“I take refuge in the Sangha. May we live in harmony in the great assembly as
disciples of Buddha and be freed from all hindrances, becoming units of true accord
in the Life of Harmony, in a spirit of Universal Oneness, freed from the bondage of
selfishness.” 1
Greetings to all Padma readers! You may be reading this edition of the Padma
during the last few days of May, which means that we just concluded with our
annual Satsuki Bazaar during the weekend of May 21st and 22nd! Although I am
writing this message just days before the big event, I want to thank everyone for
your countless hours of volunteering, commitment, support, and enthusiasm in
making this such a wonderful and successful event. Our annual Satsuki Bazaar is a
precious opportunity for us to come together, enjoy each other’s company, watch so
many talented performers, and to devour so many delicious foods while sharing
these joys with the community.
As a new minister, I am experiencing my year of “firsts” here at the temple. The
Satsuki Bazaar was an event that I was definitely looking forward to this year as a
“first.” The month of June is also my half-year mark as the new minister and I have
to admit that it has gone by so quickly.
As I reflect on the recent bazaar and as I look back upon my first six months here at
the temple, I am so humbly grateful for all of you and everything that you have done
to help me get settled here. Your warm welcome, smiles and hugs have been truly
appreciated. Also, there have been so many accommodations made to ensure my
comfort and safety here at the parsonage, numerous people helped with my move
and with the assembly of my furniture, so many kind members have helped and
continue to help with the office tasks and with teaching me about the magic of
databases, and the list goes on and on and because of that, my heart is full.
As I continue with my year of “firsts” and as I continue to meet members and see
your smiling faces, I am reminded of one of the Three Jewels in Buddhism, which is
the Sangha, or members, of the temple. It is the Sangha who continue to make this
temple an enjoyable, comfortable and safe place to gather to learn about the
teachings of the Buddha and Shinran Shonin. It is because of all of you that I am
purely delighted to be here.
We all may walk different paths in life, but one factor bonds us…we are all followers
of the Buddha, together. Your kind and selfless acts as the members of this Sangha
will allow Jodo Shinshu Buddhism to continue to be shared with others so that we
may all live with gratitude in our hearts. Namo Amida Butsu.
In Gassho,
Rev. Candice Shibata

Buddhist Education, 1994), 8.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The 67th Annual Satsuki Bazaar is now upon us. As I write this, we are in the home stretch for
our big weekend. Our thanks to Russell Ware and Sara Jotoku as our Chairs for this event and to
all of the individual chairs, volunteers, and members of our Sangha who work so many hours to
make this the amazing event it is.
On another note, please note the request for donations from the BCA for those impacted by the
recent earthquakes in the Kumamoto Prefecture. Checks can be sent directly to BCA or
submitted to our Temple. Please be sure to note “Kumamoto Earthquake Relief” in the memo
section of the check to ensure contributions are forwarded to the BCA Endowment Foundation.

What's Good, What's Bad, and What's Confused
By Diane Ames
When I dropped in on my friends in the drought-stressed water utility GOTNOMUD, I found Joe, the
ever-optimistic P.R. man, trying to cheer up Bob, the climate science advisor who was recovering from a
nervous breakdown. "It was supposed to be a monster El Niño," Bob kept saying with a glassy-eyed
stare. "It was supposed to be a monster El Niño."
"Count our blessings!" said Joe. "We almost got a normal rainfall year. And the snowpack! Look
at the beautiful snowpack!"
"Which is melting like it was on a stove," sighed Bob. "At the end of March, it was 87% of
normal. At the end of April, 60% of normal. Will it even be there at the end of July?"
"Since nobody knows, why not be optimistic? Some parts of the snowpack are lasting better
than others. We'll pull through the summer somehow. And right now the reservoirs here in northern
California look just fine."
"In no small part because the snowpack is melting so fast."
"Why are you always such a gloomy Gus? Look how much better off we are than we were last
year."
"Talk about a low bar! Our reservoir was a little more than a quarter full, and there just wasn't
any snowpack. Like, nothing. Bare rock. I see it in my dreams, I tell you!"
"That's your problem, living in the past. Why can't you learn to be in the present moment?"
"That may turn out to be preferable to living in our future. We're probably headed into a La
Niña, which usually means more drought. God only knows how much water we have left in our aquifers.
And what the climate scientists say about our long term prospects has me back on antidepressants."
"Enough, you guys," said the office manager. "You've been debating whether the current water
situation is good or bad. You must learn that good and bad (in the sense of desirable and undesirable)
are concepts devised by the human mind, categories we try to fit reality into. As usual, reality is too
complicated and fluid to fit perfectly into either. Concepts are very useful in that they enable us to think
and talk, but if we don't recognize their limitations, they can distort our thinking. Besides, whether
something is good or bad depends entirely on one's point of view. From the point of view of Oregon and
Washington, which got the El Niño rain we were supposed to get, things are fine. They did have some
floods, though, showing, again, that reality is more complex than our conceptual thinking would have it.
Our job is to try to see the situation we have as clearly we can and then try to do the most
compassionate thing towards all concerned, which is to divide up the water equitably."

Dear BCA Ministers and Temple/Church Presidents:
This letter is a humble request to your temple members if they would like to give to the Hongwanji Earthquake Relief fund. Please
consider putting this in your newsletter, bulletin boards, etc. to share with your members.
HONGWANJI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND (KUMAMOTO)
Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan was struck by two devastating 7+ magnitude earthquakes and numerous aftershocks since
April 14, 2016. The Buddhist Churches of America (BCA) extends our thoughts of concern and sincere condolences to those whose
lives have been affected by this tragedy.
Immediately following the initial earthquake, the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha in Kyoto initiated relief efforts, started a relief
fund, and dispatch relief assistance to the affected areas. A Kumamoto Earthquake Emergency Headquarters at the Hongwanji
headquarters in Kyoto, as well as an on-site disaster management office at the Hongwanji’s Kumamoto district office have been
established to grasp a better understanding of the situation in the area so that we may be able to provide those affected with the
appropriate support both physically and emotionally.
The BCA would like to assist the Hongwanji-ha in their relief efforts for this disaster. As members of the BCA, you can help
victims of this earthquake with a special contribution. All funds collected will be sent to the Hongwanji in Kyoto, Japan to aid in this
relief effort.
Your gift, big or small, will make a lasting impact on those who need it most. You can send donations in the following ways:
1.
Give through your local BCA temple or church (CHECKS SHOULD BE MADE PAYABLE TO YOUR LOCAL TEMPLE
OR CHURCH). The local temple or church should in turn write one check to the BCA Endowment Foundation.
2.
Give through the BCA website: Visit BuddhistChurchesofAmerica.org/Disaster-Relief and use your credit card or debit card
to send a secure donation.
3.
Give directly to the Buddhist Churches of America by mail:
Send a check payable to the Buddhist Churches of America Endowment Foundation
Please note Kumamoto Earthquake Relief in the memo section of your check.
BCA Endowment Foundation
1710 Octavia St.
San Francisco, CA 94109
Please send in your donations by JUNE 30, 2016.
As we respond to the call from Hongwanji, we must remember that tragedies and natural disasters happen constantly all over
the world. Let us remember that we are part of the world community and should be willing to help at all times and in all situations.
We ask that your temple or church be mindful of people everywhere. We want to encourage you to support not only this effort, but to
engage in social welfare efforts in your communities as well.
Thank you for your kindness and consideration.

TESTAMONIALS:
Kenji Sensei’s retreat was thought-provoking, meaningful, and fun. It helped me to
“wake up and change my life from ordinary to extraordinary.”
-JK
The retreat was a friendly, safe place, to grow, learn, and listen to my inner voice. I truly
enjoyed it.
What a wonderful, valuable experience! I loved the process, the content, and the fun of it
all.
-DF
Wow! What an experience! I am fortunate that I entrusted my precious weekend to the
guidance of an innovative, master teacher, Kenji Sensei. I tasted and savored the
beautiful Shin Buddhist perspective of the sacred in the ordinary, for an ordinary
American. My daily practice will change for the better.
-CP
This retreat is an opportunity to pause and reflect on the causes and conditions of my life,
to perceive how fortunate I am to be alive, and to see where I fit in the universe. I am
grateful.
-LL
A great workshop in understandable language to explain Buddha Nature.
The retreat with Kenji Sensei brought a great deal of insight and peace. His calm
disposition and evidence are wonderful. You’ll leave the retreat with a quieter, more
focused mind.
-AL
Creative workshop, innovative methods and approaches in experiencing Buddhism
“outside the head.” Learn and laugh!
This is my second retreat with Kenji Sensei. He puts forth Buddhist concepts in a way
that increases my awareness and desire to put into action the ME and WE relationships
for compassionate living.
-JD
This workshop has expanded my sight to the gifts in my life! From practical and simple
tools, I’m able to begin experiencing the essence of Buddha Nature right now. The
experiential work deepened my intellectual understanding.
-JH
I have had an incredible experience at Kenji Sensei’s retreat. I have learned a new way to
see and live my life. I feel like I will be able to enjoy each day with a positive attitude
and I think I will do more today instead of putting things off until tomorrow. I plan to tell
my friends about this retreat and I plan to come back next year.
I recommend Kenji Sensei’s retreat for everyone. For Shin Buddhists, the retreat brings
into focus the Teachings that we have taken for granted, but may not do. For nonBuddhists, Kenji Sensei’s presentation style offers a starting point that is truly at the
beginning. The retreat demonstrates how all of us can incorporate Buddhist thought into
our daily lives.
-MV
This is a great retreat for anyone beginning their journey into Buddhism or wanting to
enforce their understanding of Buddhism. Kenji Sensei delivers the exercises in a
practical and entertaining manner, which makes it simple to apply to one’s daily life.
I strongly encourage every member to attend one of Kenji Sensei’s retreat in your
lifetime and the sooner rather than later. I assure you that you will have a good time and
you will come home a more awakened, mindful and grateful individual.
