Losttrooper: >> Es wird kein „Troops 2“ geben. Das Thema Krieg wird nicht verschwinden, aber nicht mehr derart im Zentrum stehen.
„Troops“ ist ein Konzeptalbum und hat das gesagt, was ich zum Thema sagen wollte. Kein Grund das nun weiter auszuwälzen. Der Kern
von Dunkelwerk ist Niederlage. Vielleicht treffen wir uns auf fernen Schlachtfeldern gegen die Ausgeburten der Hölle wieder, oder wir
ziehen mit einer Division in dunkelste Länder voller Gefahren oder graben uns in die Tiefen der Welt. Eins ist klar: kein Happy End, alles
geht verloren, während der letzte Blick zurückgeht, dorthin, wo man besser geblieben wäre... <<
Wobei diese konzeptionelle und selbstgewählte Arbeitsweise wohl am besten zu Dunkelwerk passt, denn auch das Nachfolgealbum soll
ein Konzeptalbum werden.
Losttrooper: >> Ja, auch das nächste Album wird wohl einem Konzept folgen. Ich muss gedanklich in etwas versinken können. Ich
brauche jetzt keine durchgehende Geschichte vom ersten bis zum letzten Song, aber die Gesamtatmosphäre muss in einem Kontext
angesiedelt sein. <<
Da leider auch Dunkelwerk, wie so viele Bands dieses Genres, als reines Studioprojekt gedacht ist, stellt sich unweigerlich die Frage,
was nun als nächstes im Hause Losttrooper ansteht.
Losttrooper: >> Ich schau mal, wie lange es dauert, bis ich das zweite Album fertig habe. Alles nicht so leicht, da Dunkelwerk immer um seine Zeit kämpfen muss. In dieser
Ecke gibt es keinen Reichtum und als Newcomer sind die Chancen sowieso extrem mies. Der Erfolg von Dunkelwerk bis dato, auch in den DAC, ist außergewöhnlich. Es
macht also Sinn, weiterzumachen, zudem macht es ja irre Spaß. Und Hand aufs Herz: es ist schon extrem cool, wenn man aus irgendeinem Nest in den Anden eine Mail in
gebrochenem Englisch bekommt, in der jemand mitteilt, dass ihm Dunkelwerk sehr viel bedeutet und ihm das Herz aufgeht, während draußen die Lamas dahintraben. Das
rettet mir hier so manchen Tag! <<

Electro-Tracks in der Tradition von solchen Acts wie Yelworc, The Retrosic oder :wumpscut: hier bieten, ist einfach nur brilliant. U nd wer meint, Dunkelwerk würden durch
die Verwendung historischer Samples aus den beiden Weltkriegen hier auf blosse Effekthascherei oder „Schlechte Unterhaltung“ setzen – ein Gruss an die „Kollegen“ vom
Sonic Seducer, die sich mittlerweile zum wiederholten Male als Szene-Polizei zu etablieren suchen –, der sollte sich intensiv mit de n Inhalten und der Art der verwendeten
Samples auseinandersetzen. Das Schicksal des einzelnen und sein Überlebenskampf im Schützengraben mit all seiner Tragik stehen hier im Mittelpunkt, und nicht der
Schockeffekt als Promogag. Auf dieser Basis ist „Troops“ ein wirklich mitreissendes Album, tanzbar und atmosphärisch gleichermaßen, dabei aber auch zum nachdenken
anregend und dabei politische Ideologien durch das Schicksal Einzelner (Armeen) in Frage stellend. Wer die Klasse und die Clubtaugli chkeit solcher Songs wie Songs wie
„Troops“, „Underfire“ oder „Die sechste Armee“ verkennt, muss entweder taub oder absoluter Ignorant sein. Für mich ist „Troops“ DAS Debüt einer Electro-Band aus dem
Jahre 2005.

Das Debütalbum
„Troops“ des
deutschen
Projekts
katapultiert den
Hörer in die
Ruinen und
Niemandsländer
des 1. und 2.
Weltkriegs.
Dunkle
Elektroattacken
kombiniert mit
traurig
orchestralen Arrangements und marschierende Beats
erzeugen eine intensive Atmosphäre voll Einsamkeit und
Niederlage. Kein Ruhm, kein Sieg. Nur Aufgabe und
Kapitulation! ... und ein paar Fragen an den Verantwortlichen.
Hallo, da sicher nicht jeder mit dem Namen Dunkelwerk etwas
verbinden kann wäre es nett wenn du uns sagen würdest wer
dahinter steckt?
Wer dahinter steckt ist eigentlich nicht wirklich wichtig.
Zumindest nicht für mich. Deswegen benutze ich auch ein
Pseudonym, wobei ich das jetzt auch nicht konsequent
durchziehe, das wäre auch albern. Martin geht also auch.
Dunkelwerk besteht nur aus mir und das auf allen Ebenen.
Ich wüsste nicht, wie ich jemand anderes sinnvoll einbinden
könnte; im Grunde will ich das auch nicht, da der thematische
Kern von Dunkelwerk schon sehr persönlich ist. Allerdings
lege ich viel Wert auf Meinungen von außen, so hat ja auch
Len Lemeire (Implant, Anne Clark) das Album gemixt, da ich
selber begriffen habe, dass ich das niemals so gut
hinbekommen hätte. Und auf dem Weg hin bis zur
Veröffentlichung haben einige Leute ihre Meinung abgegeben
und hier und da erschienen mir diese Anmerkungen auch
sinnvoll und hilfreich, dann wurde das miteinbezogen und
umgesetzt. Ansonsten ist Dunkelwerk das, was man wohl
Endzeit Elektro nennt. Also treibende Clubtracks mit dunkler
Atmosphäre und dem gewissen Bumms, umgesetzt von einer
Ein-Mann-Armee.

offensichtlichen Industrial Ausdruck oder gar was
Militärisches benutzen. Dunkelwerk klingt wie ich finde recht
interessant, da nicht sofort klar ist, worum es musikalisch
geht; außer halt, das es eher düsterer Natur ist.Dann
kommt noch hinzu, dass dieses dunkle Werk fürwahr oft im
Mantel der Nacht produziert wird, irgendwie sind sonnige

High-Noons nicht so recht zum Machen solcher Musik
gedacht. Geht aber auch! Der Name sollte auch unbedingt
Deutsch sein, das ist ein nicht zu verachtender
Wiedererkennungswert und das nicht nur in Übersee.
Inhaltlich dreht sich bei deinem Debüt-Album Troops alles
um den 2. Weltkrieg und (wie sollte es auch anders sein)
um die deutsche Wehrmacht. Was fasziniert dich so an
dieser Zeit, dass du ihr gleich ein ganzes Album widmest?
Mein Standpunkt ist da recht einfach: Die Frage ist nicht,
welches Thema man bearbeitet, sondern wie man das tut.
Das Album ist kein Kindergeburtstag, da der Hintergrund
eine reale fundamentale Katastrophe ist. Ich denke, dass
ich verantwortungsvoll mit dem Thema umgegangen bin.
Klare Aussagen, kein verqueres Heldentum, Leichenberge
oder im Kontext sinnentleerte Samples. Und weil das
Ganze nicht als Nebentrack abzuhandeln war, ist Troops
ein komplettes Konzeptalbum geworden und ja, die
deutsche Wehrmacht war nicht zu vermeiden, weil es
sinnig war.Problematisch ist bei einem Konzeptalbum aber
natürlich der Umstand, dass Personen, denen das Thema
nicht gefällt nun auch das komplette Album gegen den
Strich geht. Für mich ist das eher der Beweis einer in sich
schlüssigen Produktion mit Reibungselementen. Es gibt
genug nichtssagende CD´s am Markt. Aber klar,
Dunkelwerk öffnet sich mit Troops nicht nur Türen,
sondern haut auch so manche zu. Verluste gibt´s immer.
Mir ging es um den Einzelnen, der irgendwo in den
Niemandsländern zur Besinnung kam und nichts vor sich
hatte als Niederlage; ohne Option, ohne Rückzug. Die
Frage, ob derjenige dann Täter oder Opfer war, stellt sich
in diesen Momenten dann nicht mehr, da die Situation an
sich nur noch ein Sturzflug in die Niederlage ist.Diese
unsägliche Zeit hatte außer Niederlage und Zerstörung
nichts zu bieten, für keinen, egal welche Seite. Politische
Aufklärung und geschichtliche umfassende Fakten bieten
die zig Fernsehdokumentationen, das leistet Troops nicht;
das ist wohl jedem klar. Ich wollte den Fokus runter auf
den Einzelnen brechen, das hat mich interessiert. In der
Form und derart konzentriert hat das wohl noch niemand
umgesetzt. Muss man nicht gut finden, kann man aber.
Hast du dir eigentlich Gedanken über die Außenwirkung
der Samples gemacht? Ein Adolf Hitler Sample zu
verwenden ist ja nicht neu und hat schon andere Bands
in ein falsches Licht gerückt.
Sei Dir sicher, ich weiss sehr genau, was ich hier tue und
da ist nichts im Irrflug umgesetzt worden. Wie schon
weiter oben gesagt, die Frage ist, wie man mit solchen
Samples umgeht. Diese sind zu 90% Originale der Zeit
und wurden so quer durch Deutschland gefunkt. Dunkle
Fragmente, erschütternd und verstörend. Das sind eben
keine Fantasy-Horrorsamples und genau das bereitet
vielen Unbehagen.Zu Recht! Um das „falsche Licht“
mache ich mir keine Sorgen, das gibt die Umsetzung und
die klare Aussage von Troops nicht her. Man kann Troops
wahrlich trefflich kritisieren und wie der Sonic Seducer
sogar als schlechte Unterhaltung bezeichnen. Das ist
alles ok, damit habe ich kein fundamentales Problem. Es
gibt aber keinen Grund, ein Thema nicht zu behandeln.
Nur muss man mit einigen Themen viel überlegter
umgehen als mit anderen, das ist klar. Ich mache
deutliche Aussagen und stelle mich auch kritischen
Fragen. Diese Verpflichtung steht hinter einem Album
wie Troops und das nehme ich sehr ernst.
War dir die Gestaltung des CD-Booklet sehr wichtig
oder hat sich da jemand anderes ausgetobt?
Ja, das war mir sehr wichtig. Es sollten keine
Leichenberge verwendet werden, weil ich mit so etwas
keine CD´s verkaufen will. Im Booklet findet man ein
paar sehr düstere Bilder, die die morbide Atmosphäre
der Zeit perfekt einfangen und auch thematisch mit
einzelnen Songs verknüpft sind. Es gab Ideen, das
extern umsetzen zu lassen, was aber nicht so wirklich
funktioniert hat. Also habe ich das Ganze selber
gemacht. Allerdings beschäftige ich mich schon etwas
länger mit Grafiklayout, war also machbar.

Ach, öfter mal was Neues. Dunkelwerk war das erste Dark
Electro Projekt auf Alfa Matrix und ist bis heute irgendwie das
schwarze Schaf im Stall. Die Jungs hat halt das Konzept und
die konsequente Umsetzung umgehauen, außerdem versteht
man sich sehr gut und teilt ähnliche Ansichten bezüglich des
Musikgeschäfts. Ich habe schon so manches von
Musikerkollegen über deren Labels und Verträge gehört. Da
kann dir Angst und Bange werden. Allerdings unterschreiben
viele auch den größten Blödsinn, nur um eine CD auf den
Markt zu bekommen. Alfa Matrix hat von Anfang an mit
offenen Karten und sauberen Verträgen gearbeitet. Mit dem
Support und der Promotion für Troops bin ich auch sehr
zufrieden, genauso wie mit der intensiven Unterstützung bei
der Produktion des Albums. Alfa Matrix öffnet Türen und gibt
Möglichkeiten, was man davon annimmt und nutzt bleibt
freigestellt. Die Referenz bei Dunkelwerk bin immer ich. Ich
bin mir ziemlich sicher, eines der besten Labels für den Start
mit Dunkelwerk gewählt zu haben. Deutsche Labels habe ich
nie gezielt kontaktiert, insgesamt gab es eh nur 2
Labeldemos...

Ja! In Bezug auf Dunkelwerk natürlich die alten :Wumpscut:
Reisser, das muss ich zugeben. Keine zweite Band war
derart ausschlaggebend für mein Interesse an dieser Art
elektronischer Musik. Daneben bin ich großer Torsten
Fenslau Sammler und Fan, also die Frankfurter
Technoschule. Abgehtracks mit coolen Samples. Gar nicht
so weit weg von Dunkelwerk, wie man meinen könnte. Uns
eint die Melodieverliebtheit und der Hang zum filmgleichen
Songaufbau
MIND
Nein. Zum einen fehlt mir einfach die Zeit, zum anderen
kann ich es allein auch gar nicht umsetzen. Da bin ich
ehrlich und pragmatisch. Dunkelwerk ist in weiten Teilen
programmierte Musik. Nicht wirklich für eine Livesession
geeignet. Man könnte jetzt die Dat´s anwerfen und nur
in´s Micro brüllen, während irgendwer im Hintergrund am
Keyboard ohne Stromkabel dreht. Das ist nicht mein Ding,
da würde ich mich nicht mit wohlfühlen. Allerdings werden
die Rufe nach Liveauftritten lauter...und vorab wohl
einfach verhallen.

Troops 2 wird es nicht geben. Wer also meint,
Dunkelwerk würde nun für immer und ewig auf den
deutschen Schlachtfeldern marschieren, irrt sich
gewaltig. Der Kern des Projekts ist nicht an das Thema
Krieg gebunden, wer Troops genau analysiert, wird
feststellen, das es um etwas anderes geht. Das zweite
Album wird wohl auch ein Konzeptalbum werden, erste
Ideen liegen vor. Mal abwarten, was daraus wird.

Ebenso! Insgesamt bin ich sehr zufrieden mit den
Presse- und Szenereaktionen auf Troops. Viele haben
mir da im Vorfeld den Untergang der Welt prophezeit:
„Kannst Du so nicht machen. Das ist zu krass.“ Und so
weiter und so fort... Ich habe meinen Teil dazu getan,
eben nicht in die fragwürdige Ecke zu geraten, ohne
dabei das Thema fallen zu lassen. Das haben die
meisten Leute verstanden, ohne das Troops jetzt
überall unkritisch angenommen wird. Das ist gut so
und entspricht dem, was ich mir erhofft habe. Man
muss ja nicht immer den leichtesten Weg gehen...

aufgemacht den Genregrößen das fürchten zu lehren.
Erste vergleiche zu Feindflug kommen schon in den
ersten Sekunden auf, können dann aber doch schnell
wieder verworfen werden.
Bei „Troops“ handelt es sich um ein Konzeptalbum,

Bei „Troops“ handelt es sich um ein
Konzeptalbum, welches den Wahnsinn
des zweiten Weltkrieges behandelt
und chronologisch beim Sturm der
deutschen Wehrmacht auf Stalingrad ansetzt. Bevor nun wieder
irgendwelche ideologischen Diskussion um die politische
Gesinnung aufkommen, kann direkt Entwarnung gegeben
werden. Hier wird mitnichten das 3. Reich glorifiziert. Die
musikalische Untermalung ist erfreulicherweise sehr
abwechslungsreich ausgefallen. Angesichts der Thematik hatte
ich mich bereits auf ein Industrialgewitter inklusive
Sprachsamples eingestellt. Doch damit geben sich Dunkelwerk
keineswegs zufrieden.
Der Opener "4871 Nord / 4448 Ost" überzeugt schon auf ganzer
Linie durch die bedrückende Atmosphäre und erfüllt die Aufgabe
eines Openers, Lust auf mehr zu machen, bestens.
Folgen "Bastard" und "Dresden" und da zeigen Dunkelwerk das
sie nicht willens sind sich im Fahrwasser andere Bands zu
bewegen und trotzdem klasse Songs abliefern können.
Sternensoldat bricht dann komplett auf dem Genre aus, was aber
zur Thematik des Songs passt. Natürlich beherrscht die Band
auch andere Wege und liefert mit „Die sechste Armee“ einen
Song der einen dann doch wieder an Feindflug denken lässt, was
aber in erster Linie an dem berühmt, berüchtigtem Sample „alle
7 Sekunden ….“ begründet ist.
Das Album lässt sich eigentlich von vorne bis hinten gut
durchhören (eine Seltenheit in diesem Genrebereich) und kommt
ohne die Skip Taste aus.

Der zwanglose Umgang mit der deutschen Kriegsgeschichte ist
nahezu beispielhaft gelöst. Ohne großartige Polemik schildert
dieses Album den Untergang des wahnsinnigen Nazi
Deutschland.

Daumen hoch für eine echte Überraschung, denn mit einer
solchen Leistung, hätte ich angesichts der von Sampler
bekannten Tracks (z.B. Stahlgrab) nicht gerechnet. In seiner
Ganzheit ist dieses Album ungemein gut.

SO.-Tu nombre es en alemán, así como algunas de tus letras y samplers, sin embargo la mayoría
de tus letras están en inglés. Por qué elegiste el nombre, qué buscabas con ello?
Losttrooper - Dunkelwerk.-Temas como ‘Sternensoldat’, ‘Hope´s Haven’ o ‘Dresden’ incluyen letras en
alemán. Muchas veces las mezclo con partes en inglés, a mí me parece que queda realmente bien y no
conozco otra banda que lo esté haciendo.
SO.-Ya que tus letras son principalmente relacionadas con conceptos bélicos, consideras que tu
disco es temático?
Losttrooper - Dunkelwerk.-Es cierto que ‘Troops’ sigue un concepto muy claro. Es sobre los vencidos y
el fracaso, sobre las tropas siendo perdidas en los campos de batalla, las ciudades bajo el fuego y los
submarinos hundiéndose en el oscuro y frío océano. Doce temas de pérdida. No hay victoria, no hay gloria.
SO.-¿En tus próximos trabajos vas a mantener la temática bélica?

La palabra Dunkelwerk consiste de “dunkel” que significa ‘oscuro’ y "Werk” que se puede traducir como
‘fábrica’ o ‘trabajo’. Quería usar un nombre alemán, me encanta el alemán. Es mi lengua materna y además
creo que tiene una atmósfera muy propia. Muy industrial...

Una de las bandas revelación del panorama electrodark, que con 'Troops' recoge violencia, agresividad,

Losttrooper - Dunkelwerk.-Envié una demo a Cyrus/The Retrosic y le pedí que me enviara algo de
feedback. Me dijo que mis temas le parecían lo suficientemente buenos para ser incluidos en un
recopilatorio de Alfa Matrix. Así que envié una demo de cinco temas al sello y tras algunas largas
discusiones, decidimos trabajar juntos. Cyrus compartió todo sus conocimientos conmigo. Él lleva su propio
sello, así que me ayudó mucho.

Losttrooper - Dunkelwerk.-Estará allí en el futuro, pero no habrá un ‘Troops 2’. Sería aburrido y
desastroso, no quiero reducir el concepto sólo a temas bélicos. Hay muchas más cosas que te vencen
en la vida.
SO.-Parece ser que has tenido que dar muchas explicaciones sobre tu imagen y tus letras. ¿crees
que se reduce a que si tu nombre es alemán y tus letras se fundamentan en temas bélicos se
complican las posibilidades de publicar la música (por la posible controversia)? ¿Cuál es tu opinión
sobre un juicio a priori?
Losttrooper - Dunkelwerk.-Me parece bien. Estaba claro que ‘Troops’ iba a producir algunas
discusiones. Estoy aquí para explicar mi trabajo, y eso es lo único que puedo hacer. Dunkelwerk está
boicoteado por parte de algunos medios por su temática bélica. Yo no glorifico la guerra, no tengo ningún
tipo de interés en pensamientos fascistas. No tengo problema con la gente que me pregunta por mi
trabajo. Dunkelwerk no pertenece a esas bandas que no se pronuncian. ¡Dunkelwerk es sobre los
vencidos, no sobre la victoria!
SO.-Muchos de tus temas parecen casi una banda sonora, y a la vez son muy bailables. Cuando
empiezas un nuevo tema, ¿qué estás buscando?
Losttrooper - Dunkelwerk.-Intento crear temas que sean pegadizos y que cuenten una pequeña historia a la
vez que creen una sensación de término o fin, ‘endzeit’. Producido por la noche para la noche.
Por otra parte, me gustan los beats, por eso los temas de Dunkerlwerk son bastante bailables. Directos al
grano.
SO.-Muchas de las producciones de la escena
alternativa oscura son bastante repetitivas con
respecto al sonido. ¿Quieres pertenecer a alguna
escena o estás abierto a cualquier tipo de sonido o
posibilidad para tu material?
Losttrooper - Dunkelwerk.-Escucho mucho goa, me
gusta el trance y la música para las pistas de baile, y a
veces compro discos de los charts porque son buenos.
Pero Dunkelwerk es ‘Endzeit Electro’ por la temática
agresiva, tiene sentido cuando lo ves de esta forma. Los
conceptos de pérdida y de estar vencido fuerzan a
Dunkelwerk a buscar un sonido con un estilo más oscuro.
En términos generales no me interesan especialmente
estilos o escenas específicas. Un tema es bueno o malo, es así de simple.

SO.-¿Qué considerarías que son tus mayores influencias?
Losttrooper - Dunkelwerk.-En ‘Troops’ es la historia alemana, pero al final acaba siendo todo el concepto de
‘estar vencidos’; es como una metáfora sobre cosas personales que no tienen nada que ver con una
guerra en sí. Pero esto siempre estará enterrado en mi corazón y nunca verá la luz del día.
SO.-Algunas veces relegas el trabajo de las voces por samplers. ¿Cómo encuentras los samplers
y cómo eliges uno específico para un tema?

Losttrooper - Dunkelwerk.-Muchos de los samplers que utilicé en ‘Troops’ son rarezas originales,
grabaciones de la Primera y la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Difícil de encontrar, difícil de conseguir.
Consiguen crear la atmósfera triste y depresiva de ‘Troops’.
SO.-Tras la respuesta positiva que has recibido con tu primer disco, ¿estás trabajando en nuevo
material? ¿Qué nos podemos esperar?
Losttrooper - Dunkelwerk.-La respuesta positiva es sobrecogedora. Estoy trabajando con nuevo material,
pero es difícil encontrar el tiempo puesto que tengo un trabajo a jornada completa, y vivo en dos lugares
diferentes. Pero sigo intentando buscar una manera de organizar mejor todo. Según lo que parece, el
sonido cambiará, pero está en un estado muy primitivo, así que esperemos para ver qué pasa. Aún así,
sí puedo decir que estará enfocado a temas que se puedan bailar en los clubs.
SO.-¿Ves posibles colaboraciones con otros artistas en el futuro?
Losttrooper - Dunkelwerk.-No sé, quizá. Cuando pueda encontrar el tiempo y si la oferta es interesante,
estoy abierto a cualquier cosa. Pero al final del día, Dunkelwerk es un ejército de un solo hombre, y
prefiero trabajar solo.

INTERVIEW - DUNKELWERK

“Electro/Industrial/Dancefloor 4 the Troops”, so der “Slogan” Deines
Projekts “Dunkelwerk“.
In der Tat geht es in Deiner Musik sehr kriegerisch zu; vor allem der zweite
Weltkrieg scheint ein zentrales Thema zu sein. Was hat Dich dazu bewogen,
sich (musikalisch) damit zu befassen?
Losttrooper: Im Kern geht es bei Dunkelwerk um den Moment, in dem alles
verloren geht, wenn Niederlage optionslos siegt. Dieses Element findet
sich in Kriegen und in vielen anderen Momenten wieder. Die beiden
Weltkriege sind nunmal die offensichtlichsten Gebiete für dieses
Konzept, erstmal...
Musik ist für mich nur das Werkzeug, um Atmosphere und Idee zu
vermitteln; sie ist im Kontext Dunkelwerk kein Selbstzweck. Wobei ich
aber auch gar nichts gegen Spasstracks habe.
Nicht nur in diesem “Slogan” assoziierst Du in gewisser Weise Club mit
Krieg. Hinter einem Deiner Songs steht in Klammern “club is a battlefield
cut”... Ist ein Club ein Schlachtfeld?
Losttrooper: Ich muss zugeben, dass dies ein "zielgruppengerechtes"
Wortspiel ist, vielleicht sogar ein schlechtes. Ein Club ist kein
Schlachtfeld und sollte es auch nicht werden. Wenn man als
Aussenstehender aber mit der Geräuschkulisse eines Standard Elektroclubs
plus den harschen Elektroboys konfrontiert wird, mag diese (falsche)
Assoziation nicht unmöglich sein.
Electro, Industrial und Dancefloor - in diese drei Schubladen hast Du
“Dunkelwerk” gepackt. Passt das wirklich, oder wie würdest Du Deine Musik
beschreiben?
Losttrooper: Es ging mir eigentlich darum, diesem ganzen "Was macht er
da?" Diskussionen die Luft aus den Segeln zu nehmen...bevor noch jemand
kommt und sagt: Das ist Hellektro! (das wäre mein persönlicher worst
case).Ich finde die drei Stile treffen es sehr gut, ohne dass man -auf
Teufel komm raus- versucht neue Namen zu erfinden, um sich künstlich
abzugrenzen. Es ist Electro mit dem Dreck von Industrial plus der klaren
Struktur von Dancefloor Musik. Ich erfinde hier das Rad nicht neu. Ob
ich es schaffe, genug Atmosphere und Emotion zu erzeugen, wird die
Zukunft zeigen. Lobpreisungen wirst Du von mir selbst sowieso nicht
hören. Ich gehöre nicht zu den Jungs, die anfangen Blödsinn zu reden,
nur weil sie eine Bassdrum und eine verzerrte Snare gefunden haben. Ich
weiss sehr genau, dass die Chancen für eine Etablierung unter den
gegebenen Umständen recht gering sind. Mal abwarten...
Deine aktuelle Single heißt “Die sechste Armee”. Ist dies Deine erste
Veröffentlichung auf einem Label, oder ist ihr schon etwas vorangegangen?
Losttrooper: Ja, das ist der (unerwartet) erste Streich. Mit recht guten
Reaktion in Deutschland plus den obligatorischen "Missverständnissen".
Insgesamt gab es nur 2 Labeldemos.
Die sechste Armee der Deutschen Wehrmacht wurde im Oktober 1939
aufgestellt und am 2.Februar 1943 (durch Kapitulation) in Stalingrad
vernichtet; im März aus den “Resten” neu aufgestellt. Inwiefern behandelst
du diese Thematik in Deinem Song “Die sechste Armee”?
Losttrooper: Richtig! Sie ist ein Monument, das bleiben wird. Der
Inbegriff für Niederlage, Wahnsinn und Sinnlosigkeit. Da war nichts
Heldenhaftes oder Ruhmreiches. Unverständlich, dass viele Siege suchen,
wo doch nur Niederlage war.
Ferner findet sich auf der Single (welche ja auch mit Singles von drei
anderen Bands auf der CD “Square Matrix 004” zusammengefasst wurde) ein Song
namens “Underfire”. Worum genau geht es hier?
Losttrooper: Es geht um den Einzelnen, der plötzlich nicht mit wehenden
Fahnen zum Sieg marschiert, sondern mit Mann und Maus "unter Feuer"
steht. So mag es vielen ergangen sein. Ein bitterer Fehler mit fatalen
Konsequenzen und Opfern auf allen Seiten. This day nothing can be saved!
Was kommt denn als nächstes von “Dunkelwerk” - darf man in Bälde mit
einem Album rechnen?
Losttrooper: In Bälde würde ich nicht sagen. Dieses Jahr sollte/muss es
aber passieren. Ansonsten wird es wohl wie gehabt weitere Samplersachen
geben und den ein oder anderen Remix.
Wie sieht es hinsichtlich Live-Auftritten aus? Hast Du da schon etwas
hinter und/oder vor Dir, oder handelt es sich in Deinem Fall eher um ein
reines Studio-Projekt?
Losttrooper: Nein, nein. Live ist keine Option. Ich kann es nicht live
spielen. Wer Livemusik mag, sollte eher zu Rockkonzerten gehen, die
können sowas nämlich meist besser. Es gibt sehr wenige Elektroacts, die
es schaffen, den Mangel an Livemusik durch Power wett zumachen.
Blicken wir nun noch etwas in die Zukunft. Hast Du vor, Dich im Rahmen
von “Dunkelwerk” auch weiterhin verstärkt dem (Welt-)“Kriegsmuff” zu widmen,
oder planst Du, Dich früher oder später mehr auf anderem Terrain zu bewegen?
Losttrooper: Der "Kriegsmuff" macht solange Sinn wie er sich mit dem

Losttrooper: Der Kriegsmuff macht solange Sinn, wie er sich mit dem
Konzept trifft. Wie aber schon weiter oben erwähnt, findet sich
Niederlage in vielen Konstellation und Sachverhalten. Krieg ist nur
eine Möglichkeit, sich damit zu beschäftigen. Aber wer weiss schon,
wohin es einen musikalisch trägt...dunkel und düster wird es aber
bleiben. Das Dunkelwerk wird nicht Everybody´s Darling werden. Aber eins
sei auch klar gesagt: So "fragwürdig" die Thematik von Dunkelwerk für
manchen auch sein mag, es wird hier immer eindeutige und klare Aussagen
geben. I have NO use for ANY fascist train of thought! Sobald es
aggressiv und deutsch wird, wird man gerne in gewisse Ecken gedrängt. Da
gehört das Dunkelwerk nicht hin, ganz im Gegenteil. Und das ist mir
persönlich wichtig.

Radio / losttrooper: Dunkelwerk is only me, no one else is involved. The purpose I waste
Player my rare sparetime with this music thing. Its fun and i really like electronic music
and this whole production process. I try to create sonic landscapes, movie-like or
Gothic something like this. Telling short tales is interesting.

Where do your lyrical and musical inspirations come from?
FuckTheMainstream
losttrooper: For the album Troops i focused on WW1 and WW1. I watched a lot german tv documentations
about this dark times, read old books and stuff. :Wumpscut: is a rather big inspiration, i think i cant hide
this fact. The combination of endzeit feelings, aggressive music and lyrics is very cool, at least for me. For
the future i wont go on with WW1 and WW2. We have enough dark themes in this cruel little world to
discover.
What do you think of the state of industrial music these days?
losttrooper: I dont care. Im not a member of this scene, i dont visit clubs or buy a lot of industrial music.
Most people around here are rather disturbed that i produce such dark aggressive music. Most of the time
i listen to trance, dancefloor and normal chart music... I own a hughe :W: collection, have some Leaether
Strip, VNV Nation, Apop...thats it. Dont ask me why but in the night theres this little beast called
Dunkelwerk which forces me to produce industrial music. Strange but i love it the way it is. So i cant say
some wise words about the industrial scene these days because i dont know it good enough...

losttrooper: Alfa Matrix is a fresh breeze and i love their professional attitude. Nice guys with a vison and
far away from being lame and boring scene prophets. This makes everything much easier for both sides.
And besides this they run a very impressive distribution and promotion network. Alfa Matrix helped me a
lot to get Dunkelwerk out of my cellar.
Q: Your first album Troops just came out, which I have to say is fantastic,
defiantly one of my favorites this year. Are there any plans on doing live shows
in the near future?
losttrooper: Touring makes no sense for me. I dont have a concept to present
Dunkelwerk on stage, im only one. Its impossible to play Dunkelwerk live and i dont
want to fake it or recruit some not belonging folks to realize it. And believe me overall you dont make any
money by touring in this scene (compared to a normal job). Sell some limonade and you will earn MUCH
more.
Q: Do you have a job or do you pretty much make a decent living off your music?
losttrooper: Ha! ... I have a normal fulltime job, so i dont care about the money i can make by doing
industrial music. Otherwise i would realize that it makes no sense at all (moneywise). But hey its fun! Thats
a good reason to go on. Overall the market is close to be death for this kind of music. Im 10-12 years too
late with Dunkelwerk i guess.
Q: What do you do on your free time when not working on your music, any hobbies?
losttrooper: No. My sparetime is very limited and i invest all this time to go on with Dunkelwerk. Its hard to

organize this all. Everything takes much longer as expected sometimes.
Q: What are you currently listening to and name some albums you think we should all check out. :P
losttrooper: Well the latest Trance Voices sampler is a sensation but i doubt that we have a lot of fans of
trance music with vocals here.. So for the scene...ahhh yes. In Strict Confidence. As always ISC released
a perfect new album. They are faaaaar above the average scene stuff. And Mesh "We collide" is also very
good.

DUNKELWERK - TROOPS
Dunkelwerk muss sich schon etwas rechtfertigen bei ihrem
Album. Kein Wunder: Ist doch „Troops“ ein typisches
Beispiel dafür, wie schnell man mit der Thematisierung der
Weltkriege ins rechte Lager gerückt wird. Funker Vogt
haben das ja schon eindrucksvoll bewiesen. Und
Dunkelwerk geht da sehr forsch heran. Mit Samples aus
diversen Politikerreden und Berichten spickt das Projekt
ihre ohnehin schon dunkle Musik, ohne aber die
Tanzbarkeit zu vernachlässigen. Dass das ganze nicht
abdriftet in die Belanglosigkeit liegt an den individuellen
Strukturen, die Dunkelwerk präsentiert, sowohl
musikalisch, als auch textlich. Neben der Sinnlosigkeit des
Krieges werden auch individuelle Schicksale beleuchtet, die
zum Beispiel ihre Liebe im Krieg verlieren. Das etwas
strittige „Dresden“, das teilweise verträumt wirkende
„Sternensoldat“ und das druckvolle „Die Sechste Armee“
sind auf jeden Fall markante Punkte, die das Album sehr
beleben. Außerdem sind auch gute äußerliche Bedingungen
für den Erfolg dieses Werkes gegeben. Len Lemeire von
Implant hat das ganze abgemischt und außerdem steht das
Projekt unter dem Protektorat von Retrosic. Mit so vielen
Vorschusslorbeeren kann man sicher sein, dass „Troops“
ein Szeneerfolg wird.

Das deutsche Elektro-Industrial-Dancefloor-Projekt Dunkelwerk ist bisher nur
auf Samplern und mit Remixen in Erscheinung getreten. Doch nun ist es
soweit, Dunkelwerk hat den wohl düstersten Angriff auf die Clubszene
vorbereitet, und der ist Losttrooper (dem Mann hinter Dunkelwerk, Anm. d.
Red.) mit seinem Debüt "Troops" gelungen. Obwohl sich das Album
thematisch mit den Düsternissen des ersten und zweiten Weltkriegs
beschäftigt, wird hier nichts verherrlicht, einzig allein die Niederlage und die
Hoffnungslosigkeit dieser Zeiten wird dargestellt. Mit Alfa Matrix hat sich ein
Label gefunden, dass diesem Stil gerecht wird. Doch auch das Label betritt
mit der Veröffentlichung von "Troops" Neuland, denn noch nie zuvor wurden
derart dunkle Klänge bei den Belgiern veröffentlicht. Aber irgendwann ist es
immer das erste Mal und hier zeigt sich, dass es ein Schritt in die richtige
Richtung war. Gemsicht und gemastered wurde das Album von Len Lemeire,
der schon für Implant und Anne Clark an den Reglern saß.

Gleich vornweg, Dunkelwerk sind clubtauglich ohne Ende. Trotz der dunklen
Hintergründe kracht die Musik und läßt einen nicht still stehen, geschweige
denn sitzen. Sogar die ruhiger angelegten Titel, wie z.B. "Sternensoldat", haben immer noch genug Kraft um unter die
Haut zu gehen. Vergleichbar sind Dunkelwerk etwa mit Wumpscut-Chef Rudi Ratzinger, zumindest vom Stil her, aber
Losttrooper zeichnet ein ganz eigenes Bild mit seiner Musik. Hier wird wirklich deutlich, dass der Großteil dieser
geschichtlichen Epochen aus Niederlage, Tod und Hoffnungslosigkeit bestand. Da gibt es keinen Schimmer am
Horizont, die Textsamples zeigen ein niedergeschlagenes Volk. Und obwohl die treibenden elektronischen Rhythmen
ins Ohr gehen, so täuschen sie nicht über die Texte hinweg. Im Gegenteil, sie verstärken das Ganze noch, beim
genauen Hinhören wird man eventuell doch nachdenklich.
Ein gelungenes Debüt, das sicher den Weg in die Clubs gefunden hat. Dunkelwerk müssen sich nicht verstecken, vor
allem weil es ihnen so besonders gut gelungen ist die Thematik musikalisch zu verpacken. Hier kann man keine
direkten Anspieltipps geben, das Album wirkt als Ganzes. Wer trotzdem mal reinhören will, auf der Bandhomepage
gibt es Snippets zu ausgewählten Titeln.

With its martial snares, sampled cannons, and stark
packaging, Dunkelwerk’s first full-length album conjures up all
sorts of militaristic images, but make no mistake: Troops is no
jingoistic ode to the soldier’s life. It’s as much a protest album
as any classic from The Clash or, for that matter, Bob Dylan.
As the chorus to the second track goes, “Come on, come on,
you bastard/We want our troops back home.” However, as
topical as that might sound to today’s American audience, the
use of sampled speeches from both World Wars makes it
clear that this album is less a political statement on any
current event than a reflection on the hopelessness of all
armed conflict and a mournful meditation on its human cost.
Despite the subject matter, or perhaps because of it, Troops
is breathtakingly beautiful much of the time, with the
apocalyptic strings of intro “4871 Nord/4448 Ost,” the
classically-inspired bombast of “Sternensoldat,” and the
foreboding orchestral EBM of “Die Schwartzen Jahre”
standing out as high points. The only quibble is that the vocal
production on more straightforward dance tracks like
“Dresden” and “Underfire” seems crude at times, which is a
bit surprising given the obvious care that went into the
arrangements. The occasional muffled phrase isn’t enough to
detract from the album’s message, though; most of the lyrics
are variations on the words “troops,” “fate,” “death,” and
“ruins” anyway, and it’s the haunting atmospheres that sets
this album apart, not the growled vocals. A startling debut and
a masterpiece of German EBM, Troops will especially appeal
to fans of :Wumpscut:’s grim spirit and Feindflug’s historical
conceptualism.

Neben sehr vielen Sternschnuppen, die am Elektrohimmel
aufglühen und sich dann ganz schnell in die Elementarteilchen
der Belanglosigkeit auflösen gibt es immer wieder mal
Himmelskörper, die sich am Firmament festsetzen und mitunter,
wenn es ganz gut läuft, zu Fixsternen mutieren.
Das Zeug dazu hat das One-Man-Projekt Dunkelwerk des
Künstlers Losttrooper. Entdeckt und gepusht von THE RETROSIC
ist nach einem ersten Lebenszeichen auf dem Cyberl@b 4.0
Sampler und diversen Remixen nun das erste Album des
deutschen Projektes auf Alfa Matrix erschienen.
Musikalisch im harschen Endzeit-Elektro im Stile von :Wumpscut:
oder :SITD: beheimatet zieht sich das Thema "Krieg" als roter
Faden durch dieses Album. Weit enfernt von verharmlosend
lustigen Comics oder Serien wie "Die Sturmtruppen" oder
"MASH" zeigt "Trooper" die wahren Bilder des Krieges: Blut,
zerfetzte Körper, Massensterben, kein Heldenmut, sondern nur
humane und gesellschaftliche Niederlagen.
Insbesondere das Schicksal der 6. Armee der deutschen Wehrmacht in der Schlacht um Stalingrad in
Weltkrieg II hat es dem Künstler angetan: Im beklemmenden Opener 4841 Nord/ 4448 Ost und auch
im hitverdächtigen Song Die 6. Armee zitieren Text und Sampler aus Filmen und Deutscher
Wochenschau immer wieder die schicksalhafte Niederlage, welche letztendlich zum Schlüssel für die
spätere bedingungslose Kapitulation des Deutschen Reiches wurde. Dabei sollte man nicht den beliebten
Fehler machen und Dunkelwerk in die rechte oder revanchistische Ecke stellen. "Trooper" glorifiziert
weder den Kampf oder die darauf folgende Niederlage als Heldentat, sondern macht im Gegenteil die
Perversion und den Wahnsinn des Krieges deutlich, u.a. auch durch das für sich sprechende
Original-Sample "Alle 7 Sekunden stirbt ein deutscher Soldat".
In dem Track Dresden thematisiert der Künstler die militärisch völlig unsinnige Bombardierung der
deutschen Stadt durch die britische Luftwaffe, der zigtausende Zivilisten zum Opfer fielen.
Dunkelwerk kombinieren ihre Aussagen geschickt mit brachialen Elektro-Klängen, sind aber auch
selbstbewusst genug, diese in entscheidenden Momenten (z.B. beim textlich anspruchsvollen Hymn) in
den Hintergrund treten zu lassen.
"Troops" liefert den Beweis, dass die Wirkung von hartem EBM nicht ausschließlich auf der Musik
basieren muss. Musikalisch ohnehin über jeden Zweifel erhaben hat Dunkelwerk ein politisches
Anliegen, welches durch "Troop" viel drastischer zum Ausdruck kommt als z.B. durch
Ostermarsch-Eiapopeia.

After a symphonic intro track, things are driven to
action with the scathing "Bastard". Its lyrical plea for a
nation's army to return home alive fits in succinctly with
dunkelwerk.de

the thumping bass drum, brassy synths, dialogue
snippets, and gruff vocals.
"Dresden" begins with a bombastic edge, with rolling
snares and kettle drums exuding the feel of a soldiers
funeral. While the meat of this track features a plucky
synth line and a bounding beat, it still retains some
heart-heavy orchestral elements like choirs and
string-synths.
With lyrics like a defeated version of Funker Vogt, "Die
Sechste Armee" is an front line account from the
battlefield, where a dismal high synth adds melancholy
to its lumbering bass and cymbal war machine.
"Sternendoldat" is a nice excursion into instrumental
territory, pairing samples and grandiose gong crashes
with icy arpeggios and trudging rhythms.

While the electronics mimic a gothic harpsichord in the intro of the spoken word piece "Hope's
Haven", they quickly give way to an unrelenting machine gun beat and the rapid whiplash of wet,

squeaky loops.
For a dessert, Dunkelwerk included two remixes at the conclusion of "Troops".
Their mentor, The Retrosic, fuse cacophnous crunch to the rhythm of their amplified mix of
"Bastard". Lastly, EBM minimalists Plastic Noise Experience not only lend their retro-electro skills
to "Sternensoldat". They even included their own clear vocals, the lyrics both spoken and sung,
the results being rather excellent and unique hybrid of darkness and pop.
Certainly, criticism will be leveled on Dunkelwerk for being so blatant in using :Wumpscut: and
The Retrosic for the basis of their formula, not to mention flack for tackling such a 'verboten'
subject matter.
If one can look beyond both of those issues, "Troops" is an entertaining debut, in particular if you
enjoy the war-centric industrial motif.
