Magic Fire, out August 19th on Yep Roc Records, shines with striking immediacy and
conviction. Over the course of two critically acclaimed albums - Best Medicine (Yep Roc,
2014) and The Stray Birds (2012) - the band has sharpened their poetic eye against our
turbulent landscape of humanity - and the resilient landscape of our human hearts.
Straddling north and south (Maya and Oliver reside in Nashville, TN and Charlie in the
band's hometown of Lancaster, PA), the band retreated to the Hudson Valley of upstate

They assembled inside a converted horse barn with Grammy-award-winning producer
Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm) and engineer Justin Guip. The acoustic trio
embraced the songs' calls for electric guitar, pedal steel, and keys. The band was also
joined in the studio- and now on the road - by Eau Claire, Wisconsin musician Shane
Leonard (drums/percussion/vocals) and his undeniably inventive rhythmic undercurrent.

'Not The Weapon But The Hand' was the 2012 debut album from the cult hero
collaborative. It featured appearances from Danny Thompson on double bass, Chris
Maitland (ex Porcupine Tree) on drums and Dave Gregory (XTC) on guitar, bass and string
arrangement .
Steve Hogarth is best known as the frontman of Marillion, the progressive rock legends
that he joined in 1989, following spells in The Europeans and How We Live. In addition to
the 12 albums Marillion have released in this time he has also recorded and toured as a
solo artist, under the name 'h'.
In recent years Richard Barbieri has been a core member of Porcupine Tree playing
keyboards on all the band's albums since 1993 as well as releasing two solo albums,
'Things Buried' and 'Stranger Inside'. Prior to this, it was in the new-wave pioneers Japan
that he originally came to prominence, helping to create the ground-breaking synthesiser
sound that defined the band and influenced the likes of The Human League, Duran Duran,
Gary Numan, Talk Talk and a whole raft of artists to follow.

Classic 1971 Family album remastered from original tapes and now featuring a bonus
disc. This new 2 disc version being released through Madfish in a deluxe media book has
recordings remastered from the original master tapes with a bonus disc of the band's
highest UK charting single 1971's single 'In My Own Time' and B side 'Seasons'.
The 16 page booklet includes new sleeve notes by Family expert Pete Feenstra , with press
cuttings and memorabilia supplied by Dave Eames & Trevor Gardiner, including the
original ad promoting the album in the UK press.
Growing out of the R&B boom of the early 60s, Family's sound evolved into a unique mix
of progressive rock, blues, folk, jazz, psychedelia and high energy rock n roll built around
the distinctive vocals of frontman Roger Chapman, Charlie Whitney's innovative guitar
playing and Rob Townsend's thunderous drumming. During their seven year career Family
released eight albums, scoring 4 hit singles and seven chart albums.
Regarded by many fans and critics as the band's finest album, 'Fearless' was originally
released in 1971 and entered the UK chart at #14. The album also gave the band its first
US chart placing and features the classic tracks 'Between Blue & Me', 'Sat'D'Y Barfly',

The debut Kscope album from Jethro Tull frontman now at mid-price.
In 2012 Ian Anderson released 'Thick As A Brick 2', the follow-up to Jethro Tull's legendary
concept album. The album was a critical and commercial success, charting around the
world. In April he returned with 'Homo Erraticus'.
The original 'Thick As A Brick ' album, released in 1972, was based around the poem of
disgraced child prodigy Gerald Bostock. For 'Homo Erraticus' Anderson is reunited with
Bostock, using lyrics written by Gerald based on an old historical manuscript. The
manuscript examines key events from throughout British history before going on to offer a
number of prophecies for the future.
Suitably dramatised and exaggerated by Bostock as metaphors for modern life, he
presented Anderson with ideas for 15 songs, which have now been set to music. The result
is 'Homo Erraticus'.

Si has already been dubbed "the king of vintage" by The Express and enjoyed rave
endorsements from influential DJs like the late Terry Wogan and Chris Evans ("How
good is Si Cranstoun?"). Now, released in 2016 on Ruf Records, Old School ups the ante,
with Si setting the controls for the golden era and tipping his hat to formative influences
like Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke and Big Joe Turner. "When it comes to taste," he says,
"it's '40s, '50s, '60s all the way."
While Old School's stylings are unashamedly retro, this album's time is unmistakably
now, driven by the original songcraft and acclaimed vocals of a bandleader who's given
the vintage scene fresh impetus.
Old School defies you not to dance. You'll be pulled onto the floor by the plinking piano
and parping brass of the title track. You'll stay there for Vegas Baby, which bottles all
the sticky thrills of a night on the Sin City Strip, complete with Reet Petite-style rolled
syllables. Si nods: "That's me having melodic and lyrical fun with the blues."
Bottling his irrepressible showmanship and spitting out the best songs of his career, the
album promises to take Si Cranstoun from cult hero to kingpin, and spread the joy
across the planet. "I'd just love Old School to be heard by as many people as possible,"
says the bandleader. "And when we take this album out on the road, we'll all be out to
bring the house down..."

Big Eyes, the brainchild of Kait Eldridge, is a band that has spent its career successfully defying
classification. They're a punk band with pop sensibilities; they're a power pop group with a
hard rock edge. Big Eyes are different things to different people, and yet have always felt
ultimately content cemented "in-between" the scenes.
Stake My Claim, the band's third full length, was recorded throughout the fall and winter of 2015.
It opens with their heaviest song to date, the title track, which sets a tone of Kait at a crossroad:
"'Cause nothing stays the same / stake my claim." Her lyrics are centered around dissatisfaction
and a need for change. Throughout the entirety of Big Eyes' discography, there is an undercurrent
of sadness and frustration, but within Stake My Claim, Kait has found a sense of acceptance.

Video Age is a New Orleans-based duo, taking inspiration from late 70s and 80s new wave.
Multi-instrumentalists Ross Farbe and Ray Micarelli bring classic guitar-driven pop
together with synthetic sounds and a mechanical feel to create upbeat music with dark,
gritty undertones.
On their debut LP, Living Alone, timeless rock and roll forms were deconstructed and built back
up with synthesizers and drum machines, giving the record a sharp, grid-like tone. Much of the
album was conceptualized during the summer of 2015 while Farbe was living alone in a sparse
neighbourhood by the train tracks. It was a beautiful shell of a house with no insulation, missing
windowpanes, and rain always leaking in,” said the lead singer and guitarist. “Being alone for that
long you start to see yourself clearly. But I never felt completely alone because the walls were so
thin.

During the sessions that would become their final album 'Yahweh or the Highway' Arab On
Radar recorded updated versions of two tracks that had originally appeared on a split 7" EP
with The Locust a year earlier.
Locked away on a roll of analog tape since 2001, the band and SKiN GRAFT Records are making
these unheard recordings available in an edition of 550 7" vinyl singles. Produced by Weasel
Walter in 2001 at Sound Station Seven, each single comes with a hand fabricated aluminum
jacket, custom polished and treated by the bands own Mr. Clinical Depression and then screenprinted with new artwork by Mat Brinkman and Neil Burke. No two sleeves will be alike. The
single comes complete with a hand-numbered certificate of authenticity and a heavy, doublesided tri-fold sleeve featuring band photos and lyrics.

reissue campaign of the groundbreaking female rock group's classic Reprise catalogue.
And while there might be some argument as to whether or not we have saved the
best for last, there is no question that we have saved the biggest for last, as this
expanded edition clocks in with no less than eight bonus tracks!
Indeed, Mother's Pride is perhaps the most controversial entry in the Fanny catalogue,
as Todd Rundgren agreed to produce the album on the condition that he and he alone
oversee the album mix. The result was a record that cemented Fanny's popularity in the
U.K. but failed to make a dent in the charts here in the States. Like our previous Fanny
reissues, this release features track-by-track annotation from the band as well as rare
photos. Another seminal '70s rock record from everybody's favorite "forgotten" allfemale rock group, supplemented with rare demos and lost tracks!

George Watsky is a musician, rapper, author and poet from San Francisco. While still
in his teens in the mid-00's he began winning spoken word poetry competitions,
including Brave New Voices International Poetry Slam Champion. He subsequently
appeared on the final season of 'Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry' on HBO and
performed at hundreds of universities across the USA. He has also toured in the UK
and mainland Europe as Watsky with his band, most recently as part of 2013's Vans
Warped Tour.

Multi award winning contemporary folk duo Jackie Oates and Megan Henwood meld
together their love of storytelling, songwriting and melody with their voices and acoustic
instruments, resulting in a fresh sound that combines both reworked traditional folk
song with original and contemporary material.
Their individual musical backgrounds are quite different yet their voices blend effortlessly,
sensitively backed by viola, guitar, sometimes piano and the accomplished double bass
player Pete Thomas.
The three met at Nettlebed Folk Club in Oxfordshire, already admiring one another's work
- they began playing music together shortly after and both Jackie and Pete contributed
heavily on Megan's last album 'Head Heart Hand'. Since then they have been working
together on new material and experimenting with arranging traditional and contemporary
songs to fit their musical vision. Working with producers Pete Brown and Tom Excell they
have recorded a 5 track EP entitled 'Wings' which features their haunting adaption of
Brain Bedford's poignant song 'What's The Use Of Wings?'.
The three have a relaxed and engaging connection onstage - two very different singers
combine their voices sinuously, telling stories in song, gracefully blending their
instruments to produce a mellifluous and sometimes melancholic soundscape.
The girls will be out on tour with bass player Pete Thomas with selected dates through July
to September including a special launch gig at St Pancras Old Church on August 25. Other
dates still tbc. but include Oxford Folk Weekend and Whitby and Yarm Festivals.

The New Christy Minstrels' classic Ramblin' album has long been considered that
great group's creative high water work. Released in July of 1963, the album instantly
made the charts and stayed there for 77 weeks, earning founder Randy Sparks and his
group their first Gold Record…and bringing fame and a little "Green, Green" to one
Barry McGuire.
Now in an expanded edition loaded with rare material (including six unreleased tracks)
related to the album! You'll hear the creation of "Green, Green" – the group's biggest
hit – in unreleased versions that feature members Dolan Ellis, Jackie Miller, and Gayle
Caldwell (later "Jackie and Gayle" of Shindig fame), with Barry McGuire on only the
third verse. It's a great arrangement, very different from the hit single…and a MUST
HAVE for every Christy fan. Plus, you'll hear the German and Spanish versions of the hit

Júlia Kubinyi is a folk singer who won Hungary's title of 'Young Master of Folk Arts' in
2012 and the Junior Prima Award in 2013. Many know her as one of the finalists in
the 2012 Páva Folk Talent Contest broadcast on Hungarian TV. Since 2008 she has
been the Ensemble's singer.
Now her own singing work comes to the forefront with her first solo recording:
Magam Járom – On My Way.
Hungarian folk music and folk dance have been part of her everyday life since she was a
child. She grew up performing and has appeared on numerous recordings, at festivals in
Hungary and abroad, and in Hungarian folk song competitions.
She is a member of the generation that could study folk singing already in elementary
school within the framework of the music schools. She learned from her own mother
who taught singing at the music school in Salgótarján, Hungary.
She has been a student of those dedicated to Hungary's dance house movement – the
ones that started the movement and keep it alive today, and whose music and song
provide an example for young folk artists just spreading their wings.

The Northern Breeze is the debut solo album of Italian flute and whistle player Michel Balatti,
driving force of bands such as Birkin Tree and Liguriani. The core of the album repertoire is Irish

John Beasley has shared stages with some of the most important names in jazz during his threedecade career. From his days as a member of Freddie Hubbard's quintet and one of Miles Davis'
last touring bands to his role as Music Director for Jazz Day galas for the Thelonious Monk
Institute, Beasley has had a first-hand involvement with the genre's never-ending evolution.
Thelonious Monk is a Mount Rushmore figure in the creation of modern jazz. As the centennial of
his birth rapidly approaches, Beasley - pianist, conductor and arranger - has grappled with the
complex composer's legacy with his versatile big band riffing on the wit and unmistakable
architecture of the Monk songbook with irrepressible energy and swinging abandon.
MONK'estra, Volume 1 has its roots in a commission from Los Angeles's Luckman Jazz Orchestra.
When the gig was over, Beasley felt inspired to search deeper and continued to write more
arrangements long after the performance, eventually assembling some of the finest musicians in
Los Angeles to bring the charts to life in a musician's union rehearsal room.
Amassing enough arrangements and developing a signature feel, he took the band public at Los
Angeles's jazz incubator, the Blue Whale, to sold-out crowds. With a fifteen-piece ensemble,
which includes first-call horns like Bob Sheppard, Bijon Watson, Rashawn Ross, Beasley
conducted the band with an improviser's eye - free flowing and open to solos that add to the
narrative. Since that casual debut in 2013, the band has become a fixture on the scene,
performing at Disney Hall, Jazz Standard, Ford Amphitheatre, SFJAZZ twice and most recently at
the Playboy Jazz Festival held at the world famous Hollywood Bowl.

Scottish pianist/composer Euan Stevenson and saxophonist/composer Konrad Wiszniewski
continue their musical collaboration New Focus with a second album New Focus On Song for
Whirlwind Recordings. After the critical success of their first release which featured a unique
blend of classical, jazz and Scottish Folk that was shortlisted for the 2012 Scottish Album of the
Year Award, the pair have established themselves as leading lights on the burgeoning creative
music scene in Scotland.
Much of the acclaim received to date for New Focus has centred on the pair's ability to write
beautiful, haunting melodies where every piece in the sequel balances emotional power with
exquisite craftsmanship. Stevenson provides the majority of the compositions and orchestrations
and largely employs the subtle palette of the first album (jazz quartet, string quartet and harp),
further enriching these textures with the addition of woodwind. Wiszniewski solos on both tenor
and soprano saxophones throughout, while on ensemble passages he and his wife Nicola
Wiszniewski a provide orchestral colour on clarinet and flute respectively with Alina Bzhezhinska
once more featured on concert harp.
The resulting chamber music is rich and varied. Both composers pay tribute to their young
daughters with heartfelt musical letters dedicated to each; but sensitivity and sweetness is
balanced with hard edged improvising on the fast swinging 'Corea Change' and the angular and
spiky 'Fourths Ostinato', whilst the folky 'Green Park' and 'Sophia's Song' (with Wiszniewski on
Celtic whistle) leave the listener in no doubt as to the composers' heritage. That being said, the
Gallic influence of Debussy, Satie and Ravel is never far away - tracks like 'Ascension' and
'Braeside' are a unique blend of French impressionism and jazz, a testament to Stevenson's
versatility as a composer/performer who is able to move seamlessly between idioms. This holistic
approach is moreover exemplified in the two short improvised solo piano vignettes which appear
as sparkling contrasts to the full ensemble dynamic.
Alive to every textural nuance is drummer/percussionist Alyn Cosker, hooking up splendidly with
the ever supportive bassist Andrew Robb. Indeed, the Glasgow String Quartet, all members of
the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, are used to working in perfect synergy, and from start to
finish all the players on this genre-defying album appear to breathe joyfully as one, a powerful
demonstration of accessible, creative music making in the 21st century.

Soundway Records are to release the only LP by Nigeria's number-one producer of the
1970s and early '80s, 'Sound President' Odion Iruoje.
Available for the first time since the 80's, it’s limited to 1000 copies worldwide and is
pressed on 180g Vinyl. The album features a limited tip-on sleeve.
Originally produced on his own label Odion Ltd and released in 1983, this over-looked and
obscure LP was originally only ever distributed in small numbers back in the early 1980s.
Iruoje is credited as being the man who signed Fela Kuti to EMI Nigeria and produced all of
Fela's revolutionary early material from 1970-73.
His first job upon being taken on by EMI Nigeria in 1969 was to be sent to London on a
work experience placement at their London studios in St. Johns Wood. When he arrived he
was pitched straight in at the deep-end, finding The Beatles deep in the recording of their
Abbey Road album. He also signed and produced most of the great body of Nigerian
material on the EMI label including BLO, Mono-Mono, Tunji Oyelana (who adds vocals on
this LP), Ofege, Geraldo Pino, Sonny Okosuns and many many more.
Part disco, part Nigerian rap, Afro-funk & Juju it's a unique and at times eccentric blend of
Nigerian music that certainly deserves another look after all these years.

An unusual CD presenting the 1994 recordings of one of the greatest masters of
Afghan traditional music, Ustad Rahim Khushnawaz. He plays the rubab,
the national instrument of Afghanistan.
His wonderful renditions of folk pieces, classic songs, and two Afghan ragas were recorded by his
friend Veronica Doubleday, in the relaxed atmosphere of his home in Herat, western
Afghanistan. Of special interest is the beautiful singing of his two canaries, the remarkable
expressive interaction between a musician and his songbirds makes these recordings unique.
Some tracks feature solo rubab, but most include drum accompaniment by musicians visiting the
house. The CD has a fully informative 16-page booklet.

His virtuoso blues playing was an integral part of the sound of the original Fleetwood Mac,

with Liz galvanizing new song forms of tonal intimacy and profound technical expansion. Having
adopted a Rhodes electric piano as her instrument in this period, live outings found local
venues submerged in near-total environments of physical soundswell.
‘Six Improvisations’ captures all of the excitement of Liz’s live excursions, while offering what
might be more private expressions from an enclosed studio environment. Captured in but a few
evenings, we find Liz exploring heights of spiritual wander, spectral ecstasy, tension and release,

In 1971, Atlantic Records released a pair of Dusty Springfield singles produced by the legendary
songwriter/producer Jeff Barry (one-time songwriting and romantic partner of Ellie Greenwich, and
author of too many hits to name): "Haunted"/"Nothing Is Forever" and "I Believe In You"/"Someone
Who Cares." A restless Dusty, freshly relocating to America from her native England, then departed the
label and left an additional 9 songs recorded with Barry in the can, where they stayed until Rhino issued
one track, "Faithful" (in mono), as a bonus track on the 1990s CD release of Dusty's 1970 Atlantic album
A Brand New Me. The other tracks didn't surface until a subsequent deluxe reissue of Dusty's landmark
1969 album Dusty in Memphis included them as bonus cuts.
Now, reissue producer Jim Pierson—who tracked down the missing masters after being lost for over
two decades —has assembled Dusty's Barry-produced masters and put them together in a single
package for the first time to create the third Dusty Springfield Atlantic Records album as planned in
1971. Real Gone Music's release of Faithful on LP presents these historic Barry-Springfield
collaborations exactly as they were originally intended to be heard, with the 12 tracks meant for the
album release finally out on vinyl 45 years later.

The Vienna State Opera resumed its performing schedule very soon after the end of the
fighting over the Austrian capital in 1945. As the ‘House on the Ring’ had been destroyed
by direct hits the company had to move to the Theater an der Wien, though it had been
closed since 1938 and was therefore dilapidated.
This house, with its wealth of tradition, nevertheless proved to be an ideal setting for
performances by the State Opera once it reopened on 6 October 1945. It took only a few
years to return to an international standard of opera performance; indeed, music lovers
and opera buffs believed that some of its productions even went beyond that level.
A decade or so later, studio recordings commenced in earnest. When the Opera House on
Vienna’s Ringstrasse opened after rebuilding in May 1955, it boasted an ensemble of
supreme vocal artists. The incomparable George London, who for some years had been
cast as an ideal Don Giovanni, was now joined by a Don Ottavio sung by the Canadian
Léopold Simoneau, who was then celebrated as a Mozart singer, particularly in Paris and
at the festivals in Glyndebourne and Aix-en-Provence. The attractive Italian singer
Graziella Sciutti, from Turin, was an appropriate choice for the role of Zerlina.
After some years in exile in Israel, Hilde Zadek made her début at the State Opera in 1947
and was a distinguished performer of numerous prima donna roles. Her well thought-out
interpretation of Donna Anna was a yardstick for generations of singers to come. Ludwig
Weber had joined the State Opera in 1945, becoming one of the company’s finest singers;
he is heard here in the role of the Commendatore. The already stellar cast was joined by
the Viennese Croatian soprano Sena Jurinac in the role of Donna Elvira and by the young
singers Walter Berry as the Don’s long-suffering manservant Leporello and Eberhard
Waechter as Masetto.
All through these years Rudolf Moralt, with his ideal knowledge of the repertoire, was
present as the staff conductor. He ensured faultlessly secure musical direction of
performances, both at the Theater an der Wien and – until his untimely death in 1958 – at
the House on the Ring. Moralt held the reins as securely in Mozart as he did in Hans
Pfitzner, Richard Strauss and even Johann Strauss, whose works he performed with verve
and gusto with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

Choreographer George Balanchine gave many gifts to the American people – and to the New
York City Ballet – but the most typically American and sparkling of these gifts was the ballet
Stars and Stripes, which was premiered in 1958, and has been revived many times since.
Sousa’s music was adapted and assembled into a 30-minute score by Hershy Kay (1919–81),
who enjoyed several earlier collaborations with the New York City Ballet.
Sousa loved baseball, and he even wrote a march, The National Game, to honour it. Baseball
remains the national sport in the United States, but many Americans will agree that football has
supplanted it, in terms of popularity and revenue. Chicago’s National Football League team, the
Chicago Bears, was recognized by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, with Sir Georg
Solti conducting, in January 1986, when they performed the Bears’ fight song, Bear Down,
Chicago Bears, as a surprise concert encore.
The song was recorded shortly thereafter, along with The Stars and Stripes Forever and the
American national anthem, and released as a 7” 45rpm single – surely the most unusual recording
Solti and the Chicagoans ever made. All these recordings receive their first international release
on CD.

This collection of overtures – many of them appearing internationally on Decca CD for the first
time – comes from the very start of Georg Solti’s recording career. That for Beethoven’s Egmont
was, in fact, his first recording as conductor, issued as a 78rpm record. The two Rossini
overtures were issued as a 45rpm and the Verdi was included on a collection of other overtures
and orchestral music from opera.
Solti re-recorded several of the overtures in this collection in stereo with the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic. But for sheer explosive energy, these rare mono
recordings from the late-1940s and the first half of the 1950s remain as persuasive as ever and
are collectors’ items.

Erich Kleiber was one of Georg Solti’s idols and it was a Kleiber performance of Beethoven’s
Fifth Symphony that was, by his own admission, the catalyst in his decision to become a
conductor – a decision he made at the age of fourteen. The Schubert recording comes from one
of only two recording sessions with the Israel Philharmonic – in May 1958. It is genial, but not
without the Solti trademark of excitement.
Solti recorded two complete Beethoven symphony cycles, both with the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra, in both analogue (1974) and digital (1986–90) formats. With the Vienna Philharmonic
in 1958–9 he recorded the Third, Fifth and Seventh symphonies. (He also made a ‘live’ recording
of the Fifth with this orchestra in 1990.) Over several decades he worked extensively with the
Viennese players, and despite making several legendary recordings with them openly admitted
that it was seldom a harmonious relationship, especially in those early years: ‘They hated me. For
many years I used to say that my favourite street in Vienna was the road to the airport’.
This reissue continues Eloquence’s tribute to Sir Georg Solti with, in the main, reissues of his
earlier Decca recordings.

The Dutchman Arnold van Mill (1921–1996) never enjoyed the international fame of his
German contemporary Gottlob Frick or the younger Martti Talvela and Nicolai Ghiaurov. Yet at
the height of his formidable powers in the 1950s and 60s, he had few rivals for rotund depth
and sonority of tone (with what Hope-Wallace called ‘double bass tug’) and versatility in a
repertoire that stretched from Mozart’s surly Harem overseer Osmin, via Verdi to Wagner.
In this, one of his all-too-rare recital discs, he displays that typical amplitude and generosity of
voice, and shows how seamlessly he can move from geniality and humour to baleful and blackvoiced.
Like Van Mill, Edelmann sealed his international reputation at the 1951 Bayreuth Festival, where
his Hans Sachs was admired for its robustness and authority, flecked with mischievous humour.
Edelmann’s resonant, cleanly focused bass (without woolliness or ‘spread’) lay a tone or so higher
than Van Mill’s. His extremely rare 1951 recital disc for Decca here forms a coupling to Van Mill’s
recital for Philips.

Certain rhythms seem to flow naturally for certain people. Shakespeare could probably have
held a conversation in iambic pentameters and, when it comes to music, you can find many
national preferences: the tango for Argentinians, the samba for Brazilians, the polka for Czechs,
the mazurka for Poles, the czárdás for Hungarians, and so on.
The Austrians have developed a predilection for the waltz, which grew out of an earlier dance, the
Ländler. It comes so naturally to them that it is almost like a second language. The great Viennese
soprano Hilde Gueden had it in her bones and was second to none in interpreting her native
operettas. But, in an inspired move by the Decca recording team, in 1955 she was persuaded to
try her hand at the waltz music of two British men of the theatre, Ivor Novello and Noël Coward.
The resulting album, beautifully arranged and conducted by Stanley Black, has become a classic.
This 2CD set presents Gueden in folkloric vein, from the songs from musicals by Coward and
Novello, to a sequence of Viennese songs, including waltzes, and two programs delivered with
often touching simplicity, one of children’s songs, the other of Christmas music. All are treated
with the same polished perfectionism, a total eschewal of sentimentality, and that indefinable
quality through which great singers make intimate contact with their listeners. The recordings
were made between 1952 and 1969 for Decca, with whom she enjoyed a long collaboration.

‘Zubin Mehta: The Decca Years’ has celebrated Mehta’s wide-ranging Decca recordings.
Re-released by popular demand is Mehta’s recording of Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony, the

After Música Callada Steffen Schleiermacher is now presenting Fêtes lointaines, his second
release featuring one-of-a-kind piano compositions by Federico Mompou. Along with the title
cycle, this CD includes other miniatures from the period between 1914 and 1921.
The titles of the short cycles very much refer to the real world. “Suburbis” depicts street scenes in
Barcelona, a guitarist endeavors to get a waltz going, gypsies form the topic of conversation,
suddenly an old gray mare appears, and then a beggar concludes the series with hurdy-gurdy
distress signals. The festivities in Fêtes lointaines, hints, mere impressions, are heard in the
distance – which is why the instructions at the end read: “To be played like an echo.”
Mompou resembles Erik Satie, whom he had the opportunity to meet in Paris and learned to
respect. The “Manfred Bürki” Steinway D grand piano presents its very transparent colour in
contact with Steffen Schleiermacher’s fine-touch fingertips.

Breathtaking virtuosity, sumptuous sound, expression brimming with suspense. On his debut
album the young Belarusian clarinettist Vladimir Soltan gives his all while enjoying superb

A double stroke of fate divided Josef Suk’s life into a “before and after.” Within little more than
a year he first lost his mentor and father-in-law Antonín Dvorák and then his young wife Otilie.
The Swiss pianist Karl-Andreas Kolly’s latest release illustrates this break pervading Suk’s entire
compositional oeuvre and offers a refreshing look at a composer who has not yet received his
proper due.
Suk’s piano cycle Moods op. 10 continues to be situated very much in the best Bohemian
tradition; Dvorák’s influence is quite audible. The rhythm and harmony of the five enchanting
character pieces evoke memories of folk music from the eastern Austro-Hungarian Empire, often
with its typical, slightly melancholy undertone, while it also becomes quite evident that the
extremely successful violinist Suk knew his way around the piano.
Karl-Andreas Kolly concludes his Suk recital with a “Love Song” capturing ecstatic longing with
suspended harmonies full of yearning and languishing. The MDG sound engineers again have
captured this gem in the best SACD technology, high resolution and in 3-D, for the perfect

The Dresden State Orchestra’s young solo clarinettist Robert Oberaigner and the ARD
prizewinner Michael Schöch have joined forces on this recording to present Reger's two
clarinet sonatas op. 49 along with his Sonata op. 107.
Right from the beginning Reger’s op. 49 No. 1 is absolutely enthralling: “Allegro affannato” is his
interpretive prescription here, and Oberaigner and Schöch’s rendering of a character situated
somewhere between “breathless,” “hurried,” and “pressured” has to be heard to be believed!
Reger’s third sonata, composed some eight years after the first two, produces its effect in a very
similar manner: classical in its design, this work wins over the listener with clarity and simplicity
reflecting the greatest mastery. The premiere, at which the dedicatee Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig
zu Hesse himself was in attendance, must have been an overwhelming success.
The two soloists form a chamber dream duo of a kind that is only rarely found. Tone colours and
expressive gestures are exchanged and further developed, so that the result is pure joy.
Competition occurs in the field of dynamic expression, and the quest for the unknown becomes a

Mari Kimura’s career is a measure of how violin virtuosity has changed over the last few
centuries, and particularly in the last fifty years. By the middle of the 20th century, violinists
and composers began to feel that the violin’s traditional technical arsenal required updating,
lest the instrument continue to sound like the 16th-century technology it is, trapped in a
quickly changing, increasingly high-tech modern world.
One approach, mirrored closely in the world of woodwind instruments, has been to find the
violin’s “extreme” technique, which would yield ways to twist the violin’s familiar timbre into
something new. One such technique was to exploit the violin’s harmonics—the glassy, highpitched tones produced by bowing a string on which a finger was placed lightly, rather than
pressed fully to the fingerboard. Kimura herself discovered a counterpart to traditional harmonics
in the early 1990s.
Expanding on a technique intended to bring an extra measure of presence to high notes that are
not naturally resonant, she began experimenting with notes on the G string, and found that she
was able to wrest sounds as much as an octave lower than violin’s lowest natural note, the G
string’s open G. She spent several years perfecting the technique, which she calls subharmonics.
For Harmonic Constellations, Kimura has collected half a dozen works for violin and electronics,
by a group of American composers each of whom has a distinctive compositional style, and who
take different approaches to the challenge of composing for the violin and electronics. Of
particular note is the premiere recording of the title track, a major new composition from
Michael Harrison, which is scored for violin with 13 pre-recorded tracks and computer generated
sine tones. The work is comprised of nine constellations of complex just intonation harmonies
that gradually shift and evolve over time.

Chris Brown (b. 1953) composes music for traditional instruments, acoustic instruments with
interactive electronics, improvisers, and computer networks. With Six Primes (2014), for

“Six Primes is composed using the first six prime numbers 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, and 13 to govern both its
tuning and temporal structure, including harmony, rhythmic subdivisions, and form. I wrote this
music to explore the limits of using the same integer ratios to simultaneously provide melodic,
harmonic, and rhythmic materials. The piano must be retuned in just intonation using the tuning
system factor of 2, three ratios with highest prime of 3, and two ratios each with highest primes
of 5, 7, 11, and 13. This creates a great diversity of interval relationships: whereas 12-tone equal
temperament has just twelve distinct intervals, this tuning has 75.
I employed this algorithmic control over form in part to evoke the egalitarianism of twelve-tone
music, and to divert from monocentric tendencies of modal musics. Within that form, however, I
allowed myself to compose freely, using a diversity of melodic, harmonic, and polyphonic ideas.
Lou Harrison’s endlessly branching melodies, Cowell’s polyrhythms and tone clusters, Cage’s
equanimity and Stockhausen’s deterministic force, the complex minimalism of Morton Feldman,
and the harmonious buzz of Ellen Fullman . . . all provided influence and inspiration. I discovered
that playing asymmetrical rhythms in odd numbered subdivisions of a strong pulse can evoke a
bebop-like swing. And although I never thought about it during the composing process, I think I
hear in its mixture of styles an influence of Ives.” - Chris Brown

Karajan's first complete recorded cycle of the Beethoven symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic. These
legendary interpretations were made in 1961/62 in Berlin's Church of Jesus Christ, at Dahlem, and were the
world's first orchestral production in stereo quality. It was one of the most ambitious and successful
projects in recording history.
Herbert von Karajan was a superstar, the most successful and influential conductor of the twentieth century,
who could work wonders with musical sounds. Fellow musicians/composers described him in such glowing
terms as "King of classical music" (Yehudi Menuhin); "one of the greatest geniuses of his time" (Rolf
Liebermann), and "le grand maître" (Leonard Bernstein).
The Beethoven symphonies held a central position in Karajan's repertoire. In the opinion of many, this, the
first of three complete recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic under his direction, remains unsurpassed.
Audiences were simply captivated by the expressiveness and wonderful sound of his interpretations, by the
perfection of the orchestra and their faultless musicality and sensibility.
