Start your summer with a visit to the Lincolnshire Show
The rather fantastic Lincolnshire Show takes
place this year on Wednesday 18th and Thursday
19th June.
What’s the first thing you think of when you
hear about the Lincolnshire Show? Tractors,
animals and farming – well think again. The
Show has evolved into a one stop event for
families, schools and couples looking for a fun,
educational and entertaining day celebrating all
that’s great about Lincolnshire. The Show’s roots
will always be in agriculture, but now shopping,
delicious food, attractions and rides all have a
place in the 200 acre Showground.
The Main Ring acts include the impressive
Broke FMX, a motocross bike athletics group
jumping 35 feet in the air pulling unbelievable
acrobatic stunts and the UK Mounted Games
will be back with a series of relay and obstacle
type races performed at high speed by very
athletic riders and their ponies.
A scene from last year’s Show - the 2014 Show promises to be the best yet.
Meanwhile the action continues in the Countryside Area with Jive
Pony, a group of
riders performing
gymnastics on
horseback and not
forgetting the
legendary Sheep
Show - a humorous
educational live stage
show about sheep
and wool.
The county’s community groups will bring the Discovery Zone alive
with entertainment from the North Kesteven Morris Dancers, a Lincoln
Inspired arts festival marquee, the Cheerstars Cheerleaders, North
Hykeham Taekwondo Club, Witham Hill Gymnastic Group and the
Lincoln Circus School.
Visitors can rest their legs and jump aboard the land train to visit the
cows, sheep, pigs, an array of new and traditional farm machinery and
fragrant flower marquee. Whilst shopaholics can browse the 600 trade
stands selling great fashion brands, furniture and Show essentials –
sunhats and wellies!

The Show is packed full of educational stands on food, farming and animals, not least in the
Schools Challenge Area. This year Dr D, of Science Days will be running a series of hands-on
experiments and demonstrations to explain how our bodies use the nutrients in our food,
while sharing some amazing facts about the human body!
The Grimsby Fish Merchant Association will be exploring the story of seafood processing in
Grimsby and showcasing how to cook healthy fish dishes in their very own demonstration
kitchen in the Discovery Zone.

I have spent the majority of my
life in London, with the last 14
years in Lincoln When you are
living in London it seems as if
everything that happens
elsewhere in the country is very
far away and almost feels
unimportant, rather like living in
a bubble. When there were calls
for support from ‘up north’ and
the government were accused of
not treating people outside
London fairly, I used to think it
was just people moaning for no
reason.
Now that flooding has hit
London and the home counties
the response has been relatively
swift. Compare that with the
flooding that occurred on the east
coast and the floods that hit Hull
last year. There was no promise
then that ‘Money is no object’
from David Cameron.
I now see, after living outside the
capital, that’s it’s absolutely true
that non-local (to London) events
get little or no consideration
compared to events which
happen close to London.
It’s a pretty disgusting state of
affairs common to all colours of
government. Let me know what
you think,

Local auction makes £200,000
A painting by the artist Samuel John Peploe (1871-1935) of figures
DRAPER MEMORIALS
A Personal, Professional Service
in front of a church has sold for £17,000 at auction in Lincoln.
• Located in Lincoln for
over 70 years
The oil on board was the highlight of the first specialist Fine Art
auction of the year at Golding Young & Mawer. The sale was part of
a two-part traditional catalogue sale at the Lincoln and Grantham
auction rooms which achieved over £200,000.
During the evening auction, which saw record viewings and buyer
registrations, an oil on board of a canyon landscape by Thomas Hart
Benton (1889-1975) outstripped its estimate of between £1,200 to
£1,600 to make a hammer price of £5,000, selling to an online
American collector. Meanwhile, the start of the watercolour section
saw a painting of Durlestone Head in Dorset, signed by the artist
A Samuel John Peploe sold for
£17000.
Henry George Hine (1811-1895) and dated 1881, selling for £700.
The painting was previously exhibited by the Royal Commission for the Chicago Exhibition
in 1893 and at the Brussels International Exhibition of 1897.
A watercolour of a ‘Moorland landscape with sheep’ by the artist Mary Weatherill (1834-1913),
signed and dated 1884, sold for £400.
Elsewhere in the auction, a painting titled
‘People by lake’ by Fred Yates sold for
£1,000, a painting by James Loder of Bath
of a horse titled ‘Bay hunter in stable’ made
its top estimate of £1,200 and ‘Waterfall in
river landscape’ by William Mellor (18511931) sold for £750.

‘Wordsworth Street, Lincoln’ by Albert
Goodwin (1845-1932) made a hammer
price of £500.
Within a section of 20th century art, a
cartoon drawing of the North Western Gas
Board by Rowland Emett (1906-1990)
made £650 and an ink drawing by Ronald
Searle (1920-2011) titled ‘Femme Fatale’
made £360.

The second part of the sale offered a treasure trove of antiques which had been discovered in
the shop of well-respected antiques dealer, the late-David Smith.
Mr Smith walked away from his shop on Manton’s St Marys Road when he retired in 2003,
leaving the antiques to gather dust until his death 10 years later.
The sale attracted large numbers of buyers to the auction rooms with over 2,000 bidders
registered at the sale online and over the telephones. A record breaking 50 per cent of lots sold
to online bidders.
The furniture section of the sale attracted particularly high prices with an early 20th century
oak chest making £1,300 against a pre-sale estimate of £400. A George II mahogany veneered
lowboy was keenly fought by two bidders, finally achieving £1,100 against an estimate of £200
to £400, and a George III mahogany bachelor’s chest of drawers also sold for £1,100.
The highlight of the clocks in the sale was a George IV mahogany bracket clock by Purvis of
North Audley Street, London, with a silvered dial which sold for £1,800.
One of the most interesting items was an 18th century journal, ‘A private miscellany by TerraFilius’, in 50 parts starting from Monday, July 18th 1743 and ending on June 30th 1744, which
sold for £480. The hand-written journal, signed by Thos. Cattenden in February 1812, was
inscribed with the following: ‘The contents of this book my father wrote for the entertainment
of his friends. As he was gone down to the grave before I saw the light of this world whatever
he has left for my perusal becomes the more interesting. I have therefore had the single sheets
bound together in this volume.’

The hotel, located on Brayford
Wharf North, has set itself the
ambitious task after getting
involved with the fundraising
efforts of the Lincolnshire
Bomber Command Memorial
Trust last year. Their target has
been set to reflect the 25,611
Bomber Command Aircrew
who lost their lives flying out
of Lincolnshire and adjacent
airfields, as detailed in the three
Rolls of Honour held in
Lincoln Cathedral. These
names will be engraved into
the 164ft Spire of Names on
the memorial site, which faces
Lincoln Cathedral.
The evening, held in the
hotel’s fifth floor Cathedral Ballroom, will feature a champagne reception, five-course taster
menu, an auction with money-can’t-buy lots and evening entertainment.
Nicky Barr, Director of the LBCM Trust, commented “I’m delighted that Doubletree by
Hilton Lincoln has chosen the charity as the beneficiary of their 2014 Electric Ball. To be the
first charity recipient is an enormous honour.
The project, which was launched in May 2013, has
already secured £1.8 million in donations and is
working hard to raise the additional £3.2 million
needed. Events such as this are vital not only to
raise funds but also to raise awareness. The
Memorial Park is expected to attract an average of
60,000 visitors each year helping bring in the
region of £2 million of funding into the local
economy.
We are extremely grateful to the team at
Doubletree by Hilton Lincoln for their on-going
support”
The target date for completion of the Memorial is
June 2015, to coincide with the 70th anniversary of
the end of the hostilities in World War II. The site
on Canwick Hill will incorporate the Spire of
Names, an Interpretation Centre where the whole
story of the Bomber Command will be displayed,
as well as a 35-seat learning centre and an
International Peace Garden. Set in landscaped gardens and with extensive interactive exhibition
areas, the Memorial will be a lasting tribute to Bomber Command both in Lincolnshire and
internationally.
Tickets are priced at £75 per person, or £700 for a table of
10, with all proceeds going to the Lincolnshire Bomber
Command Memorial Fund. For more information or to
book a place, please contact Rachael Hurst, Sales and
Marketing Manager at DoubleTree by Hilton Lincoln by

Lawrence explains, “I feel a huge amount of satisfaction in trying to
create the tension that fills the air just before a thunderstorm, or the
atmosphere of being the first one on the beach on a cold autumn
morning. Progressing over the years, it has been the mood and the
light that has become the central theme”.
Having been surrounded by art for as long as Lawrence can
remember, he grew up with oil paintings propped up to dry in
various places around the house which he took for granted. His
father, Gerald Coulson - one of the most important landscape and
aviation painters of the twentieth century, worked in a spare
bedroom and for a while, as a young child, he thought all dads did
the same.
Never really excelling in art at school Lawrence left at the age of 16
and started one of three positions in a retail business. By the age of
21 his father encouraged him to have a go at some oil painting,
giving him some pointers to technique, which colours to use and
the importance of tone values. After successfully selling his art locally
Lawrence was convinced that he wanted, and needed, to paint
professionally.

Let Citizens Advice help
Breaking Up Is Hard To Do so the song goes, but that’s an
understatement to say the least.
At a time of great emotional turmoil people have to deal
with extremely important issues such as splitting finances,
property and, most importantly, the future of their
children.
Breaking up a relationship was recently made more
difficult when the government withdrew legal aid in most
cases of family law, but help is available and Lincoln and
District Citizens Advice Bureau is a great place to start.
The natural inclination is often to get out of a bad
relationship as soon as possible, but you could find yourself
making or accepting arrangements for money, living
accommodation and bringing up children that you cannot
sustain, so you swap one set of problems for another.

Lincolnshire homes attract boat owners
New marina homes
near the historic city of
Lincoln are attracting
those in search of a
weekend retreat
connected into the
attractive waterways of
Lincolnshire.
Boat owners Dr David
Stott and his wife
David and Denise Stott are enjoying marina life at

The Quays, Burton Waters.
16 purchasers who have
already acquired one of the final 47 marina homes to be built at The
Quays, Burton Waters, in rural Lincolnshire. Located on the ancient
FossdykeNavigationCanal, Burton Waters gives boat lovers the
opportunity to explore the county’s miles of waterways.
Having purchased their first boat, a sports motor cruiser, just over a
year ago and in search of a better ‘work life balance’, David and
Denise spent much of last summer enjoying boating from Burton
Waters and decided to purchase a property at ‘The Quays’ so that
they can enjoy more weekends and holidays away from their
Rotherham home.
“We’ve had a holiday home in Devon for a number of years, but
were keen to find somewhere closer, which we can use for weekends
too,” explains Dr Stott. “Friends encouraged me to buy a boat and
introduced me to this beautiful area, which has so much to offer.”
Now semi-retired, but still working a number of days a week as a
GP as well as retaining some hospital and teaching responsibilities,
David Stott says, “We had a lovely summer at Burton Waters taking
our boat out to explore the rivers Witham and Trent, winding our
way through to Boston. We’ve joined the boat club here so we often
go out in the company of other boats and enjoy club social events.”
Now just a 50 minute drive from Burton Waters, the Stotts can
easily get away for a few days and are looking forward to sharing
their Beal Homes-built, three bedroom waterfront home with
children, grandchildren and extended family.
Their newly-built, south facing retreat gets plenty of sun and
overlooks the marina. “We’ve been very pleased with the house and
the specification is excellent,” says Dr Stott. “Burton Waters is a
super little community, with good facilities including restaurants, a
pub and a small shop and, of course, it’s very close to Lincoln.
“When we finally fully retire we may well decide to live here.”
The Quays is the last £15m phase of residential development at
Burton Waters. Beal Homes opened a marketing suite there in
October and finished two view homes in January.
These final properties, many of which face the water, share the
distinctive Dutch-inspired architectural style established in earlier
phases of development at Burton Waters. However, purchasers are
invited to shape the internal layouts and interior finishes in
consultation with Beal’s designer, so that each property will be
individual to its buyer.
Homes at The Quays start from as little as £180,000, ranging
upwards depending on size. Purchasers at The Quays will enjoy all
that Burton Waters has to offer, including acres of water, meandering
footpaths, wildlife areas, a restaurant built out over the water, wine
bar, country pub and health club.

We always applaud companies who have lasted the test of
time. It takes something special to make a business work and
continue to thrive. One such business is Tyson Mowers in
Branston.
Tyson Mowers first started in 1982 and traded from their first
shop in the village of Nettleham north of Lincoln. In 2007
the business moved to the current shop and workshop in
Branston three miles from Lincoln. With a need for larger
premises, this was a logical move as owner Simon Tyson has
lived in the village since he was a boy. A website was added
which allows Tyson’s to offer a wider variety of product direct
to the customer than can be displayed in the showroom.
Tyson Mowers aim to supply quality garden machinery that
can only be purchased through the specialist dealer. They

We all look forward to the next season coming and what better way to
prepare for sunny days than to go shopping and brighten up your
wardrobe. The spring/summer catwalks have seen the return of some
popular styles as well as bold new collections offering us something a
little different.
Spring/summer 2014 will see the return of pretty pastels and candy
colours in soft springtime shades. Team up a pair of lilac trousers with a
crisp white shirt or tee for a fresh
look this spring. For a more
subtle approach try soft pinks
teamed with earthy hues, perfect
for lighting up any complexion.
For evening occasions inject a

blast of colour by pairing your
go-to black trousers with a citrus
shade on top.
For those who like something a
little different this season will see
the arrival of modern art inspired
styles using bold colours and
patterns. If you fancy coming
away from the comfort of black
try shades of blue with an
expressive pattern. Within this
style is a new micro-trend of soft
sculptured pieces. A move
towards large folds and curved
silhouettes will be accentuated
in wide trousers and
asymmetrical jackets.
Wide leg trousers were a huge
hit on the spring runways. It is
often thought that wide trousers
will only suit taller ladies but this
really is a style to suit any size or
shape. Try a pair of cropped
balloon legs with a higher waist
to elongate your frame. Wear
with a plain fitted top and cropped jacket to balance the look and finish off with a scarf for a pop of colour.
An absolute essential in spring/summer is a jacket ready to take on those April showers. This season sees a move towards
statement jacket shapes as, let’s face it, your jacket will probably be the item most seen throughout the spring! Soft
sculptured shapes with wide drape sleeves offer a perfect layer over cosy jumpers whilst keeping you looking stylish.
Neutral colours allow your jacket to take you through the seasons as the perfect finish to all of your outfits.

Mark Illingworth Owner of Cahoots
for Men discusses this year’s trends
Mark Illingworth from Cahoots for Men, in Lincoln, has been in
retail men’s fashion since 1996. He has a vast amount of
experience and is impressed with the latest introduction of style,
colour and trends.
Spring and summer collections are
arriving daily in all the shops and the
window display are showing a variety
of tones. This season’s tones falls into
four categories – warm, cool , neutral
and soft.
Warm tones showcased are reds,
orange and yellows. Cool tones are
lemon, aqua, lime and electric blue.
Honey, khaki and ivory are the neutral
tones and finally lavender, greys, pale
blues and carnation prinks the soft
tones.
This season truly is a dreamy palette of
watercolours with the emphasis on
the pastels and warm whites. The
choice is fantastic, together with the
various fabrics of lightweight linens,
linen and cotton mixes and
exceptionally soft cottons. All of this makes a very relaxed look
and feel, but with a sophisticated twist.
The blazer is officially back, finding a place amongst the
fashionable set. Every man should have a blazer in their
wardrobe it has to be one of the most versatile garments
taking you from work to evening, formal to casual; definitely
an investment.
The bomber jacket is expected to become the most
ubiquitous garment for the spring/summer 2014 inspired by
original designs conceived for pilots during World Wars I and II
or by recreating them to feature luxurious fabrics, more
tailored cuts, innovative fastening formats and colourful
prints.
Long shorts reaching the knee seemed to have been given
some much needed attention too. While the design of such
garments is undoubtedly inspired by the practical gear used in
sports such as football or basketball, there now is much more
choice including wide shapes made possible by side
buttoning or pleating.

Elegance at the Tower Hotel
Afternoon tea has become increasingly
popular recently, and Phillipa Creasey,
owner of the Tower Hotel explains why
their afternoon teas are so in demand:
“Afternoon tea should be elegant,
relaxed and delicious and to further
enhance our offering we have sourced
six of the very finest loose leaf teas”.
The tea is from St Martins Tea
Merchants of Leicester, a firm who are
passionate about the quality of their
teas and share Phillipa’s philosophy that you just can’t rush a good
cup of tea. Whether you prefer a traditional English Breakfast tea or a
more adventurous fruit infusion you will find something to enjoy
from the six available.
The afternoon teas at The Tower are freshly prepared to order
(bookings are essential). The scones, cakes and pastries are made the
same day and the delicious sandwiches are cut on your arrival. The
teas are served in the elegant dining room and crisp white linen, with
beautiful bone china tableware add to the overall ambience.
You can still enjoy the loose leaf tea even if you don’t have afternoon
tea, it is available by the cup at any time, so take some time out and
enjoy a relaxed cup of tea, served the way it should be!

Hannah pursues her passion for art
Having left the bright lights of London and a
busy career in marketing, local artist Hannah
van Bergen has returned to her home city of
Lincoln to fully pursue her passion for art.
You may have seen some of Hannah’s paintings
displayed in venues around the Bailgate area,
since moving back to Lincoln she has
undertaken commissions for local residents as
well as national and international clients.
Her latest work has been
particularly well received, a
range of bold,
contemporary cityscapes
on canvas inspired by her
time in London.
Hannah says: “I find city
lights and the hustle and
bustle of city life
particularly inspiring. If I
am painting a place that
evokes emotion, such as a
vibrant city, I want to
convey the character and
excitement more than the
physical reality of the
buildings themselves.
Ultimately, my aim is always to capture on canvas something
captivating that makes the viewer feel good.”
If you are interested in seeing Hannah’s work or having a piece of art
created especially for you, take a look at her website:

What are they and how do they work?
PETER HANSON, PARTNER AT WILKIN CHAPMAN LLP, EXPLAINS COMMUNITY LAND TRUSTS
With local communities increasingly searching
for ways to deliver the amenities they need;
Community Land Trusts (CLTs) is an option to
explore.
CLTs are ‘not for profit’ organisations which strive
to create property focussed initiatives which benefit the local community.
Their profits, called a ‘surplus’, are reinvested in the community – perhaps
through new initiatives – not divided between shareholders.
They are set up, and controlled by, local volunteers who share a vision of
delivering initiatives. The members of the CLT may be people who live
and work in the local community.
CLTs look to deliver affordable housing, associated amenities and facilities
which are personal to that community. Many communities are desperate
for the right type and number of affordable houses to be made available to
them. CLTs give the ability for their community to co-ordinate the
development and procurement of affordable housing.
Often, CLTs wish to promote other community facilities as part of their
initiative which can provide employment opportunities or other projects
which benefit the community as a whole. Some schemes have included
community pubs, farms and work spaces – it really depends on what the
community needs or would like to see, they are in control.
There are many different ways a CLT can secure funding; all are financed
in different ways depending upon the ambitions of the CLT and the needs
of the community. There is a government funding programme, which is
available in some circumstances, and often Local Authorities are keen to
assist where they can.
The CLTs are also instrumental in identifying and securing sites. Often
CLTs will work in partnership with the Local Authority to ensure a site
identified is where the project would be successful and the land can be
secured.
CLTs look for landowners to submit potential sites which may be right for
a CLT project. Although CLT sites do involve the provision of affordable
housing, this can deliver favourable land values for landowners, particularly
when affordable housing is in such short supply.
To set up a CLT you must establish a separate legal entity to apply for
certain types of funding. People interested in creating a CLT can find
information from the National CLT Network
(www.communitylandtrusts.org.uk). Lincolnshire has its own network,
Lincolnshire Community Land Trust (www.lclt.co.uk) which offers a
range of support services to those wishing to set up or know more about
CLTs.
Wilkin Chapman LLP is experienced in working with CLT ventures,
having already assisted projects to get off the ground in the region. We will
be happy to advise and support you and can put you in touch with
Lincolnshire Community Land Trust.

Youth Employment – we still need to take action
CLAIRE L PETCH BA (HONS) CPP, MANAGER, QUEST RECRUITMENT
There have been nearly a million young people not
in employment, training or education for the last
three years and this is therefore one of the biggest
challenges facing our society and economy. (Source:
ONS) If levels of youth unemployment remain
unchanged over the next decade the long term
effects on our youth will threaten a lost generation.
It is estimated that we need another 395,00 jobs for young people if we are
to get employment back to the same level as it was at the start of the
recession in 2008. (Source: TUC)
In 2010, the REC (Recruitment and Employment Confederation) took the
initiative and launched its Youth Employment Taskforce, chaired by Baroness
Prosser. The taskforce produced a series of practical recommendations on
how to engage the next generation of the labour market in the world of
work. One of these was the REC’s Youth Employment Charter. Sadly nearly
4 years later there is still a great need for this taskforce.
“Urgent action is needed from government, business and educators in order
to build robust bridges into the world of work and address the current
expectations gap.” This is the core message of a report published by the
REC’s Youth Employment Taskforce. Practical recommendations include
revamping careers services, stimulating demand for new staff, raising
awareness of the changing employment landscape and harnessing different
routes into work such internships and temporary assignments.
Quest Recruitment signed up to this Charter and intends to continue to
strengthen our skills and experience in youth employment. Through working
with the University, LAGAT (Quest’s parent company) and local colleges
Quest has been able to assist at least 15 young people in finding short term
employment, some of which has led to apprenticeships and permanent
placements over the last 12 months, thus enabling candidates to update and
develop their skills range and therefore their employability. The team at Quest
are living proof that employing young people can contribute to the success of
businesses having recruited an apprentice who 6 years on is now running our
permanents desk.
Quest has always actively promoted apprenticeships and has developed links
with schools and other key organisations in order to offer both Quest’s core
services and also LAGAT’s. Quest know where the jobs are, which sectors are
growing and which skills employers require, so we try and play an active part
in supporting young jobseekers into work.
We will shortly be launching a new service which aims to compliment our
core business model by offering a fixed rate recruitment package in order to
assist young people into employment and to encourage business to look at
recruiting young people into the workplace. This will work particularly well
for organisations that don’t necessarily require an apprentice but that would
like to bring a young person into their business with a limited amount of
relevant experience. Experience and research tells us that taking the
temporary to permanent route works well with businesses recruiting young
people.
Quest feels that we have a winning combination offering over 20 years of
recruiting experience coupled with the passion for reducing the levels of
youth employment.
If you are interested in talking to us about this service or indeed about our
temporary or permanent recruitment service then please call 01522 514727 or
email [email protected].

10 things you should ask yourself
before starting your own
business
JAMES PINCHBECK, MARKETING PARTNER, STREETS
CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS
Are solar panels a
better investment
than a private
pension?
JULIAN PATRICK, MANAGING
1. Are you able to conceptualise/describe your
business idea easily? The success of a business venture is
often as much about being able to communicate clearly and concisely what it is
rather than the idea itself.
2. What problem, need or aspiration does your business solve or satisfy? To
be successful your business idea needs to help solve a problem for someone, satisfy
a need or create an aspiration or desire. If it doesn’t, success may be hard to come
by.
3. Is there a market for your business idea? Most businesses fail because they
have failed to understand or really know their market. It is vital that you really
assess what your market looks like and what the real potential for your business is.
4. Will your business idea make you money? The ability to assess whether your
business relies heavily on knowing your true costs, including how much you need
to live off along with the profit you can make. Knowing your break-even point, the
point at which the profit you generate covers your costs is a vital part of this
process.
5. Does your business model or process stack up? All too often most people
starting a new business try to do everything themselves or over complicate the way
in which they operate. In essence the focus should be on what you do best and
need to do; keep everything simple and use others or processes to do the rest.
6. Does your business have or need scalability? If your business is a lifestyle one,
then perhaps the ability to scale it up is not important. If however, your businesses
or rather your financial returns are reliant on you being able to grow it then it is
important you know if or how it can be made larger or scaled up.
7. When should you seek professional advice from an accountant?
The
rule of thumb is that it is best to talk to an accountant whilst you are in the process
of preparing your business plan or business idea. Their past experience and
commercial acumen can play a key part in shaping your idea and ensuring success.
8. How will an accountant help me? An accountant will advise you on a host of
issues including the most appropriate trading entity for your business, VAT
registration, treatment of income tax, what expenses you can claim, funding your
business and the possibility of grant aid, other assistance and business support.
9. How do you ensure you are on track? As part of our work with start-ups and
early year’s businesses we will advise you on the need to set up simple and effective
financial reporting and monitoring process/systems to ensure your business is on
track. This can range from a simple spreadsheet through to monthly management
accounts depending on the complexities of the business and your specific needs.
Keeping on top of your cashflow and ensuring the business is profitable are
probably two of the most important aspects to monitor.
10. Do you have the entrepreneurial flair? Starting and running a business can be
tough to say the least, the ability to keep going, keep focused and to generate the
returns can be challenging for the best of us. Knowing you have the resolve to
carry on is vital and worth asking yourself as well as those near to you.

DIRECTOR, FREEWATT LIMITED
Picking your way through the minefield of investments,
pensions and financial planning is difficult even for those
with a natural sense of direction.
Now a Government minister has thrown his own grenade
into the field by suggesting solar panels are a better
investment than a private pension.
As equine experts will tell you it’s foolhardy indeed to look
a gift horse in the mouth – so as the head of a green energy
company it would be churlish not to greet his
pronouncement with some element of joy.
But as anyone who knows me will testify I simply cannot
welcome Greg Barker’s views without an honest analysis of
the pros and cons.
The fact is there are still lots of good reasons for people to
invest in a private pension. Employers contributions and tax
relief, to name just two, are strong reasons for any sensible
person to invest in a pension scheme.
But there is actually a lot of truth in what Greg Barkers says
when he told the Daily Telegraph that: “Anyone considering
retiring should seriously consider whether solar panels are
right for them, because in some circumstances, they will get
a higher return than from putting the money into an
annuity.”
The fact is returns on annuities have fallen in recent years,
and typical products deliver an income of around £6,000 for
every £100,000 of pension saving – a six per cent return.
Solar power, on the other hand, can typically give returns of
around ten per cent based on today’s power prices and let’s
face it they are only likely to increase.
Homes which have solar panels have a three-fold financial
return. They generate electricity savings, attract a 20-year
index linked grant from the Government called a Feed in
Tariff, and get cash for any unused power put back into the
National Grid.
The cost of a domestic install is now well within the reach
of most families at around £6,000, costing less than many
second hand cars.
And it’s not just the financial numbers that stack up. Solar
panels protect you against future hikes in power costs and
help improve the environment.
So while solar panels may not be the only route through the
financial minefield they are the closest thing many of us will
get to a simple, risk-free treasure map.
If you are interested in more details about solar panels please call the
office on 01427 787297 or visit www.freewatt.co.uk

Cash flow boost for businesses
The National Insurance Contributions Bill was brought in by the Government
towards the end of last year. The Bill sees the introduction of the Employment
Allowance which will be available to businesses, charities and amateur sports
clubs from 6 April 2014.
The Employment Allowance is being brought in to free up cash to help UK
businesses grow. Employer Class 1 National Insurance Contributions (NICs) can
be reduced by up to £2,000 per year, and in many cases will mean that businesses
do not have any NICs to pay at all.
The claim is as simple as reducing a business’s Class 1 NICs payment by an
amount of Employment Allowance equal to its Class 1 NICs due, up to £2,000
per year. For example, if an employer’s Class 1 NICs are £1,200 each month, in
April their Employment Allowance used will be £1,200 and in May £800.
Claims for the Allowance can be made using a business’s own payroll software or
HMRC’s Basic PAYE Tools. HMRC will automatically carry forward claims each
tax year following the initial claim.
For those businesses exempt from filing, or unable to file online, the claim can be
made at the beginning of the tax year using the Employment Payment Summary.
There are some businesses that are ineligible to claim the Employment Allowance
and only one business within a group of companies or one charity that is part of
a charities structure is able to do so.
Duncan & Toplis are advising businesses to take advantage of this cash flow
benefit at the earliest opportunity. Please do not hesitate to Tim Godson, a
Partner at Duncan & Toplis, on 01522 507000 for more information.
Bid to boost vibrant cafe culture
Summer’s coming and
Lincoln restaurants and
cafés are making a bid to
serve food and drink
out-of-doors later in the
evenings.
Owners and managers of
premises in the city’s
upper High Street have
applied to Lincolnshire
County Council to
extend their pavement
café licences so that they
can keep their tables and chairs outside until 9pm.
Businesses are keen to enhance the continental ambience and vibrancy of the
evening economy and they are asking customers to support them by signing a
petition backing their request.
Those behind the move include Pizza Express, Craft, Slug & Lettuce, Walkabout,
Churchills, Café Nero, Carluccio’s and The Appletree,
Currently, eateries and bars operating pavement-style cafes can only do so until
4pm, when they have to take in their tables and chairs to make way for delivery
vehicles visiting the area.
However, businesses have carried out a survey which has shown that most
deliveries actually take place before 10am.
Lincoln BIG Chief Executive Matt Corrigan said: “Traders also point out that this
area will work in the same way, if not better, than the Brayford Waterfront, where
both deliveries and pavement cafes are permitted to operate all day long.
“Businesses are hoping that they will get a “yes” from Lincolnshire County
Council in time for them to make the most of the Summer sunshine and a busy
period on the tourism and events front.”
Dance teacher makes all

Bex Beadle (28), of Ravendale Drive,
Lincoln, who runs Footstepz Dance,
was unemployed when she learned
about the Trust’s Explore Enterprise
programme, which helps young
people aged 18-30 achieve their
dream of being self-employed.
She attended
a four-day
workshop in
Lincoln run
by the Trust,
which taught
her about
marketing,
taxation,
selling,
pricing and cash flows, before
completing an in-depth business plan.
The Trust agreed to support her with
a £760 grant and £2,000 loan to help
with the business set-up costs.
Bex, who runs modern jive dance
classes for individuals and groups, said:
“The primary focus of the business is
to provide modern jive tuition to
adults and children through regular
weekly classes. Then once a month I
want to provide an opportunity for
adults to put their dancing learnt in to
practise by providing a social
opportunity for them to meet
together and hopefully make friends.
“Having the opportunity to explore
the idea of running my own business
with the Explore Enterprise course
was life changing.The course allowed
me to understand what I wanted from
a business and the team at the Prince’s
Trust provided me with an
opportunity to gain valuable skills to
make it so. The financial help and
guidance that the Prince’s Trust have
given me has allowed a distant dream
to become a huge reality.
“After just four months in business,
launching in September 2013
Footstepz Dance has gone from
strength to strength, with a regular
weekly dance class, a diary of public
events for 2014 that is already filling
up fast.

Making Your Ideas Grow
News
Why not have a special evening?
The County Assembly Rooms on Bailgate will be the venue, on
Friday 25th April, for a piano recital by the international virtuoso
pianist, Ashley Wass. Why not make that Friday evening something
rather special and, after enjoying the wonderful programme of piano
music, savour a meal or a drink at one of the many nearby
restaurants and pubs?
Ashley will
perform a piano
recital that takes
the audience on
a fantastic
journey
through time
Bach to the
Future.
Ashley Wass. Photo: Patrick Allen/www.operaomnia.co.uk
Through the
music of Bach, Beethoven, Busoni, Berg and Barber, Ashley’s
audience will travel from the 17th to the 20th century and will hear
that he quite simply turns ‘anything that he plays into pure gold’.
(Gramophone Magazine)
Ashley was born in Lincolnshire and, as a teenager, was awarded a
piano scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. In 1997, at the
age of 20, he won the World Piano Competition in London; the
only British pianist ever to have done so. This prestigious prize
signalled the beginning of Ashley’s career as an international,
virtuoso pianist.
At the age of 25 he performed for Her Majesty The Queen at
Buckingham Palace in her Golden Jubilee Gala Concert. His
concert schedule now takes him to the finest concert halls across the
world including the BBC Prom concerts at the Royal Albert Hall.
Ashley will be performing on either a Steinway or GrotrianSteinweg grand piano supplied by the Lincoln Piano Centre for this
recital.
The concert, in the County Assembly Rooms, 76 Bailgate,
starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £15 (or £14 for
Concessions) and are available from Lincoln Drill Hall Box
Office 01522 873894.
This Bach to the Future concert is presented in conjunction with
The Lincolnshire International Chamber Music Festival. The
festival presents a week of amazing virtuoso international musicians
taking to the stage at venues across the county from 12th – 17th
August 2014.Venues include The County Assembly Rooms,
Doddington Hall and Lincoln Drill Hall as well as the villages of
Minting and Folkingham and St James’ Church in Louth. Details
are available at www.licmf.org.uk.
The Festival’s theme this year will be War and Peace in
commemoration of the 100 year anniversary of the outbreak of the
1st World War and the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the 2nd
World War.
The Lincolnshire International Chamber Music Festival also
presents a monthly series of lunch-time concerts. Each concert takes
place at the Drill Hall on the first Tuesday of the month at 1.00pm.
Tickets are available from the Drill Hall Box Office, 01522
873894 at £6.00 in advance or £7.00 on the day. Details are
also available at www.licmf.org.uk. Lasting approximately one
hour and at this popular town-centre venue, these short concerts are
a highlight on the classical music calendar in Lincoln. They
demonstrate the outstanding concert-going experience that our city
is able to offer to both residents and visitors.
