BLOCK PARTY AT FAMILY CONNECTIONS
Children are born learners. Every day,
they learn new skills they will build upon
as they grow. Children need experiences
to be stimulating, fun, and interactive.
Adults can guide children’s early learning experiences and use blocks as the tools to support their development. Playing with blocks can provide experiences where children learn
math and science, new words and pre-reading skills, social skills, and physical skills.
Family Connections is hosting a Block Party on June 25th,
11-12:30 with lunch to follow. Parents and children of all ages
are encouraged to participate!
Block Party was developed by The Southern District Family Living Program and is provided by Grant Co. UW Extension

PlayN’Learn
PlayN’Learns are a weekly opportunity for
families to play, explore, grow and learn
together in an enriching age-appropriate
atmosphere. PlayN’Learns have monthly
themes around topics that young children love
to learn about: farms, transportation, oceans,
neighborhoods, etc…
Every month, a newsletter specific to the
PlayN’Learn (including activities, stories,
themes, and parent-friendly extensions of
things you can do at home) will be distributed
to those that attend and made available for
download on our website. Newborns through 5
year olds, along with their parent or
caretaker, are welcome to attend. Parental
and/or caretaker involvement is an intricate
component of PlayN’Learns!

MY GARDEN BY KEVIN HENKES
What is the Proprioceptive System?
SPRING BY GERDA MULLER
The Proprioceptive System involves the muscles,
tendons, and joints, and how they contribute to a
person’s body position in space. Basically – activities
that incorporate heavy work and/or deep pressure on
those muscles, tendons, and joints are great for kids
who need proprioceptive input. And all kids really.

while you “crawl” on your hands and feet like a big bear.

your chest and bend WAY down at the knees before jumping
as high as you can over and over across the room.
Snake Slither – Lay flat on the floor with your arms straight
and tight to your sides and your legs straight and tight
together. Rock your shoulders and hips back and forth to
slither across the floor.
Crab Walk – Laying on your back, push yourself up onto
your hands and feet while you “walk” across the room.
Frog Jump – Squat down with your knees bent and your
hands on the floor between your legs, then leap up over and
over across the floor.

the ‘WHY DO I NEED SUNSCREEN?’ experiment
This is a great experiment to do with kids to show the importance of wearing
sunscreen, even on a cloudy day!
1. Fold a piece of black construction paper in half.
2. Put a VERY SMALL dab of sunscreen on one side of the paper. If you put too much on the page it will
not work as well. (Experiment with different types of sunscreen like stick vs. spray. Or try different
brands)
3. Let your child smear the sunscreen over ONE side of the paper.
4. Put it in direct sunlight for most of the day. You may need to move it around during the day to keep it
in direct sunlight. Or leave it in one place the next day to see the differences!
5. At the end of the day you will be able to easily see that the sunscreen kept the paper dark while the
sun faded the side with no sunscreen.
Great experiment for all ages! Great discussion afterwards and opens to a perfect teachable moment on
how to apply sunscreen with help or independently.
