LEARN TO SING IN HARMONY
There are many women, maybe like you, who would love
to sing. Most never get around to it, don't have the
opportunity or are too self conscious to give it a go.
The simple fact is that just about everyone can sing.
Local group, One Acchord, a female acapella chorus,
are running a 6 week Learn to Sing Course starting in
October. They are keen to welcome any women
One Acchord
interested in joining them and best of all it is completely
With
you
free. The
course
will help you discover your voice
whether it is some time since you have sung or you are
a regular singer. There is no need to worry about
reading music, the simple teaching methods will help you
to learn a song quickly.
Tweeddale
To come
As well as learning to sing, you will also be taught two
songs in four part close harmony in a relaxed and
friendly environment. Just imagine the thrill of being able
to sing a song within a group at the end of the course.
Course will be running every Wednesday from 7.30pm. 9.30p.m. between 17th October and 21st November in
the Community Centre in Newtown St. Boswells.

forward to another great weekend.
Another grand event taking place is the

Just four pre-season friendlies were played and all played away from home with the Woodside Pitch being unfit
until the first Saturday in August. Even then it was difficult arranging friendlies because even 3G pitches around
Edinburgh were flooded due to the weather! So after two wins and two defeats in these friendlies Kelso United
finally started the season proper with a home game against Edinburgh University from the East of Scotland
Premier Division in a League Cup Qualifying match. Despite having most of the game and some great chances
including an early header by young trialist Calum McClure United let in an agonising last minute goal to lose 0-1.
A few days later Kelso United made the long trip down to Gretna - like
Edinburgh University a Division above Kelso - but United were outclassed
and came home with a 0-3 loss. A few days later they played at Leith
Athletic and just like the previous week played some wonderful football
but a goal from Des Burnett wasn’t enough to make up for two early
defensive lapses and United lost 1-2. Despite these three results United
had been playing some entertaining, attacking football and Peebles
Rovers came to Woodside Park to find the whole Kelso team on form. Chris Black, Des Burnett (2) and Liam Hill
th
scoring in a 4-1 victory. On Saturday 18 August United travelled to Coldstream and, despite creating numerous
chances throughout the game, lost 2-5.

Kelso Thistle
With over thirty players turning up to training sessions managers Chris Gordon and
Colin "Cozzy" Stevenson were able to give a lot of players a chance in their preseason friendlies. Some great team performances and a blend of youth and
experience culminated in a 4-2 win over Newtown, two divisions above Thistle in
the Border Amateur League. Finally the League season began with a home game
against Tweedmouth AC and a slow start saw Thistle 0-2 down in the first few
minutes, eventually losing 2-5.

This year, the Kelso Pipe Band reached a critical chapter in its thirty-three year history . Uniforms and equipment were
in dire need of replacement and this issue , together with the welcome influx of new members , beginners and learners
who then needed kitting-out , stretched funding to the limit . A major Re-equipment Exercise was nevertheless
undertaken to consolidate the successful development of the Pipe and Drum cores .None of this would have been
achievable without the generous and tremendous support of The Kelso Laddies Association , Charity Begins At Home ,
The Kelso Wheelers and the Kelso Community . To all of these, the Band remains indebted and profoundly grateful.

KELSO RUGBY CLUB - As I write these notes, the league seasons starts!
Kelso is in the National League which means the second highest league. Just to confuse the public, the names of the
leagues get changed .There is, quite logically, only 1 premier league. All the leagues are made up of 10 teams so that
we know our 18 league fixtures now. We also know the dates of our cup games and our 3 Booker Border League
fixtures as well. The only thing we do not know are the dates of any knock out games but that is all dependent on
progress in all the competitions in which we are playing.
The format of the Booker Border League will be the same as in previous years working on a pool system with the pool
winners playing off for the Booker Border League Championship. All the BL teams have agreed to get a pool game
played before the start on the official league season.
Our first home league game is against Hamilton on 1st September. Membership cards are ready for those who pay
their annual subscriptions. There are no changes on last season’s prices.
The Quins do not start their season until the middle of September this season but they have also organised warm up
games against Merchiston Castle School on 29th August followed by Melrose Wasps on the 7th September.
Information on all of the start of season events will be on the club website. There is also an opportunity to buy tickets
for all club members for the Scotland Test matches over the season, with some particularly good deals for the
November matches against New Zealand and South Africa. The Tonga match is being played in Aberdeen. Application
forms will be available at the start of the season.
We launched our new website well over a year ago and you may check up on what is going on by visiting
www.kelsorfc.co.uk . Our thanks go to Ian Anderson for setting this up for us.
The clubrooms have been busy with functions but it is never too late to book the premises. Both upstairs and
downstairs may be booked as well as the kitchen. Any members who wish to hold an event in the clubrooms should
arrange a booking through Douglas Bell, the Club Steward. I some cases, we may have to apply for an extension to
our license depending on how many members are at an event. We do let the clubrooms out for regular events like line
dancing, Zumba dancing, Bingo, University of the 3rd Age.
KELSO ORCHARD TENNIS CLUB - It is nearing the end of the competitive playing season with only the Borders
Winter League to come. There’s still plenty of fun, games & coaching on Thursdays which is ongoing throughout the
year.
The Richie Allan Shield Men's singles is on 1st September arrive 12.45 for 13.00hrs. This is coupled with the 'End of
Season Men's Bash' remember to bring eats and refreshments for sharing.
The Ladies 'End of Season Bash' is scheduled for 22nd September from 14.00hrs onwards.
In the morning of the 22nd there is a fundraising sponsored cycle being arranged by Jane Wright and there will be fun
day at the club for kids whose this will be from 11.00am till 14.00hrs.
The Ladies have a lot to celebrate this year:- Ladies I team won the Borders League Div 1 title for the first time in
decades and the Ladies 2 Team won Div 3. Coach Lesley Thomas with Johnny Short from Hawick won the East of
Scotland Mixed Doubles at North Berwick and Lesley played for the South of Scotland team at Eastbourne, Special
Olympian tennis star Lucy Porteous proudly carried the Olympic Torch in Wales.
In the Borders Junior Confined, Nik Stingl won both the U/14 and U/16s and boys singles titles and also the South of
Scotland 'Road to Wimbledon'. At the UK finals in Roehampton he was a creditable quarter-finalist in the Plate. Kelso
Club member James De Bolle & his partner won the Borders Junior Confined age group doubles beating the no1 and 2
seeds on the way. Younger brother Lucas was equal first in the singles but just lost out on count back. Angus Millar &
Archie Robertson were runners up in the under 16 doubles.
KELSO BOWLING CLUB - Visitors will be warmly welcome, Bowling is a social game suitable for all ages and
genders. Equipment and coaching are available for newcomers, so if you have advanced beyond football, rugby etc,
come along and give Bowls a try. The Club has Bar and Kitchen facilities, which ensures convivial after Match social
activities. We also continue to run our fortnight Bingo sessions on a Friday Evening. A warm welcome awaits all.
KELSO ANGLING - The second trip of the season was held at Carron Valley Fishery on Sunday 19th. For some reason
the attendance was less than for some seven years but those who went had a good days fishing, an excellent meal at
the Brewers Fayre Pirnhall Inn, near Stirling but most of all a cheerful atmosphere prevailed on the coach. Because in
our so called summer the Turnbull Trophy had to be postponed on many occasions it was agreed that trophy would be
fished for that day.The weather as ever varied from sun and flat calm to overcast and windy so a wide range of
conditions tested those fishing. Overall 28 rainbows and 10 brownies were caught, although for competition purposes
only the rainbows counted. At the end of the day the results were 1st Mick Tait 8 fish, 2nd Keith Dickson 5 fish and
3rd Graeme Hogg 3 fish.
For our salmon fishers with our strange summer the river has been up and down like a "fiddlers elbow" although a
small number of intrepid clubmen have been catching both salmon and sea trout during August. Sadly the majority of
members will all expect to turn up on the same day in October/November and catch fish "of right". Sadly fishing
doesn't quite work like that and their catch returns will reflect that as it did last year.
Unfortunately due to health problems Hon Sec Len Bolton will be standing down at the AGM after seven years in the
role. The club are actively looking for a replacement so if their is anyone out their with good communicative and
personal skills, reasonable office skills, reasonable computer skills and would like to get involved would they please go
into the Orvis shop and discuss prospects with Hon Chairman Ronnie Glass. There is a large membership and if you
are inclined a wonderful way of involving yourself in the community and the Kelso way of life. If you are interested Len
will also spend sufficient time with you so that the changeover would be "seamless. Tight lines!!!!

Borders Olympic

Kelso Golf Club
Have encountered the wettest summer since opening our 18 hole course the greenstaff and willing volunteers
have faced a monumental challenge maintaining the course. With so much water lying around, cutting the
fairways and rough has been hugely difficult. The slight improvement in the weather has been very much
welcomed and although there are still a few wet areas the course is looking much better. Well done to all who
have worked on the course for their efforts. I’m sure it’s much appreciated by the members.
With the course limited to nine holes for a few weeks, it has also proved challenging for the Match and
Handicap Committee with regard to scheduling competitions. Most of the backlog has been cleared now but
members should note that the fixture diary for the remainder of the season has been slightly altered to
accommodate the remaining postponed competitions. The revised fixtures are posted on the noticeboard
within the clubrooms.
Recent Gents competition winners include Ian Symons (Middlemas Trophy), Stuart Anderson (Maxwell Motors
Trophy), Kevin Wilson (Belhaven Shield), Kenny Roughead (McHutchison Trophy), Derek Scott (Wullie Douglas
Trophy), Ryan Hastie (A.A Hunter Trophy) Tony Pringle (Kelso Open – Ex Laddies Trophy), Allan Chalmers
(Kelso Open – Scratch Trophy) and Craig Logan (Hislop Dumma Putter).
In the BGA Summer League, Kelso will definitely have representation in the semi finals as the “A” and “B”
teams meet in the quarter finals. Good luck to the winning team for the rest of the tournament.
Recent trophy winners in the Ladies Section include Dawn Tomlinson (NPFA Shield) and Ann Wild (MacRobert
Thistle Cup).
A few weeks on from their appointments, our new Club Steward, Rona Fortune, and new Caterer, Joseph
Wright, have both settled Igneous
in to their Stone
respective roles. Rona is well known to members having been Katie’s
assistant at the Club for a With
number
of years and Joe will be known to many members having been “mine host”
you
at The Waggon in the recent past. All at the Club wish them both well and hopefully members will give them
plenty support in the coming months. Members may be interested to note that catering hours have been
extended on Saturdays and Sundays with a new and varied menu which offers excellent value. Full details are
posted throughout the clubrooms.
Membership is still available in all categories. Subscription rates are currently discounted by 50% and, with no
joining fee being charged, there’s no better time to join our club. Anyone interested in joining should contact
our Secretary, Donald Jack, on 01573 228821 (evenings).
You can keep up to date on all offers, events, news and much more on our website www.kelsogolfclub.co.uk.
Project Trust - Malaysia
I am a sixth year student at Kelso High School and I
have been given the opportunity to go to Malaysia for a
year working with the Scottish charity Project Trust.
After a four day selection course on the Hebridean Isle
of Coll, I am delighted to have been selected to teach
either English or Outdoors Activities for 12 months,
starting in the summer of 2013 after I have completed
my final year at Kelso High School.
In order to do this, I need to fundraise £5400. I have
many fundraising events planned and in action. I am a
keen photographer and have had some blank greetings
cards made with my own photographs which are
available for sale at Woodside Garden Centre & Café
near Jedburgh or you can buy them directly from me just email me with your order.
On the 24th September, I will be having my head
shaved in order to raise money for my year in Malaysia
and I am looking for sponsors for this. The head shave
will take place at Kelso High School, and Ashley from
the Kelso Hair Studio will be doing this. If you would like
to sponsor me, forms can be found at Woodside and
Kelso Hair Studio or you can send me a cheque - just
email me for details. I hope you feel able to help me,
and I will be keeping you updated via Kelso Life on the
progress of my fundraising.

If 'The Borders' competed in London 2012, we would have
won the same number of gold medals as Ireland, more overall
medals than Portugal and finished 49th in the total medal tally.
Our first medal came from Kelso’s Caroline Powell who
helped win bronze for New Zealand in the Team
Eventing.
Team Eventing consists of three components:
dressage, cross country and jumping.
Powell averaged a score of 52.20 after a series of rounds;
helpingChris
her teamCraft
into 4th place at the end of day one.

Next up was the cross
country, where horse and rider must
complete a set course in as fast a time as possible.
Powell and horse Lenamore increased their overall score to
53.8 after this event; meaning the team still sat in forth place.
The last chapter was the jumping final, when teams must
complete a course set up in Greenwich Park.
After this event Kelso resident Powell, alongside her New
Zealand teammates, finished third overall - bronze.
The Olympian soon took to Twitter: “Lenamore might be
home but I am lost in London... Taxi for Scotland!”
The next success came from 26 year old Peebles rider Scott
Brash, who succeeded in the Team Jumping
competition.
The organisation London 2012 said: "Team Jumping is a
tense, exciting test of skill, speed and power.”
In qualifying, Team GB with Scott
Brash finished 10th, improving their
efforts in the first and second rounds
when they finished 2nd and 4th
respectively.
It was the Team Jumping final which
truly gripped the nation.
Veteran rider Nick Skelton cleared the
course perfectly, Ben Maher
incurred four penalties, and Brash made
for a clean finish. Team GB were tied
Helen-Jean
for gold with
the Dutch. Ball

to a jump off. Skelton and teammate
Peter Charles cleared the shortened course
immaculately, just as the Dutch faltered. It was a gold medal
for Team GB.
John Lamont MSP said: "It was great to see some medal
success brought back to the Borders. The slogan from London
2012 was 'inspire a generation' and that is
exactly what I hope our athletes have managed to achieve."
Powell’s effort resulted in a bronze medal for Team NZ,
whilst Brash’s work contributed to Team GB's haul of 29 gold
medals. Hopefully 'Team Borders' success will
inspire youngsters to strive for glory in Olympics to come.

Teasing, what an old fashioned word seldom used these days but the action is still
often done.
Owners of new puppies will often tease their puppies without realising the
consequence of their actions. Imagine your puppies are born with a mind like an
empty CD, nothing written on it about life and the skills they need to cope with
everyday living. The CD already has inherent traits written on it like type ie: terrier,
gundog, collie, these traits are inherited and will not re-write. What you buy in a
breed may be controlled but never erased.
Before we even get our puppy home some of their CD will already be written on
which is why it is so important you choose your new puppy very carefully. Make
sure it comes from a surrounding that is calm kind and loving. From the minute we
pick up our puppy it will be learning about you and its new life style.
Teasing a pup with the hoover will often result in a fear aggression towards the
hoover each time you go to use it, the puppy will try to attack it. Funny when it is a
puppy not so much fun when the adult dog ends up out of control each time you
try to clean up.
Ninain a puppies face, again seems really funny when
A very common one is blowing
come
the puppy tries to snap backTo
at you
but when that snap back is followed on to a bite
in the face by an adult dog !!! Who is to blame ?
Pulling food away as you give a treat is unkind and unnecessary and will normally
result in your best friend learning to snatch which is painful for the ends of your
fingers and no enjoyment for them.
Please think about what you are doing to your little friend and try not to gain
pleasure from their distress you will both pay the price and once it is written on
their CD of life like the inherent traits a behaviourist may help you to control the
issue but rarely will it be cured.
Ok that is me of for another month; remember to keep checking for those yummy
ticks and fleas. Have fun.

Gardening Tales from Woodside
It's the season of misty mornings, smoky bonfires and apple pies, and that can only mean one
thing - it's time to start planting bulbs for flowering in the spring. Bulbs are really quite amazing
things, as contained in each is everything that is needed to put out roots, send up leaves and
shoots and to produce magnificent flowers. All we need to do is plant them in the right way and
in the right place.
Bulbs come in all different shapes and sizes, and some are really corms, tubers or rhizomes, but
we tend to group them all together under the general term of bulbs. Some bulbs are useful for
planting in containers and window-boxes - I recommend miniature daffodils (such as Tete-a
Tete), rockery Tulips (try Red Riding Hood) or any of the dwarf Iris reticulata. Other bulbs are
at home in rockeries and beds such as the taller daffodils, tulips, alliums and hyacinths. The
small flowers of Puschkinias, Scillas and Galanthus (Snowdrops) are happiest under the cover of
woodland or under shrubs, and Chionodoxa look very effective planted in a rose bed to brighten
it up in the Spring. Many daffodils (properly known as Narcissus) enjoy being planted in grass,
although you do need to take care that the grass does not get cut until the bulb foliage has died
down. Tulips tend to like a situation that bakes them over the summer, so do well on dry banks,
or warm borders next to a house.
After you've had a think about the situation you'll be planting them in, and what variety of
bulb to choose, the next thing to do is to make sure that you select a healthy bulb. Look for ones
that are firm and plump and have few blemishes on the skin. Avoid those that are soft, damp
and beginning to shrivel. After purchase you should either plant them straight away, or store
them in a cool dry place until you are ready to plant them. Sensitive bulbs such as lilies and
fritillarias should be covered with dry compost or shavings to protect them as they are stored.
Although bulbs like a variety of positions, most of them appreciate good drainage, so
incorporate some sand or grit when planting to improve conditions. As a general rule bulbs
should be covered by about twice their own depth in soil, and should be planted tip upwards.
Children are often teased that if they plant a bulb the wrong way up then it will grow upsidedown, but this is obviously untrue as the bulb will eventually right itself, although it will waste
time and energy in doing so. Bulbs also benefit from a feed of bonemeal at planting time. Once
you've covered up the bulb it's a good idea to mark them with something so that you can
remember where they are - after all its going to be a while before you see them start to shoot.
And that's really it! Come the spring the shoots will emerge, quickly followed by flowers to
herald the start of another growing season, which we all hope will be better than the last. Spring
bulbs are currently in stock at Woodside, and we will be offering advice during Woodside Bulb
Week 16th - 23rd September, with a children's bulb planting workshop on 16th September, and
an advice evening with supper on the 18th September. Please see our website, pick up a "What's
On" or phone for details.
