Dr. Scott Dorsey, associate professor of music and director of choral
activities at Mount Union College, recently enjoyed a ride to France
aboard the Air France Concorde – his prize for having the winning paint
scheme design for the Socata Trinidad GT. Dorsey, a licensed pilot, entered the Eads Socata “Paint the Trinidad GT” contest with a design he
developed over the College’s spring break in 2000. He and his wife, Dawn,
enjoyed the trip immensely. Dorsey reproposed to his wife on the flight
to France, and they renewed their vows on a bridge overlooking the Seine River. In addition to visiting the Louvre, the
Eiffel Tower and many other sites, they toured the Socata aircraft factory.
When Carl Krabill ’52 graduated from Mount Union,
there was no art major at the College. Krabill, a business major, says he can remember drawing on his
notepaper in class. Eventually, he was able to better utilize his talents, earning a master’s degree in painting
from Kent State University. After retiring as a teacher,
Krabill began painting full-time. His paintings are seen
in various prominent locations, including the surgery center of the Cleveland Clinic. Students and visitors to Mount
Union can enjoy his artwork thanks to Harold and Laurie Kolenbrander. The former College president and his wife
purchased the painting, a landscape, which now hangs in the Main Lounge of the Hoover-Price Campus Center.
Alumna’s Walk for MS a Success
After over 16 years in fund raising, Debbie Sartain-Paul ’82 was able to
accept her dream job – managing special events for the Multiple Sclerosis Society in Cleveland, OH. The MS Society is a cause that she describes as very near and dear to her heart. Sartain-Paul was diagnosed
with MS herself. Each year in April, she organizes the MS Walk in Northeast Ohio. The walk is held in April in five locations including Cleveland, Akron, Mentor, and Canal Fulton and involves over 5,300 participants. This year the walk raised over $900,000
for the MS Society. Sartain-Paul is also responsible for organizing MS Walks in Columbus and Youngstown. She is

President’s Message
We had a wonderful opportunity to welcome back some
champions to Mount Union College during Alumni Weekend this past June. While the word “champion” conjures up
visions of football helmets, scoreboards and trophies, what I
am referring to are different kinds of champions. This is to
take nothing away from our Purple Raiders football team who
have captured six national championships and have represented the College so well on the field and in the classroom.
But as generations of alumni made their way to the campus
this summer, the number of other champions we have
throughout the country and the world struck me.
You may have seen advertising recently from our Office of
Public Affairs and Marketing that points out that Mount
Union College is “A College for Champions. ” The ad campaign depicts our professors and students as champions of
the fields which they represent. Likewise, our alumni are
champions in their own right.
In the pages that follow you will be reading about some of
our alumni champions. From our Alumni Service Award
winners Joan (Davis ’60) Guylas and Bill ’52 and Carolyn
(Cowie ’55) Krochta to the more than 50 members of the
Alumni Choir who returned, plus all of those who returned
for their reunions, there are many champions among us.

three sessions were offered highlighting Mount Union’s partnership with Kursk State University in Russia, its athletic
conditioning program and the newest construction project
on campus.
“Ready, Set, Go – Preparing Today’s Athletes” was presented by Don
Montgomery ’77, defensive coordinator of the Purple Raider football team.
Dr. Mark Himmelein, assistant professor of German, presented “Mount
Union’s Partnership with Kursk State University in Russia.”
Dr. Truman Turnquist, professor of chemistry and Richard McLaughlin,
director of advancement for planned giving, offered “Bracy Hall – the Future of
Science at Mount Union College.”
ALUMNI CHOIR
More than 50 alumni returned to campus for Alumni Weekend 2002 to perform as part of the Alumni Choir. Members

In the late 1970s, Meyers had the opportunity to go to Cambodia as a nurse. She immediately volunteered, even though

Success that Spanned Generations
Marian (Meacham ’52) Shern. Meacham has had the pleasure of attending all three daughters’ 50th class reunions.
As a student, Meacham was a member of Alpha Chi Omega
sorority and played intramural basketball. She says that she
developed “a greater interest for religious knowledge, that I
would not have found otherwise.” After she graduated, she
became a Latin teacher in Norwalk, OH, and two years later,
she married a high school friend.
Shern, Meacham’s daughter, said that she thoroughly enjoyed
this year’s Alumni Weekend. She said that it was a special
event, not only for her, but for her mother, who was able to
see her youngest daughter celebrate a 50th reunion.
C

Alumni Weekend just as she has done every Alumni
Weekend since she earned her degree from Mount Union

Champions of Music
In the autumn of 1932, the first a capella choir was organized as a part of the
activities at Mount Union. Performing musical presentations on campus and
also in the general Ohio and Eastern Pennsylvania areas, the choir soon became a permanent addition to the Mount Union community. In 1949, Prof.
Cecil Stewart became the conductor of the choir and soon changed the name
to the Mount Union Choir.
It wasn’t long until the choir began to flourish. Beginning in 1949, the choir
toured annually, appearing in major cities of the East and Middle West, performing in the New England States, middle Atlantic States, Washington, D.C.,
and many others. The choir also performed radio and television services for
the National Vesper and the National Radio Pulpit. In 1961, a 30-day concert
tour took the choir to seven European countries. During the summer of 1966,
thirty-seven concerts were given in 14 countries, including Japan, Taiwan, Hong
Kong, Malaysia, India, the Middle East countries, Turkey and Greece during
the choir’s 48-day global tour.
Today, the Mount Union Choir is under the direction of Dr. Scott Dorsey. With
five choirs and approximately 200 students involved in the choral program there
is continual growth. The choir is preparing to release their third CD in the fall,
which will include current and remastered releases. The Mount Union choir
will also continue their annual touring trips. This year they will visit Washington, D.C. and Pittsburgh, PA.
