Dear YMCA Friends,
The Mt. Diablo Region YMCA is a values based association,
founded on Judeo-Christian principles, dedicated to enriching
the lives of all people through programs that strenghthen
spirit, mind and body.
We have reached the midpoint of our strategic
long range plan and are excited to report our
progress here in the Mt. Diablo Region YMCA’s
2004 Annual Report.

The Mt. Diablo Region YMCA will be the premier
membership and family service organization
in Contra Costa County.
Volunteers and staff continue to focus on our vision to become the premier
membership and family service organization in Contra Costa County. We are proud
to have made great strides towards this audacious vision and are pleased to share
with you the highlights from our January - December 2004 fiscal year.
• Approximately 15,000 households were served at the year’s end, compared to
11,000 reported in June 2002.
• Over $900,000 in contributed income was generated to ensure that no one be
turned away from participation due to the inability to pay.
• The Delta Family YMCA opened its new modular facility and five new school age
child care centers were opened.
• The YMCA became the proud owners of the partially completed Danville Center
for the Performing Arts.

With the help of our members, volunteers and community partners, we have made
significant strides towards our strategic plan goals. This report reflects the many
kids, families and communities that we have strengthened through the programs
and services that have been established through our strategic actions.
Over the next two years, we will continue to attain our strategic plan goals by
developing programs and services to meet the needs of our community. We will
continue our efforts in the capital campaign to ensure the completion of new
facilities that will provide opportunities to reach more individuals and families
throughout the Contra Costa County community.
We are glad that you are part of the YMCA family. We know that our partners and
volunteers, as well as our staff team, will continue to be strong contributors and
will assist the Mt. Diablo Region YMCA in reaching these goals so that we continue
to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.

IMPACT: 100 preschoolers and their families will have safe, affordable child
care, and more than 300 families will grow closer through family programs
and activities.

IMPACT: 1,000 new members and participants will have the opportunity to
lead helathier lives.
This new Gale Ranch preschool and activity center, located in San Ramon,
was made possible thanks to a generous partnership with Shapell Homes.
The facility is licensed for preschool youth and is a state-of-the-art facility
that includes computer and Internet capabilities, program centers, a full
kitchen and more. Program plans also include summer camp, adult fitness
programs and family activities.

The Delta Family YMCA relocated to its new location at 1250 O’Hara Avenue
in Oakley on the site of the future 24,000 sq. ft. full facility. The new modular
facilities consist of 8,000 sq. ft. and include cardio and strength training
equipment, an aerobic program studio, multi-purpose space and more.

The YMCA assumed ownership of the future Danville Center for the
Performing Arts. The 300 seat theater will be programmed for youth and
family theatre and other arts and humanities programs. Market research will
conclude in Fall 2005.
IMPACT: 16,000 community members will be exposed to additional youth
and family theater opportunities such as musical theater, plays, performances,
classes, lecture series, special events, and more.

◆ September 2003
The Clayton Community Gym, located on the campus of Diablo View Middle
School in Clayton, became the home for the Concord/Clayton YMCA
branch. Through partnership with the City of Clayton, the YMCA provides
programs and services to the greater Clayton and Concord communities.
IMPACT: Over 2,000 youth, teens and adults have enjoyed league and
recreational sports, family and community events.

◆ Contributed Income
The Annual Support Campaign secures the YMCA’s promise
that no person be turned away from participation in a lifechanging YMCA program due to the inability to pay. Each
year, YMCA volunteer campaigners engage individual and
corporate donors in a fundraising effort that generates
contributions designated for the scholarship fund.
The Community Gifts phase (gifts of $1,000 and under)
runs February-March each year.
Kids to Camp Campaign
“Kids to Camp” is a direct mail solicitation program
designed specifically for generating contributions for the
camper scholarship fund. Funds are distributed to those
with proven financial need as indicated by an application
process.
Donations
These are charitable gifts made by individuals or
corporations to the YMCA for general use and/or
donor designated purposes.

Programs offered include parenting classes, school
readiness for preschoolers, prenatal care for expectant
parents, English as a Second Language courses, Mommy &
Me, pee wee sports, monthly movie nights, a lending library
and more.
◆ The Pittsburg NEW
(Nutrition, Exercise and Wellness) Kids Program
Impact: 150 youth per each school year
Annual Support Campaign
The Major Gifts phase (gifts of $1,000 and above) runs
October-December each year.
First 5 Contra Costa, the YMCA and other
community agencies partner in the Centers to
provide programs and services to high risk
communities with need. In addition, the YMCA
is the lead and fiscal agent for the Brentwood
First 5 Center.
◆ Grants
These are funds primarily secured from foundations
through an application process. Grants must be used for
the purpose designated on the application and require a
final report once funds are applied.
◆ Investment Income
Income generated from gifts to the Endowment Fund.
The principal is restricted while the interest may be
utilized for general use or as designated by the donor.
◆ Federated Fundraising
These are individual contributions designated to the
YMCA through United Way workplace campaigns.
This innovate program was developed by Contra Costa
Health Services to focus on educating families and their
children about obesity prevention and treatment. This
program is a partnership between the Los Medanos
Community Healthcare District, Contra Costa Health
Services, the Pittsburg Unified School District, and the
YMCA to benefit children and families in East Contra
Costa County.
◆ Pulmonary Rehabilitation John Muir/Mt. Diablo Health System
Impact: 30 participants weekly
In 2001, John Muir/Mt. Diablo Health System and
the Mt. Diablo Region YMCA saw an opportunity to
partner together to provide Pulmonary Rehabilitation
programs to improve patient recovery. John Muir/
Mt. Diablo Health System provides the medical
expertise, and the YMCA provides the pulmonary
rehabilitation patients a supportive environment
with an exercise facility; giving them the
opportunity to continue their maintenance
exercise regime through warm up
exercises and the use of cardiovascular
equipment.
◆ School Age Child Care Expansion
Impact: An additional 92 school
age youth daily
(Total served: 1,400)
The Mt. Diablo Region YMCA is the
largest provider of school age child care
in the County and continues to grow!
Five new sites opened in 2004 to better
serve the Antioch community, where child care demands are
highest. New locations include Carmen Dragon, Lone Tree,
Grant, Kimball and Jack London Elementary Schools.
◆ Irvin Deutscher Family YMCA
Teen Room and Teen Council
Impact: 150 teens weekly
The Teen Room was designed as a safe place for teens to
meet after school to play games, complete homework, and
participate in service projects and more. Located next to
College Park High School, the YMCA Teen Room has drawn
teens to the YMCA where values and positive role models
abound. The Teen Council provides insight and advice to the
branch Board of Advisors on issues related to teens.
◆ Kinder Readiness
Impact: 24 preschool families per session
Preschool parents and their children learn to prepare for
school in this innovative program. Parents receive hands-on
instruction, while preschoolers participate in a three hour
program modeled on the kindergarten classroom, preparing
them for fall school enrollment. Most families have no
previous child care experience.
