New this fall is an adult coloring program on Monday mornings.
This is a free, one-hour, relaxing class for those who need less
stress in their lives! Back by popular demand is the Falls
Prevention Class with instructor Patty Osten, PT. This class is
funded by the State Formula Grant from the Executive Office of
Elder Affairs. The class will remain free-of-charge.
Also, with a grant from BayPath Elder Services, “My Life, My
Health” will be offered free-of-charge for a six-week session.
Signing up in advance is necessary. Please see Page 2 for the
course description.
During July the Senior Center building was closed. The parking
lot was expanded, and now there is plenty of parking. We are
especially thankful and appreciative to the Holliston community
for offering temporary program class space at their buildings:
Town Hall, Library, Fire Station, Mission Springs, Dragonfly
Quilt, and Christ the King Church.
Again, thank you to Senator Spilka and Representative Carolyn
Dykema for their support in obtaining a State grant for the
interior renovations of the Senior Center. Holliston contractor,
John Gagnon, completed the beautiful upgrades at the Center.
If you haven’t been to the Center to see all of the renovations,
please join us on September 19th at 9:30 am for an Open
House. – Jean Boulette, Director

The Chronic Disease Self-Management
Program is a workshop given two and a half
hours, once a week, for six weeks at the
Holliston Senior Center. Workshops are
facilitated by two trained leaders, one or both
of whom are non-health professionals with
chronic diseases themselves.
Subjects covered include: 1) techniques to
deal with problems, such as frustrations,
fatigue, pain and isolation; 2) appropriate
exercise for maintaining and improving
strength, flexibility, and endurance; 3)
appropriate use of medications; 4)
communicating effectively with family, friends,
and health professionals; 5) nutrition; 6)
decision making; and 7) how to evaluate new
treatments.
Each participant in the workshop receives a
copy of the companion book, Living a Healthy
Life with Chronic Conditions, 4th Edition, and
an audio relaxation tape.
It is the process in which the program is
taught that makes it effective. Classes are
highly participative, where mutual support and
success build the participants’ confidence in
their ability to manage their health and
maintain active and fulfilling lives.

My medication list has changed since last year.
I am not sure if all my medications are on the 2017 formulary.
The DRUG plan has increased costs, and I want to switch to another plan.
I need medical coverage beyond Middlesex County (Cape Cod / out-of-state).
My doctor is no longer a member of my MEDICARE ADVANTAGE plan.
I reached the “DONUT HOLE” and I am NOT a member of PRESCRIPTION ADVANTAGE (FREE income-based
Massachusetts plan that helps with drug costs).
I am confused by the above questions!!!!
If you have 1 or more TRUE answers, make an appointment with Sandy Dorfman, SHINE
Counselor. The receptionist makes ALL appointments. Please call (508) 429-0622. Some questions
can be addressed by emailing [email protected].

HOLLISTON SENIOR CENTER
September/October 2016
OUTREACH CORNER BY LINDA MARSHALL
It has been an eventful summer with construction going on both inside and outside of the building. But
now it is great to have more parking, a larger classroom to accommodate everyone, and a brighter
Center. All of this, just in time for our Fall Fair.
The Fall Fair is the major fundraiser of our Friends group, the Senior Support Foundation (SSF). They,
along with other volunteers, work hard all summer long, seeking donations and preparing for the Fair.
Without their support we would not be able to have many of the programs that are offered here at the
Center. Although we ask for donations towards most programs, that money often is not enough to cover
the full cost. The SSF covers the difference. They also provide support to other senior needs in the
community.
There is still time for you to help the SSF so they can continue to provide the same level of support to
our seniors. They need help both on Friday 9/9 to set up, as well as between 7:00am and 5:00pm on
the day of the Fair 9/10. If you can help even for a couple of hours, please let us know! I will be here all
day at the Fair, and I hope to see you here as well!

The Constitutional Convention of 1787 was, in the words of
Connecticut Governor Samuel Huntington, a “new event” in human
history. In the midst of this “new event,” nothing was newer than the
creation of the Office of the President and the Electoral College.
Unanimously elected the nation’s first president, Washington was
well aware of his unique position: “I walk,” he wrote, “on untrodden
ground.”
