Tenacious
Join us for an excellent series of voyages on Tenacious this summer! Having enjoyed the
winter sunning herself in the Canaries and the Mediterranean, she will be returning to the
UK and embarking on some exciting and fun voyages exploring the British and French
coastlines. She will also be celebrating the 15th anniversary of her maiden voyage.

The Jurassic Coast in Dorset
Pegasus Bridge - one of the D-Day landings objectives
Tenacious will be taking part in some superb south
coast voyages this summer. She will be attending
Cowes Week and the Bournemouth Airshow, and
also calling in to the beautiful Poole Harbour, the
bustling city of London and the historic naval city,
Portsmouth. She will embark on a brilliant voyage
to the picturesque town of Weymouth, where she
will discover South England’s Jurassic Coast, and
then sail across the Channel to Bruges to spend
some time exploring this lovely Belgian city.
Tenacious will take part in a very special WW2
D-Day memorial voyage. Coinciding with the
anniversary of the D-Day landings, she will re-trace
the routes of the vessels that took Allied soldiers
over to France and visit the Normandy beaches
where they landed, the city of Cherbourg and sail
up the canal to Caen. We will be joined on board
by a WW2 historian who will bring history to life as
we sail.
Whale watching in the Azores!
The Algarve in Portugal
Departing from the sunny shores of Portugal,
Tenacious will be heading to the Azores to embark
on a fantastic whale watching voyage. The Azores
are counted among the best whale watching
destinations in the world. This small group of nine
islands is home to just over a quarter of the known
species of whale and dolphin, including humpback,
blue and killer whales. The crew will discover and
learn about the whales and dolphins they encounter
thanks to our guest wildlife expert. This is a once-ina-lifetime voyage to discover some wonderful sea
life in their natural habitat. There will also be two
great voyages into and out of the Azores, where
you are also likely to see the abundant wildlife.

About the JST
Life on Board
The JST is a charity that promotes the integration of people of all physical abilities,
through the challenge and adventure of tall ship sailing aboard two very special
ships, Lord Nelson and Tenacious. They are the only two tall ships that have been
custom built to enable people of all physical abilities to sail side by side on
equal terms.
Life on board really is about joining in and getting involved regardless of your physical ability.
Don’t worry if you have not sailed before – most people step on Lord Nelson or Tenacious with
no experience of sailing a tall ship, so you will not be alone. The permanent crew will support
you through all the tasks involved with sailing the ship and you will always have an experienced
hand with you on watch.
Facilities on board both ships include wheelchair lifts between deck levels, a
hearing
loop,

Since its founding in 1978, the JST has taken 40,000 people to sea, around half of
whom have had some sort of physical disability, including 5,000 wheelchair users.
A voyage with the JST can be a life-changing experience where adventure,
challenge and friendships come together.
“The five days aboard Tenacious
had a profound impact on me
and is an experience I shall never
forget. It taught me that fantastic,
amazing people come from all
walks of life and it taught me that
life is what you make it,
that you can go anywhere
and see anything you want,
if you work hard enough.”
Warren
How do I know what to do?
You will be put into one of four teams, called Watches,
which take it in turns to be responsible for various tasks
on board including keeping watch, even at night. Each
watch includes an experienced watch leader who will
work with you and the permanent crew. Between them,
they ensure that you are given tasks that suit your
individual strengths. Together you will sail the ship.
Accommodation
There are eight cabins on each ship for wheelchair users
and their buddies. The remaining accommodation is
provided by spacious fixed bunks on board both Lord
Nelson and Tenacious.
Accommodation has heating and air-conditioning, hot
showers and points for electric toothbrushes, shavers and
hair dryers (the power supply on both ships is standard
240v). Bathrooms are shared and include all the facilities
required for those with limited mobility, including four closo-mat toilets.
Food glorious food
The food on board is plentiful and often praised.
A professional cook and a cook’s assistant produce
three cooked meals a day and make cakes, biscuits
and scones for elevenses and afternoon tea (both known
as ‘Smoko’ on board). In addition you can help yourself
to fresh fruit and if you are still peckish during
your night watch there are always some
‘night rations’ to help you through.
Buddies
On board ship you may be assigned a ‘buddy’. A buddy
is another crew member who will be your companion on
the voyage, and together you will discover how to sail
the ship. We aim to buddy everyone up into physically
disabled and able-bodied pairs as this integration lies at
the heart of our mission. If you are sailing alone, don’t
worry! You will soon be part of the team on board as the
buddying and watch systems help to quickly create a new
family on board. If you are uncertain with any aspect of
the buddying arrangements or unsure of your role, please
speak to your watch leader or the medical purser.
Fundraising
We continuously fundraise to ensure that more people
have access to this life-changing experience.
We actively raise money so that we can apply a subsidy
to all voyage crew spaces and provide further support
by way of additional bursary funds. We need your
continued help to keep Lord Nelson and Tenacious
sailing and delivering life-changing voyages for disabled
and able-bodied people.
If you would like to donate please visit the website
www.jst.org.uk or to get involved contact the Fundraising
Team on +44 (0)23 8042 6868
Special dietary requirements are catered
for – just remember to include them in your
voyage booking form. On each day of the
voyage one member of each watch helps
the cook and cook’s assistant in the Galley
– a busy and rewarding part of life on board
known as ‘Mess Duty’!

Schools & Youth
Voyages
Operating from our two tall ships, Lord Nelson and
Tenacious, a voyage with the JST offers education in a
unique outdoor setting, and helps to promote key skills
in leadership, teamwork, communication, self-esteem,
self-awareness and confidence.
A voyage with the JST is an excellent way to meet your
curriculum requirements for key stages 3 and 4. We have
a dedicated team of sailing specialists, who have the
skills and expertise to teach and educate pupils about
sail training. Whether they are helming the ship, learning
about navigation by the stars, or helping to prepare meals
in the galley, they will learn invaluable life-skills, and
will leave with a new sense of confidence and belief in
themselves.
Corporate Voyages
A JST voyage is an effective, innovative and socially
responsible vehicle for helping businesses to enrich
their culture, strengthen staff collaboration and improve
client engagement. Sailing one of our ships requires that
everyone get actively involved; there are no passengers
or by-standers. This participation, along with the intimate
setting, quickly breaks down barriers, substantiates
relationships and improves mutual understanding.
As our two ships are fully accessible, we can cater to the
needs of all physical abilities, including wheelchair users,
the visually impaired and hearing impaired.
Taking advantage of these benefits, businesses generally
use the JST to:
• Strengthen teams and leadership skills
• Improve employee or client engagement, interactions
and morale
• Provide unforgettable voyage experiences as a reward
for good performance
• Re-invest in their community by sponsoring local
(disabled or able-bodied) beneficiaries to sail alongside
their own staff or clients.
